"What did one snowman say to the other snowman?" was a recurring joke on Lost.

Occurrences

Answers

  • Desmond gave the answer, "Smells like carrots," to Locke.
  • Alternate answers include "Freeze," "Chill," "Ice to see you," and "We're stuck in a bloody snow globe!"

Notes

  • Both Kelvin and Desmond asked, "Are you him?" before asking this question/joke.
    • When Desmond first wakes up in Inman's care, Inman asks him, "Are you him?" and then as a test asks him "What did one snowman say to the other?" ("Live Together, Die Alone, Part 1").
    • Desmond asks Locke "Are you him? Are you him?" Locke pretends that he is and Desmond with great relief says "I can't believe it. You're finally here." But when he asks him the snowman question Locke doesn't know and Desmond realizes Locke is not indeed "Him." ("Adrift")
  • There are persistent rumors that this joke was told by other characters in other situations.

Trivia

  • An Easter Egg on the 7th "extras" DVD of Season 2 shows videotape footage of Dominic Monaghan in 2005, casually telling the joke to cast and crew on the beach. The punchline he uses is "Does it smell like carrots?" There are a few chuckles, and he says, "Silly, I know."
  • Its use is similar to the Shadow of the statue question used by Ilana's group personnel, to acknowledge each other as part of Jacob's followers.
