Jacob's House appears to be an old house somewhere in the jungle on the island. It was first introduced in "The Man Behind the Curtain".

Inspecting the mysterious substance trail.

The house exterior appears marred by age and only harbors a lantern for light. Ben, when visiting Jacob, explains that there are no lights because Jacob hates technology. The house is about a day's hike from the temporary camp The Others have set up. It is in the middle of dense jungle, isolated from anyone else. Before entering the house, Ben knocks and makes Jacob aware that he is entering and has brought a guest.

Before approaching the house on his visit, Locke notices there is a line of gray ash or dirt. Locke inspects the substance but is hurried by Ben, taking no notice to it. Not enough of the line has been seen to know if it surrounds the property or not.

Interior

Inside the dimly lit house there are several typical objects that appear old and unused including:

  • An aged rocking chair.
  • Painting supplies.
  • Six jars of colored liquid.
  • A painting of a dog (the painting is actually of Jack Bender's Dog, Lulu).
  • A dirty, old, and empty table.
  • What looks like a wood-burning stove.
  • Several ropes and chains hanging on the wall.

Jars

Ben tells Locke that Jacob is sitting in the empty chair in the middle of the room, to which Locke shows great disbelief. Ben begins to talk to Jacob, which looks as though he is talking to himself. Locke is outraged and raises his voice to Ben. Convinced that Ben is either trying to deceive him or is truly crazy, Locke proceeds to the door, but hears someone utter "help me", Locke turns around and asks Ben to repeat himself. Ben denies he ever spoke and Locke turns the flashlight on and points it at Ben. Suddenly, the room begins to rumble and objects shake violently through the house, the lamp falls to the floor and sets alight, the rocking chair begins to move back and forth seemingly on its own and a window smashes. Ben pleads for Jacob to stop and is thrown against the far wall by an unseen force, at this time Locke looks back to the chair and for a split second, a man, presumably Jacob, can be seen.

  • What is the grey grainy substance surrounding the house and what function does it have?
  • What are the liquids in the jars?
  • Is there any significance to the portrait of the dog (lulu) on the chair?
  • Why did nothing which happened in the house seem to have any consequences later; such as the lantern breaking and setting the floor on fire, yet when Ben left, he was holding the lantern, and there was no smoke or fire coming from inside at all?
