The new editor is totally optional. Experienced editors often find it easier to use wikitext, but the new editor is proving to be beneficial for new users who haven't yet learnt MediaWiki's markup. Angela 18:03, 17 December 2008 (PST)

The new main page is looks pretty good, it's just Wikipedia now. It takes a little longer to load right now but I'm sure that will get worked on. It'll be faster and the resources from the wikia will be nice for a fast fix when we need it. I don't like the little pictures they use however, I hope there's some way we can bypass them with little Lost pictures. Hi. The demo site is not as fast as the live site will be, so you should see improvements on that tomorrow. The default URL will be lostpedia.wikia.com, but the old URLs will redirect so that no links will break. Angela 18:03, 17 December 2008 (PST)

DerAndre, our apologies, we didn't get around to notifying all of the various language Lostpedias before the move, it happened a bit faster than we thought it would. What's with the format of the main page on the wikia test site for Lostpedia? It does not look good currently, because the page is sprawled out so you have to scroll to see the entire page. Is this just temporary? -- CTS Talk Contribs 18:10, 17 December 2008 (PST)

If you choose to use the new monaco skin, it will be that wide, but don't forget that the usual MediaWiki skins are available, and the lostbook skin will be available which will look just like this wiki (that's not live on the demo site yet). We'll also be developing a mixture of the two, so that you'll be able to have something that looks like lostbook but has the functionality of monaco. Angela 18:16, 17 December 2008 (PST)

My main concern about this change is that it will come as a surprise to many people, and they will react negatively to this sudden change. I've been a contributor both to Wikia wikis and Media wiki ones, and I have to admit that one of my favorite things about Lostpedia has been that it wasn't on Wikia. (And no - I'm not exaggerating) The Wikia layout absolutely suck, and it much less user-friendly. Just one example: I'm using a widescreen, resulting in the wikia banner and the Lostpedia Island panorama banner covering more than 1/3 of the screen - all the time!
I havn't been contributed that much on Lostpedia earlier, and this move really doesn't encourage me to participate more.
A misguided choice by the Lostpedia admins. Hopefully it won't show that much in the user contributions though... --Pierre 13:54, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

As long as the old Lostpedia skin is restored (right now I see just plane wikia skin) I find it acceptable. I still believe having a separate domain was one of Lostpedia's best features, which allowed to have more room for username space (my favorite nickname is already taken on wikia) as well as staying separate from lost.wikia.com. Going back to my problem with my sig I mentioned above; I think I might know the problem. I already have an account with Wikia on the other Lost site, where I do not have a custom made sig. I'm wondering if already having an account could affect why my sig won’t appear automatically. For the time being, I have found a way to get my sig, which is manually typing User:1LostFan/Sig and five ~ for the time to appear. Plkrtn, are you still having problems with your sig? I think it's taken your (blank) sig from your original Wikia preferences then. You can easily add one back at preferences. See Help:Signature. Angela (talk) 05:38, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Besides the obvious disadvantages (more ads, inappropriate ads, confusion regarding Lostpedia vs. Lost Wiki, hideaous layout, changed user-names, no chance for regular users to voice their thoughts on the matter prior to the move, trouble for foreign language Lostpedias, the fact that Lostpedia is no longer independent, et al.) I also can't look at individual edit changes. When clicking on "last" in the history of an article, I don't see the differences made from the earlier edit, but instead I get a request to open "index.php". Would it be possible to fix this.

I've managed to get my sig back. If anyone is having problem with their sig, this is what you do. Go to preferences, and go down to signature. Subdomains and Favicon

Two questions: 1) May our old site Lostpedia favicon be migrated? 2) We have one minor subdomain for our chat that needs fixing: bash.lostpedia.com should point to: http://danhm.net/logbook 3) Also, it would be nice if the subdomain forums.lostpedia.com redirected to forum.lostpedia.com. -- ^Contrib¯ _Santa_ ¯^Talk 06:49, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Is this the correct favicon? If so, it should start working automatically within the next day or 2. It is there, but it's not showing up to people who already visited the wiki as the yellow W one is cached, but that will soon clear. Miscellaneous

