He attended Wind River High School in Pavillion, Wyoming and did post-graduate high school study at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. Fox subsequently attended Columbia University where he played football and majored in Economics with the intent to end up on Wall Street. His girlfriend's mother was a modeling agent who convinced him to try some modeling which led to a couple of TV commercials. Soon after he was sold on acting. Matthew then dedicated himself to studying acting for two years at The School for Film and Television in New York City. Fox's claim to fame was the role of Charlie Salinger, the eldest brother, in Party of Five. Fox has also guest starred in smaller parts for series such as Wings. He married Margherita Ronchi in 1992. • Is known as "Foxy" by fans.
  • Matthew Fox has at least four tattoos:
  1. On his left upper arm, near the shoulder: this tattoo contains the number 5 and Chinese characters. The tattoo reads "Eagles high up, cleaving the space" in Chinese, from a famous poem by Mao Zedong. The producers made a conscious decision not to cover this up, which Fox mentioned in the February 27, 2007 podcast.
  2. On his inside left forearm: this tattoo is composed of an abstract pattern of waves, flames, and stars in red and shades of blue. It too has never been covered up on the "present day" scenes of the show.
  3. On his back, visable in "Pilot, Part 1" briefly, and very prominate in the flashforwards of "Something Nice Back Home".
  4. On his inside right forearm: this tattoo is a monochromatic skull and crossbones pattern. Fox acquired it sometime before his Saturday Night Live hosting appearance in December 2006. It has subsequently been covered up with makeup on Lost.
  • Is a Philadelphia Eagles fan.[3]
  • Is a good friend of Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong.[source needed]
  • In We Are Marshall, William "Red" Dawson (Matthew Fox) stands in the gym watching head coach Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey) and University President Donald Dedmon (David Strathairn) repeatedly calling each other Jack and Doc, the two names Jack is called the most on Lost.
  • The second episode of his series Haunted bears some striking similarities to Lost themes. It revolves around a 4-piece English rock band, two of whom are brothers who have matching band rings, very much like Charlie. A reference to the term redshirt is made, and a character mentions that to get to a certain place, Matthew Fox's character needs to "follow the white rabbit".
  • Has been an avid chess player since his college days and plays both correspondence and over-the-board. [source needed]
  • Fox claims he is the only cast member who knows the ending of Lost.
