Alternate vs. "Flash-sideways"

Isn't it a little premature to move all my alt-character pages when we haven't even decided which we're going to use? Anyways, the alt template won't redirect to the correct pages now. --Pyramidhead 21:12, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

One of the first things I did was adjust the alt template. We can have a lot of discussion on this, but if Darlton are any authority, they have pretty much spoken authoritatively on what the "official" name of this timeline is called.  Robert K S   tell me  21:14, February 3, 2010 (UTC)
Where you see the "official" name, I see a silly made-up term that a producer used as an analogy to the narrative devices that were used before. "Flashsideways" doesn't do anything except confuse: how do you move sideways in time? Anyway, it's not even accurate in that sense, since the flashes are to several years in the past as well as a different timeline. But this is a discussion for the LA X talk page. --Pyramidhead 21:32, February 3, 2010 (UTC)
You beat me asking this question by two minutes. How does "parallel" sound to you? That's my preferred term. Parallel Timeline is something I recognize. --Alilamba 21:37, February 3, 2010 (UTC)
On this subject, I recently found this page: [1] that legitimizes both "flash sideways" and "alternate timeline" in relation to the new storytelling device. How about we refer to the portrayal of this timeline as "flash sideways" (ie, in the infobox and episode synopsis) but actually use the term "alternate timeline" to describe the reality itself (ie, article titles, etc.)? I think this would be a good compromise on the subject; it would acknowledge both phrases, and would make the article titles much less grating to the eye. --Pyramidhead 00:23, February 4, 2010 (UTC)
That may be on the official ABC web site but it appears to just be a blog written by a marketing intern or something. It's not even grammatically correct. "...depict what happens if Oceanic 815 never crashed"? Can we get a little tense agreement?  Robert K S   tell me  01:16, February 4, 2010 (UTC)

Is there any chance we could call the pages (Sideways Timeline) instead of (Flash-Sideways Timeline)? I really hate the sound of that word. It's so...informal? Or...colloquial? Or something. We don't describe jumps in the narratives as 'flashes', or write sentences like "Flashforward five years and X is chillin' with Y"... Do you know what I mean? I know what TPTB have been calling it, but Sideways Timeline, or Parallel Timeline, actually sounds like a definable thing, whereas flash-sideways does not. --Alilamba 21:15, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

Right I just saw what you posted while I was writing mine, but I still like "Sideways timeline" or parallel timeline. --Alilamba 21:16, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

I don't want to be hard, but you forgot some pages to move in Flash-sideways timeline.--Station7 21:37, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

What did I forget?  Robert K S   tell me  22:01, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

You forgot the pages:Bernard (alternate timeline) to change.

And Sun, Hurley and Sayid to change.--Station7 22:04, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

Central location

You recently mentioned a "central location," in which to hold a discussion over the flash-sideways article. Where might this be? -- Sam McPherson  T  C  E  22:01, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

I don't have any considered ideas on that. Where did all the "break-up the 2-part episodes into separate articles" discussion take place last year?  Robert K S   tell me  22:04, February 3, 2010 (UTC)

Re: Michael and Walt

Oh, okay, I didn't see that interview. I'll add a note to the article about it. --Blueeagleislander 05:26, February 4, 2010 (UTC)

Michael & Walt

With all due respect, 1) Damon & Carlton have, over 5 seasons said many, many, many things that were not true or misleading. A major one that comes to mind is back when they said that there would be no time travel. So, what they said on Jimmy Kimmel cannot be trusted as fact. 2) If something hasn't been confirmed on the actual show (or an official ARG) then it's not canon and shouldn't stated as fact. 3) Just because we don't see Michael and/or Walt on the plane does not mean they are not on it. The creators of LOST go a long way to show us exactly what they want us to, when they want us to. We are often led to believe one thing, only to be showed we were mislead... Locke and his wheelchair come to mind, or seeing bearded Jack before we knew we were post-crash rather than pre-crash. There-is-no-spoon 07:02, February 4, 2010 (UTC)There-is-no-spoon

This is a non-issue. Unless it's evident they're joking, they're a canonical source for Lostpedia. Cheers,  Robert K S   tell me  07:15, February 4, 2010 (UTC)

Seth Norris' wife

Are we keeping the page, Seth Norris' wife? If so, I can edit delete, so that is gone!--Station7 15:47, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

We have a few deletes and a few keeps in the discussion; I'm for letting it stay open a little while longer... it's not harming anything. This is sort of like the "Sayid's father" article we had for a long time. The only thing we knew about him for a few years was that he was a war hero. Then one episode he made an appearance.  Robert K S   tell me  16:35, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

This is not a joke

Hello Robert K S, I'm going to ask you a weird question, but could I use the thing from Under construction on my user page. It's a mess and it need to cleaned-up. What is your idea about this? There is many information missing as well, as missing dates etc. This is the page where I'm working to the most on. So everybody knows who I am. It needs to cleaned-up or under construction.

