Actions

  • Penny is actually Annie. She got off the Island.
    • Only possible if Ben doesn't know anything about it. Otherwise I cannot imagine that he wants to kill her in the future as seen in The Shape Of Things To Come.
  • She and her father Charles are business associates with Mittelos Bioscience (The Others) and have access to the listening stations which is how she was able to transmit her message to Charlie so quickly. Ben is right about Naomi and crew being the real enemy and Naomi lied about working for Penny to gain their trust.
  • She knows that the island was a DHARMA research facility and created the listening station to find it. Possibly knew of The Incident.
  • According to the words of Penelope in Desmond flashback where Jack arrives to the stadium: "With a lot of money and determination, you can find anyone." Now she is trying to track Desmond because of love, but it appears to be a hard bone because the Island's electromagnetism scatters light in a way that makes the island invisible, see Daniel's journal.
  • She appears to have hired the two men assigned to Listening Station to search for the electromagnetic signal and/or Desmond.
  • She was involved in sending a Widmore employee or beneficiary (the real Henry Gale) on a balloon expedition to the island in search of Desmond.
  • She is involved with DHARMA, which explains how she knew to look for Desmond by searching for electromagnetic anomalies.
  • She could know that Desmond is on the island because Desmond told her all about it when he (probably) travelled back in time.
    • He (probably) didn't travel back in time. He maybe time travelled. But probably relived his whole life in flash forward in his mind.
      • According to Damon Lindelof in the Latest (June 07) issue of the Lost magazine, Desmond did travel back in time.
  • After Desmond disappears, she tracked down Donovan and found out some of the information Desmond told him, and then began to investigate her father's involvement with the island.
  • The listening stations are supposed to report to Charles Widmore or the Hanso Foundation, but Penelope has found out about the the hatches, The Button, and the discharge through the new information Desmond inserted into the past during his "time-travel," and has arranged for Mathias and Henrik to secretly alert her when the discharge occurs.
  • She put a tracking device in The Elizabeth that tracks where Desmond goes and is.
    • Very likely. 'With enough power and money you can find anyone'. Then the tracker stopped functioning when he got to the Island so Penny searched the area, discovering strange magnetic activity and set up the post with Henrik and Matias to pinpoint the area. Just a theory but it explains why Penny might know the general whereabouts of Desmond.
      • That would beg the question why the post was put up in the Arctic.
  • Ms. Hawking fears Desmond will go to the island and kill himself by turning the failsafe key. In the post hatch timeline, Desmond eventually learns from Locke that this is how he dies and Desmond tells Penelope to watch for the magnetic anomoly.
  • Charles Widmore had involvement and knew of The Island, and knew that Desmond was stranded there. Widemore may have even deliberately sent Desmond to the island. During the ensuing three years however, Charles Widmore died and his company was taken over by his daughter Penelope. After taking control of the company, Penelope discovered what her father did to Desmond and set out to find him. She learned that the island could only be found by monitoring the earth for magnetic discharges that sometimes emanate from the island. The Portuguese men at the Antarctic station were either hired by Penelope or her father to watch for such discharges. Such a discharge occurred on September, 22 2004 when Desmond was late in pushing the button, but the Portuguese men failed to acquire the data needed to find the island. About two months later, the Portuguese men became aware of a second discharge, and this time were able to pull the data necessary to find the island and sent it to Penelope. She then sent Naomi to the island to find and rescue Desmond, providing Naomi a copy of the photo of the couple for reference, which Naomi was using as a bookmark. Something went wrong during Naomi's helicopter ride over the island however, and she crashed on to the island as well.
    • However in 3x22 it is revealed that Penny did not send the boat.
      • Penny said, "I'm not on a boat. Who's Naomi?" The fact that she's not on a boat does not mean that she didn't send the boat (there was no time to clarify what boat Charlie was talking about). And the fact that she didn't recognize Naomi's name is a non-issue since Naomi had already said she'd never met Penny. So, the question remains: Did Penny hire Naomi's team or not?
          • Probably not, because they said they're looking for Ben and no-one else (4x09). But it still is possible.
  • Penelope knows to look for a magnetic anomaly because Desmond told her during a flashback/time travel or whatever you call this experience.
  • Penelope appears suddenly on the monitor in the Looking Glass, she was there at the right time and on the right radio frequency, this could suggest she knows what is going on the island and could have been in contact with the Others in the Looking Glass.
    • Unlikely, due to the jamming device located in the underwater station. However the machine says "incoming transmission" just after it is disabled - perhaps Richard Alpert or someone else told her to phone in at a certain time.
  • Penelope is a senior Dharma person.
    • 1. As soon as the jamming was stopped the Looking Glass station called Penelope. We know this because she asked "How did you get this frequency?".
    • 2. This implies that the station has been trying to call "home", ie call Dharma for a long time and that presumably this signal is what Ben has been blocking.
    • 3. Following on from this then Penny hasn't been trying to find Desmond, she's been trying to find the Island and it's coincidence (or fate) that Desmond is there.
  • The scene at the end of "Live Together, Die Alone" in which call the two men call Penny saying they 'found it.' is actually a flashforward to the end of Season 4, and these are the people who save the Oceanic 6.
  • Penny hired Naomi's company, just like Naomi said, and Charlie misunderstood her when he spoke to her from The Looking Glass.
  • Penny hired Naomi's company, but not the Penelope that Charlie spoke to. Charlie spoke to a Penelope from before she hired Naomi's company and later this Penelope hires Naomi's company after thinking about what Charlie said and realising she has a chance of finding Desmond.
  • The mythology part of the story is like the equivalent of Odysseus (Desmond) trying to get back to his wife, Penelope (Penelope) and his adventure back to her is like the Odyssey.

Penny is the one helping Sam Thomas find flight 815 since she found out about the survivors from Charlie

  • Somehow she is on the island, thats why Charles Widmore told Ben that the hunt for the island is on for both of them.
    • Or that she is on the island and because Ben can't return to the island she is, in Widmore's case safe from the harmful intentions of Ben.

Character Connections

  • Jack knows Penelope. Jack recognised her when he saw Desmond's photograph.
  • Penelope was romantically involved with another survivor of Flight 815, meaning she and Desmond have a "mutual friend".
    • Penelope may not have been romantically involved with Jack, but he could be their "Mutual Friend"
  • Penelope was engaged to Daniel Faraday. This explains the uneasy look between Daniel and Frank when Desmond is questioning Frank about Penny. This may explain how Naomi had the picture of Penny and Desmond...Daniel swiped it or copied it. Daniel may know everything Penelope discovered in her search for the island and passed it on his people. Daniel's inexplicable crying when he saw the news of flight 815 directly ties into Desmond altering the timeline...on some instinctive level Daniel somehow sensed flight 815 crashing in the ocean was wrong.
    • Desmond and (presumably Penny) was a friend of a physicist named Donovan. Donovan may have introduced Penny and Daniel.
  • Juliet - Juliet worked for a fertility company and the Widmore Corporation are known to produce pregnancy tests so it's not too unlikely, in the world of Lost, that Juliet is linked to the Widmores.
  • She is on Ben's list, but Sayid won't kill her, because he know that she is love of Desmond and he doesn't want to cause to Desmond the same pain as was his, when Nadia was killed by Ishmael Bakir.
    • Agreed. The next name Ben refers to in the end of The Economist could even be Penelope Widmore, herself. The fact that Penny is on Bens list is proven by the ending of Shape of things to come.
