Role & Rank
- Responsible for the Others' "public relations."
- He is the right-hand man to "Him", similar to Ben, although perhaps Ben's inferior.
- Despite the fact that we find out his name is Tom at the end of the 2nd season, the closed captioning during the 3rd season episode "I Do" labeled him "Friendly." Could his name thus be Tom Friendly?
Nickname Origins
- While Sawyer's nickname for him, "Zeke", is most likely based on his stereotypical "hillbilly" appearance and demeanor ("Zeke" is a derogatory name for a hillbilly), it could also be a reference to:
- The banjo player for "Lubbock Lou and His Jughuggers" on The Muppet Show. That Zeke also had wild hair and a shabby beard, but frequently wore sunglasses.
- The Big Bad Wolf in the 1933 Disney animation "The Three Little Pigs". Zeke Wolf also used disguises in an attempt to trick the Three Little Pigs. The fact that Sawyer used the name "Zeke" may imply that he could tell that Tom's beard was part of a disguise.
- Shortly before having Kate brought out to be released, Zeke was faced by three people from the front half of the plane.
- The Wizard of Oz, in which Zeke was a farmhand who worked for Dorothy's uncle Henry Gale back in Kansas.
- Benjamin Linus, formerly known as "Henry Gale", seems to be at a higher level in the Others' chain of command than Tom, which could indicate that Tom "works" for him.
DHARMA Connections
- A link between the Others and the DHARMA Initiative is insinuated when Tom is seen working in one of the DHARMA Stations, though the Others may have just "set up shop" in that station, like the Flight 815 survivors have in the Swan.
- In "Live Together, Die Alone", a tattoo can be seen on his chest which looks similar to the design of a DHARMA Initiative logo.
Character Connections
- He knew Ana Lucia. She gave Christian Shephard the nickname "Tom", because she saw a resemblance between the two.
- He is the "real" Sawyer, as in "Tom Sawyer."
- The "real" Sawyer went by "Frank Sawyer"; however, "Tom" may not be his real first name, but a nickname given because his last name was Sawyer.
- Hibbs most likely only told Sawyer that the original Sawyer's first name was Frank to account for the first name of Frank Duckett; he was probably lying and doesn't really know anything about the original Sawyer outside of what James Ford has told him.
- The Others don't call Sawyer "Sawyer," but "James."
- The "real" Sawyer went by "Frank Sawyer"; however, "Tom" may not be his real first name, but a nickname given because his last name was Sawyer.
- His full name could be "Thomas Hobbes" in accordance with the pattern of naming characters after social contract philosophers. (Thomas Hobbes was a contemporary and rival of John Locke).
- The built tension between Tom and Sawyer's characters will perhaps result in an eventful confrontation between the two in the future.
- Possibly one of the US army officials Sayid meets in Iraq when interrogating Tarik in the episode "One of Them".
- Wears the beard so as not to be recognized from previous encounters before the crash.
- This would also explain why he was not sent to either crash site by Ben, seeing as the others appear to have a great deal of information on the survivors.
- Because of the physical resemblance, may be related to Mike.
"Not My Type"
- He tells Kate that she is "not his type" in A Tale of Two Cities. What is his type?
- He is homosexual - it was revealed in the October 30 2006 podcast that we may find out a character is gay.
- His type is "Good People" as opposed to "Bad People".
- Maybe she simply isn't his physical type (he doesn't find her attractive).
- He is a part of the other faction of The Others, because he was not seen in Otherville.
- He told her this simply to stop her getting the wrong idea.
- He is engaged. When he pushes Karl against the bars of Sawyer's cage, a ring with an emerald gemstone can be seen on the wedding finger of his left hand.
- He may prefer women of ethnicities other than Caucasian (ie. Black, Asian, Latino).
