The Line is a spot designated in the jungle by Mr. Friendly in The Hunting Party. He warned cryptically that if the castaways were to cross it, they go from misunderstanding to 'something else'.

The Line was visited by Jack and Kate near the end of S.O.S. in an attempt to arrange a prisoner exchange between Walt and Henry Gale. Jack yelled until he lost his voice, and while they waited for his voice to recover, Michael stumbled out of the jungle.

There is a black rock visible at The Line when Jack is calling for "the Others" in the episode S.O.S.. This could have some connection with the "black rock" Claire mentions in her diary and/or the Black Rock ship.

Theories

  • The black rock seen at The Line could also be the final resting place of Magnus Hanso, as mentioned in the blast door map.
  • 'The Line' could be a geomagnetic grid or ley line bisecting the Island, marking it as a 'healing energy spot' similar to Uluru.
  • The "line" Mr. Friendly referred to was arbitrary, and there is no significance to the location.

Questions

  • Where is this line in relation to other places on the island, such as the balloon, The Arrow, etc? Did the journeys to any of these places cause characters to cross it?
    • Comments by Jack in Two for the Road seem to indicate that to go to the part of the Island where the tail-section survivors were would involve crossing the line.
