The shooting victim was a man that Eko was forced to kill as a young boy. The Nigerian militants pulled him from a village crowd for young Yemi to shoot in the head. Yemi, however, was unable to do it, so young Eko took the gun from his hands and killed the man instead, to save his brother from repercussions and further trauma. The militant thugs laughed and called Eko a "born killer" before kidnapping him.
