Alarm[]

This might not be too consequential, but it's probably worth noting that the alarm that sounded when Sawyer and that other guy escaped their cage was almost definitely the same one that sounded when Claire escaped from the medical facility in her flashback. You know, the loud blare that kept blasting during her piecemeal memories?

WHO IS THIS GIRL[]

I found this picture of a girl in the same room with Jack while he is unconscious. It was apparently on the ABC Gallery page, image #33, but it has since been removed. Go to the following link, and scroll past the Kevin Federline material (this is a celebrity gossip blog) to the Lost material. Then go to the "Update" at the bottom where you can see the picture with the girl. I tried to upload this image here, but I can't figure out how to do it. This was clearly not on the show, but it appears to have been included wi th gallery footage, and the creators may have intended it but deleted the scene. Still, is this one of the girls missing from the second kidnapping of the Tailies?

Kate[]

Couldn't it be multiple.--CaptainInsano
I'd doubt that, just given that 2x01 was a simple Jack episode. Plus Kate is more due for a flashback than anyone. --Piscez 18:30, 30 July 2006 (PDT)

  • Kristen from E! Online claims that the episode is Jack-centric. 'We see more of his dad guilt,' apparently.
She on TV?--CaptainInsano 18:26, 12 September 2006 (PDT)
I think so, but I've never seen her. I'm guessing American people might know of her...There's an interview with her here Quigley
Judging by the promos and what the writers have said about Kate in these first few episodes, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a Kate episode. I also seem to remember them saying it was at Comic Con.

Title[]

  • Some trivia information about the title, don't know if it fits in the article (and as my English is not my first language, I'm carefull with adding information); Jaaptalk! 02:29, 30 July 2006 (PDT)
A Tale of Two Cities is a novel written by Charles Dickens. Lost character Desmond Hume has read this book as he's a big fan of Charles Dickens. A Tale of Two Cities was written in 1859 and the primary source for this historical novel is a book by Thomas Carlyle, The French Revolution. Main themes in the book are guilt, shame and patriotism. A summary of the plot and character analysis can be read over at Wikipedia.
    • Ooh, Thomas Carlyle. Boone's namesake, for those that remember. Possibly some more connections to the late Boone are being hinted at here.

Hey, it could happen. They're doing it with Libby. --Aero*Zeppelin 12:43, 30 July 2006 (PDT)

Um, a minor niggle perhaps, but listening to the Comic Con podcast, I'm hearing "The Tale of Two Cities" Jonathan Fakenham

It is 100% "A" not "The".--CaptainInsano
I love how people from other countries are taught niggle in place of lie. anyway, a tal of 2 cities, maybe one of the 10 greatest books aver written, I'm not sure why the producers would change the name of such a great novel for the show. --Kman       talk contribs                   10:20, 10 August 2006 (PDT)
Isn't the first sentence: "They were the best of times, and they were the worst of times". Or something like that.--CaptainInsano
Yep - "IT WAS the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way- in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."
Guess which Lostaways think it was the spring of hope vs. the winter of despair? (See the whole book if you want to do your homework before the season starts!) --Jajasoon 10:46, 10 August 2006 (PDT)

Dickens References[]

So now we've had two episodes share titles with Dickens novels. What do you think the chances are that there will be an episode in which the Losties celebrate Christmas and other winter holiday celebrations, called "A Christmas Carol"? XSG 10:53, 10 August 2006 (PDT)

  • Huh? What was the other one? I am assuming that the season 3 finale will be another Dickens novel, to bookend the season (Like Man of Science, Man of Faith / Live Together, Die Alone). Possibly the obvious "Our Mutual Friend". --Piscez 17:27, 16 August 2006 (PDT)
  • I added something about this to trivia, but I've never read any Dickens so I don't know what about it to say. Obviously, Utopiaville is the second city. But is that the only thing? Can someone who is well familiar with Dickens' books comment as to whether there is significance in naming this episode A Tale OF Two Cities? I know the book is about the French Revolution, but that's it. Is Utopiaville Supposed to be the radical french revolutionaries? Scunning 08:45, 6 October 2006 (PDT)

Really pointless reference.[]

I'm deleting this: On an episode of the Disney Channel's show Phil of the Future, Keely Teslow's story is called A Tale of Two Cities

Because it has absolutely nothing to do with anything, IMHO. --Piscez 17:12, 16 August 2006 (PDT)

Trivia?[]

Why is the note about the Charles Dickens book of the same name under references? Isn't it just trivia?

