In a Brazilian Newspaper, Rodrigo said that *maybe* his character will be of brazilian origin, but maybe not, but he will be a fluent english-speaker. He will only appear in the 2nd part of the 3rd season. Also, he will definately not be a character from kate´s flashbacks. According to him, "I will be a survivor from the plane crash, that has been on the island all the time. It will be a character with a story." Source: Folha Online - xechelonx, 28 August 2006

  • Without confirmation, shouldn't "Karl is a character to appear in Kate's flashbacks. He is described as a handsome 23-year old, and may be any ethnicity." be under theories, or at least rumors? Minderbinder 09:15, 15 September 2006 (PDT)

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't things that have not aired yet be noted as spoilers? Mentioning that Karl will be seen in future Kate flashbacks sounds like a spoiler to me.

Good point. It's also possible that it's totally wrong, previously this page said that Rodrigo was playing Karl. I'm taking it out, even if it turns out to be true it would be a rumor/spoiler and not a theory. --Minderbinder 09:14, 5 October 2006 (PDT)

When people refer to the 'rash' on Karl's face.. I assume its from when he is apologising to Sawyer.. it looks like sand or grit to me. Unless I've missed something -- MRNasher

Neon yellow rash? If it's that neon, could you find a screencap that shows it? --Minderbinder 11:40, 10 October 2006 (PDT)

At the moment I think its safe to assume that the 3 characters are being examined by the Others and that if they want honest information out of them they will use friendship to win it.

So far Sawyers is the most obvious with Karl. Karl could have been using Sawyer to help in his break as the Others would have 2 people to chase instead of one. If he is genuine he had no reason to trust Sawyer wasn't a plant himself.

Juliet's rather shakey one with Jack.. but he's probably the tuffest one to break and she's shown him kindness and a lot of trust with the feeding process. She is certainly cold and hard when shes not dealing with John in his tank.

Kate seems to have Henry at the mo.. but i dont see her trusting him for a while.. but we don't know what happened when 'they scratched her up' as Nice Friendly put it. -- MRNasher

Theories / Spoilers

A character named Karl was said to appear in Kate's flashbacks. He is described as a handsome 23-year old. Perhaps this is the same Karl.

Are theories allowed to have spoilers? This site has been riddled with them since the start of (and shortly before) season three. I personally would rather not know that someone read in a magazine that a character named Karl may or may not be in Kate's flashbacks. It only makes sense to me that "theories" list any educated guesses based on things already shown on the television show / TLE, but not a "theory" based on something you already know will happen. I'd make the edit and remove such "theories" but I don't know if I am being overly critical or not. Snarf 05:39, 9 October 2006 (PDT)

I was at An Evening With LOST, and beforehand they showed upcoming clips from season three. One was Ben telling Alex that Karl was being put in a cage "until he learns to follow orders." Jimbot87 13:03, 14 January 2007 (PST)

Last Name

How do we know his last name? Source please. --KeriCanFly 07:08, 9 October 2006 (PDT)

I'll second this...where did that last name come from? --Minderbinder 14:47, 9 October 2006 (PDT)
It's from the memorial video at comic-con 2009. Nick2010 00:06, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Why With A K

Why is it Karl and not Carl how do we know this?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bassdude (talkcontribs) .

The ABC press release says Karl (no last name though). --Minderbinder 14:47, 9 October 2006 (PDT)

Karl Burgess

"Karl has been on the plane (full name: Karl Burgess)".. Do you have any proof? And if I'm not wrong, isn't Randy's last name is Burgess?  ODK Talk   Sandbox 14:48, 9 October 2006 (PDT)

  • Yeah, he asked Sawyer if the people on his plane and from his camp were nice, implying he wasn't on the plane. --Fezir 15:22, 9 October 2006 (PDT)
I deleted that part about Karl being on the plane, that is speculation, and I think it is speculation based on another Carl (with a C) who might have been mentioned on in one of the letters. Not this Karl with a K. --PandoraX 15:29, 9 October 2006 (PDT)

In case anyone asks...

