Merge with Oceanic Flight 815?[]
Should this be a separate article or should we merge it with the main article as a section? Rennerboy 10:46, 10 November 2006 (PST)
Rename[]
- Proposed rename to Oceanic 815 flight path. --SilvaStorm
- "Oceanic 815 flight path" now redirects to "Flight path of Oceanic 815". --|MMORTAL /\LIEN 13:25, 17 March 2007 (PDT)
- Since the redirect seems to clear this up, I'm going to go ahead and remove the rename tag off the article to help clear out the rename list. Hooper talk contribs email 07:32, 21 March 2007 (PDT)

Most of the conclusions about the flight path in the article are exactly right. But if the GPS were out and the plane was being flown by magnetic compass, the plane may have deviated from its expected course due to the magnetic anomolies in the region of the island (see Desmond's attempts to sail away). The final coordinate calculated should be thought of as the center of a limited range of area where the island might be. They could have deviated slightly north or slightly south of their intended course. Dharmatel4 13:21, 18 March 2007 (PDT)
Real Flight Plan[]
The real flight plan for a YSSY-KLAX route should be like:
YSSY WLM GOANA EKIDA LHI TEKEP NF DOLSI
DUNAK APASI KILAN DODUX TUT DARMA SAPIX
PASSA QUIGG SANTA CANOL BELAN AHNDO LENNA FICKY KLAX
If you read good, you may find DARMA as a waypoint. This is real life waypoints used by airliners.
Considering that the OC815 started to have problems after 6 hours (like 5000-5500 km),
if we measure that distance, following the waypoints on Google Earth, you'll find that
the CONFLICT POINT was over waypoint DARMA (measured distance was 5120km aprox.)
Here's an image of the 1000km radius which includes every possible island where they crashed.

Real flight plan flown by commercial flights connecting Sydney to Los Angeles[]
Actual route connecting SYD (Kingsford Smith International) to LAX (Los Angeles International) is most probably sensibly different than those explained so far. In order to discover the actual crash site of OC815 I studied the FPL of a real flight connecting SYD to LAX: QFA 11. I picked the most recent flight plan from FlightAware (http://flightaware.com/), dated Sept 27th:
QFA11 Qantas Airways Limited “Qantas” (Australia) Aircraft Boeing 747-400 (quad-jet) (H/B744/Q) Origin Sydney Int’l (YSSY) Destination Los Angeles Intl (KLAX) Route DIPSO G595 ALLOC KEBAB 3300S 15600E 3200S 15800E 3100S 16000E 2938S 16300E 2600S 17000E 2524S 17103E TERUX 2300S 17500E 1900S 18000E 1355S 17456W 0800S 17000W 0500S 16700W 0300S 16500W 0300N 16000W 0900N 15500W 1500N 15000W 2000N 14500W 2400N 14000W 2700N 13500W 3000N 12500W WEDES B581 FICKY C1177 SXC Date Thursday, Sep 27, 2007 Duration 12 hours 14 minutes Status Arrived over 4 hours ago (track log) Departure 03:25AM GMT 03:35AM GMT Arrival 08:53AM PDT 08:49AM PDT Speed Mach .84 Altitude 29000 feet
I plotted the route and drew the path expected to be flown from Sydney to Los Angeles by Oceanic 815 and used a cruising speed of 340KIAS (that I chose to have a total flight time to destination of 12 hours and 14 minutes, the same of QF 11 that on Sep. 28th landed in LAX after 12 hours and 8 minutes), a turnaround point 6 hours after departure, a standard 180° turn, and 2 hours of flight NORDO (No Radio) direct to Nadi International airport and obtained a new crash location 350 Kilometers to the W of Samoa and 600 Kilometers to the North of Fiji; a point that is incredibly coicident with a very small island in the Pacific Ocean whose name is Wallis Island (Uvea). According to my study, that is the exact location of Lost island.
Take a look at the following page on my blog: http://cencio4.wordpress.com/works/oceanic-815-crash-location/ if you want so read my complete study and see also the plotted route. --Cencio4 03:04, 20 October 2007 (PDT)cencio4
- Cencio, that's good stuff. It's higher quality data and analysis that what we currently have in this article. You should move it into the main article. Maybe with better graphics. Rennerboy 19:25, 26 March 2008 (PDT)
- Cencio, per our discussion via email, I've created free license graphics and uploaded them here, and updated the flight page article based on your calculations. Take a look and tell me what you think. It might be good to add the lat/longs of your turnaround position and crash position. Rennerboy 21:49, 12 April 2008 (PDT)
