A Suggestion

Transcripts

  • Thanks for your offer on transcripts, but Spooky puts them up pretty consistently week to week, and we usually wait for hers for uniformity issues. You can see, hers are pretty standardized... no wikification (except writer info, etc), no scene division. This is what we're looking for, because there are 50 already, and we want them to look the same. --PandoraX 02:47, 11 February 2007 (PST)
    • No problem. I saw that the last one was done by you, and this one hadn't been put up yet after 4 days so I thought I'd help out. On the other hand, although I think it's awesome that Spooky has done all that work and gives us permission to use it, the way that we're handcuffed with regards to using the material is kind of against the spirit of being a wiki. There are some errors, and it would be nice to not have to ask permission to fix those errors, or to change the format of the page if we all decide it would be useful to add scene breaks or anchors. The way things are right now, the only advantage of hosting locked copies over just having a links page is the ability to search.--Jackdavinci 04:29, 11 February 2007 (PST)
      • Do we need to ask him to fix errors? This is wiki, page must be not protected, I think its not a problem. I fix some of them in Not in Portland transcript --Znch 07:56, 12 February 2007 (PST)
        • There's not really a clear policy. I guess you made an edit and survived the experice ;-) I see that Spooky has made some edits today. But when people were suggesting adding anchors, there was a lot of talk about needing Spooky's permission. --Jackdavinci 09:46, 13 February 2007 (PST)
  • Sorry I hadn't seen these transcript questions... here's my take on it. I think generally, we extend the courtesy to whoever wrote the transcripts in the beginning to have important input into suggested major changes such as format (like anchors), because they did put in the effort (substantial, as yo u can see), and their name goes on the product (which is necessary to prevent lostpedia liability for trying to "duplicate" ABC material... that way we can say it's "one fan's experience of Lost"). For typo correction and glaring errors, I know Spooky would encourage anyone to make changes on their own. Thanks for trying to help out either way, both of you.--PandoraX 11:26, 15 February 2007 (PST)

Page Moves

Please do not move pages manually by creating new pages with the old content and redirecting the old page. Instead use the rename template. A sysop can do the move for you and this will preserve the page history.    Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 10:19, 15 February 2007 (PST)

Reads not Read

Thanks for catching that! I was a little put off that someone would change that back that I forgot the "s." It was there in the original edit, I swear! Pharmakon 10:53, 15 February 2007 (PST)

LM Images

  • Hi, Jack. You may want to double check with a sysop that's been around longer than I, such Jabr, because i haven't seen specific policy on this. But my understanding is that sites such as LM are fairly open to use of their images outside the site, especially with the tag unremoved (I also work for lost.cubit.net, and we watermark images and then encourage their use elsewhere). --PandoraX 11:26, 15 February 2007 (PST)
The use of LM images is allowed. Basically, the images themselves are copyrighted by ABC, so its up to them how we use them. The fact that the screenshot was taken by someone on LM is kind of irrelevant in the scheme of things. -- Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  03:07, 20 February 2007 (PST)

Rules

  • They can find out rule they are breaking by themselves, since they are written on the same damn page they are posting on. Actually if I do change them then the editors will never learn how to do it correctly. If I just say "follow the rules" instead of "follow rule #2" they would just read rule two, but making it more general they are more inclined to read all of the rules to find out which rule they broke, which therefore gives them knowledge of the rules. PS: I have been here a lot longer than you, I know how this works.--CaptainInsano 07:51, 19 February 2007 (PST)
Actually it is a proven psychological fact, that if there multiple things someone needs to know that if you tell them a broad area to look they are, in fact, more likely to look at all of the area than just one spot. Teachers are great examples of this; when there is a test coming they will say study Chapter 4, instead of saying, "Study paragraph 17 of section 4 of chapter 4. Saying the broader area helps the students understand not only paragraph 17 of section 4 of chapter, but also the whole chapter.--CaptainInsano 10:35, 19 February 2007 (PST)

Re:Summary

That depends, you checking up on my edits lol? I thought in that instance it was self-explanatory cause its inconsistent with like 50 other episode articles. Also I don't think changing punctuation requires an explanation as its pretty easy to understand what I'm doing. I try to put summaries if its something I don't think people will get, or its a big edit - but like everyone sometimes we're in a hurry or forget to do a summary. If you've got an issue with a particular edit, then just ask instead of scratchin ya head --Nickb123 (Talk) 10:17, 2 March 2007 (PST)