I agree with others that it would have have been great to be warned of such a change earlier. We woke up in France with a site notice wrote in a strange French and nothing to be editable. Moreover lostpedia is active but not its localized versions, when will it be ok (we're waiting for more 24 hours now) ? Please also corrects all FAQS, "LOST-" has been added in front of username, not "Lostpedia_" as mentionned. I also had some troubles with that, it seems there is an other Wyz on Wikia and the first time I thoudgh it was me so I asked a new password by mail (sorry for that mate)... I also have a lot a questions :

Who will be our contacts if we have some technical requests ? Still Admin ? Wikia's staff ? Depends on the request ?
On the French and Portuguese we were welcoming new users with a bot by checking the new user log but with Wikia we'll have to change that. How ?

If you have any requests, you can contact Wikia staff via Special:Contact, or leave a message for me on my talk page on any wiki. I'm not sure what the solution for the bot is as there won't be a new user log anymore. Is it possible to recognise red user talk pages on recent changes instead? Hi Angela - I've noticed a few things:

Anonymous edits are enabled. This was disabled on Lostpedia.
I apparently had a wikia account prior to this move so my username was renamed to LOST-Jabrwocky7. I'm sure others are in the same boat. Can you please have the user rename extension installed?
I don't see the extension for polldaddy polls installed. We use this for weekly polls on the main page.
I believe we had an interwiki link for Lostpedia on Wikipedia. This should get updated to the new main URL for the English site.

Not the same!!

Hi, i have used Lostpedia since it was first created and I believe joining wikia this wiki site has lost its independence and won't be the same again. Also the new look of the site is dreadful. Gosh! Hopefully the site admin will listen to the views of the users.

Agree. However it's only been a day and they are working hard on fixing all the problems. If it's still like this in a few days time then i'm definitely against this. The Wikia layout is dreadful too. Obviously the reason Lostpedia was one of the most successful and highly regarded wiki's was the users who edited it but almost as much so was it's "google like" simplicity, easy navigation, few ads and layout. The new layout leaves a lot to be desired. Now that the move has been made though, i seriously doubt they will go back. I must say that I agree the current site layout is hideous. The two advertisement boxes on the right skrinks the page layout. It's even worse when you aren't logged in. I think the advertisements should be somehow reformatted (I'm guessing that the Wikia staff would have to deal with that). Here's a specific critcism: I wanted to find out what Richard Malkin said to Mr. Eko about being a fraud psychic. I tried to look up the episode (which is "?") and on the main episode page, none of the episode names are listed. I went to Mr. Eko's entry and found the bit about Malkin in the text but when I clicked on the link to the episode, it's now in the format of "2x21" and....when you click the link it gives a "Page Not Found" message. If I may offer a constructive comment. I have a quibble about the ads - not about their presence, which, although mildly irritating, is unavoidable for a number of reasons. My problem is the content - I keep seeing one with a girl in a very low-cut top that says "Browse Girls". I just feel it's somewhat inappropriate for a site of this nature. - I agree with Lost_Soul. The ad with the girl in is very inappropriate. A few problems I have: the episode templates no longer work (but that is being fixed), logging in makes the banner at the top disappear (but I've read that a Lostbook skin is in the works), the crossrefs now take you to Wikipedia, although that's most likely because we need to fix the templates. Also, the line under subheadings on articles cuts right across the page and straight through the picture at the top, how do we fix this? I know it's early days yet so I'm not complaining too much. I'm sure once we get settled this site will be even better!--Baker1000 20:43, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
  - I've had some seriously bad experiences with Wikia on a different Wiki. The end result was that we separated from Wikia a few months ago, and have never looked back since. See here for what we had to endure, plus numerous other problems. Oh, and about 99% of our old contributors participated in the move. The old copy of our Wiki that remained on Wikia isn't updated nearly as much as the migrated one. Compare: 6,968 articles on the Wikia Transformers Wiki vs. 7,800 articles on the new TF Wiki.--87.164.71.40 00:35, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

On another note, one thing that I really am not happy about is users being able to contribute without creating a username, just using their IP (like the guy above, no offense). - Anonymous edits can be disabled again (see above for my comment on that). Some usernames start with LOST- because they clashed with existing names of other users on Wikia. For active users, please list yourself at the top of my talk page if you need to get your old name back. We will work on these renames once the imports are complete. Moving Non-English Lostpedias

Hi people, you know, this whole Wikia thing just got me with no warning and I am a little confused LOL. I am Sysop at the Spanish Lostpedia, by the way, and that page is my main focus in all this.