It's really a mess. I would at least use: Clean-up or Under construction. What is your idea about this? I'm not joking.--Station7 21:33, February 7, 2010 (UTC)

Hey Rob I was wondering why LAX, Parts 1 & 2 still have "none" listed as centric on the Template:Season6nav page. Its pretty obvious that it is various (jack, kate, sayid, james, jin, sun, hugo, john). Can you fix this? -- B1G CZYGS  Talk  Contribs  21:44, February 9, 2010 (UTC)

Double redirect

Can you make Talk:Opk redirect to Talk:Lindsey (Claire's aunt) as it is a redirect to Talk:Lindsey and because it is a protected article I can't change it myself. --Orhan94 08:28, February 11, 2010 (UTC)

Seth Norris

I saw you re-created Alt Arzt's article and I wanted to ask whether a Seth Norris (flash-sideways timeline) article should be created? Even though his role was small, Shannon didn't even appear yet she got her Alt article, though I presume she got her article because she was a main character in the original timeline. Therefore I'm not really sure if alt Seth justifies it's own article or not. --Orhan94 09:36, February 12, 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure I'm up to date. Is there an "official" answer to "Flash-sideways" vs. "Parallel?" I wanted to undo an edit, but...--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 19:37, February 12, 2010 (UTC)

For my part, I'm using flash-sideways (adjective) and flash sideways (verb and noun). It's the term used in the Enhanced episodes, Official Lost Podcast and scripts (see Geronimo Jack's Beard episode 2). As for "alternate", Darlton has specifically said they don't like or use the term (see EW interview and first podcast of the year). As for "parallel", we have no indication that the two timelines are indeed parallel and they may interweave in ways we will not be able to forecast (again, see first podcast). As for other proposed terms like "reset", there may be no indication against their use but they have had no use in official channels and we don't seem to have sufficient positive consensus for their use, so it seems unlikely that they will prevail over the officially-used term. There was initially a lot of dislike of the term "flash sideways" by a small but vocal segment of our editors but I trust that as the term gains more and more cachet, the hater hubbub will die down.  Robert K S   tell me  21:44, February 12, 2010 (UTC)

Tracking centricity

Hi Robert,

I made a change to John Locke that I thought was productive. Another user undid my change and, since I don't think it's worth getting involved in an editing war, I've had a discussion and let it ride.

It may help to look at what transpired to get my point.

My overall concern is that we're (almost always) tracking statistical data in more than one place and that we'll never gets all those places to agree. I'm a retired database developer and I think I understand the technical details. Infobox Character contains a data element called Centric which is used to display the episodes which were centric to that character. (No idiot lesson intended.) We also track centricity through categories. In Locke's case, it's Category:Locke-centric. The category's contents disagree with the Infobox entry, or at least they did this afternoon. I submit that we should maintain data in one place and that the category structure is the best place to do that. I do not think, as the other editor alleged, that having to click on a link is that big a deal. If the entries in the category are wrong then we should fix the pages that improperly cite or fail to cite the category. I did that in part today by deleting Category:Locke-centric from the John Locke page because the category is defined as episodes that are Locke-centric and the character page is not an episode.

I think this is an administrator issue, rather than a community issue because a lot of (most?) people don't understand data structures. I hope you and the other admins will kick it around.

--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 21:41, February 12, 2010 (UTC)

I'll bring it up, thanks.  Robert K S   tell me  21:52, February 12, 2010 (UTC)
Afterthought: The Infobox could be modifed to Centric = PAGENAME-centric (I'd have to test that!) In the case of Locke (and probably others), we'd need a redirect.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 22:25, February 12, 2010 (UTC)

Portal colors

Hey there seems to be a problem with ObiDanKenobi5 regarding the flash-sideways portal. After seeing the talk page I noticed some of the users were initially confused regarding why everyone was listed as green which throughout the portals on site means "on-island" so I fixed it to go with every other portal on the site and made them all blue, due to the fact they are indeed off-island. Well he then reverted my edits and it seems like reverting them back will only result in a edit war. So am I wrong because I though we were using the same color scheme for all portals. For instance if miles and frank died we wouldnt change the kahana portal from red to green for deceased just because we no longer need "on-island" its just something thats gonna confuse people. I also found this link 2 -- B1G CZYGS  Talk  Contribs  20:02, February 13, 2010 (UTC)

So what's your question? I don't see this as an admin issue, unless you're asking for sysop enforcement of some uniform color scheme. This is something that should be worked out amongst the editors.  Robert K S   tell me  22:15, February 13, 2010 (UTC)

There's no firm "policy" about this, it's just something that Pyramidhead started doing, and I think most editors saw that it was sensible enough to be left/continued. 14:17, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

a question

After creating categories for character occupations do you think it will be a good idea to create and add categories about character nationalities (American, English, Scottish, Australian, French, German, Iraqi, Korean, Italian, Russian, Thai, Tunisian and Nigerian are the ones I can think of now but I'm sure there are more). I'll add them only to characters with confirmed nationality though some of the American may need to be sub-categorized to Pakistani American (Shop clerk), Vietnamese American (Mr. and Mrs. Tron) etc. If you agree I'll start the others asap though the American may be a problem though not a one this community can't handle. --Orhan94 23:38, February 16, 2010 (UTC)

