New to Lostpedia?

Let me just say that the "New to Lostpedia?" heading is misleading. When I visited www.lostpedia.com, that thing immediately caught my attention, because I thought it meant "New to Lostpedia? Start here!" and that it would point me to some sort of root of a hierarchy of pages, kind of like Template:Nav-Storyline. It indeed links to a portal, but a rather unrelated one; the Lostpedia:Community_Portal. Moreover, the items listed in the "New to Lostpedia?" section are more of... Lostpedia's News (new skin, new youtube tag, new BBCode forums feature, etc.), and are of little or no interest to somebody who is "New to Lostpedia"!.

Personally, I find the Media Appearances box way more useful! Ever though of swapping it with the "New to Lostpedia?" one?  —Thinker   03:35, 26 February 2007 (PST)

  • Thanks for your thoughts. Do you have any specific suggesstions for content that might be more useful to new users? -- Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯  Talk  15:58, 26 February 2007 (PST)
    • How about a link to the general guidlines and the Job List?--J-- 16:52, 26 February 2007 (PST)
    • For new users I would suggest pointing them to "An introduction to LOST" (maybe Lost after the article attack?) and then from there to a more detailed index/portal page, something that combines Template:Index, Template:Nav-Storyline etc. possibly with images.  —Thinker   18:58, 26 February 2007 (PST)
  • The thing is, new users to Lostpedia are not necessarily new to LOST. An introduction to the site is not really the same as an introduction to the show, and many new editors are old veterans to the show (and for those new to LOST, we do have several of the portals to help navigate the site at the top banner: Main characters, Others, Locations, etc. to help them explore) I guess maybe we could link the article LOST somewhere in the center? I just don't know where. PS: The community portal already links to guidelines and job list. --PandoraX 07:18, 2 March 2007 (PST)
  • Right. However "New to Lostpedia" still refers to "News of Lostpedia" (plus or minus a couple of sentences :)  —Thinker   09:53, 2 March 2007 (PST)
  • However, that is only a part of it. It redirects all the new users to the community portal primarily, and informs users what changes have been made as a secondary concern.  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  04:24, 5 March 2007 (PST)

Enter 77

Why is Enter 77 listed as airing in Ireland before the US?Alib999 02:20, 27 February 2007 (PST)

Lostpedia in the Media

Might not be main-pagey, but no idea where else to put it. I've noticed Lostpedia getting more and more recognition in the media as of late (especially in the last week). This month's issue of Rolling Stone has an article devoted to show-specific wikis, and Lostpedia is mentioned, and I caught a reference to the site in a review for the film "The Number 23" in last Friday's New York Times. I don't mean for the site to become all self-congratulatory, but is there a way we can document/make a page for these such things? CastorTroy 09:34, 3 March 2007 (PST)

  • We mentioned the Rolling Stones article in the Lostpedia Blog. This is a great achievement for us. Oh, and we were mentioned in the New York Times? Awesome. I'll check it out. --Marik7772003 09:39, 3 March 2007 (PST)

Transcripts

I've just noticed the transcripts for episodes are major pages (ie: I Do transcript) shouldn't they be a subpage like the theories are... ie I Do/transcript?  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  07:36, 7 March 2007 (PST)

  • That makes sense... and would make it so we could automate the infobox links... -Chris[dt7] 12:30, 7 March 2007 (PST)
  • I agree. Princess Dharma (banned)
  • It wouldn't matter which way to me... if we are to do it, I'll help. --Marik7772003 16:48, 7 March 2007 (PST)
  • I disagree. The theory pages are on a subpage in order to have a standard delimiter for the extension to work with a little logic. If anything they should be in a separate namespace called Transcript: which Admin would need to define in the wiki's localsettings.php file.    Jabberwock    talk    contribs    email   - 17:12, 7 March 2007 (PST)
  • But that makes no logical sense. A subpage is designed to be a subsection for a major topic, so if the topic is I Do, a sub topic would be its transcript, much like its theories. Like creating folders within folders.  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  08:15, 8 March 2007 (PST)
  • If I were a new or unfamiliar user I'd be more likely to look on the episodes page for a transcript than on a seperate page. Princess Dharma (banned)
  • Well, unfortunately I named about 50 of them this way (and sorry if this caused anyone inconvenience). As I said to plk's comment on the transcripts page, I wouldn't mind either way, but unfortunately I won't be around to help you guys move it after today... so if you do want to move them, please just be aware that this will be quite a job... over 130 pages is my estimate, including fixing a number of redirects. I do think his reasoning could make sense, though. One pro would be that you could quickly navigate back to the main episode synopsis, but Paul, keep in mind that all the links are also at the tops of the individual transcripts, also (all the templates have the link to the episode synopsis page and the writers and directors at the top; see I Do transcript for an example). I'm not sure if they could be given their own namespace and think this is a great idea also. Sorry I can't help more! --PandoraX 14:44, 8 March 2007 (PST)