Please see Lostpedia:Episode Manual of Style (proposed) --Nickb123 (Talk) 10:24, 2 March 2007 (PST)
I'd think its going a bit too far to make an irrelevant addition when our policy has actual logic behind it - similar to DVD and abcmedianet.com descriptions. The summary is supposed to be as short as possible --Nickb123 (Talk) 10:32, 2 March 2007 (PST)

Origin/Location

Actually, in the infoboxes the place variable is for the place of birth for the character, not the current location. It makes so much more sense then the current location. We will never for sure know a characters current location, as flashbacks only can go up to September 22, 2004. Also, locations change from flashbacks to flashbacks which makes it confusing. Also, we like to keep all templates relatively similar. And if the place variable was current location we'd have about 50 characters with graveyard or island as their current place. I've reverted the template back to way its supposed to be and clarified the description of the field at the bottom. if you have any questions feel free to ask. -Mr.Leaf 14:28, 21 April 2007 (PDT)

I see where you are coming from and I also read all the usage guidelines before I changed it. As you already stated they guidelines aren't very clear, they were made before my time here, so I can't say 100% sure what was originally meant for each infobox. The Oceanic Passenger, Island character and Other infoboxes definitely should have Place meaning the origin (location of birth, before coming to island). That is a given as they are all on the island. However with the flashback characters it gets confusing and a little opinion based I guess. I wasn't really sure either but I took a look at characters such as Susan Lloyd & Anthony Cooper for example. It seemed to me that the place of origin was used more and seemed in my opinion the more likely way. For a few reasons:

1) Origin is a fixed location, not a location that will move.

2) We don't always know which order FBs are in so if FB characters are in multiple FBS in different locations we won't know which is where they are now.

3) For consistency's sake it seems to me we should have 4/4 doing the same way and not have only 3/4 one way and 1/4 the other making it more confusing.

I'm not necessarily right, I want your input to, if I am wrong, it should be changed. Do you see where I am coming from? -Mr.Leaf 15:28, 21 April 2007 (PDT)

Image re-uploads

Hi, when uploading a new version of an image, please upload over the older version of the file instead of uploading to a different file name. This helps tremendously with reducing the amount of duplicate images, preserving the image and talk histories, and eliminating the need for sysops to hunt down and find the old version to delete (the external application which renders the thumbnails may take a day or so to update the new one correctly, but it is still preferable this way). Thanks. -- Graft   talk   contributions  18:17, 30 March 2008 (PDT)

I was referring to the Staff logo image; I think in the past, many station logos have been updated on the same file in terms of the stencil pattern or not, etc. But anyway, yeah, I deleted the other one. There was an issue a few weeks ago where images weren't generating properly (aside from the usual delay after re-uploading), but that has been fixed since User:Admin addressed a permissions problem. -- Graft   talk   contributions  14:27, 31 March 2008 (PDT)

edits affected by reset of the December 2004 timeline

Hi. A large number of controversial edits were reverted in the December 2004 timeline. Some edits including a couple of yours got caught up in the revert. You may want to look at re-adding them if they are still valid. None of your edits were controversial. It was just easier for me to go back to a known point. Dharmatel4 17:07, 31 March 2008 (PDT)

typo?

You said, "Therefore Merge only if the above requirements are met - only 1 out of 3 of which I've seen any serious attempt of so far". Did you mean merge if the requirements cannot be met? :) -- LOSTonthisdarnisland 19:42, 3 April 2008 (PDT)

the casualties problem

On User:LostCloverfield42's talk page you posted that you didn't know what really happend with the casualties and their pages.Well this is what happend :after a long long debate on the question "Should we delete Red haired Casualty or not?", though many users were against this, the SysOp Santa deleted the page and aftermath also deleted Blonde Casualty, Male Casualty, Long haired Casualty and Short haired Casualty. His deletation of these pages became the reason for the revolt in some users such as myself (Orhan94), LostCloverfield42 and few more and we wanted the pages to be remade or just brought back to Lostpedia, so we made a petition (which you could sign on my user page, if you want) for bringing the casualties back. Well that is what happend really. If you have any questions post them on my talk page or if you to sign our petition you could do that on my user page--Orhan94 09:06, 16 June 2008 (PDT)