The only problem that I could foresee is that some editors may confused a nationality category for an ethnicity category and users might edit war to "claim" various characters for their favorite ethnicities. Nationality is a legal status that in most cases is well-defined but ethnicity may be considerably more vague. Obviously, there will be many characters for which neither nationality nor ethnicity is known and editors may be tempted to add their unconfirmed guesses.  Robert K S   tell me  14:16, February 18, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for the late response. I see the problem you presented. I think that adding categories has been a problem in the past, the ones users create on theory and blog pages are the ones that currently come to my mind though I'm sure there have been more, especially since the add a category button was added on Wikia. Therefore I think I'll stick to occupation categories for now. Thanks anyway :). --Orhan94 23:04, March 4, 2010 (UTC)

Archived Character Appearances

Hey I was just wondering, on the season 6 main page, I assumed that when a character appeared in archived footage, we credited them on the main page. Several characters appeared in last weeks episode in archived footage (Jack, Jacob, etc.) but the main page still only credited them for appearing in the episodes in which they appeared in new footage, so I edited it to reflect their appearances in the archived footage. But it was edited back to showing them as uncredited, multiple times, and i'm a little confused. Whats the policy on this? InflatableBombshelter 21:36, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

Edit wars

Robert, I just wanted to let you know about User:Asublues, who has been edit warring with me over at Jacob/Theories. I explained the rules of the theory pages and what may be deleted, but this user won't hear it. This is also the second time he or she has edit warred with me... you can see the previous time in his/her contribution history. In that instance, I reverted Asublues's edit because it incorrectly changed an article's tense from the past to the present. I explained it in the edit summary, but he/she just continued to undo my edits. There is obviously no reasoning with this user... perhaps you could step in? Thanks! -- Managerpants  Contribs  Talk  17:44, February 23, 2010 (UTC)

Hi Robert, this is Asublues, please look into this. First off he didn't change the tense on his first undo (told, tells are both acceptable past tense) he changed the word back to reveal. Reveal does not mean the same thing, he then yells at me in all caps saying that we know it is poison because the page is named Dogen's poison... If you look at his contributions you will see that he editwars with a lot of people as that is mainly what he does. He simply reads other's posts and if he can't understand it or it isn't what he thinks he makes an unfounded statement like "it's obvious" and deletes the theory. The whole point of Lostpedia is to get theories out there for feedback. If we have people constantly deleting theories then it defeats the whole purpose. In the end he changed tells to told and I left it alone, my point was to not mislead people to thinking there was some proof that it was poison, and his only purpose is to mess with people's posts.--Asublues 20:04, February 23, 2010 (UTC)

...and that's patently false. I don't edit war with anyone, actually. I undo a lot of bad edits for sure, because someone has to keep the tripe off of here. I have just been trying to get you follow the rules of the site, but you continue to ignore them. You need to understand that your writing will be edited on here, so you can't be possessive. -- Managerpants  Contribs  Talk  20:10, February 23, 2010 (UTC)
The edit warring doesn't interest me much (I'm sure the two of you will figure that out between yourselves), but I'm interested to learn that "tells" is a past-tense conjugation. A verb conjugator [3] doesn't have anything about this. I'm much more familiar with Managerpants's edit history than Asublues, so without seeing diffs illustrating specific instances of misconduct to be acted on, I'm more inclined to trust Managerpants. But again, that's only because I've seen Managerpants's edits a lot more. I don't want to be biased, but I don't have time to page through your edit histories looking for trouble, so if there are specific issues or edit wars that you guys think need some mediation, feel free to bring them to me. And enjoy Lost!  Robert K S   tell me  16:17, February 24, 2010 (UTC)

Plktrn seems to have protected Nalini for "vandalism," but it also effectively locked a bunch of templates including Template:Infobox Character. I and another user have asked him to unprotect it, but he hasn't responded. Could you do it? --Pyramidhead 08:09, February 28, 2010 (UTC)

OK.  Robert K S   tell me  17:03, February 28, 2010 (UTC)
You seemed to try to remove protection from Infobox Character, which is an unprotected article itself. The issue is that Nalini is protected with cascading mode, preventing transcluded templates from being protected. Nalini is the article that needs protection removed. -CapitalQ 21:08, March 1, 2010 (UTC)
Just a bump--this is still an issue. If admins are concerned about future vandalism on Nalini, its protection need not be removed--the only thing that needs to be fixed is removing cascading protection from Nalini. -CapitalQ 04:53, March 4, 2010 (UTC)
I tried to turn the cascading protection off but didn't see this particular option. I unprotected the article but let me know if the problem persists.  Robert K S   tell me  06:42, March 4, 2010 (UTC)

Administrator rights?