No because it could give insite on what the esipode might be about. PS: Sign your posts on talk pages.--CaptainInsano 18:25, 12 September 2006 (PDT)

Jack flashback?[]

  • Are we 100% sure? --SilvaStorm 03:23, 13 September 2006 (PDT)
As far as we are aware, its a Kate centric flashback. Jack centric episode doesn't mean its his flashback, especially if it involves his father, who we've seen on the Island --plkrtn 03:29, 13 September 2006 (PDT)
  • Ausiello says that the first episode is a Jack flashback episode. According to his "Lost flashback mole, Jack is up first, followed by Locke, Sun-Jin and Sawyer." --Quigley
  • 09/11 - [The first episode is Jack-centric not Kate-centric.] We'll see more of why he feels so guilty about his dad. Jack is in a glass enclosure, and will be interacting a lot with a character we haven't yet seen. Kate is in an examining room, and will be interacting with a character we know! ABC Sneak Peak[]

Did anyone else get a chance to catch this, tape it, and could summarize it? I saw it, but can't recall everything. I do know that one of the new characters is trapped in a cage next to Sawyer and another is talking to Jack in a room with a chalkboard (with the equation on it). Where should I put this info in the article?--Mighty Rearranger 17:54, 14 September 2006 (PDT)

I saw the part with Sawyer in the cage, but missed the part with Jack in the room with the chalkboard. Is it on YouTube? --CrystalSkull 07:42, 15 September 2006 (PDT)

Promotional Photos[]

Right here. Have fun..  ODK Talk   Sandbox 17:58, 14 September 2006 (PDT)

  • Which brings me to another question. Should I create a new article for the cage that Sawyer is kept in? It seemed quite elaborate to me and is definately portrayed as a major mystery.--Mighty Rearranger 18:07, 14 September 2006 (PDT)
No, not yet if ever.--CaptainInsano 18:09, 14 September 2006 (PDT)

Alright, understandable. I guess I just thought the weird button was cool. But, I do think that something needs to be added about the sneak peak scene(s), just not sure what to include and what to exclude.--Mighty Rearranger 18:25, 14 September 2006 (PDT)

Don't these promo photos pretty much prove it's a Jack flashback episode? --CrystalSkull 07:48, 15 September 2006 (PDT)

  • It seems like it, but who's to say that there won't be multi-character flashbacks in this episode. It is very possible seeing as Jack, Kate, and Sawyer seem to be getting equal screentime in different places on the island.--Mighty Rearranger 12:03, 15 September 2006 (PDT)

PRESPOILER REORGANIZATION[]

  • This article has been reformatted to conform to precedence of nearly 50 prior episode synopsis articles. Speculation, spoilers, and trivia have been moved to the prespoilers article, following precedence of Lost Season 3/prespoilers. If you are thinking of adding content, and are unsure if it belongs in the main episode synopsis article, PLEASE SEE OTHER EXISTING SYNOPSES (i.e., choose any episode from S1 or S2). Please discuss here if you disagree.
  • Also, the spoiler tag has been re-added to the gallery, as even official previews are considered spoilers by some fans, and the purpose of the tag is to warn all spoiler-concerned fans, especially as the images have been carefully screencapped AND image captions include detailed speculative text-- these two facts make this gallery much more explicitly spoiling than watching the preview video clip on TV. Please discuss here if you disagree and wish to remove the spoiler tag. Thank you.
  • I removed the {{Pos-fake}} from the remaining synopsis main article. If you disagree please discuss here; for example the identification of overall plot line, guest stars or flashback focal character may be from unofficial sources, as defined by Lostpedia.

Book Article Question[]

  • Do we need an article for: A Tale of Two Cities (book)? Its citation in an episode title is notable enough, and it would make a nice sister article with Our Mutual Friend. However we'd need to take care to make the content largely relevant to Lost, as is the OMF article.

-- Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯  Talk 12:39, 20 September 2006 (PDT)

  • I think that we need to wait until after the episode airs to make any in depth analysis' of the book. I'm only saying this because most of the comparisons are, thus far, unanswered theories. The article would end up in the same style as the Dark Tower one, which was recently deleted. I think it deserves mention in the Our Mutual Friend article, but not an entire page (just yet).