Today I finally noticed that the English and Deutsch LP ended the moving, and I wonder how long will it take to the Spanish domain to do that. We still are in reading mode and there's no sign of transition. I saw the links to the new non-Engislh Lostpedia Wikias, but the Spanish link (es.lostpedia.wikia.com) takes me to an obscure Spanish Lost Wikia with just 27 articles.

¿Will the old SP Lostpedia superimpose to that old Wikia domain? ¿How much more will we have to wait? ¿Which will be the page name?

Well, I hope you're still working on this because it has so many glitches that I don't know where to start from. The Ep Templates are just gone (along with most of the Main Page Templates), we have the Lost Wikia logo instead of the Lostpedia one, the PollDaddy code is not working, etc, etc.

Hey Calick - Try http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Customizing_Monaco for customising the skin... The easiest way to do this though, is to take our English skin from Mediawiki:Monaco.css and enabling the custom skins option on the skins tab of your preferences. Plkrtn 19:17, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Two LOST wikias?!

I don't understand this: We have LOSTPEDIA and LOST wikis? Look here for LOST: http://lost.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page. Don't we gonna have to mix both? We could have more editors. I really don't see the point for have both of them. PS: Lostpedia is pretty better :roll:

The two use different copyright licenses, so they can not be merged. It's up to the users of Lost.Wikia which one they want to contribute to. Nothing has changed since both wikis have existed for a long time and we hope the fact that Lostpedia is part of Wikia too now won't cause any problems for the other wiki which is not affected by this. This site uses Creative Commons by NC-ND as do a couple of other Wikis on Wikia. Lostpedia has been around for several years now and is the most visited Lost site on the web. Lost Wikia has been around for a while too. Nothing really changes for anyone other than the hosting for both sites are the same now. Oh and policy wise, Lostpedia is only updated to the point of broadcast, and we'll only release episode names once they've been confirmed in press releases by ABC. Whereas Lost Wikia allows some spoiler content. Its up to Wikia users which site you wish to use. We're all friends! :) Plkrtn 13:12, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Lost Wikia has actually been around quite a while, we've been around about two and a half months less than Lostpedia. Additionally, episode titles are the only spoiler content allowed on the Wikia, as we follow the same strict policy of banning for violating the terms of our spoiler policy. --ChristianShephard 14:09, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Edit Count

There's an interesting side effect here. Before Lostpedia joined Wikia, I had joined the Wikia Anathem project but had made no edits. After Lostpedia moved, my edit count on my Anathem preferences page jumped to over 2200 -- my number of edits on Lostpedia. When I made a test edit at Anathem several minutes ago, my Lostpedia edit count incremented.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 15:57, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

I guess the edit count function uses the server to find it cause it's a special feature, so therefore it counts your entire number of Wikia edits. Big deal? I mean before we didn't even HAVE the edit count function on Lostpedia. --Nickb123 (Talk) 16:27, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

The edit count at the top of Special:Preferences uses some strange math that doesnt quite work right at Wikia. I'm going to finally file a support ticket about it to get it fixed or hidden. The more accurate way to see your edit count is with Special:Editcount which will correctly show your edits on this wiki (and Wikia total). Oh, and you can append names to it, for links, like Special:Editcount/Uberfuzzy --Uberfuzzy 20:13, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

I didn't say it was a "big deal;" I said it was an "interesting side effect." We did and still do have an edit count. It appears on the user's preferences page. ES - Lostpedia needs help

It's Calick again and I'm asking for help because of serious problems with the moving of the Spanish site (ES- Lostpedia). As I haven't noticed any new changes in the site, I'm afraid it's going to stay like this. I am not familiarized with Wikia and I need help to fix these glitches, at least some of them which are essential. These are the following:

Firstly, I lost my Sysop status once I entered "es.lostpedia.wikia.com", despite my account moved to the new Wikia account. I can't fix the Main Page (which is chaos right now, go to see it) because it's protected. I need my Sysop status, and I am sure Frans, my partner, lost it as well (I can't contact him).

