Main Discussion
Theories may be removed if ...
  1. Stated as questions or possibilities (avoid question marks, "Maybe", "I think", etc).
  2. More appropriate for another article.
  3. Illogical or previously disproven.
  4. Proven by canon source, and moved to main article.
  5. Speculative and lacking any evidence to support arguments.
  6. Responding to another theory (use discussion page instead).
  • This does not include responses that can stand alone as its own theory.
  • Usage of an indented bullet does not imply the statement is a response.

See the Lostpedia theory policy for more details.

Jack acting normal with the Others

  • Jack knows he can't escape the Others, so he just decides to relax and slow things down.
  • He joined them by choice, so that Kate and Sawyer could escape.
  • He has been drugged and/or brainwashed.
  • He is just pretending that he has accepted his fate, while he secretly plots his escape.
  • Jack made a bargain with the Others. He will cooperate and not try to cause problems, and in exchange, the Others probably will either agree to leave the beachers alone, or provide something for Juliet after a period of time.
  • The Others have told Jack their motives for living on the Island, and for some reason he has accepted them and agreed to help/side with them.
  • He is exhibiting Stockholm syndrome, wherein a hostage becomes sympathetic or attached to his captors.
  • The whole thing is a faux, just as when Michael was shown the other "Hatch" door in Season 2. When Mikhail crossed the fence, it set off an alarm in the barracks. The Others sprang into action and set up the elaborate scene the A-Team stumbled upon.
    • If the Others control the Monster, and the above theory is true, it is possible that Tom is playing football with a manifestation of the monster and not the real Jack. We know the monster can take on various real "solid" forms.
  • Jack realises that the Others are "good people" and do not mean any harm
  • Jack needs to stay on the island to nurse Ben back to health before he can be freed from the island. So in the meantime, he bides his time in whatever way he wants before he gets to leave.

Locke is an Other

Main article: John Locke/Theories
  • Locke wants to be one of the Others, to be accepted by the Island and its people, but he's not a pre-existing Other.
  • Locke's DNA type may match whatever enables the Island's special power.
  • Locke wants to destroy the Others.
  • Locke wants revenge on Ben, who completely fooled and manipulated him in order to escape from the Hatch.
  • Locke has come this far to kill Ben.
  • Locke knew what was in the Flame already. Once he knew the C4 was downstairs (as he clearly did before he left, because he took some), it's hard to believe he would have entered 77 unless he knew the explosion would be delayed. We don't know what happened after he entered 77; it's possible that the computer asked him more questions, like "Are the hostiles there now?", giving him the option to delay the explosion, but it's also possible that he knew beforehand that there wouldn't be an immediate explosion.
    • We didn't see Locke entering "77".
  • Locke deliberately blew up The Flame because he doesn't want anyone to contact the outside world.
    • Locke is displaying a pattern here, as he once knocked out Sayid and destroyed his radio equipment in an attempt to prevent rescue from the island. The island is magical to Locke, and he credits the island with curing his paralysis. He will do whatever it takes to stay on the island. Locke's interest in the others could be part of the same pattern: he learned from Mikhail that the Others possess means to leave the island, which Locke would like to eliminate.
  • Locke observed that the fence is a sonic defence system yet it could have just as easily been an electronic charge that killed Mikhail.
  • When Ben was captured he told Locke that he was coming for him, so Locke now wants to find Ben because Locke believes the Others is his purpose for being on the island.

Sayid is the one acting Strangely

  • We have yet to be shown exactly what happened after the incident on the sailboat. A future flashback will show how Sun, Jin & Sayid made it back.
    • One or all of them could have been captured, "brainwashed" and returned to the beach with a cover story.
      • If this is the case, Sayid could be leading Kate & Locke into a trap at Otherville.

Locke is part of Dharma

  • Locke is an agent of DHARMA and is attempting to eliminate the Others/Hostiles. Mikhail knows him from "before", and Mikhail was perhaps in DHARMA, but was converted to an Other, so he knew Locke from DHARMA. He alerts DHARMA that hostiles have taken over the relay station, and blows it up (knowing the C4 was there) intentionally. He kills Mikhail without a second thought.
    • Mikhail probably just knew of Locke from the extensive information the Others have of the castaways. He just said he had some sliver of memory of him, because he wanted to really drive the point home that he knew Locke was paralyzed and didn't want his secret out.
    • Locke would not continue to use his real name (known to Mikhail) if he was really a former DHARMA agent undercover on the Island.
      • Locke is/was DHARMA, but he wasn't sent on the island intentionally, because in this case he would have been aware of the hatches and their use. Maybe he just wants to act like DHARMA because he thinks that contacting DHARMA is the only way to get off the island

