On the Island[]
"Locke" says that he was hoping Jack would come and invites him to "catch up". Jack tells Hurley it was his idea and asks if it is okay that he goes to talk to Locke, then goes after receiving approval. ♪ The Man in Black sits on a log and Jack squats in front of him saying that he looks just like Locke. Jack says that what bothers him is that he has no idea what the hell the Man in Black is. The Man in Black says he chose Locke's body because John Locke was stupid enough to think he was on the Island for a reason, and he pursued that idea until it got him killed. The Man in Black adds that he needed Locke's dead body to look like him. The Man in Black goads Jack by asking whether he thinks he may have impersonated anyone else in the past. Jack asks whether the Man in Black had ever impersonated his father Christian Shephard. The Man in Black says that he did, simply because the castaways needed to be shown where water was located. The Man in Black adds he was only ever trying to help the plane survivors leave the Island, but Jack had always been trapped because Jacob had chosen him. But since Jacob is now dead he's no longer trapped and could fly away, but that can only happen if it's "all of us." He adds that John Locke was not a believer but a sucker. ♪
On the way back to his camp the Man in Black notices Claire is following them. Jack and Claire greet each other, and the Man in Black leaves them to catch up. Claire says that as she never had much in the way of family it means a lot to her that Jack is coming with them. ♪ Jack says he hasn't decided yet but Claire is clear that Jack decided the moment he let the Man in Black talk to him and whether he likes it or not he is now with the Man in Black ♪♪
At the camp Sawyer says to Hurley they are going to use Charles Widmore's submarine to escape the Island, and as Sayid is with the "dark side" he is not invited. Kate is explaining the plan to Sun nearby. Just as Sawyer tells Hurley to keep the plan secret, Claire interrupts.
The Man in Black addresses his camp saying how nice it is to have everyone back together again. Kate joins Jack who again says he is not sure whether to leave with the Man in Black. Zoe arrives to ask the Man in Black to return what he had taken. The Man in Black says he doesn't know what she is talking about. Zoe uses a two-way radio to confirm they have a fix on her position and asks for them to show the Man in Black what they are capable of. A mortar round flies overhead and explodes nearby. Zoe gives him until nightfall to return what he took and leaves the radio for him to make arrangements. ♪ Zoe leaves and the Man in Black smashes the radio with his completed wooden pole before saying "Here we go."
The Man in Black says to his camp their hands have been forced by the Widmore group who are provoking a confrontation. He tells the camp to gather their things to go to Hydra Island and get on the plane. He gives Sawyer a rough map to get a boat and to bring it to collect them all and take them to Hydra Island. Sawyer asks Kate to come with him. The Man in Black calls Sayid over and takes him aside. Sawyer whispers to Jack that he isn't going to rendezvous with the Man in Black but wants Jack find a way to sneak off with Sun, Hurley and Frank to meet them at an old dock. They will then all go to Hydra Island to meet Widmore, who he has a deal with. When Jack asks about Sayid and Claire, Sawyer explains that "Sayid's a zombie and Claire is nuts" and gave up her ticket when she tried to kill Kate.
The Man in Black tells Sayid to go to the well and kill Desmond. Sayid hesitates prompting the Man in Black to check that he still wants what he asked for. Sayid says that he does and heads to the well. ♪ At the well Desmond is sitting in water at the bottom as Sayid points his gun. Desmond calmly asks what the Man in Black offered Sayid. Sayid says he him he could get the woman he loved back, even though she was dead. Desmond asks why he would believe the Man in Black could help and Sayid says that he was dead, but was brought back. Finally Desmond asks what Sayid will say to his beloved when she asks what he had to do to be with her again. ♪
When Sawyer and Kate arrive at the coast, Kate expresses her doubts about going to get the Man in Black, and Sawyer reveals his plan and that instead they would meet with Jack, Hurley, Sun and Frank. Kate asks about Claire but Sawyer says that the Claire that Kate came for is gone and that she is dangerous. They swim fully clothed to the Elizabeth. ♪
The Man in Black leads his 23 strong troupe toward the rendezvous point. Claire tells Jack that she trusts the Man in Black because he is the only one who didn't abandon her. The Man in Black drops back, concerned that Sayid has not joined them. He asks Sun whether she has seen Sayid, but when she doesn't respond he thinks she is ignoring him. She then writes a note saying that he did this (her inability to talk) to her. The Man in Black stomps off saying he didn't do anything to her. He tells Cindy he is going to find Sayid and runs off. Jack takes the chance and gathers Hurley, Sun and Frank but Claire observes and follows them.