Mysterious Happenings

For this link, would a title such as mysterious occurrences be more appropriate, happenings sounds clumsy and informal. Ryan stowers 13:46, 7 March 2007 (PST)

Improvement Article?

I was inspired by [[1]] to suggest that we have an Improvement Article of the Week. One semi-weak article would be posted every week so that users could steadily improve it and fix the grammar and such. User:pom5msu 15:54, 8 March 2007 (CST)

We already have this, see Article Attack. --Mr. Crabby (Talk) 13:56, 8 March 2007 (PST)

Ok, didn't know that was there. Wouldn't it make sense to have it on the main page where it is easier to see? [--pom5msu] [--talk] 15:02 9 March 2007

The main page is primarily for veiwers nt editers so no. Princess Dharma (banned)

OK, sorry then. Just thought it was a good idea. It might entice people to join if they know they can improve an article they know something about. [--pom5msu] [--talk] 13:31, 9 March 2007

An article doesn't have to be under article attack for it to be improved. You just don't get a reward for regular improvement is all. Only you shouldn't edit solely for a medal in the first place. Princess Dharma (banned)

We agree on that. It wasn't for my purpose or the purpose of an award or anything. I just want this site to be the best and most thorough database of LOST information that it can be. User:pom5msu

Thanks for your enthusiasm pom5msu :) hope to see you around more!! --Lewis-Talk-Contribs 13:52, 9 March 2007 (PST)

  • Hi pom5msu, thanks for your interest. We do have it listed in the Community Portal, and even have a small blurb on the Community portal in a block on the main page near the bottom right ("New to Lostpedia"). I suppose nothing is stopping us from directly listing a particular task from the Community Portal directly on the main page, but that would be a fundamental shift to put 'meta content' out front. -- Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯  Talk  21:24, 9 March 2007 (PST)

New Zealand

Hi Please put 'Not in Portland' for Wednesday (14th) on main page, as The Survivor Guide aired last night (Fri Lostpedia time). See revised airdates.Thanx Kivipat09:12, 10 March 2007 (PST)

Front Page Lost

Would it be possible where it says: "Currently 2,805 articles dedicated to ABC's hit TV show Lost" Could the lost be linked to Lost rather than the abc website after a successful Article Attack? DrGiggles 12:59, 14 March 2007 (PDT)

I can do that.-Mr.Leaf 18:11, 14 March 2007 (PDT)

Tomorrow is TODAY!!! :)

The main page still has the next airing (US) happening tomorrow, but tomorrow is today. Lost is on tonight! Hooray! Alright, I'm calm now, but could somebody use their sysop powers to change that protected little page? Thanks! -BearDog 17:50, 14 March 2007 (PDT)

Beardog, are you sure, mine says it's Tonight, could you possibly have your time set to something other than your correct timezone, check your preferences, and see what time zone you have it set to. If not, let me know, it'll see what I can do.-Mr.Leaf 18:11, 14 March 2007 (PDT)
No, it seems to know the correct date. But, timezones did just get really stupid around here with moving Daylight Savings Time, so it could just be a Windows glitch that'll sort itself out in a few weeks. Today it says the next airing is next Wednesday, so that's right. I don't know if it runs on the same sub-routine or not, but I didn't see the "Dear Canadians, please don't ruin the suprise for the Americans" site message either. It's probably not a massive problem, and I'm relieved to hear it didn't affect everybody else too. Just weird. -BearDog 09:06, 15 March 2007 (PDT)
Yes, there is definitely something wrong with the wiki software regarding DST, i'll look into it and talk to admin.-Mr.Leaf 09:11, 15 March 2007 (PDT)
  • FYI I had a similar glitch on my WinXP machine and I'm in a time zone that does not observe DST. Actually my originating country also showed up wrong, as some other websites I visited during that time automatically came up in foreign languages. Both this problem and the wiki day discrepancy spontaneously cleared up at the same time. Haven't pinned it down, but I wanted to drop a note to corroborate Beardog. -- Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯  Talk  12:43, 15 March 2007 (PDT)

