This should no longer redirect to Jacob. We've now seen four Protectors: Mother, Jacob, Jack, and Hugo. Should we go ahead and created a page?

Things to do[]

Nice idea for an article, but it should obviously be longer. We should add a little summary of each protector, maybe based on their time (Jacob served more than 2000 years, Jack 1 day, Hurley and Mother unknown)

We should add as well how they become protectors, the "ritual" required (drinking water, and in some cases chanting in Latin). The abilities they acquire, agelessness, heal, apparently...Logan mac 02:43, May 29, 2010 (UTC)

To the 'Powers' section, could we add something like 'Teleportation' or 'Ability to leave the Island'. Because Jacob must have a means to leave and return to the Island at will, hence his appearance at Jack's hospital/Cooper's apartment building. I know calling it teleportation is more of a Theory than a fact but he does seem to have this ability in some form. Andrew1990M 19:37, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Walt[]

After the epilogue, it was pretty clear that Walt was going to be the new protector of the island, so should we add him to the list? Julietfan2626 Talk Blogs

Having watched the epilogue a few times it never seemed to me that Walt was going to be the new protector, just that he had a "job". There was nothing to suggest that it was specifically the role of protector. In any case Hurley would only be three years in the job, seems a bit early on. Interesting theory though. MR IRISH 20:21, September 21, 2010 (UTC)

  • It doesn't necessarily mean that Walt will immediately become protector. Possibly Hurley and Ben decided to groom him for the "job", show him the errors of the past protectors, etc. first and then when Hurley was an old man or ready to die he passed on his responsibilities to Walt who became the island's true protector more akin to mother. --Mrnotwen (talk) 00:29, October 5, 2012 (UTC)

I think it was clear by saying 'job' he was obviously talking about being protector... They strongly implied he would be protector by the way he said it. Julietfan2626 Talk Blogs

I think so too, but the last time a protector offered a "job", it wasn't to a successor. It was when Jacob hired Richard. --- Balk Of Fametalk 20:57, September 21, 2010 (UTC)
That's actually not true. In "What They Died For," Jacob referred to the Protector as a "job" when talking to the remaining candidates. Bhbogue 10:27, October 4, 2010 (UTC)

But Hurley had a number two D: Ben! Poor Ben wouldn't replaced for a child D: Julietfan2626 Talk Blogs

  • To me it actually seemed like there was a plan that Hurley had to free the whispers, based on what Ben said about Michael to Walt. --Crash815 Talk 21:05, September 21, 2010 (UTC)
    • Right, that foremost. But if Hurley was offering Walt an additional job, it could be Protector or Number 2. --- Balk Of Fametalk 22:08, September 21, 2010 (UTC)
      • I disagree. Hurley's offer to Walt was presented as a revelation, as the final twist of the show. If it was about the whispers, then it wouldn't have been a revelation at all because Hurley would just be reiterating what Ben told Walt. If you think about it from the viewpoint of the writers, I think it's clear that they intended for Walt to become the new Protector. Bhbogue 10:25, October 4, 2010 (UTC)
        • It makes a lot of sense, but it's still not clear enough to be stated as fact on the wiki. --Celebok 08:15, October 5, 2010 (UTC)

"Second in Charge" is misleading[]

This article implies that Ben and Richard fulfilled similar roles in helping the Protector, or even the exact same role. That's not true. Richard was an intermediary between Jacob and the people he drew for his conflict with MIB. He knew nothing about Jacob's role as Protector, or of the candidates. Ben, however, was an adviser to Hurley, offering experience to help him lead and protect the island. These roles were completely different. Ben sort of did end up becoming "the new Richard", but he played Richard to Hurley's Ben, not Hurley's Jacob. --- Balk Of Fametalk 08:40, January 15, 2011 (UTC)
