Mikhail Bakunin was a member of the Others and a former Soviet soldier found living in the Flame by Sayid, Kate, and Locke. ("Enter 77") He was later killed by Locke. Despite initially lying about being the last remaining member of the DHARMA Initiative, Mikhail remained surprisingly informative and often truthful until just before his demise. ("Par Avion")

Before the Island

Bakunin originally states that he grew up in Kiev and joined the Soviet Army, serving at some point as a soldier in Afghanistan and being familiar with field medical treatments. He also mentions being stationed at a military listening post in Vladivostok, as well as performing years of unpleasant actions in the service of the Soviet Union. In the early 1990s, his military unit was decommissioned and he was released from the Soviet Army. At the age of 24, he replied to a newspaper advertisement titled "Would you like to save the world?" and claims to have been recruited by a "magnificent man". He eventually ended up arriving on the Island around eleven years (circa 1993). Before he was revealed as being one of the Others, he had claimed he was a member of the DHARMA Initiative but later confessed that this was not true.

On the Island

Mikhail Bakunin on the Pearl station monitor

Mikhail was put in the charge of the Flame communications station by the Others after the Purge. He described himself as wanting to work alone like a lighthouse keeper, and the job at the station afforded him the opportunity.

When Locke, Sayid, Desmond, Nikki and Paulo visited the Pearl station, Sayid was able to rewire the live video surveillance feed to the upper-left monitor (monitor 1). Mikhail, wearing a Dharma Initiative uniform and an eyepatch, appeared. He looked directly at the camera, put his hand over the camera lens, and the signal from the camera was lost. In response, Locke said whimsically, "I guess he'll be expecting us." ("The Cost of Living")

Mikhail, after shooting Sayid outside The Flame

After 5 days, when Kate, Locke, and Sayid discovered the station, contact was made with Mikhail as its apparently sole inhabitant. After shooting Sayid in the arm, not knowing who he was, Mikhail presented himself as the "last surviving member of the DHARMA Initiative." Mikhail referred to the Others as "the Hostiles", and inferred that they had survived a war known as the "purge" with the DHARMA Initiative which had ended with the death of all members of the Initiative. Mikhail claimed that the "Hostiles" have been on the Island a very long time.

Later, Mikhail revealed that he had never been a member of the DHARMA Initiative, but one of the Others. Sayid and Kate tied him up, and went underground, in order to investigate the rest of the station. When he untied himself, he took Locke hostage holding a knife to his throat.

When Kate and Sayid returned, they held Bea Klugh, who was hiding underground, hostage. Klugh desperately shouted at him in Russian to kill her and himself, so the 815 survivors would never find Otherville. Mikhail was extremely reluctant, but conceded. He asked Klugh for forgiveness, then shot her in the chest.

Sayid and Locke quickly swooped in and subdued him, and Mikhail begged for them to "finish it". Sayid decided not to kill him, but to make him his prisoner. ("Enter 77")

Mikhail's dead body.

Bound at the wrists, Mikhail traveled with Kate, Sayid, Locke, and Rousseau to find the Others' home ("the Barracks"). During a discussion, Kate asked him why he would ever want to return to the Island if he left. He said that it was impossible for her to understand because she was not on the list. He then went on to detail specific reasons why Kate ("flawed"), Sayid ("frightened"), Rousseau("weak"), and Locke ("angry") were not on the list. Sayid challenged him, suggesting that he knew nothing about them. Mikhail responded by addressing each of them by their full names, which they had not told him. Mikhail then said sarcastically that he had no memory of Kate or Sayid, and that he had a memory of "a" John Locke, but that the John Locke he knew had been "para-"--at which point he was cut off by Rousseau.

Once at the barrack's security perimeter, Mikhail told the other members of the party that it was no longer was functional and that trying to circumvent the perimeter would be a waste of time, as it made a complete loop around the barracks. Without consulting Sayid or Kate, Locke pushed Mikhail between two of the perimeter's sensor pylons, which then began to emit a loud, high-pitched noise. Mikhail turned and smiled, thanked Locke for his action, and began to foam at the mouth while blood spouted from his ears. In short order, Mikhail fell backwards and collapsed, dead. ("Par Avion")

Possessions

Documents in Russian were seen at the Flame. A Russian language typewriter was also among the items at the Flame.

Mikhail has a cat named Nadia, named after Nadia Comaneci, a Romanian gymnast, who he calls "the greatest athlete the world has ever known." He also reveals that they share a birthday (November 12). Sayid recognizes the name Nadia as the name of the woman he once loved. He also thinks the cat bears a striking resemblance to the cat that belonged to a woman he once tortured as an Iraqi soldier and whose husband found him years later in Paris. ("Enter 77")

Translation

This conversation appears in "Enter 77" between Mikhail and Bea Klugh outside The Flame:

Original Russian

Klugh: Михаил. Михаил! Ты знаешь что делать.
Mikhail: У нас есть ещё выход.
Klugh: Мы не можем рисковать. Ты знаешь условия.
Mikhail: Есть другой выход.
Klugh: Они взяли нас. Мы не дадим им пройти на территорию.
Klugh: Ты знаешь что делать. Это приказ.
Mikhail: У нас всё ещё есть выход!
Klugh (по Английски): Just do it, Mikhail.
Mikhail: Прости меня. (стреляет)

English translation

Klugh: Mikhail. Mikhail! You know what to do.
Mikhail: We still have another way [out].
Klugh: We cannot risk it. You know the conditions.
Mikhail: There is another way.
Klugh: They captured us. We will not let them to get into the territory.
Klugh: You know what to do. That's an order.
Mikhail: We still have another way!
Klugh (in English): Just do it, Mikhail.
Mikhail: Forgive me. (shoots)

Trivia

  • Mikhail is of Slavic origin, and its meaning is "who is like God?".
  • The character is most likely named after the philosopher Mikhail Bakunin.
  • An early on-set name to describe the character, Patchy, was referenced by script coordinator Gregg Nations on the Fuselage forum.
  • Nations also confirmed that Mikhail is not Radzinsky and that Radzinsky is in fact dead.
  • "Mikhail" is the Russian equivalent of the English name "Michael".
  • His birthday is November 12 (11/12). 11+12=23.
  • Nadia Comaneci was born (11/12/1961). 11+12=23. 61-19=42
  • Mikhail is farsighted.
  • Appears to have some understanding of the Russian martial art Sambo (Combat variation), which was probably part of his military training.
  • Mikhail is the third character in the series to have begged to be killed at gunpoint (the first being Rousseau in "Maternity Leave" and the second being Bea Klugh earlier in the same episode ("Enter 77")).
  • In 1967 Nadia Comaneci joined a newly formed gym club, "The Flame"
  • According to the Official_Lost_Podcast/March_20,_2007 Mikhail's entire story was true except for the part about being in the DHARMA initiative.
