Oh so the jacuzzi myth is true! I agree it should be written by a non-SysOp, keeps it more objective (I did the same with the DJ Dan transcript, asked someone else to write a thank you message). Good that its well received. And, I also heard you guys have parking privileges and VIP restrooms..... --Nickb123 (Talk) 11:15, 13 August 2006 (PDT)

Seems to me that he's just making up synopses for the episodes. I dunno, he may have some kind of insider knowledge (unlikely...), but that shouldn't matter, without citation we don't include it, end of IMO. I think a ban is a bit harsh, should he keep re-offending however I'd support the idea --Nickb123 (Talk) 13:47, 13 August 2006 (PDT)
Ah, come on. He is asking for, literally. He purposely broke the rules. If he is a fly-up-our-ass when he is a new user think what he would be like when he is here for a while.--CaptainInsano
He isn't after it though, he's just so confident that his information is accurate, he's not afraid of being banned cause he's so sure he's correct. We should be asking what makes him think he's got it all figured out --Nickb123 (Talk) 13:59, 13 August 2006 (PDT)
That son of a bitch they call secretagentman makes him so confindent.--CaptainInsano

Kudos to the staff too!

  • Thanks, and can I just say, the staff here is awesome and supportive also for people who are devoted to the show. I've been having a lot of fun here lately! And know that not everyone edits lostpedia, but just about all hardcore fans use it and love it. Thanks staff for giving us a nice place to obsess. --PandoraX 18:48, 13 August 2006 (PDT)

PS: Small favor, could someone delete Hanso.jpg and Aaron.jpg pages please? I put them under Hanso1 and Aaron1 instead, so it wouldn't take up common names for more serious pages.

Status of scam sites

I understand your point that we should include & identify scam sites, but I don't think they deserve actual pages. How about each scam site gets a REDIRECT to Scams? It seems like a better use of our site instead of actually trying to transcribe & analyze the scams (as it might only encourage them). (And thanks for coming in and smacking down Jstohler...) --Jajasoon 20:45, 13 August 2006 (PDT)

And to follow-up, what is the proper protocol for dealing with someone like him who doesn't vandalize, but is hostile? He asked to be banned... --Jajasoon 20:48, 13 August 2006 (PDT)

How do we nominate *people* for deletion? *chuckle* I think if it walks like a troll and quacks like a troll... this guy is not going to have much to offer in the future and is probably just a vandal in training. --PandoraX 20:52, 13 August 2006 (PDT)

EDIT: Actually, strike that, he said he thinks my (real) MySpace picture is of "some model"... haha... maybe we should keep him around... ROFL. How flattering! --PandoraX 20:55, 13 August 2006 (PDT)

LOL! I banned him for a day to stop him from messing around in anger. If he wants to come back & play nice, fine with me. As for the scam site policy, I think this should be opened up to a broader policy discussion. I gotta go to bed now, but someone should draft a potential policy for how to list scams & put it up for debate... Thanks! --Jajasoon 20:58, 13 August 2006 (PDT)

I banned mostly just to give a cool-off period. While he's not (yet) destructive, insulting people randomly deserves a time out (I'm a parent of pre-schoolers!). And he asked for it... But I don't plan on abusing the awesome power of the SysOp - although you haven't shown me where the jacuzzi keys are yet! --Jajasoon 21:09, 13 August 2006 (PDT)

"Rating" for Lostpedia?

I was wondering if Lostpedia had any guidelines... I moderate another LOST forum and we generally go with a rating of around PG13, which I believe is the same as the LOST show. I know you guys seem to allow the F word and stuff. I'm no prude myself, I couldn't care less, but I don't want to offend people unnecessarily. The reason I ask is because I'd like to adapt this funny parody theory called Bald, Limp Guy from Lost-TV forums: http://www.losttv-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16427 It's basically a 'theory' that talks about Freudian slips and phallic symbols in the show (specifically that Locke is an impotent phallic symbol), and it's pretty funny. I think I could make it so that it's not overtly offensive (well, that's subjective), but just a lot of suggestiveness, double entendres, and off-color humor, but I don't want to cause anyone any grief. I've lost all touch with what's "tasteful" lately, LOL, so thought I'd ask staff first. Let me know! You can keep discussion here, I will check back. Other staff feel free to comment also.