Hallo Robert K S, as you know I report many times vandalism and I make many times delete things so you can delete it. But this takes some times a few days and I would like to enjoy the team. As you know, there has been in the past of Lostpedia a missunderstanding about having '3 users' but that thing is solved. Further I do no harm at all and I delete those pages immediality. Since I'm from the Netherlands, it's not hard anymore to write in English language. I hope that I can help, because there is blog post that are is created as a article. Also I hate spoilers especially about "the new episodes", where we should have to wait a week for. My name is Robert to. I hope that I can help. Think about this and otherwise talk about the team. Cheers,--Station7 21:13, March 1, 2010 (UTC)

I certainly appreciate your position, but the best I can do is bring your name up when I next see nominations come up in the admin forum. I can't make or unmake SysOps, and nominations for new SysOps are generally only proposed when there is a labor shortage or participation shortage and the need presents itself for added administrative labor. See here for more.  Robert K S   tell me  07:29, March 2, 2010 (UTC)
We have a prime example of "participation shortage" going on in the community blogs today, with Jt8845 purposely posting spoilers and flaunting it and acting like an immature jerk when others complain about his actions, and the fact that he's been allowed to do this all day and he's still not banned at the time of this edit. Clearly this has revealed a flaw in the system and a lack of overall admin manpower on this site. --Celebok 02:42, March 5, 2010 (UTC)
I agree, since moving to Wikia vandals, spoilers and trolling has increased yet the number of admins has decreased with only 6 of them patrolling the site from time to time. I think that a new admin may not be such a bad idea, though I'll agree with whatever the admins decide to do. --Orhan94 11:47, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

Could you delete this article and ban the user who created it. Also can you delete his blog comments in which he posts other spoilers and I've seen certain users starting polls on blogspaces on whether to have his IP address banned for spoiling people on LP. --Orhan94 09:25, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

  • Also User:Fixman for vandalizing LP by creating an offensive redirect to Kate's article and other offensive posts on talk pages (see Talk:Lost Untangled). And could you delete Play by "The Rules" as it's been nominated for a delete other times but other users have removed the delete banner. I'm sorry if I'm bothering you but I can only rollback edits and lately vandals prefer creating articles and redirects instead of just clearing out articles like they used to. --Orhan94 09:31, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

In response to comments about his spoilers, User:Jt8845 has posted what I would call an offensive image and text on his talk page. You deleted his spoilers; it's time to "delete" him.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 17:25, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jim, please send me some diffs showing enforceable misbehavior on Jt8845's part. I don't have time to go through his whole contribution history and check up on him. I did, however, issue bans to two users who posted uncivil messages on his talk page. User:Loganmac posted an image of a phallus and User:Xabial12 also posted an uncivil message. If anyone has problems with a particular user, the correct course of action is to alert an admin with specific information (diffs, please) and post a civil message to the offending user's talk page. Well-intended but uncivil messages will backfire as they will only result in administrative action directed at those who post uncivil talk messages.  Robert K S   tell me  20:37, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

First, I want to thank you for dealing with User:Jt8845. He/she was very much an out-of-control problem on the blogs yesterday. Second, this is just a suggestion, but I would suggest changing the ban on User:Xabial12 to be non-permanent, either three days or a week, instead of indefinite. I agree that the message he left on Jt8845's talk page was very inappropriate and should not be allowed, but I can say with certainty that it was done in frustration of Jt8845's ongoing behavior in the blogs and the fact that nothing was being done about it. Many of us felt the same way, and I believe that Xabial12's edit was merely an impulsive act of desperation, with an attitude of, the admins aren't around, so I'll take matters into my own hands. Again, this is just my opinion, but I don't believe his ban should be permanent for this one-time offense. I'm not sure if I would say the same thing for User:Loganmac, but I'll leave that up to your discretion as well. --Celebok 22:18, March 5, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Because of your advocacy on another user's behalf, I will adjust Xabial12's ban to one week. This user is welcomed back to participate and I hope the user will do so and enjoy Lostpedia. I know it sucks to be banned, even for a short time, but I hope the user will be able to take it in stride. You're telling me that you vouch for this user and you're putting your own credibility on the line, so that counts for something.  Robert K S   tell me  22:25, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

Robert K S: Thank you. Not only for removing jt8845, but also for appealing the ban on Xabial12. S/He lashed out in frustration as several others have. The situation with jt8845 was simply ridiculous and a lot of things were said in the heat of the moment. I also vouch for Xabial12. Thank you, again. Best Regards, BMetcalf82 22:33, March 5, 2010 (UTC)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE change LP to block all new users... a spoiler-happy vandal just wreaked havoc today on multiple blog pages and I see no other way to stop this type of blatant abuse between now and Series Finale except to block them all. A user User:Golden Monkey has continually been changing the episode count for several characters who only appear in the fs timeline in certain episodes, the only problem is this was never discussed and half the site has different episode totals then the other half. He removes the "as of" which makes the totals even more confusing. I came up with a compromise which was counting the totals and adding a note in the trivia (which he agreed with) but he continues to undo my edits. Not only that but he has a habbit of attacking users in edit summaries he has done this before 4 and is doing it to me now. He claims im the only one yet on the character histories you can see several other people adding the appearances. Considering according to him im the only one you think he would discuss it The funny thing is he will not discuss it, his words: "This is not even up for debate. Flash-sideways Boone IS NOT BOONE. This is over, and I will revert any changes made to the episode count." I may be wrong about the totals but it still needs to be discussed because this is ridiculous. -- B1G CZYGS  Talk  Contribs  21:42, March 17, 2010 (UTC)

