Possibly a visual pun based on a famous quote by Karl Marx: "Religion is the opiate of the masses" (original German: "Religion ist Opium für das Volk") (heroin, of course, being an opiate). The link to socialism/communism's ideals of equality via Marx may also be significant if the following quote from Alvar Hanso is taken into account: "A society should not merely be measured by its brightest lights, but on how the brightest light the way for those who cannot shine for themselves."