--PandoraX 11:50, 14 August 2006 (PDT)

Thanks! The guidelines help. I was not thinking of cursing, just using that as an example. I'm going to go ahead and attempt this parody, and hopefully it won't go too far, feel free to edit if you feel it crosses the line. Unfortunately, "offensive" is subjective these days. Like I said, I'll try to keep the sexual references covert. --PandoraX 12:02, 14 August 2006 (PDT)

Thanks, I made Bald, Limp Guy (theory) and I think I navigated it alright. Aero made me a special Template:Warning just for that, and it looks great. Thought I'd let you know, because I wondered if you wanted to use it on the Mindfuck page. I don't have any problem with it and agree with your arguments that it is legit, but maybe it would a disclaimer for people who do want to argue. --PandoraX 00:15, 15 August 2006 (PDT)

  • Hey GEoH, about all that business with User:Hmm last night, all I did was ask him to stop vandalising pages, as you can see here. I eventually ignored the repetitive messages I was receiving from him, and he gave up. Sorry if my editing caused any more problems. --SilvaStorm
It was more just giving him attention Silva, its what they want for people to start bantering with them (see here for some tips on what to do). Also GEOH, the reason I'm writing on here is that I wanna discuss a new user we've got, he seems OK but its the name "LostPedian". This I think is a little problematic as you might already gather, and also finding the username in the search bar just brings up the locked page you made on the original dude. Should we ask this kind new user to perhaps consider a new name. I'm sure if a "Bob" turned up you'd be the first to request a new title. Its simply a thought, and just wanted you to be aware of this if you're not already. Regards, --Nickb123 (Talk) 03:31, 15 August 2006 (PDT)

DHARMA protection?

Just wondering what the policy is on unprotecting pages. I see that DHARMA has been protected for a couple of weeks - I made some edits tonight, but don't see a reason to keep it protected, as new info is coming out & people seem cooled off... Thoughts? --Jajasoon 17:39, 16 August 2006 (PDT)

MetaWiki Request

Would it be possible for General_usage_guide to be unprotected for a while so a non-SysOp could contribute a little. I know its a page for the mighty only, but I just wanna add in the subsection on talk pages about giving new users "welcome greetings". You probably think its a silly request but I think its important, and considering I've done two decent MetaWiki guides on SysOps and vandalism recently, I hope you'll just trust me on this one that I'll write it well lol. I've finished it now, under the title "drafting". You may wanna tweak it slightly, its a little verbose. Also, is it possible for you to add information from Lostpedia:Citing_sources into the general usage guide as well. I think you'll agree its more appropriate for them to be merged, as its a minor point that has been given its own help article. Thanks in advance --Nickb123 (Talk) 04:34, 18 August 2006 (PDT)

I'm Back

Hey, it's me, Novajoe23. I decided you have basically no way to prove that I'm telling the truth that it's not me who destroyed the wiki and that I am the real Novajoe23, so I'll just be a normal user from now on, and if Admin ever decides he needs new sysops maybe I'll be taken into consideration. Besides, it was be who gave Admin the idea to do the Article of the Week and I suggested letting the users suggest the articles to be nominated. -- <<Novajoe23>> 10:17, 19 August 2006 (PDT)

That's a great attitude, Novajoe23. Wikis aren't supposed to be about egos and getting promoted, its supposed to be about the ability to share information. I feel like a valuable part of this community without being able to do any of the site's administrational stuff. Clearly you've played the same role in the past and I'm glad that you're on the "team" for the future. XSG 12:42, 19 August 2006 (PDT)
I completely agree with what you say about the attitude, I wrote something very similar when doing the SysOp MetaWiki guide - becoming a SysOp should not really be seen as a way of getting respect on Lostpedia. This is earnt through the edits that you make and the rapport you build with your fellow editors, not your title. I think it sums up many users' views around here, and anyone thinking otherwise should re-evaluate --Nickb123 (Talk) 12:46, 19 August 2006 (PDT)

Spoofy stuff

Interesting idea to try and differentiate original lostpedia parodies from external, though to me, they're kind of still in the same category. :) Sometimes people may just find that they have an easier time letting lostpedia host it than another page (like lazy me). I wanted to go through and differentiate some of the parodies from the real non-canon, though, which usually don't have disclaimers and frequently fool people (and are often put up maliciously *to* fool people). It's going to be hard to differentiate between a spoof and a parody though, no? To me, the two terms are sometimes synonymous. Maybe if you want to do the template, make it "Lostpedia Spoof" or something like that. --PandoraX 18:16, 20 August 2006 (PDT)