Why would I expect you to do anything. Your incompetence knows no bounds. Probably because your from Ohio. I hope you eventually learn not to stand by and let idiocy occur like it does on this site. I really do wish you the best. -- B1G CZYGS  Talk  Contribs  02:32, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
I don't think that's either fair or nice. If you want me to do something for you, you have to tell me what you want me to do. Do you want me to side with you in a content dispute and issue a warning to another user? Do you want me to issue a ban? I've said before, I don't have time to go hunting for mischief. If you want action taken, leave me diffs with clear instances of misconduct. Otherwise, develop your powers of persuasion and bring other parties over to your way of thinking. Lostpedia isn't an autocracy, and admins don't lord power over editors when one editor posts a rambling complaint. The next time you post to my talk page, I hope you will be clear, be concise, and be civil.  Robert K S   tell me  02:38, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
I apologize for part of my comment I am somewhat upset because I had thought you were ignoring me, still no excuse. But the fact that an ass (which is not an attack but a fact) like GoldenMonkey is allowed to run around on this site enforce his opinion and bully anyone who doesnt agree with him. Ive seen this guy attack other users who hes had a dispute with and now hes gonna do it to me. I cant just ignore him he needs to be banned. His antics are unnaceptable.-- B1G CZYGS  Talk  Contribs  02:44, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
It sounds like you want me to ban GoldenMonkey. The next step would be for you to leave me one or more diffs showing clear instances of misconduct. So far it sounds like you want me to ban him just because the two of you disagree over how something ought to be done on the wiki. I don't think that sufficient reason. Is there an edit war? Has there been a civility problem? I reviewed both your talk pages and didn't really see any incivility. Remember, eventually things cool down to a steady state. If you don't like actions he's taking, and they're really objectively bad, you don't need to fight the battle alone; others will come around to your way of thinking if you are persuasive.  Robert K S   tell me  03:07, March 19, 2010 (UTC)
After thinking things over I just wanna get past this beef with Goldenmonkey our problem is over character appearances in fs timeline only. I think they should count for both main and fs character he doesnt. Right now half the site has different totals than the other half. Even if i am worng here I think it should be discussed on his end because this would change a lot of articles and right nor there are alot of mistakes. I had the problem with another user and reported it to CTS his response can be seen here 5 he hasnt been around much lately so I was hoing you could get GMonkey to discuss this. -- B1G CZYGS  Talk  Contribs  23:06, March 19, 2010 (UTC)

Appeal regarding user Sean Sheep

I believe the user SeanSheep has been banned, perhaps because of a claim that he posted a spoiler. I should say that he has denied to me that he has any information from anywhere regarding spoilers. I accept his claim, my dealings with him at this wiki have been completely trustworthy. Sean Sheep is a prolific theoriser with some of the most thorough, rigorous, interesting and intelligent (enthusiatic too) ideas of any that I have read on this site. He is also a stickler for Lostpedia guidelines and rules, and regrettably this has gotten him into some disagreements (with me included). He has resolved these fairly and properly. By his suggestions he has also been extremely helpful to me in my participation at this Wiki. Whilst I am sure that no member is indispensable his loss would leave a considerable gap - especially on the episode theory pages. A gap that no other writer can currently fill (because no one else is addressing the timeline and split theories and their ramifications like Sean is). The loss would be all the greater because as Sean Sheep himself says many of his theories are a work in progress. I for one would like to see how his work plays out. Sean is at work on this wiki in a myriad of other ways so there are many reasons to reconsider any ban that may have been imposed. As to the probable offence. Nothing that he wrote could not be imagined by a serious thinker about Lost. Many of his prognostications were mine also, and I am barely a deep thinker. At this point in Lost it is inevitable that some people will get close to the mark about what is to come - and that is especially so with someone like Sean Sheep whose knowledge and analysis are of such a high standard. Please allow user sean sheep back in asap --Charles Kane 09:23, March 23, 2010 (UTC)

Ban of Sean Sheep unwarranted

Please reconsider the ban on user Sean Sheep. To be honest, I am not what you would consider a hard core lost fan, but I have enjoyed all that Lostpedia has added to my understanding of the show. One of the most helpful, respectful, insightful contributors who has enriched my viewing is Sean Sheep. I do not understand his ban based on discussion of a possible Richard centric episode which even my 11 year old could deduce based on abc promos. I do not always agree with Sean Sheep's theories but always find them thoughtful. If someone who so respects the show and this wiki could be banned, then I feel that my own contributions will be put under such scrutiny that perhaps I should also stop posting.--Destinedjourney 00:53, March 24, 2010 (UTC)

I have entered into a rather one-sided conversation with him on his talk page. Exodus Part 3

Dude, you can't just say "There was no Exodus Part 3". It's listed as a separate episode on the DVD box set. In fact it has its own DVD. Also it makes more sense to split Exodus into three parts since it was three times as long as a regular episode.Rtozier 20:07, April 18, 2010 (UTC)

Lostpedia has long kept the episode naming consistent with how the episodes were named in their original airings and the accompanying press releases. But that's a bit beside the point: it's not relevant how many "Exodus" parts there were to that particular section, and there's no need to list them all and provide links to them. Can you help me?

