Rachel is a friend of Claire Littleton from Australia. She talked Claire into visiting the psychic Richard Malkin and was with her the first time she visited Richard.
She said that Claire's mother doesn't know about the pregnancy. As we later realize, this is because Claire's mother is comatose at the time.