ahahahahaaa i can never tell if you're taking the piss out of me or serious! the mark of a true discordian! either way, the lady in question is at gigs booked by my good buddies ivan and albert very often, so my chance to shine (and do some rite-of-shiva re-enaction) will come again soon. and you're correct, quantum physics was invented by the irish in the year 11BC. unfortunately they invented guinness and whiskey in 10BC so the information was lost to the ages. --kaini. 20:15, 20 August 2006 (PDT)
i wouldn't class myself as a discordian, although i can identify with a lot of stuff that discordians accept as important. in fact i'd hate to have my beliefs defined by a dogma. but that's the wonderful thing about discordianism, the dogma itself shuns definition like the plague. but reading illuminatus! was definitely a life-changing event for me all the same, and robert anton wilson is one of the most original and important thinkers of our generation imo. i think the most important lesson that wilson taught me was to question everything. also, the night i finished reading illuminatus! for the first time (maybe eight or nine years ago now), i broke up with my then (long-term) girlfriend because i was tempted by a mysterious red-haired, green-eyed lady who i have never met since. spooky, no? --kaini. 20:38, 20 August 2006 (PDT)

Not that it matters, but I am the documented creator of alt.illuminati, on April 16th, 1993. Hey, it's my biggest claim to fame yet, so don't make too much fun of me! I'm a thelemic discordian bordering on a hermetic kabbalist, myself. Yo GEOH, I've thought a lil extra something for the General_usage_guide. Under Citing Sources, could you put a double * indent after the first comment and put along the lines of:
Try not to use language such as "The producers have said..." or "The writers have hinted" - always aim to find a citation from a podcast or news interview.

New to Lostpedia

Hello there, I am relatively new to Lostpedia. I've been poking around for the last month or so and I really think you guys have made an outstanding site. I recommend Lostpedia to all my friends that are Lost fans. You seem to be one of the more active SysOps so I though you would be a good person to ask about how I can become more involved with the site. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.--scocub

  • Thanks for the information. I look forward to helping Lostpedia become the unrivaled Lost resource. Please let me know if you see any errors in format or ettitque due to my wikignorance.--scocub

On Parodies, again..

Hi, GEOH... Thanks for asking my opinion, but I'm uncomfortable with suddenly becoming a spokesperson for parodies in general, hehe... I can't defend them all, but think they should be taken case-by-case, as with many pages here. I already put my votes in those pages, which ones I personally could live without there. But in the end, I am still a believer that the "wiki way" is the last bastion of the true democratic ideal: rule by consensus. :) My personal general thoughts are already expressed in "Theories": mostly that any wiki community should be reflective of the fans. To exclude parodies or theories as a general category because they are too "subjective" would not be an accurate reflection of our community at large, because we are a group that loves to theorize, but at the same time, poke fun at ourselves. For example, I am not a fan of a lot of the random speculation, but if you took the "Theories" portion off the main canon pages, I think you'd have a riot on your hands... because that's a part of what makes us us. As long as things are clearly labeled as a theory or parody, and it is deemed "worthy" by people who vote, I don't see what the big deal is. I can see plk's point of view in a way, because it is a slippery slope... for example, I'm not looking forward to "American Idol (theory)", but I think he is making a bigger deal of it than it needs to be, and this is what delete nominations are for. Also, maybe we could just keep this category locked for a while while it is a "hot button" topic, since it was Article of the Week (you know how those articles always tend to garner more attention, both good and bad). At any rate, I'll cut my rambling short there ;) --PandoraX 04:27, 6 September 2006 (PDT)

Jumping in here with a (somewhat) extraneous comment: There is actually a distinct difference between democratic (i.e. majority) and consensus rule. In the first a majority can overrule or overrun a minority, even if that minority objects strongly. Consensus decision making is different in that a minority - even a minority of one - can hold up a decision. No changes are made until everyone either agrees to the change, or is willing to step aside and allow the change to be made. While consensus decision making may seem cumbersome (actually, it is both slow and usually excruciating), it does work. Both the Iroquois tribe of North America, and the members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) make their decisions in this way. --Doc 07:14, 6 September 2006 (PDT)
Um, I never used the word "majority" for a reason. :) Democracies come in all sorts, not all are by majority vote, there are consensus democracies also (some would consider the electoral college one, next to the popular vote).. but that's neither here nor there. :) Let's stay on topic. --PandoraX 12:20, 6 September 2006 (PDT)