Can you help me at [8]? There's a discussion we have there. There's an user called "Jdray" that discusses everything I post, and he won't understand. I'm saying that the events of "The last recruit" happened a week later of O815, but he keeps saying no. Can you help me? Because I'm kind of tired. Can you do a Sys-Op weight in? --Dr. James (4 8 15 16 23 42) 04:47, April 26, 2010 (UTC)

I've been following that and it sounds interesting. I would have weighed in if I had something useful to contribute, but at this point I don't. Let's let it simmer for awhile and see what happens. In the coming weeks we might get some more clarity. Either that, or there might just be some unresolved chronology issues. ("Dr. Linus" already presents some major problems with the studying for the "AP test".)  Robert K S   tell me  05:05, April 26, 2010 (UTC)
I still could use some help, because (according to me) I'm the one who is making more sense. Some users agreed with me. But this user -Jdray-, doesn't and is making some trouble. If he doesn't agree then we're gonna have trouble with that article, whenever we want to edit it because he'll be there, contradicting himself, making nonsense points. So help please. I need somebody (and not just anybody). --Dr. James (4 8 15 16 23 42) 06:29, April 26, 2010 (UTC)
Everybody's trying to work this out in good faith. It doesn't need to be a war of personalities. If Jdray has it wrong, someone else will come along and correct it eventually.  Robert K S   tell me  13:48, April 26, 2010 (UTC)

Lostpedia after Lost

Years ago in U.S. Army Europe they had a list of "Too Hard Questions," like "How do we provide decent housing for the troops (without spending billions of dollars)?" That kind of stuff. You may have given us a "too hard question." 8)

Having slept on your idea, I'm warming to it. There are challenges.

I thought I'd field this idea here first rather than on the Ideas page. I know other people can read this but at least it's not in the center ring.

  • Christian Shephard
    • We would have to break his page into Christian Shephard (on-Island) and Christian Shephard (off-Island) pages. The on-Island page would never mention the fact that he was actually "John Doe;" that information would appear in a section of the "John Doe" page.
    • Each page could take advantage of Redirect, but neither could suggest the presence of "John Doe."
    • Links in any episode page -- and for the matter, any other page - would go to the appropriate Christian Shephard page: "Jack saw his father, who he knew to be dead, standing amid the trees and ran after him but was unable to catch him." We would no longer be able to use redirects like "Christian" unless we agreed on which Christian the redirect pointed to.
  • John Locke would be treated in a similar fashion.
  • Henry Gale
    • All references to Henry, including the character page, would be to the character portrayed by Michael Emerson. Information about the real Henry Gale would appear on Ben's page.
    • Readers would hopefully not read the Ben page until after his true identity is revealed.
  • We'd have to somehow rework the portals to ensure that Ben couldn't be seen before his time.
  • At some point, do we lock down the "final version?" (Wow! Separate question!)
  • All of this can be done, but I am concerned that the size of our "staff" will be greatly reduced after the finale, in spite of good intentions.

Jim --Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 00:01, May 10, 2010 (UTC)

I don't think we need to do all of the above. My main concern is that we protect against retroactive scrubbing of the encyclopedia's episode articles given whatever we learn from the finale. We are bound to discover some game-changers. I would prefer not to get into a situation where we have editors going nuts with retcon-type revisions. I think the issues with the mystery characters (Gale, Christian, Locke) are rather the least of our worries in this respect, but they are certainly part of the overall picture. I never proposed we break up character articles and I don't really see the advantage in doing so, just as I don't believe we should re-split The Monster from The Man in Black.  Robert K S   tell me  01:19, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
No, breaking up the character pagres wass my bright(?) idea.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 02:24, May 10, 2010 (UTC)

See frozen wheel. The donkey wheel was conceived of by MiB (as seen in the most recent episode), who was part of the group that built the wells. However the chamber was not completed/re-built during his time, it was completed during the same period as the "Egyptians" (whoever they were). We know this because the completed frozen wheel chamber has hieroglyphic decoration, a hall-mark of the Tawaret/Temple culture.

Another obvious clue is the references to MiB in his smoke monster form that appears in the hieroglyphs in the Temple.--Krsont 01:53, May 13, 2010 (UTC)

Interesting. The problem, of course, is that the rise of Egyptian power predated the rise of Roman power and one would think that the Egyptians would have come before the Latin speakers. Maybe the Egyptians flashed in from the past at some point.  Robert K S   tell me  02:11, May 13, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm aware of that, but obviously that's only a problem when we bring in ideas and facts that are outside of those we're presented with in the show. The actual show itself gives us the reading I gave above. I posted on another talk page offering some explanations for this possible error, I'll copy-paste them here:
First, it might not necessarily be an error: the oldest records of Latin go back to around 400 BC. At this time some Egyptians, especially in the rural south of the country, still worshipped old Egyptian gods and retained knowledge of hieroglyphs. It would not be completely unbelievable, in the context of the fiction of the show, that some of these people would flee to the island as a safe haven in the hope of re-establishing Egyptian civilisation there at a later date.
Another thing to remember is that objects that come to the island sometimes suffer from time dilation or other effects (the flash on the Ajira flight) that cause shifts in time. The Latin speakers, including Claudia, may have approached the island in the 1st century but were flung back in time, or alternatively the Egyptians approached the island in the distant past but landed centuries later, after the events of Across the Sea.
We could also just chalk it up to a simple research error, or intentional choice on the part of the writers to deviate from history. They wanted to get Latin into the episode to explain why the Others speak it as their secret language, so they could have ignored real world history in the interest of telling a good story. --Krsont 17:49, May 12, 2010 (UTC)

