For the character from The Lost Experience, see: Dr. Vincent "Wally" Bolé

Vincent is Walt's dog, which is yellow Labrador retriever , and the only non-human survivor of Flight 815.

Before the crash

Vincent originally belonged to Brian Porter, Walt's adoptive father. Vincent was present when a bird slammed into the sliding glass door, killing itself on impact. After Walt's mother, Susan, died, Michael took Vincent from Brian without his permission. When Walt objected, stating that Vincent belonged to Brian, Michael told Walt that Brian gave him the dog. He did this both as an act to console his son and out of his contempt for Brian. ("Special")

While on Oceanic flight 815, Vincent was presumably in the luggage compartment of the aircraft.

On the Island

Season 1 (Days 1-44)

Vincent on beach. ("Walkabout")

Shortly after the crash, Vincent is searching the jungle when Christian Shephard appears and stops him. Christian tells Vincent that he needs to go wake up his son. Vincent then runs over to Jack, who has just regained consciousness. ("So It Begins")

Jack was the first survivor to see Vincent on the Island, as he was running through the jungle. Vincent is also seen in the bush. ("Pilot, Part 1")

Walt spent much of his early time on the island searching for Vincent, thus creating conflict with Michael, who wanted Walt to stay close by. When Michael mentioned Vincent to Jack, Jack revealed that the dog was fine. Eventually, Vincent returned to camp when Locke blew a high-pitch whistle he had carved. Locke offered to let Michael bring Vincent to Walt so that Michael could reconcile with his son. ("Tabula Rasa")

One night on the beach, all the castaways looked over as Vincent barked loudly at the wild boars. ("Walkabout")

After Michael tells Walt that he can not see Locke, Walt storms off into the jungle with Vincent. The dog suddenly barks madly, running away. Walt chases after him, dropping the dog’s leash in the process. ("Special")

Vincent was chased by Michael in the jungle yet another time, which caused Michael to find Sun burying her fake driver's license. When Michael tries to comfort her they nearly kiss, were it not for Vincent who shows up barking just at that moment. ("Buried Secrets")

When Walt left with Michael to seek rescue on the raft, he placed Vincent in the care of Shannon. Vincent initially tried to swim after the raft after it launched, but he shortly returned to the shore. In the following days, Vincent served as a source of comfort and distraction for Shannon, who had recently suffered the loss of her step-brother, Boone. ("Exodus, Part 1") ("Exodus, Part 2")

Season 2 (Days 44-65)

While the Losties hide in the Caves, Vincent disappears into the jungle as Shannon and Sayid look for him. Shannon runs off from Sayid then hears whispers and sees Walt, who disappears when Sayid comes towards her with Vincent. ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")

Sun is working in her garden when she is interrupted by Claire carrying Aaron, and Shannon with Vincent. Claire tells Sun nervously that they have found the message bottle from the raft ("Everybody Hates Hugo")

After Shannon sees Walt a second time, she attempts to use Vincent to track him by smelling Walt's shirt but he leads her to Boone's grave. He then leads Shannon into the jungle but runs off just before her death. Later, Vincent returns to the beach to see Michael has returned and is reunited with him. ("Abandoned") ("Collision")

When Michael disappeared into the jungle to look for Walt, Vincent befriended Ana Lucia after she joined the fuselage survivors. His friendship with Ana Lucia was short-lived, as Michael murdered Ana Lucia not long after his return. Vincent was also present before Charlie attacked Sun, though he did not bark or defend her. It is possible that if he was still in the area, he recognized Charlie and did not see any reason for alarm. Vincent befriended many of the island regulars and has ceased to have a single, identifiable "owner." He was seen with Sawyer, who was feeding him and petting him. ("The Long Con") ("S.O.S.")

While Charlie struggles to build the church, Vincent approaches with a Virgin Mary statue in his mouth, dropping it at Charlie's feet. Charlie takes the statue and follows Vincent to Sawyer's tent, where Charlie discovers the other Virgin Mary statues and takes them all. ("Three Minutes")

Season 3 (Days 68-91)

Vincent holding Roger Linus' mummified arm with keychain ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")

Vincent emerged from the jungle before Hurley and Charlie with a human arm bone in his mouth. The hand on the arm held a keychain with a single key and a rabbit's foot. He led Hurley back into the woods, and eventually to the DHARMA van from which the arm and key originated. Vincent remained with Hurley, Charlie, Jin, and Sawyer as they fixed the van, and later went on a joyride with them when Hurley was able to restart the engine. ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")

Vincent pulled the blanket off of Paulo and Nikki's paralyzed bodies when they were presumed dead by the other survivors and awaiting burial. It's highly likely that Vincent knew they were still alive, given a dog's heightened perceptions. ("Exposé")

Vincent3x14

Vincent drags the blanket off Nikki and Paulo ("Exposé")

Vincent is briefly seen on his leash with Hurley and Claire when they are leaving the beach for the radio tower. ("Greatest Hits")

Vincent was also seen leaving the camp and present at the radio tower. ("Through the Looking Glass, Part 1")

Season 4 (Days 91-100)

Vincent was present when the survivors split into their two separate factions and was taken by one of the survivors to join Locke's group. He, Locke, and the other Losties who sided with Locke walk off into the jungle, headed for the barracks.("The Beginning of the End")

4x02 Good dog!

Vincent with Charlotte's GPS("Confirmed Dead")

Locke's group does not want to be found. Charlotte Lewis, having been thrown down from the helicopter, is carrying a beacon so that she may be found by her helicopter companions, Miles Straume, Daniel Faraday and Frank Lapidus. To hide themselves, Locke's group attaches Charlotte's beacon to Vincent. Vincent, running towards Jack, Kate, Miles, Daniel Faraday, and the rest, prevents Locke's group from being detected. ("Confirmed Dead")

Vincent can be briefly seen in the care of Sun and Jin showing that he has been taken in by Jack's group. ("The Other Woman")

Vincent is seen with Bernard, barking at a body that has washed ashore. ("The Shape of Things to Come")

Vincent is briefly visible in two shots in the background after Daniel first returns to the beach on the Zodiac in "There's No Place Like Home, Parts 2 & 3" and can be seen on the left behind Juliet. This is his first appearance since "The Shape of Things to Come". As he was not on the Zodiac or freighter he must still be on the island.

Searching for Vincent

Searching for Vincent is often used by the show's writers as motivation for the Island residents to venture into the jungle. Examples are:

Trivia

  • Naveen Andrews (portrays Sayid Jarrah) has a theory that the series finale will feature the rescue boats coming to rescue Vincent while the graves of all the survivors are seen behind him.
  • Vincent is of Latin origin, and its meaning is "prevailing". From Vincentius. The name ultimately derives from the Latin verb "vincere", meaning "to conquer".
  • Scenes in the Season 2 DVD extras showed Vincent in the Pala Ferry boat with Walt and Michael. Although he was never seen to be with them at the end of "Live Together, Die Alone, Part 1", this led many to believe Vincent had left the Island with them. This was later disproved in "Tricia Tanaka Is Dead".
  • Vincent is actually played by two different dogs. The original dog is female and her name is Madison, while a second male dog named Pono [1] is now also being used to portray Vincent.
  • "Wally Bolé" is an anagram for "Yellow Lab".
  • Vincent is the second character introduced in "Pilot, Part 1", after Jack.
  • In French dub, the name Vincent is never mentioned, the dog is named Vince, but never Vincent.