The Man in Black finds Sayid and wonders why he took so long. Sayid tells him he just shot an unarmed man and that he needed a moment. There is tension as the Man in Black asks if he killed Desmond, and Sayid confirms that he did and insists that the Man in Black could go and check if he wishes. Even as the Man in Black leaves Sayid holds back a moment. ♪
Jack's group runs to the coast following the map and arrives at the dock where the Elizabeth is anchored. They join Kate and Sawyer and prepare to leave, but Claire emerges from the jungle with a rifle. Kate bravely talks to her about the fact that they are not going with John because it is not John. She asks Claire to join them and when a confused Claire says that John made her a promise, Kate says that she is making the promise and that the only reason she came back to the Island was to reunite her with Aaron. Claire relents but adds that when he finds out that they have left "he's going to be mad." ♪♪
They make their way to Hydra Island under power. Sawyer tells Frank that the plan is to get in cosy with Widmore and take the submarine to go home. Frank likes the plan and tells everyone he found food inside and everyone but Jack, Sawyer and Kate follows him. Jack and Sawyer have a tête-à-tête. Jack tells him that it doesn't feel right leaving the Island because last time when he left it was like a part of him was missing. He believes that they were brought to the Island to do something, and if that thing wants them to leave he may be afraid of what happens if they stay. Sawyer tells Jack to get off the boat and not talk that "crazy talk." When Jack reaffirms that leaving is a mistake and that the Island is not done with them yet, Sawyer says he is done with the Island and that if Jack wants to take a leap of faith he should take it. Jack says that he was sorry he got Juliet killed and jumps into the water to swim back to the main island. Kate sees him in the water and says they have to go back and get him but Sawyer says that they are done going back. ♪
Sawyer's group arrives at Hydra Island and swims ashore. Widmore's people confront them with guns but lower their arms when Zoe says that she knows Sawyer. As Zoe requests for the fences to be turned off Jin arrives, spots Sun and runs to embrace her. She regains her voice and says aloud that she loves him and Jin promises her that they will never be apart again. ♪ Zoe radios Widmore and then tells Sawyer's group to put their hands up and kneel down. Sawyer asks about his deal but Zoe says the deal is off, she checks that Widmore has a sightline on the Man in Black and orders to fire when ready.
Jack swims back to the Island and arrives on a beach where the Man in Black and seven Others await on shore. The Man in Black makes light of Jack's swim and confirms with him that Sawyer has taken "his" boat. Widmore fires the mortar, its rounds land in their midst and throws Jack and some of the others through the air. The Man in Black runs to Jack who is prone in the sand and carries him inland as another shell hits. He puts Jack down and says to him that he should not worry, because: "You're with me now." ♪

She looks over as their gurneys pass and recognizes Locke. She is frightened and says to Jin in Korean, "It's him, it's him." ♪♪
In the police station, James asks the uniformed officer for a minute with Kate. He checks her file saying she does not strike him as a murderer. She says that is because she is not. James talks to Kate about the coincidence of them being on the same flight and a week later she smashes into his car. She exclaims that he is hitting on her. She asks why he didn't arrest her at LAX. She says that she thinks he didn't arrest her at the airport because he didn't want anyone to know he was in Australia and asks whether she should tell the Feds that. James considers what Kate said and says that he likes her. Miles calls James over about the multiple homicide at a restaurant of Keamy and three of his goons and that there was a witness who doesn't speak English. Miles shows James a surveillance camera record which shows the suspect. Sayid is the suspect seen leaving the scene.
Claire, still pregnant, arrives at a high rise to see the adoption agency on the fifteenth floor. The guard asks her to sign in and as she does, Desmond arrives and re-introduces himself. Claire tells him he was right; a scan has shown that her baby is a boy. Desmond suggests that adoption is a complex legal arrangement and that she should have legal representation. He offers to arrange it with his lawyer whom he is about to see. Claire is hesitant, especially about the expense, but Desmond convinces her to see the lawyer, saying she (the lawyer) owes him a favour. ♪ At the law office, Desmond informs the receptionist that he here to see Miss Verdansky. Sayid arrives at Nadia's and rushes to pack. He tells her he is leaving and will never be able to come back. The doorbell rings and when Miles identifies himself as being an LAPD officer and is let in, Sayid has gone. Sayid runs out the back door where Sawyer trips him and makes the arrest.
Jack and his son David Shephard arrive at the same office tower to hear Christian's will read. David says that he is sad for Jack. ♪ In the attorney's office Ilana Verdansky greets them saying that she has a surprise and asks whether they believe in fate. Claire is there, waiting. At the hospital, Sun awakes. She is worried about the fate of her baby, but Jin tells her she and the baby will be fine. He says that it is over and they will all be okay. ♪ Outside their room, Jack and David walk down the corridor and discuss Christian. David asks if his grandfather's secrecy was passed down to his son, and Jack laughs and says "probably." Jack then had David wait as he goes into surgery. A surgeon tells him of the patient's condition, noting that this man was already in a wheelchair. Jack notices his dural sac has been "obliterated", but thinks he has the situation under control. As he begins the operation, he sees Locke's reflection in the surgery mirror and is taken aback. The surgeon asks Jack what the problem is, and Jack says, "I think I know this guy."