I don't see why this article shouldn't be updated as soon as someone's seen the episode, so long as there's a spoiler tag prepended... XSG 00:56, 5 October 2006 (PDT)
  • Do we know that the place where Kate and Sawyer is being held is the Hydra? I'd think that was the second of the two cities in the title, maybe?ConsiderPhlebas
  • The begining was badass! I loved seeing 815 break up in mid-air. Plus (although it was kinda-sorta comfirmed in Live Together Die Alone) we got to see that the crash WAS an accident.

Stephen King book[]

I'm new here, so I don't know how things work precisely. Through the means of pausing the book club scene and looking at this site (the cover is second one from the left in the second row), I've determined that the book they were discussing was Carrie. Is this too much of a stretch to be added in the trivia section? Just want to make sure before I added it.

I think it's a great and possibly important addition to the Trivia section: Lost's writers don't often throw random books into the show.
Also, please add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comment, which will automatically add your name and a timestamp. XSG 00:52, 5 October 2006 (PDT)

Theory Policy[]

I will be monitoring for somewhat strict adherence to the LostPedia:Theory policy. I'm tired of seeing unsubstantiated speculations, theories phrased as questions, and debates.

If you add speculation to the theory section: I will remove it from the article and place it in a "Speculations" section of the talk page.

If you phrase a theory as a question: I will think poorly of you and I will rephrase your theory in such a way that new Lostpedia readers won't think this site is maintained by a bunch of teenagers.

If you debate a theory in the article: I will simply delete your comments. Debate belongs on talk pages and it isn't my job to get them there.

That's about it. If you don't like the way I've rephrased something, change it; I'm not committed to your writing, just to a reasonable (and communicated) standard of professionalism. And I hate cleaning up after other people... XSG 00:50, 5 October 2006 (PDT)

Jack's food?[]

Which Dharma logo was on the water bottle that Juliet was trying to give to Jack? If it was a Swan logo, they either had contact with the station or were intercepting their food drops. If it was a Hydra logo, or some other logo, then we'd know whether or not they get get seperate or any supply drops. --Fezir 09:00, 5 October 2006 (PDT).

Kate's Handcuffs[]

When Kate was brought to the cell opposite Sawyer, she had deep marks on her wrists. Assumably these were from the handcuffs; but since she put them on herself, I've got to wonder what happened between breakfast and fish biscuit. Easter Eggs?[]

I could have sworn I saw Tom (Mr. Friendly) lying in the hospital bed in Jack's flash back. He was the patient that he was treating when he was distracted by his father getting a phone call. Then the nurse asks him if he is sure that the patient can administer his own pain meds. Can anyone confirm this? --Latca 11:19, 5 October 2006 (PDT)

  • It does seem to be him. That hair is only seen on one other person in the show and seeing as Jack's dad is already there on his cell phone.... --Mighty Rearranger 13:37, 5 October 2006 (PDT)
  • I actually thought it was Angelo (same hair style) :-P But I guess he was supposed to be dead! --Jambalaya 17:03, 5 October 2006 (PDT)

Cotton Balls[]

  • I don't think it was shown. The other two were pretty obvious, unless someone can point out Sawyer having one at some point in the episode it's a good possibility that only two of the three were injected. --Minderbinder 13:29, 5 October 2006 (PDT)
I am thinking that Sawyer probably fought it.--CaptainInsano 14:47, 5 October 2006 (PDT)
Fought the drug, or fought being injected? Being tied up, and considering the others had sleeping darts, I doubt he could avoid getting injected if they wanted to do it to him. --Minderbinder 15:33, 5 October 2006 (PDT)
That is true, but is weird how it didn't show him take one off. It zoomed in to show it on Jack and Kate. I mean it would be hard not to notice a cotton ball taped to your arm.--CaptainInsano
That's why I'm assuming Sawyer wasn't given the shot. --Minderbinder 05:35, 6 October 2006 (PDT)
He's wearing long sleeves, so it's likely he didn't even notice that he has one. I don't think I would... Joelvanatta 20:23, 7 October 2006 (PDT)

Tarzan and Jane[]

Did anyone else notice how much the sence with Kate and Sawyer says "Tarzan and Jane"? Kate with a dress and sawyer in a monkey cage, and they are both in a jungle! Just thought I'd point this out, if anyone feels like making a new article/theory out of it. like the Wizard Of Oz theory. --Assaf 17:26, 5 October 2006 (PDT)

  • It's a stretch. And for the record, Tom insinuated that the cages once held bears. Joelvanatta 19:27, 5 October 2006 (PDT)

I've got a picture, but I've got a few questions[]

I'm new to this, and I'm wondering two questions.