Various Problems I Didn't Know Where to Report

  • Hey ... sorry about coming to you on your talk page about this, but I didn't know what would be the best place to do so, I tried to file a report on the problem log but couldn't figure out how. Anyway, for the past few days, whenever I make an edit, the toolbar hasn't been showing up (signature button, etc) and I'm unable to collapse navbars, which are shown now by default, taking up a LOT of place on screen. Is this a local problem, or something affecting the wikia as a whole? I understand that you may not be the best person to contact which such a problem, but if that is indeed the case, would you be so kind as to refer me to / pass it on to the appropriate person? Thanks a bunch :) LeoChris 05:23, May 19, 2010 (UTC)
    • I don't know... I do see only a "make a map" button above the text edit field, so that's weird, right? Which navbars can't you collapse?  Robert K S   tell me  05:30, May 19, 2010 (UTC)
      • Pretty much all of them, I haven't encountered a collapsable one today. But, I've first noticed the problem with characters' navboxes, such as the ones on this page LeoChris 05:35, May 19, 2010 (UTC)

Agree/Disagree discussions

It's ok for another user to update a discussion with agree/disagree templates. I just did so on the rename discussion for The Source, and noticed you undid a change another user did for the same thing. As long as it's in good faith, doesn't misrepresent a standpoint and doesn't change the content of someone's comments, formatting changes like this are ok. It would be great if we could get those templates added as buttons on the edit toolbar.    Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 19:52, May 25, 2010 (UTC)

Reply You could add them to MediaWiki:Edittools, just as I did here. cgmv123TalkContribsE-mail 21:10, May 25, 2010 (UTC)
No :-) I strongly disagree with this practice, both in general and particularly as it was used by User:Sauronsmatrix in that edit. You cannot add an agree/disagree template to someone's comments without coloring their comments. In that case, in one instance, someone merely asked a question, and User:Sauronsmatrix turned it into an agree template. Additionally, that user added the "+" agree templates to his name multiple times in the discussion, so if someone were trying to gauge consensus by counting votes, they would get a skewed count. Moreover, that particular discussion was not offering a clear choice between two options, so even if there was a large number of "Agree"s, it might not indicate consensus, as many of the "Agrees" might be for disparate minority positions. I think in limited circumstances this should be appropriate to do (e.g., if the content is clearly supposed to be a vote but several voters forgot the templates), but I'd rather not see it become standard practice on the wiki. Sauronsmatrix eventually just moved the page himself, which I'm still trying to figure out how he managed, since he's not a sysop.  Robert K S   tell me  23:09, May 25, 2010 (UTC)

Problems again

Hi, I'm having problems again at Talk:Timeline:Flash-sideways timeline. This user -again- Jdray is commenting all over the page, saying sometimes stuff that make no sense, he's altering also the article without commenting it to us first (I've actually undid the change). Also, he's posting some messages that are directly against me - all because a week I assumed, and many people agreed, to match up the FST. I've tried to calm him down, but with no success. I warned him and said that I would bring an administrator, and he challenged me to do it. So I may use some of your help there... Thanks and sorry to bother you again. --Dr. James (4 8 15 16 23 42) 05:03, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

He's still insisting, providing no solution. He's now even deleting my replies, man! You can check the history of the article! I'm sick of this! Could be that considered vandalism? He has obviously disrespected me! --Dr. James (4 8 15 16 23 42) 14:41, May 28, 2010 (UTC)
If you want me to ban someone, you're going to have to leave me diffs with specific instances of misconduct or make a case for a broad pattern, again by leaving me diffs. I can't spend time hunting through edit histories.  Robert K S   tell me  14:44, May 28, 2010 (UTC)
Of course, look: [10]. Now that I see it, he deleted TWO of my messages at the same time. That without mentioning the personal attacks I've received there. --Dr. James (4 8 15 16 23 42) 14:56, May 28, 2010 (UTC)
The fact that the posts were made close together in time indicates to me that these were not necessarily malicious deletions but more likely edit conflicts. And why would you fail to bring personal attacks to the attention of administrators? If there were bona fide personal attacks on the record, they should have been addressed.  Robert K S   tell me  14:59, May 28, 2010 (UTC)

Hi where can I go to vent

I just, i read a post from faradayallday and he says i've been banned from the threads for being a troll. i got nothing against him but he could of at least asked an admin or at least go on the wiki since i'm on here now. Im mildly autistic btw so that's a problem but I'm not a troll, i'm not against anybody here but hes making my mind only think about faradayallday. i do not want to be obessesed with a user and i do not want to be torutred by something which cant be fixed. If i was a troll then i would do the same stuff "the source" did and just flame people, attack people, crizize people and tell people to kill themselves. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place but i feel like I need to just get this out. I was banned for creating a sockpuppet which I did not do, if I was banned for being a troll then it would say "you're banned for being a troll". that's what it would say. also can you tell me ways to relax and calm myself down? --Lostwillnevarend 15:13, June 5, 2010 (UTC)