Themes

In the index at the bottom of the page there is the topic of 'themes' and then under it comes 'recurring themes';which in itself is quite odd. Also, it sends you to the same page! Needs editing, please Ryan stowers 12:12, 20 March 2007 (PDT)

Transcripts, Again!

Hey, I hadn't noticed until just now, but it seems that several of this season's episodes are missing transcripts. I've got a Tivo in my dorm room and some spare time, so unless we'd like to wait for the DVD's or for Spooky transcripts, I could take a stab at the next few episodes. Thoughts? --CastorTroy 08:34, 23 March 2007 (PDT)

Index: Rename "Flashback Characters"?

I think that that section should be renamed "Major Flashback Characters", or something similar, as it's clearly not the complete list. Anyone agree? Disagree? --Invertebrat 14:00, 27 March 2007 (PDT)

Update Main Page

Can someone update the main page please? "Exposé" airs TONIGHT, not tomorrow. Thanks. David 13:34, 28 March 2007 (PDT)

April 1 warning

Can someone put up a site wide banner (like the one currently up for the Hugo cup and Lostbook) reminding our contributers that any Lost "news" circulating today is likely to be an April Fools joke? (Although an article listing such jokes could be interesting...) --Jackdavinci 21:11, 31 March 2007 (PDT)

You guys nearly gave me a heart attack with your current headline about Matt Fox wanting to "quit". dposse 13:24, 1 April 2007 (PDT)
Uncool. It should still read "Matt Fox Quitting." Putting "smoking" in the headline ruins the gag. Have you people no festive spirit? =P --- ZachsMind 09:24, 2 April 2007 (PDT)

NZ Done

New Zealand has finished with Tricia Tanaka Is Dead. Can you please change it to Enter 77 on the main page? Project X 02:42, 4 April 2007 (PDT)

It is set to automatically change when the day changes (ie 4th to 5th). The episode is supposed to air on April 4th, if this is incorrect please let me know. Currently in the U.S. where the servers are, it is April 4th. I believe the problem comes from the time difference. While it may be April 5th in NZ at the moment and the episode has aired, it is still April 4th in the U.S. I'll look into fixing this, or see if we can. I have manually changed the template for those in NZ, and I 'll see what else I can do. Could you please just confirm that the current template is correct?-Mr.Leaf 09:38, 4 April 2007 (PDT)

Index

In the index it shows Edmund Burke in the Others category. Surely this should be removed?--Phil 15:45, 4 April 2007 (PDT)

Recurring Themes Template Addition

I didn't know where else to put this proposal, so figured I'd put it here. I made a little template addition in my sandbox ages ago, but its not til recently I remembered about it and got some positive feedback. I was wondering whether I should add it to the current template, making it into an L shape like with Theorytabtop. Here's a comparison link: User:Nickb123/sandbox. As you can see, it makes a little bit of difference actually showing little pics, brightening up a section of ep articles where there's hardly ever any images. The box of pics is still a little proto-typey, but you get the general jist.

I don't intend to add it if its not wanted obviously, so wanted a bit of extra feedback and redesign ideas. Cheers, --Nickb123 (Talk) 11:10, 8 April 2007 (PDT)

I don't get a) what it is

and b) what you'd use it for -- Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  11:18, 8 April 2007 (PDT)

a)Its just showing minor thumbs of some of the iconic recurring themes. I could make the images link to that themes article too.
b) Use it to grab attention and make visitors look at some of the themes pages. Intention is to add it to this template.--Nickb123 (Talk) 11:24, 8 April 2007 (PDT)