The Fence

  • Mikhail thanked Locke because he wanted to die. The Island prevents inhabitants from dying of natural causes. They can only die from trauma like Boone, Shannon, Ana-Lucia, Libby, Roger, Yemi, Bea, Mikhail, Ethan, Edward Mars, etc. This explains why Rose is not dying. Whatever Jack thought about Ben's life being in danger, Ben was only fearful of disability.
    • If Ben were made disabled he would be 'repaired' by the island as Locke was
    • The island only repairs outsiders, not Ben who was born there
  • The fence is not a sonic barrier, it's an evil detection system. It repels bad people. Good people can pass unharmed.
    • Mikhail had never been able to cross the barrier. He ended up on the Otherville side of the fence. This is why he thanked Locke.
  • It seems obvious why Mikhail thanked Locke for killing him -- he wanted to die ever since he was captured last week, and Sayid refused to do it (under the thin pretense of being merciful, as a parallel to his torture victim who forgave him).
  • Mikhail thanks Locke for killing him because he would have been punished by Him for having failed, which would have been a worse death. Also, since the Others have an eye-for-an-eye policy about murdering one of their own, Mikhail felt he deserved to die for having killed Ms. Klugh (and would have been killed by the Others anyway).
    • Mikhail and Klugh's discussion was a suicide pact. This is one of the directives of being an Other, the willingness to kill yourself rather than being captured. In '"Enter 77"', Mikhail tries to commit suicide by placing the gun against his head, but is stopped by Locke. He also tries to convince Sayid to kill him. In the end, he gets Locke to kill him by enticing him with knowledge about Locke's past.
  • DHARMA built the sonic fence around their Barracks to protect themselves against attacks by the Hostiles.
  • The Others cross the sonic barrier via subterranean passages
    3x12 ParAvion Cabling Map

Cable map as seen in "Par Avion" detailing the barracks and showing the subterranean passages

  • The fence was not intended to stop humans (who can just climb over). It was intended to stop animals.
  • The fence was not explicitly intended to keep tresspassers out; it was simple enough for Locke, Kate, and Sayid to cut a tree and climb over. The fence was meant to keep people inside the barracks.
    • The fence is not a conventional security system that's just concerned with deterring human intruders. By definition, a deterrant warns you of possible danger in the hope that you will go away. If it was meant to be a deterrant to humans, there would be visible warning signs (much like 'electrical hazard' symbol signs that is commonly used). Without an initial warning, the fence is not a deterrant, it is an excecution system. Either the builder of the fence wanted the intruder to be killed rather than just deterred or the builder did not expect an intruder to understand a hazard symbol.
  • The Sonic fence is better than a conventional fence or brick wall because objects and beings that are not sensitive to its power can pass freely through it.

Claire's flashback

  • After Christian Shephard's death, funding for Claire's mother's medical treatment might have come to an end.
    • Claire most likely doesn't even know this, as Christian died the day before the flight and Claire was given the tickets the day before the flight. Claire was probably too busy to even go to the hospital before she left.
  • Christian Shephard knew about the island and DHARMA, and that is what he meant when he talked to Claire about other alternatives for her mother.
  • Claire has telekinetic powers like Walt. She was having an arguement with her mother whilst driving and made a lorry crash into their car. Claire did not appear to witnesses to be the guilty party. She was never prosecuted.
    • She also said she wished her mother was dead, and seconds later nearly killed her in the accident.
  • Claire eventually kills her mother before she leaves for the USA.
  • Christian says a friend told him about the accident. In reality, Christian found out about the accident because Lindsey told him. Lindsey wasn't surprised to see Christian, she was just surprised to see him at the hospital.

Miscellaneous

  • Mikhail knew about Locke's paralysis, which means he had background information on him before the crash. This raises the theory, what if the castaways were brought to the island by the Others?
    • Cindy would have likely known about Locke's paralysis, and is now living, apparently comfortably, with The Others as seen in "Stranger in a Strange Land"." Her faulty information about Nathan and Goodwin, her presence in the tail section despite last being seen chasing Charlie to the front of the plane, plus her extremely sudden disappearance in "Abandoned" could indicate she was an Other mole, which would in turn seem to indicate that the plane crash was not an accident. The again, she could have also simply told The Others what she knew about Flight 815's passengers after she was abducted for any number of reasons.
    • However, if he was, as he claims, in charge of the only means of communicating with the outside world, it stands to reason that any research done by The Others on the survivors would have been done through him.
  • Locke has acquired the same ability to see the future that Desmond received from the fail safe explosion. It appears he is acting against Sayid and Kate, but really he is saving them from some unknown catastrophe.
    • Such future vision is why he could beat an incredibly difficult chess program that plays like a grandmaster at the Flame Station
      • Locke didn't need to beat the computer. To activate the manual override, he achieved a mate in 2, which the computer claimed was a checkmate. Given that playing a full game of chess to achieve manual override would take too long if the circumstances were urgent, the program likely had a shortcut where a particular set of moves triggered the override. In other words, the program had a 'cheat' built in.
  • Desmond has seen "premonitions" of Charlie's death when Charlie was at Claire's tent, saving Claire in the ocean, and trying to get a seagull for Claire. Is Charlie's life only in danger as long as he's with Claire?
    • More likely, Claire is the person he's with most of the time, and also the only one he would risk his life for.
  • The seagulls will go to the Hydra
  • Charlie probably just said 80 days since they were so close. He was just rounding.
  • The Others already knew their surnames prior to this incident; case in point: the List Ms. Klugh made for Michael.
  • Mikhail knows all this info because the Whispers tell him so.
  • Showing Claire's left eye at the start of the flashback then her right eye at the start of the beach scene could indicate a change in her character from the standpoint of the Island. Perhaps she has redeemed herself from prior sins.
    • This theory would tie into the Mural, where the male figure has one white eye (his left) and one black (his right).
      • Perhaps the female figure in the mural is Claire.
  • The reason Desmond stopped Claire, Sun, and Jin from catching the birds is because had she would never catch the one with the tag on it, therefore causing Charlie to go out to find the bird for her, and then dying.
  • Jack gets the rest of his tattoo at Claire's shop. Not necessarily by Claire, but connected somehow.