...he is an Other, according to the latest offical podcast. -Chris[dt7] 11:22, 12 October 2006 (PDT)

  • So should the speculative remarks on him being a Tailie, etc be removed? I don't know protocol yet but it makes sense...--Brother 10:39, 15 October 2006 (PDT)
It should...I'll get to it. -Chris[dt7] 10:47, 15 October 2006 (PDT) he doesn't WANT to be an Other, but is forced into being one, Alex style. So, I suppose those theories are still valid. -Chris[dt7] 10:48, 15 October 2006 (PDT)

Karl = Zack?

I don't see how someone could come up with this, considering Zack is a child and Karl is much older.

-- Beeth 13:52, 15 October 2006 (PDT)

The life extension project of Hanso - it might be the opposite and Zach became prematurely old or something? It's a valid theory, in my mind anyway - even if he isn't Zach, he MIGHT be one of the kids. --Andyroo316 14:38, 15 October 2006 (PDT)

  • Zach is the only other kid aside from his sister. And this guy's name is "Karl", why would they change his name, considering that isn't exactly their style? --Sauron18 14:55, 15 October 2006 (PDT)
True, but my point is, considering that life extension is a Dharma thing, it is a possible explanation for Karl. Although, I personally believe that he is someone from off the island that crashed in search of Kate (considering a 'Karl' was meant to be in her flashbacks).
I wouldn't base ANY theories on rumors. There have been way too many that turned out to be completely wrong. After all, for a while this page said Rodrigo would be playing Karl. Stick to what's in the show, the producers may have just been messing with you. --Minderbinder 05:46, 16 October 2006 (PDT)
Life extension program deals with prolonging life, not speeding up human growth.
-- Beeth 05:53, 16 October 2006 (PDT)

I put that Rodrigo was going to play Karl, but that was only in the theories section before the season started, and it was a valid theory at the time. I know now that he won't play Karl and it isn't on the page anymore, simple. However, the idea that Karl is in Kate's flashbacks was an actual spoiler from the producers (I know that a lot were disregarded as foilers, but they might have been covering their tracks), and as of yet, the theory that the Karl on the island could also appear in Kate's flashbacks is still valid. And now onto part 2 - who says that the life extension scheme went right? Maybe it went totally wrong and instead of prolonging prematurely aged people? That would explain why Karl is far older than he looks, if he IS Zach, that is (which I personally doubt as I believe his background is in Kate's life, but I wouldn't totally discredit it). --Andyroo316 17:39, 17 October 2006 (PDT)

I suppose this is based on how he talks kind of like a kid and he's wearing the same shirt, but if the others emphasized that the children were safe, why would they beat him and keep him in a cage? I figure he keeps his words few because he knows the cages are being filmed.--Moo 09:03, 2 November 2006 (PST)

Why the Crap is every male character suspected to be Radzinsky. There is no rationale to believe that. Can we take stuff like that off of Theories unless there actually might be a reason to believe it?

I have moved all the guff that is really really NOT theory (as opposed to most of the stuff i left which just isnt theory) here! please guys read the Theory Policy page before writing rubbish!

  • He is a relative of Alvar Hanso, and the Others are holding him there, like they were doing with Alvar Hanso in the real world.
  • Was an Other, but upon learning about the way the Others treat the survivors, left to tell the survivors all about them. Was captured by the Others and put in the cage.
  • Was a plant and his escape attempt and apparent sympathy were ruses to gain Sawyer's trust.
  • The rash on his face is the virus that multiple characters have been given shots for throughout the show. (Desmond, Claire, Aaron, Jack, Sawyer, Kate)
  • It may be a possiblity that Karl was taken in the first days after the crash. After arriving somewhere with the Others, he met Alex Rousseau and they formed a friendship, maybe more.
  • He is actually Zack, one of the children taken from the Season 2 episode The Other 48 Days, and has since had experiments in growth carried out on him.
    • Zack and Karl are both wearing the same color ringer tee, and Zack's looks large enough to be an adult size that would fit Karl's slim frame. [1]
  • He also could be a part of the same crew the real Henry Gale was a part of.

