Wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815

Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 was carried on a Boeing 777, a new twin-jet long range design that came out in 1994.1

On September 22nd 2004, apparently 6 hours into the flight, Flight 815 encountered problems with their radio.2 The pilot decided to turn to Fiji, and 2 hours or so after that the plane hit turbulence.3

The plane began to sharply nosedive, and then broke into several pieces. The tail section broke off first, and crashed into the ocean. Moments later, the front/cockpit section and the middle sections crashed on the island.

The crash corresponds precisely with an electromagnetic burst, which occured when Desmond failed to push the button in the Swan. Although the exact mechanics of the crash are uncertain, it seems plausable that the magnetic pull from the burst was strong enough to rip the plane apart.

As with many occurrences with The Numbers throughout the show, a common combination with a separate article is 815 (or 0815). Flight 815 Seat Numbers ... and actually departed at 14:55 (1+4+5+5 = 15) from gate 23.

Information on the Oceanic Airlines website

Oceanic-air.com reveals that following the crash of Flight 815, the airline has ceased operations.

Theories

  • Assuming that a plane is at cruising altitude after six hours of flight, and the pilot made no indication that the plane was being brought down for a crash landing, the plane had to be brought safely to the island. Consider the UA Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, there was hardly any fuselage left. All three pieces of Oceanic 815 were intact after impact. They may have been brought down slower than normal to ensure all three pieces landed on or near the island and to ensure there would be survivors. If Flight 815 were brought down on purpose, perhaps the breakup of the plane was accidental?

Interesting notation

  • Oceanic Airlines Flight 816 appeared in the 2003 thriller Code 11-14, which featured a terrorist and serial killer onboard, causing almost a crash of the plane by reprogramming the autopilot
  • Oceanic Airlines Flight 343, a Boeing 747-200, appeared in another thriller from 1996: Executive Decision

Notes

  1. The aircraft that was depicted in the crash, however, was an ex-Delta Airliens Lockheed Martin L-1011-1 Tristar.
  2. There are multiple backup systems for the transceiver on the 777.
  3. The 777 can take heavier turbulence than the human body can withstand. It is also fully automated with all manual backups.