Page name changed. Now it's called "Perdidospedia" (because LOST means "Perdidos" in Spanish). Previously it was "ES - Lostpedia", but now everything related to that name changed. This is: all pages starting with that name are gone or renamed. Some templates in the Main Page begin with the "ES - Lostpedia" tag, like "ES - Lostpedia: Últimas Noticias" (the news template), renamed "Perdidospedia: Últimas Noticias". We want it like it was before, because we should rename lots of links and because LOST is known as Perdidos just in Spain. Most Latin American fans know the show by its original title.

The Lostpedia logo is gone, now we have the old Lost Wikia logo.

http://es.lostpedia.com doesn't redirect to http://es.lostpedia.wikia.com, like the other Lostpedias do. Maybe this indicates that the Wikia staff is still working with the page, but I am not sure, as I haven't noticed any changes within the last hours.

The standard commands of the new site, like "recent changes", "protected", "view source" are all in English, while in the original LP they were in Spanish. The whole site is in English in exception the articles we created, and we need it to be fully in our language, as far as it's possible.

The new Wikia command list in the left is also in English and it features random options, like "Flashback characters". We need it to be as in the English LP.

That's all I have by now. Sorry for so many complaints, but I guess this is usual when big changes like this are done. If anyone in the Wikia staff has time to help me without hurry, I'll be very grateful.

Thanks for the udpate Calick, hopefully we'll straighten this out very soon with Wikia's help. The Spanish Lostpedia is the biggest and most active of the non-English one, so we know it's important. Is sysop status still something that Lostpedia Admin can assign, or does it have to go through Wikia's engineer Tor? Also, Lostpedia Admin: Do you have a list of foreign language sysops? Just to clarify and make explicit, User:Sam McPherson has begun to compile a list of Lostpedia sysops across all languages at User:Sam McPherson/sandbox 2 for use by Wikia staff and Lostpedia Admin in 1) making sure they're opped, and 2) keeping lines of communication open since a help page does not appear to be set up for these other language wikis yet. In fact, we should go into the Mainpages of these other language wikis and add to their "Latest News" links to the relevant Wikia migration pages and help pages that we have here on the English side, esp. for those languages where the mainpage contents are not sysop-protected. I noticed the sidebar can be edited. Could you give me a link to a page explaining how to do that, please?
The special page of the categories is empty. Maybe (I don't know) the rest of the special pages are empty, too.
In the Main Page (the Portada) there is the "Portada" name at the top of the page. We also had this in the old Lostpedia, but now, the ad gives a sensation of more space occupied. ¿Could you erase the "Portada" name at the top of the page, please? We have no access to do that.

Problem Reports

I encourage everyone to utilize the "report a problem" link at the bottom of pages to report issues. Wikia has this system built-in and it let's us keep track of issues and mark them repaired. - The feature is available here. It's designed for readers to report errors in articles that they don't know how to fix themselves which is why it only appears on article pages and not on "lostpedia project" pages. One User's Opinion