Whew! I'm glad you got that all out. Sadly, I have no idea what you're talking about. Is this an issue in the blog space? Is this an issue on an article talk page? I've never heard of "faradayallday". Are you sure that you're banned? If you're banned, how were you able to post to my talk page? The block log doesn't show you as ever having been banned.  Robert K S   tell me  17:16, June 5, 2010 (UTC)
Hi, these issues are related to the forums, I'm sorry I forgot to tell you this. I can't seem to find anyone on this wiki who's also a forum moderator, I just want to get my view out that I did not create a sockpuppet account and I was not banned for being a troll, trolls cause anger and hate. i have only had like 3 or 4 people hate me in the forums and I did not get banned for being a troll, just for the reason of "creating a sockpuppet account", which I did not do. --Lostwillnevarend 01:25, June 6, 2010 (UTC)

Just because you "didnt get that sense" doesn't mean it's wrong

Go back and watch the concert, everyone is ridiculously white... I dont think anyone would argue that its not a "ghostly look." I mean the characters look gray, you can hardly even tell what color their clothes are. If we didn't know the flash-sideways was an afterlife MAYBE you could argue it was a production error, but it is clearly an allusion to the fact that they are dead. I've worked in production for 5 years and if that was not their intent then its the most poorly-lit scene I have ever witnessed. The Dirty 15:32, June 7, 2010 (UTC)

Which characters, which shots? The only thing I vaguely remember being like that was the backlighting on Dr. Chang. If you're going to make me upload screenshots, I will, but this is rather a waste of both our times. You're the one who came up with this idea--it should be incumbent on you to conclusively, irrefutably prove that this was the intent of the lighting, to foreshadow that they were all dead.  Robert K S   tell me  15:35, June 7, 2010 (UTC)

(1) Harassment, taunting, etc. is against policy and admins have discretion remove it wherever they find it. (2) Sockpuppetry is not tolerated on Lostpedia and the proper admin response to a sockpuppet is to promptly ban the sockpuppet and revert all edits made by the sockpuppet. Banning TomCaruso

WHOA! WHOA! WHOA! That is actually quite horrible of you to do that to him/her! I mean, you want him/her to sign their posts, but how is he/her going to learn if you ban them for 30 days, they are just going to forget even more! And you are taking this a bit too seriously. Banned for 30 days for forgetting to sign a post. And off subject. I think you administrators need to sort out your 'banning' system. I mean, I have seen somebody being banned for 'infinite' because they accidentally put incorrect information on pages. And then, somebody else got banned for 30 days for direct vandalism. And now someone else is getting 30 days just for forgetting a post. You really need to sort it out, it is crazy! JinKwon4eva 17:51, August 5, 2010 (UTC)

  • Okay :P I keep forgetting that :P Sorry :) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JinKwon4eva (talkcontribs) .

I'm reducing this ban to 3 days since the punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime. Unsigned messages can be annoying to deal with, but it is more confusing to blog and forum users that aren't used to manually signing comments. On the user blog comments here, you don't have to sign comments. I believe Wikia is working on creating a single comment system for blogs and talk pages.    Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 19:34, August 6, 2010 (UTC)

Okay, as far as I know, trolling can get you banned on lostpedia, as Metroid101 said that he was banned for trolling previously. And as far as I know, trolling is making stupid, mean sarcastic comments on deliberately.

Anyway, I would like to report BalkOfFame for trolling. For the past few weeks? I have noticed he has been making several comments in blogs which are sarcastic and they really don't belong there. Some, even there just to make people worry. Such as today, BalkOfFame said to me today that 'Too late. Reported you for spoilers.' When I clearly didn't reveal any spoilers. Although it didn't bother me, it is clear this comment was made to make me worry. And it isn't just me, I have noticed him saying this to other people in the past as well. I don't think that just because he is one of the top users that he should get special privileges, so if you could deal with this, maybe have a word with him, it would be much appreciated.

-- Julietfan2626 Talk Blogs

BalkOfFame (good)

Okay long story short, the admin, User:Mr.Leaf, has been inactive for nearly 9 months. Clearly he has packed up and forgotten about lostpedia, or he doesn't care any more. And please, save me an argument, no he won't come back. Anyway, I was thinking, and clearly other people are on board with this, that you take away Mr. Leaf's admin privileges, and give them to BalkOfFame. Now, why? Let's compare the two users:

  • Active daily
  • Makes tonnes of edits, over 13,000
  • They are good quality edits
  • He is kind to everyone
  • Doesn't argue or get involved in arguments (If he does, it is to resolve them)
  • He is smart and a valuable user to this wikia.

Mr. Leaf

  • Hasn't been on for 9 months
  • People clearly have forgotten him

Now you have no reason to decline this absolutely reasonable and acceptable request. Also BalkOfFame is on board with the idea of becoming an admin. To see other peoples thoughts, please visit and read this blog, respect more people will comment in time, but it is clear they want him as an admin, and Mr. Leaf out. User blog:Julietfan2626/I need a lot of your opinions...