Oh, sorry. I get distracted easily by some topics. My viewpoint on the parodies is that some are worthwhile, and others are a waste of bandwith etc.... I understand that some feel too much silliness will make Lostpedia look bad - I'm not sure I care about that though. I do care about following new links and discovering that my time has been wasted by something pointless and badly written. On the other hand, I also care about following a new link and spending 5 minutes doubled up on the floor with laughter. This means each parody page would need to be examined on a case-by-case basis, and occasionally re-examined to make sure the good stuff doesn't go stale. How's that? --Doc 12:11, 6 September 2006 (PDT)

Lost Experience Guide

Hey GEOH. I've been working on yet another pet project. This time its a Lost Experience guide. I know rachelblake.com did an official one but it was orientated to be "in-game" (supposedly written by Rachel Blake), so theres actually no guide that actually explains the basis of alternate reality etc etc. Thus I think the guide could be quite useful, and it certainly explains in-depth everything thats so far happened at a concise level. Check it out here. If you like it, my intent is to depersonalise the language a little then stick it as e.g. Lostpedia:LostExperience under the "help section" so people can have it explained to them if they're new to it. What you think? --Nickb123 (Talk) 14:15, 11 September 2006 (PDT)

Thanks I'll reword it later to make it more wikiesque for a main help article. I'll also be doing a Lost Experience fan theory, cause the info it reveals makes way for an epic theory that will end all theories in my view. It will tear the Lost world apart! --Nickb123 (Talk) 08:00, 12 September 2006 (PDT)
Finished! Feel free to try and rip it apart. And please add it to the now protected Theories template please (under realist). Its under Valenzetti island (theory). Cheers! --Nickb123 (Talk) 08:33, 12 September 2006 (PDT)

Fwd: Hows this look?

I'd like a vote on how this Template:Banned looks. If we should use it or not, if it would be practicle. Thanks for your time --Ironman 08:31, 12 October 2006 (PDT)

You think your so cool, like you know Lost and stuff. Though I think your mistaken. I am the master of Lost knowledge and espeonauge. My chracter would be perfect on Lost (and you know it would). All this was just a thought of mine. Sincerely --Jigsaw 12:33, 27 October 2006 (PDT) p.s. till we meet again

Hey, you...

Hey buddy, everything alright? Haven't seen you around lately, but you're probably just taking a well-deserved break. Either way, wanted to make sure you are aware of the discussion we are having in here: Lostpedia talk:Theory policy. I didn't want you to overlook this conversation, because if something gets implemented, it would change a lot of things around Lostpedia. So far, Admin and others have been pretty supportive, but just wanted to make sure all the active sysops were in the loop on the conversation, even if they disagree, and to put their 2 cents in. --PandoraX 04:49, 7 November 2006 (PST)

"for my favorite jerk in the whole world"

jc1033's USA comment

Sorry man that wasn't me. I share a computer with the people I live with, and I save my password on lostpedia.

I'm back.

Hey I haven't been on the site for a while, after the whole escapade with that guy (whose name is Nate) finding out my password and reaking havoc on the site. I actually could have gotten back to editing a few times, but every time I tried I realized that my IP was blocked. I'm now at my library where the IP is unblocked so I'll improve the site as much as I can for a little while here. I actually just got your message you left on my talk page (which, along with my user page is blocked so I can't even edit my own User page) last August. I didn't realize that you guys gave my account a second chance; I thought you had given up on me; thanks for that message. -- <<Novajoe23>>

Still a Sysop??

Man, I just joined Lostpedia and every descussion I go to you are a sysop. What happened? Did you do something bad or did you just want a break from being one? I am not trying to seem rude, I am just curious and any information would be helpful. Thanks in advance--Countdown 08:11, 27 June 2007 (PDT)

SysOps at other Lostpedias

Hi, man!

My name (well, my geek name, lol) is Calick, and I am a high-rank editor in the Spanish Lostpedia.

These last months the wiki has experienced a rebirth and a high increase of its numbers of articles thanks to me and other members who have taken the new control of our wiki. However, we have not complete control, because we are not SysOps (the original administrators probably were gone, leaving the page abandoned, or maybe they never existed...).

What I'm asking to you, is there any way to become and Admin based on the qualities a SysOp must have, no matter that I am from another Lostpedia? We have no idea how to become an Admin or a SysOp, and we need to take control of some activities, specially against some recent vandalism actions. I know I haven't done as much as you and sure here I wouldn't deserve the right of what I'm asking for, but the Spanish Lostpedia is smaller by the time, and I've done a huge work as an editor and controller.

Please, if you can help me and my partners, we'll be very grateful to you.

See you...in another life, brotha!
