The Shadow of the Statue question, appearing in "Dead Is Dead", is a cryptic test apparently revealing important information about the person questioned. The question has been raised twice, both times resulting in violent rebuttals by the questioner. The answer to the question is currently unknown, and many theories abound.
Los Angeles (2004)
In a flashback from "Some Like It Hoth", Miles is walking down the street when a dark van pulls alongside him. Bram, a stranger to Miles, invites him into the van to talk. He tells Miles that working for Widmore is a mistake, and Bram insinuates that all of Miles questions about his purpose will be answered if he will join their cause. Miles bargains for more money, asking Bram's team to double what Widmore is willing to pay. Bram responds with the question: What lies in the shadow of the statue? When Miles is unable to answer, Bram has him thrown out of the vehicle.
Hydra Island (2008)
After Lapidus returns to the Hydra Island in "Dead Is Dead", he is met by a redshirt who tells him "they" have taken over because "they" have guns. Lapidus discovers Ilana and Bram near the large metal box. When he tries to assess the situation, Ilana asks, "What lies in the shadow of the statue?" Frank is confused, and Bram adds, "Just answer the question." When he cannot respond, Ilana knocks Frank unconscious.