Should we put "presumed dead" under "status", given what Alex said in I Do? Bellemichelle 09:48, 10 November 2006 (PST)

  • I believe she asks what they did with him first, then makes an assumption that they killed him. I personally don't think they'd kill off such a talked about mystery-character just yet.--MightyRearranger 09:59, 10 November 2006 (PST)

Good point. I assumed he was the "secondary character" killed off in that episode, but we have no idea. Bellemichelle 11:01, 10 November 2006 (PST)

The description for the episode "Stranger in a Strange Land" includes a description of Kate, Sawyer, and Karl escaping the smaller island. So, not only is he still alive, but he plays a more important role later on in the season. Alex's confusion could be due in part to them telling her, wrongly, that he was dead in order to get her to stop her rebellious/disruptive acts. --Thecolorpie 23:35, 4 February 2007 (PST)

in the lost podcast, damon lindelof says that we will see more of Karl —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Missbronte (talkcontribs) .

That doesn't mean he is still alive. I wish he was -- he was the most interesting character on the island -- but it seems unlikely. He'll probably show up in others' flashbacks.

One of Us appearance?

In One of Us, when Juliet goes to deliver the news to Ben that he has a tumor, there's a boy who says hi to Juliet and this looks like Karl to me. (Different hair, yes, but it seems to be him!) This is around 26:54 in my episode rip. --TPIMaster 12:53, 1 May 2007 (PDT)

Flashback Episode

Technically, "Greatest Hits" did contain a Karl flashback so therefore, it is a Karl flashback episode. This does not mean that it is a Karl-Centric episode though, it is still a Charlie-Centric episode. This is why in the info box I put next to "Flashbacks" "Greatest Hits". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Browndog (talkcontribs) .

Karl's death?

According to DarkUFO (info from spoiler site removed, please don't post this stuff, even on talk pages). I think we can say with confidence he's dead. --The Cartographer 19:20, 20 March 2008 (PDT)

Until we get official confirmation, it should stay as unknown Fralfman 19:22, 20 March 2008 (PDT)

Agree 100% with Fralfman. It is not confirmed, and this being a site promoting useful, verified information, it's irresponsible for us to claim him as dead. I've changed it BACK to "Last ep: N/A" and "Status: Unknown." I'm not saying he's alive, but WE DO NOT KNOW. Please refrain from turning this into a wiki-war.--Overworkedirish 20:26, 20 March 2008 (PDT)

SIGHHHHHH - I wish people would stop changing this. Can we please all recall what happened the last time someone was left for dead from a gunshot wound? That's right, John Locke. So let's just keep our assertiveness to a minimum.--Overworkedirish 21:41, 20 March 2008 (PDT)

Yeah, but Locke got shot were his kidney should have been, but it was not there because he donated his kidney. Karl got shot in the lung... Marko 11:54, 22 March 2008 (PDT)

Apologies for my part in this. I've been editing here for a while now and usually think to check talk pages and things like that, but for some reason it slipped my mind with Karl. Anyway, I added a note on the edit page telling people not to change his status until it's fully confirmed. Hopefully this minimizes future problems with this. --Compossible 22:24, 20 March 2008 (PDT)

I removed the specific info above, please don't post things like that from spoiler sites. "A spoiler site said so" doesn't settle questions about the show. --Minderbinder 09:19, 21 March 2008 (PDT)

So well, DarkUFO was right ... I am really sad about that, he was one of my favourite "not-so-much-important" guys on LOST... Karl is my hero! --Running 19:09, 21 March 2008 (PDT)

It was confirmed by the actor himself in an interview with Kristen Dos Santos ("E Kristen Online"). That said, I don't see any reason not to leave it uncertain til the next episode. --Jackdavinci 07:34, 22 March 2008 (PDT)