This is simply my opinion. While it likely will not sway the argument because Lostpedia obviously needs money, I am stating it nonetheless. I do not like the cahnge over to Wikia. First of all, I have come to know and love the Lostbook feature. Now, that look is completely gone. The site has a completely redefined look, and not necessarily in a good way. I have to say, I'm not a big fan. Now I am know I am not one of the "bigwigs" in the Lostpedia universe, occasionally reading articles and editing when I see a grammar or factual error, but at the same time it makes me somewhat of a more objective observer. I understand why Lostpedia had to go to wikia (money--it makes the world go round these days), but Lostpedia should work to make the new site look as much as Lostpedia did a month ago. The main page alone looks a lot different. The whole "wikia" look is their signature look, not Lostpedia's. There is a definite difference, and not for the better. I'm sorry, but this is my honest opinion. Like I started this, I know my opinion is not going to sway the argument. Howeve, perhaps you can make the best of a not great situation? It's disappointing to see Lostpedia not remain independent, but I understand why. The way to make it up to your users and keep them coming back (afer all, isn't that the point?) is to make them think there isn't much of a difference. Right now, it's big. Your opinions *are* important. Addressing your comments: 1) This was the only way (short of spending probably close to $10K) we could avoid having the server overload and become totally unavailable as Season 5 began; most users are blissfully unaware that the traffic numbers really are unbelievable during the Lost season peaks! In this way we are helping keep the site up during these high load periods. 2) Lostpedia IS independent, and remains independent. This fact was very important to us and crucial to finalize our decision to move to Wikia. Editorially and administratively we are independent and this fact should not be confused with the huge amount of technical support required from Wikia during the migration. 3) Lostbook is ALSO important to us, and will be migrated, so don't worry. Username Bug

My old username was David, but someone on Wikia had that username, so I have been transferred over to LOST-David. However, on Lostpedia, there was no user of this name (so no userpage, discussion page, etc.) My old pages still exist and everything that did link to those pages still does (as in, my former signature, etc.) I have put messages up on my old userpage and discussion page, but is there anyway (a) I can get everything on Lostpedia (Lostpedia Wikia now?) that has my signature to just skip my old userpage and go straight to my new page (b) Simply redirect to my new userpage? I'm sure there is, I just am not adept in html/wiki source. Grammar and factual edits are more my thing. Thanks! Number of visits

How can we know the number of visits on a page ? With the migration, was the countdown of visits on each page reset to zero ? And will we be able to see the number of visits with the new Monaco custom skin ? User:Nicoco63/sig 16:48, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

The old page counter doesn't work because we use caches to speed up the site, which made that wildly inaccurate as not each visit registers a new hit on the counter. FR - Lostpedia reports

Ok, here are the troubles we're experiencing on French Lostpedia (which can be the same as yours) :

the poll is not working (I know it's being considered by Wikia)
two sysops (Castillo and Wyz) still have their name changed and the contributions didn't follow
- an other user (Alexis), who helps us sometimes, would also like to recover his name and contributions
~~we can't access the theory tabs on the top of the articles (the same for all LP but English one)~~
~~links are not the same blue as before~~
~~template:ep is not working, and so template:crossref (it seems to depend on ne number of parser functions call allowed but we used lot of them)...~~
~~interlanguage links are nor working (I reported it but no answer yet)~~

I've upped the parser function limit on fr.lostpedia to match the others, that should clear up any remaining problems with t:ep or t:crossreff. if you find a page where something is still broken, just resave the page, should clear up. if not, please let us/me know.

the link color is done via css, it likely came with the custom skin copied from here.

the interwiki language links are currently work as far as i can tell. we're looking into why they are sometimes being disabled. if you find a page where they are not working, please let us know.

Angela on Lostpedia's copyright status

I looked over at Talk:Main Page at Lost Wikia and found the following comment from Angela:

The page at Why use Wikia? explains some of the reasons to use this one instead. However, the main reason this one needs to exist is that Lostpedia has changed its license to cc-nc-nd. The nd part of that means no derivatives. Strictly speaking, if you create a page or add any content to Lostpedia, no one is legally allowed to edit that page ever again since doing so would create a derivative work. It's a non-sensical license for a wiki that is meant to be edited, and it makes the content unfree. Angela talk 22:11, 22 June 2007 (UTC) Has this been sorted out? I never knew this about Lostpedia.