(1.) I've found a 3 piece picture of the plane breaking apart. But it's at another website and I'd like to enter it into the entry for S03E01. I'd give the website and credit them.

(2.) How... uh, DO I upload it to Lostpedia?

--The Wily Panda 09:30, 24 October 2006 (PDT)

On the left hand side of the page underneath the advertisments there will be a box named "toolbox". Click on the link called upload file and im sure you can figure out the rest. Hope this helped --DrGiggles

Food/Dignity[]

I was (gasp!) reading another site full of theories online, and one that struck me pointed out that Jack, Kate and Sawyer all had to give up their dignity in order to partake in a meal. Jack= against the wall and spread 'em; Sawyer= do the bear-dance; Kate= play dress-up and sit with a man she despised.

Anyone else notice that or think it means anything beyond the episode? --Brother 21:46, 24 January 2007 (PST)

Automat[]

Language dub ruins LOST. In the German version of "A Tale of Two Cities" broadcasted Mo. 10/15/2007, instead of saying "Do have an automat, I could use a blow job", Sawyer asks for a divan and a blow-dryer. --Donburi Kaminari 10:29, 16 October 2007 (CET)

Flashforward?[]

I was thinking that some of this episode might be flashforwards. We see the 2007 car, and according to "Through the Looking Glass" Christain might still be alive when they get off the island. I was interested in adding this to the theories page unless anyone knows of any details why not. --Ohmyn0 (talk) 21:30, 25 November 2007 (PST)

So how much footage did they originally shoot?!?[]

We have the "lost flashback" from the DVD set, promotional stills that hint at another, still unreleased deleted scene that features the girl from Jack's deleted flashback appearing in his cell inside the Hydra; and now we got "The Envelope". Did they initially shoot the episode with the intention to make it a two-parter or what?--Nevermore 16:13, 21 January 2008 (PST)

No, episodes usually have a few deleted scenes, many of which end up on the DVD, whereas others end up on the cutting room floor as they aren't that significant, don't fit in, or take up time in the episode. --Lewis-Talk-Contribs 16:16, 21 January 2008 (PST)

Repo Man (cultural reference)[]

Maybe it's a stretch, but when Jack says: "I'm a repo man. You know, when people don't pay their bills I go into the bank and collect their possessions. I'm a people person so I really love it." - I couldn't help but think of the similarity between the generic DHARMA "products" and the generic products in Alex Cox's film, Repo Man

Given the faith versus reason themes present in Repo Man, and the fact that out of all random professions Jack could have joked about, I guess it's not so much of a stretch.

Juliet flashback[]

I realize that this episode is Jack-centric, but I think it should be mentioned that there is one Juliet flashback in the episode. This would be consistent with articles such as Dave (episode), which lists both Hurley's and Libby's flashbacks. Gefred7112 02:20, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Main Image[]

Why not use the one of Jack holding Juliet with a piece of the plate? That way the centric character and the non-centric flash both get to be in the picture, and it's also descriptive about the episode (shows the Hydra logo)... I realize Juliet is not the centric character, but I think the image will work better than just Jack's face. DieYoungStayPretty 03:04, July 29, 2010 (UTC)

  • Neutral I like the idea of changing it to something more iconic, but I'm not sure how I feel about having Juliet in it. She did have a flashback in the episode, so it's not entirely out of the question, but I'm undecided. Either way, though, we should remove the watermark from the bottom right.  Jimbo the Tubby  talk  contributions  20:45, July 29, 2010 (UTC)
  • Neutral As per Jimbo, I wouldn't mind having an image featuring both characters, since they both had flashes. --LeoChris 20:47, July 29, 2010 (UTC)

Okay, so I think we should decide. The image I'm refering to is this one: File:3X01 JulietJack.jpg. It shows the main centric character, the non-centric flashback, and the Hydra logo, all of which is very relevant to the episode, and much more descriptive than just a close-up of Jack (and, as Jimbo points out, a watermark). Anybody have a reason to keep it? (File:3X01_JackJulietIsland.jpg could also work, but it's sort of Jackface...)

Blooper? Jack's degree(s)[]

Juliet says Jack went to Columbia and graduated med school a year early, not that he went to med school at Columbia, i.e. he could have gone to Columbia as an undergraduate and then attended med school in California.--Paleored 19:59, December 8, 2010 (UTC)

Right. Jack's own article correctly states that he went to Columbia and went to UCLA for med school. --- Balk Of Fametalk 20:09, December 8, 2010 (UTC)