Until it is confirmed in canon... Then its staying as unknown! DarkUFO is the site that caused our complete radio silence that we got between Season 3 and 4. I'm not taking anything they say as proof. They trade on spoilers and rumours for hits, we trade off of facts.  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  07:44, 22 March 2008 (PDT)

I think that it is safe to say that he is "presumed dead," as it says on Jin's page. --Ghtx 08:28, 22 March 2008 (PDT)

Agreed. Marko 11:54, 22 March 2008 (PDT)
And Jin's page should not say that either!  Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  13:07, 22 March 2008 (PDT)
There is a Blake Bashoff interview where he says he is not coming back this season (not even for corpse shots), saying clearly that Karl is dead and explaining the process. [2]. If the actor himself isn't canon, someone should explain the reasoning. (i.e why this isn't covered under "Other information that is publicly released; interviews, etc.".) This isn't DarkUFO. This is a public interview. Dharmatel4 12:55, 22 March 2008 (PDT)
Because it is covered under "Private communications of Lost cast/crew" which is non-canon. Gossip rag websites are not CANON! Sure its a public interview, but it is NOT show canon. Plkrtn  talk  contribs  email  13:06, 22 March 2008 (PDT)
While I see your point, how is an interview with a media outlet "private communications"? The actor said in an interview that his character is dead and he's off the show. He may be lying. He may be mistaken. It's not confirmed by the show itself. But there's no question that he actually said that, and said it in public. And Lostpedia DOES use info from the producers and ABC, just look at the O6 article - confirmed by the producers (and promos) but not by the show itself.
As a compromise, what about including a mention in the trivia that the actor said in an interview that he thinks the character is dead and will not be doing any more filming this season? It's verifiable info. --Minderbinder 13:11, 2 April 2008 (PDT)
If he is truly dead, it's a spoiler and the info belongs on the spoiler page. I read the interview in question and believe the situation is as he describes it, however, whether he's dead or alive he did not film the next episode, so he can't know for sure how the producers will portray his fate. They may leave his death ambiguous intentionally so that they can bring him back into the plot if that becomes useful. We've gone through this death thing with Mikhail (was alive!), Naomi (was alive!) and Nikki and Paulo (were dead, but producers clarified this on the podcast). All we know for sure is that the character was put in mortal peril, and that the actor will be working on another (temporary) project for awhile. At the very least, we should wait and see what happens in the next episode. I personally think all Lost deaths should be considered ambiguous until they are buried or rotting :-) --Jackdavinci 14:40, 2 April 2008 (PDT)
I think seeing his decaying body in the ground is canon enough for me. I'm bummed too, but Karl is dead. --Webbrg 22:44, 1 May 2008 (PDT)

The Brady Bunch reference

In the trivia section, someone had posted "This is also a tongue-in-cheek joke referring to Karl's appearance on the show. Chachi and Bobby, like Karl, were both new additions to their shows several seasons into the series run."

Bobby Brady was not a new addition to his show several seasons into the series run... he was a main character always, present from the very first episode. Deleted the "Bobby" part of this trivia...—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kaisle (talkcontribs) .

Episode appearances

Karl's episode count on his own page is different then the count on the character appearance page. Why? --Joshtopher27 02:00, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Greatest Hits flashback

admit it...

  • I agree he had a flashback (though not everyone does, I guess it is kind of arguable) but it's not a centric. Just like Libby and Dave. This means the info belongs on GH's article but not in Karl's infobox... (Even though I believe we reached consensus to include non-centric flashbacks in infoboxes, if we noted them as such, a while back and nothing was done with it... I'll look into that later, I might just be misremembering.) --LeoChris 15:46, July 13, 2010 (UTC)
  • Having a flashback doesn't always mean that the episode is his (or her) centric episode. - SunHwa 17:11, July 13, 2010 (UTC)
  • There is a difference between flashback centric and episode centric. An episode is deemed centric to a character when most of the flashes take place from their POV. The non-centric character can have a flashback in the episode, but it will not be their centric episode, only one single centric flashback. This is the case with Libby, Karl, Juliet, etc.--Baker1000 18:52, July 13, 2010 (UTC)
