- There is no proof that Mittelos Bioscience is a real organization at all, or even an elaborate front. As Richard says in Not in Portland, Mittelos is not "exactly" in Portland. For all we know, it is merely a name on a website and the slideshow Alpert showed to Juliet. For more on this, see the link[1]
- It's a front but it is an long standing one. It's a front that has recruited people to the island for decades. Mittelos was mentioned by Locke's professor when he was in high school and the cover story is still being used to recruit people like Juliet to the island. The advertisement that drew Mikhail to the island was most likely for Mittelos. Mittelos is simply the Others front in the real world that is used to lure in potential recruits. Widmore used to run the Others before Ben did. Widmore's hostiles and Dharma were on opposing sides. The war led to heavy casualties on the hostiles side. This allowed Ben to turn the other hostiles against Widmore...Widmore was ousted and banished from the island while the majority of Dharma was slaughtered. Whoever survived came under Ben's rule and he and his others continued using the Mittelos front to recruit new blood.
- Alternately, Horace and his wife could have been there for the purpose of recruiting Ben and his father.
- Horace was sent by the Others/Mittleos with specific knowledge of where and when to be to recruit Roger and more importantly, to bring Ben to the island.
