Arzt's Name[]

Hurley did probably know Arzt's first name from the manifest, but why did Hurley ask him about his name in the first place? (Or did he ask? I don't remember what happened :-S) --Jambalaya 18:35, 20 February 2006 (PST)

I was just watching this episode ("Exodus 1") again today, it was cute bit of comedic relief. Here is their exchange, which I grabbed from a transcript [1]:

HURLEY: Let me ask you something, Arnzt --

LESLIE ARZT/AOIFE LOFTUS: Arzt.

HURLEY: Arnzt.

LESLIE ARZT: No, not Arnzt. Arzt. A-R-Z-T. Arzt.

HURLEY: Sorry, man. Your name's hard to pronounce.

LESLIE ARZT: Oh, yeah? Well, I know a bunch of ninth graders who pronounce it
just fine.

HURLEY: How about I just call you by your first name?

LESLIE ARZT: How about you don't?

HURLEY: Why not? I remember it from the plane's manifest. I think Leslie's a
bitchin' name.

LESLIE ARZT: Arnzt is fine.

Pictures[]

Hey, I'm all over seeing a guy blown to bits by dynamite. So, cool. Thanks for uploading, but what are the pictures in reference to? Why are they under "Theories"? --Carl

Maybe someone forgot to make a new heading for them? I missed half of season 1 and asked a friend what happened to Arzt, because I read a description of "turned into pink dust." She told me, "It was pink dust all right...actually it was more like wet dust." Me: "EWWW!" --Amberjet11 11:41, 19 May 2006 (PDT)
Nice work to the person who uploaded each frame of Arzt's death. Very humourous. --SilvaStorm

Artz's real role on LOST[]

When I saw Artz in the final episode of season 1 I thought he was more of a joke by the writers on the audience. All his complaints are things that people watching kind of question and laugh about. Like, why do all the interesting things happen to the main 7 or 8 people? What are the other people doing? And what do they eat? Why is it that Hugo never get's skinnier? etc... So instead of answering these questions they blow Artz up.

It reminds me of an X-files episode where a young and very interesed agent works with Fox and Skully. She knows all their cases backwards and forward and constnatly mentions previous cases (episodes) and how they might relate to the current one. At the end she was wounded (not fatally) and in the hospital. Fox and Skully were visiting her, and she started asking them how they were able to escape from Antartica if their snow-mobiles were destroyed. And in the same way the writers just didn't answer the question; instead, Fox and Skully shake their heads in a laughing dismisive (sp) manner and walk away. I don't Artz is some sort of link in a chain of support to this or that hypothesis.--Mfraker 12:52, 13 October 2006 (PDT)

Artz action figure backstory[]

From a link at The Tail Section spoiler site, there is the backstory given on the back of an Arzt action figure. There's a closeup of the back of the box here, and apparently it was written by the writers. Just something to look into. Jeremiahsmith 18:51, 10 January 2007 (PST)

  • Thank you for the link, Jeremiah, I think we can consider that semi-canon info on Arzt. I transcribed it and added it to the main page. As Mfraker pointed out, Arzt is definitely an inside joke with the writers, I think, to point out ironies (he complains to Hurley about his redshirt status, and why he isn't included). Also, he's a part of the NJ educational system, apparently, which Damon Lindelof is a product; it's an inside joke on the podcasts how average this is. --PandoraX 19:55, 10 January 2007 (PST)
    • According to a recent interview at TheTailSection with Daniel Roebuck himself, the stuff on the Arzt figure is indeed from the authors. Javier Grillo-Marxauch, to be precise. I think this as good a confirmation of canonicity as any.
      • If it's canon, then why isn't it included in the Before the Crash section? Why only mention it at the bottom? It may not come directly from the show but if it's canon, then I don't see why it's not included? --Bohrok Awakener 09:08, 8 June 2007 (PDT)
        • There's a slight inconsistency with the Missing Pieces episode Arzt & Crafts, where he says he visited Sydney to see a woman he met on the internet, whereas the action figure text says he was on vacation. They aren't totally incompatible, but it seems the MP writer was unaware of the action figure. Merick 15:58, 14 March 2008 (PDT)
  • I find that backstory pretty offensive in its depiction of public sector employees, particularly given the number of children which must have been exposed to this propaganda. Do the rest of the writers share Grillo-Marxuach's right-wing views? Would be kind of hypocritical if they did, in the wake of the strike...DublinDilettante 18:12, 4 May 2008 (PDT)
    • Not to start a discussion on this--such would be wholly against the spirit of the talk page, which is for improvement of the article--but I'll just point out that one fictional public-sector employee is no more representative of all public-sector employees at large than is a single real public-sector employee. Artz action figure backstory part II[]

Interesting that in the Flash-sideways timeline Arzt works in Los Angeles rather than New Jersey, as stated on the action figure.--Pittsburghmuggle 21:21, March 16, 2010 (UTC)

It's Flash-Sideways, lots of things are changed. Rzolee8 16:21, March 18, 2010 (UTC)Rzolee8Rzolee8 16:21, March 18, 2010 (UTC)

Trivia section[]

In the trivia section it states that Arzt had got few scientific predictions wrong i.e. the dynamites, the spider and the monsoons. Well he admitted to lying about the monsoons in "Tropical Depression", and while mishandling the dynamite, and don't remember him mis-predicting anything about it, the same going for the spider, he correctly predicted that it's poisonous and that if released, the Medusa female spider would attract a swarm of males. --Orhan94 18:15, August 1, 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I would say that's incorrect. We should take out the part about him getting predictions wrong, and just leave it at "he correctly guessed the Black Rock was thrown inland by a wave".--Baker1000 (talk) 23:42, August 1, 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, take that out. Arzt was actually one of the most accurate characters... --- Balk Of Fametalk 01:51, August 2, 2012 (UTC)