Trivia[]
- Trailers for this episode featured the Pendulum's song "Through the Loop". The song features samples of "The Rowing Song", as performed by Gene Wilder in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. "The Rowing Song" was adapted from "The Rowers", a 1959 poem by Roald Dahl. In the movie, the song is part of the selection process of choosing a candidate to succeed Willy Wonka. The factory tour seems an uncontrolled journey (as this song alludes to), yet it weeds out those who are not worthy, leaving Charlie, who almost falters at the end, yet succeeds through selflessness and doing what is right. (Music) (Movies)
- This is the first time that Jack and Claire have met each other since knowing about being siblings.
- This is the first episode we learn of Ilana's surname, "Verdansky".
- This is the first multi-centric episode that isn't a premiere or finale.
- Technically, The Other 48 Days is first, but that episode did not feature any actual flashes: it was all set in the past.
- This episode is Rated TV-14-LV.
Production notes[]
- Josh Holloway (Sawyer) becomes the fourth cast member to appear in 100 episodes, after Matthew Fox (Jack), Evangeline Lilly (Kate) and Jorge Garcia (Hurley).
- Andrea Gabriel makes her second appearance of the season as Nadia. Although she has appeared in all six seasons, this is the first time she has appeared more than once in the same season.
- This is the first time in the entire series in which Claire leaves the main Island, the only main character introduced in "Pilot, Part 1" to not do so before now.
- The Elizabeth appears for the first time since the Season 3 episode "The Glass Ballerina", an absence of 64 episodes.
- This episode features points of view of the candidates corresponding to the Numbers, excepting Hurley. The previous episode was centered on Hurley, while Claire had not had a centric episode since her return.
- The first flash was John Locke's (#4), the second was James Ford's (#15), the fourth was Sayid Jarrah's (#16), the fifth was Jack Shephard's (#23) and the last was Jin and Sun's (#42).
- This is the first time since Season 3 that Claire has received any flash from her point of view.
- It is also the first time she has ever received one during a multi-centric episode (she was meant to have one in "Exodus", but the scene was deleted and can only be seen on the Season 1 DVD).
- Jin and Sun reunite after three years, having not been seen together outside of flashbacks and flash sideways since the explosion of the freighter in "There's No Place Like Home, Part 3", a separation of 29 episodes.
- Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond) is not credited for his appearance in the episode's ABC press release. This is likely an oversight due to his odd status of being credited in between main cast and guest star.
- Even though she is credited until the series finale, this episode marks the last appearance of Ilana (Zuleikha Robinson) in the series.
Bloopers and continuity errors[]
- The EMT shows ignorance of Locke's paraplegia, yet just seconds later says that his wheelchair is "smashed to pieces". Furthermore, in "Everybody Loves Hugo", the wheelchair is shown intact, standing upright after the accident.
- There appears to be some time date discrepancy between the events depicted in this episode and those in "Sundown" and "The Package". Sun and Jin could not arrive at the ER at the same moment as John Locke, as the events of "The Package" take place just a day or two after the arrival of Oceanic 815, whereas Desmond's attack on Locke took place about a week after, due to Desmond telling Hurley it had been a week since their flight in "Everybody Loves Hugo". Some fans have tried to explain this mistake by saying that Keamy busted Jin and Sun one week after Oceanic 815, but that was not apparently the fact.
- In Ilana's conference room, Jack's necktie reveals his shirt's top button, but in the next shot the necktie is again tight so the button is not visible.
- When the Man in Black smashes the two-way radio with his wooden pole it appears that his shot will miss the radio, before the close-up shows a direct hit.
- Jack's chat with the Man in Black—and later with Claire—takes place at night. They come back from the chat in bright daylight.
- When Sawyer is steering the sailboat, from one angle there is a trailing wave, and in the following angle there is none.
- As Sawyer walks to the front of the boat to talk to Jack, the boat is shown moving quickly through the water. As soon as he begins to talk to Jack the boat is obviously not moving, just bobbing in the water.
- When Sawyer is talking to Jack on the sailboat, his hair changes position between the face and over-the-shoulder shots.
- After Jack is bombed he has blood on his neck, but after the Man in Black carries Jack inland there is almost none left.
- Jack first saw Christian on the fifth day after flight 815 crashed in "Walkabout" and not the third day as he recalled it to the Man in Black.
- When Sayid is talking to Desmond in the well, Desmond has blood around his mouth. It suddenly disappears in the following shots.
