Anyone who speaks french here? What about the rest of the notes on the map - can someone translate it?

French[]

I've just added some stuff i translated from the map. Sorry for my english which is not perfect.

I'm french, and i notice something that may not be a simple spelling error, at the bottom of the map, one can read "Le long des golfes claires", this is misspelled, in french you'd write "Le long des golfes clairs" without "e". Would this have any relation with Claire ? Note that the same phrase is written on the top right of the map whithout this error. --TheFrenchMan 02:11, 26 April 2006 (PDT)

I think it's just an error they done when they recopied the song lyrics, it can happen to everyone ^^ Frak 05:21, 12 May 2007 (PDT)

Sources[]

Where did the image of the map come from? Which episode ?(if any, because I personally don't remember a shot of the map like that) Also, it would be nice if someone could screen cap all of the different pages and different views of the map we see throughout the series.

As a side note, I'm not sure of this, but I seem to recall seeing the words 'le cratere' by an actual crater drawn on Rousseau's map, anybody else see it, or am I imagining things?

Yeah it's not a cap, probably a picture of the actual map they used in the show. --skks 03:29, 23 March 2006 (PST)

Can we trust it? Even if it's directly "from the show", how sure are we that it's not just a drawing that some fan made themselves? Is it from the ABC website or something? ArgentiumOutlaw 01:44, 26 March 2006 (PST)

Yes, it's an actual crater on the map. Whether it's an actual map is uncertain. But it's yet another indication IMHGO that there's a volcanic eruption somewhere in the castaways future (not this season probably but somewhere, maybe at the series finale).--Tricksterson 08:37, 27 April 2006 (PDT)

The crater map appears to be a photograph of the map included in the Shannon Action Figure set. <hiero>O34:O4-G17-D58-A1</hiero> zholmboe 17:47, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Move[]

This page should be moved to "Rousseau's Maps and Notes" (because Rousseau is currently spelled incorrectly). We should do it as soon as possible because there aren't too many articles that link to this article yet.ArgentiumOutlaw 02:28, 26 March 2006 (PST)

Non-canon warning[]

Rousseau's maps and notes are most definitely part of the canon, the pictures on the page might not be. --skks 23:10, 30 March 2006 (PST)

I agree. --Marik7772003 21:06, 30 September 2006 (PDT)

If they are screen shots from the show, why wouldn't they be cannon? ASEO out--ASEO 11:41, 13 October 2006 (PDT)

Here are some non-cannon, but interesting maps. http://www.blackrock.nl/content/view/12/33/ --ASEO 12:29, 16 October 2006 (PDT)

Glass Ballerina[]

Can anyone get a screen cap of the map Sayid was using in the The Glass Ballerina? It looked like it might be one of Rousseau's, but might have been a different one or part of one that hadn't been shown before. --Doc 06:43, 12 October 2006 (PDT)

Removed the following speculation/discussion from the Theories section of the article:

Is the circular formation on the map Sayid is trying to look at the crater that contains Utopiaville?
Why hasn't this map been investigated more throughly? This map is seen again in Season 3 episode 2.
Sayid is marking the sailboat's route on it. Anyone got screen shots of this? It may show where the
statue, fake village and the dock is on the map.

--Doc 06:46, 12 October 2006 (PDT)

Thanks for the screen shot. Are there any more? Anyone better able to read the writing on the map from this episode?--ASEO 11:41, 13 October 2006 (PDT)

I'm not convinced that the map of the island at this link is accurate as far as the locations marked on it though. It really looked to me like Otherville was in the crater. This site seems to take sun location in to account (perhaps forgetting that the show isn't filmed on The Island so the sun's position may reflect Hawaii and not The Island as far as location. Thoughts? Someone check this out and let me know what you think.http://www.blackrock.nl/images/stories/moremaps/islandmap_by_brainsgonebad3.jpg--ASEO 12:25, 13 October 2006 (PDT)

Rename for capitalization[]

  • Whether genuine or not, this topic is not a proper noun. Article should be renamed to: Rousseau's maps and notes. -- Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯  Talk 12:07, 13 October 2006 (PDT)

Huh??[]

  • A thought came in to mind as Sayids looks at the maps. Didn't Danielle say she has seen any of the Others, but she appears to have made a map of the entire island without mentioning Otherville... weird!!!

Crater on the north end of the island?[]

  • What is the evidence for this?--ASEO 11:15, 10 November 2006 (PST)

No sense / Why disputed[]

The non- canon warning makes no sense anymore, because the only picture shown is a screenshot.

I realise there is a full-pic of Rousseau's sideview of the island. I've seen it, and that is obviously the disputed one. But I can't find where it originally came from. So my questions:

  1. where dit that card originate?
  2. why is it disputed canon?

You're right, the non-canonicity warning certainly doesn't apply to the article or to the maps from the show. As for the sideview map, that particular map is from the show and appears at least in the episodes 1x09, 1x12, 1x13 and 1x14, although details of the map are not all clearly visible at the same time. Some screen captures are available there: [1]. An enlargement of the same map, with all the details visible, was provided on the ABC website (Oceanic-air). -- Cheers 16:16, 3 March 2007 (PST)

Map with Shannon figure?[]

Should I add a trivia section explaining the map is included with the figure?--Baker1000 04:36, 25 April 2007 (PDT)

Shannon?[]

Ok, why is Shannon the one who's pod is on this page? Shouldn't it be Danielle, or Sayid? --Apollo Candy 08:12, 4 July 2007 (PDT)

Section for contents?[]

Now that the article has been rewritten to focus on the context within the story lines, it would be cool to get a section in the article detailing the contents of the map. You know, noting the visible notations, equations, etc., much like many of the other articles on maps and such. There seems to be quite a good deal of info on the theories page. There must be some good scans out there somewhere, too. Anybody want to do this? -- Graft   talk   contributions  05:05, 24 October 2007 (PDT)

Rousseau's Map Transcription and Translation Table[]

I put a table onto the page that summarizes the notations on Rousseau's full map. It took me weeks to get the best images I could, and to figure out the translations (I speak french, but I'm certainly not fluent). Anyway, while, obviously anyone can modify the table, if you get a better image and need it translated, I'd be happy to do the translation. <hiero>O34:O4-G17-D58-A1</hiero> zholmboe 19:17, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

It looks great! Keep up the good work. --LOST-The Cartographer 22:19, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

As best as I can tell the writing on the map is as I show in the first image. If those transcriptions are correct then some of the translations would be different than they are currently posted (see second image). I know that a lot of tough work went in to the current version, but felt confident enough in these differences that I wanted to put them up for everyone's consideration. £乚ב○艹Ю Zholmboe Talk 04:15, September 5, 2009 (UTC)

So, since no one seems to disagree, I am going to make the change on the main page. Obviously, people pay more attention when changes are made, so I understand if it inspires discussion that no one, heretofore, felt was necessary. And will happily engage in a discussion/dialog. £乚ב○艹Ю Zholmboe Talk 01:12, October 23, 2009 (UTC)

North[]

Anybody else notice that on the bottom left hand corner, there's a circle with a line facing northeast with what appears to be "Var 9º59' E", with two question marks next to it? Underneath it you can clearly tell that the line was originally facing up, then erased. It seems to indicate that North on the Island is changing, which is why nobody could get a bearing off the Island. The writing seems to indicate that it's changed since the last measurement by nine degrees and 59 minutes. It's late in the show to notice this, but I thought it noteworthy. I'll add it to the Trivia section in a few days if nobody else knows what it's there for. Uzerzero 08:16, May 16, 2010 (UTC)