Additionally, this is sort of a question for Angela but it relates to Lostpedia and Lost Wikia. Back in February Toughpigs from Wikia contacted me and asked: Hi, I was just looking at the Lost Spoilers Wiki. You've done a lot of work on it! Would you be interested in establishing it as a full wiki? Let me know, and I can help you get set up. Talk to you soon! I never really decided anything because I started the LSW two years ago as a way of circumventing Lostpedia's own spoiler policy, which was at the time cracking down and eventually banning spoilers altogether. I believe the license is referring to how information is taken from the site, rather than how it is edited within the site. In that, you can add to an article here, and build upon the information within, but if you take something from Lostpedia, you cannot change the wording or information. Still Slow

The Wiki is still extremly slow for me since the move to wikia. Pictures can take up to 5 minutes to load, text is sometimes quick but other times painfully slow and editing pages is the same. I had the same problume even after I switched all my bookmarks, but the very second I switched to Lostbook in the prefs. Everything is working just as good, if not better and faster. I wasn't even able to type without leg before and now my pages switch over as fast as I can press the "edit" button. Do you have a good computer? Because I have a ten year old computer that I forced Windows XP on and it works really slow, that with the wireless air card I use for internet makes using the internet for me a pain, but for some reason on LP it works as fast as I can say LP. It's less than 18 months old but that's not the problem, it's wikia as before the change it used to load instantly and i never have problems with any other sites i visit including wikipedia. It's just here. The forums are fine too. If it's just me though then it's obviously a problem on my end, unless it's happening for anyone else. If you have another browser, I suggest trying with that to see if it's faster. If it is, then clearing out your cookies and cache might help. Please let me know if you need any instructions on how to do that. Angela (talk) 13:33, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Angela. I tried to delete the cookies and cache, ran virus and spyware scans on Norton, did just about everything possible and still nothing to report. Same problem with other browsers when i tried Google Chrome. However judging by the lack of people reporting this problem then it's obviously a fault on my end and not the wiki. I can confirm this, as well as some other folks I talked to in the chat. Including myself these guys aren't accessing LP from within the US, so my assumption is that it's only slow for non-US users. If you used the same email address in both, they may have been merged. It looks to me like they have been as you can log in here as Nevermore. Searching

IT - Lostpedia

I need some help there.

First, can you change the sitename? Lostpedia Italia will be perfect.
I can get the new logo to work. I followed the instructions on Help:Wikia but it's not working.
I've been trying to get new sysop for years. Kevin was kinda busy and I was never a bureaucrat. Can you help me with that?
I hate my new username, but I don't really care for now :)
A couple accounts are not working. Also, I don't get how the accounts have been moved. I'm LOSTIT-Desmond now, but the old "Utente:Desmond", which I suppose belongs to someone else now, still claims all my contributes. How does that work? No big deal, just curious.
I'd love to have something like this on our wiki [1], since accents are so important in Italian. In the past I tried to implement it but eventually I failed. It's something about that menu thing. I actually need just the "Latino esteso" and "Wiki" parts.
Some "messages" are still in English. Do I just change them in "Speciale:Messaggi" and that's it?

I made some changes:

Sitename changed to "Lostpedia Italia" - please check if your project namespace works like expected (you may need to correct some links)
Logo fixed. You can change it now like expected by changing Wiki.png.

Typically user names from it.lostpedia which still existed at Wikia were moved to LOSTIT-username. Contributions: Will be fixed (should be fixed for EN, FR, DE already).
You can enable Endittools just by creating a specific MediaWiki message. See the german one for example.
You are able to translate most messages via Special:Allmessages. If your're translating generic messages and not Lostpedia specific ones, it would be great if you can keep track of the changes. So we're able to do the same changes globally for all italian wikis.

Bullets

Formerly on Lostpedia -- and currently on another, non-wikia project where I work -- bullets appeared on the left of the first line of multi-line text. Now they are vertically centered. This is not standard; why the change?--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 15:04, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

We are using the default bullet for Monaco. Lostpedia hasn't changed this item. No vertical centering happens, but there are some margins defined in the css and a hidden transparent section above the square. - I have to concur on that one. On a well-spaced PowerPoint briefing, center-aligned bullet is fine. On a tightly packed, listen to my opinion MW page, vcenter-bullet is a chore - having to scan down to the bullet, then think your way back up to find the first sentence of the paragraph... the last time I checked - we were Wikia's customer - we should do this the way we want and let them adapt monaco or mono to our standards. –DocH– my edits
