Previously on Lost
  +
*In 1867, before the crash of the Black Rock, Jacob and the Man in Black talk at the Statue of Taweret.. 5x16-17
At the Swan construction site in 1977, Jack awakens to find Kate pulling Sawyer away from the shaft that Juliet fell into. At the bottom, Juliet awakens, pinned beneath several tons of wreckage, and begins to cry. Seeing the Jughead core nearby, she grabs a rock and begins slamming it, yelling at it to go off. Finally, she appears to be successful, and a white flash envelops everything.

  +
* In 2007, within the statue ruins, the Man in Black, using the form of John Locke, tells Ben to kill Jacob. Ben submits and stabs Jacob twice. Jacob's last words are "they're coming", and then the Man in Black kicks him onto the fire. 5x16-17
  +
*In 1977, Daniel Faraday tells Jack and Kate of his plan to stop the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 from ever happening by detonating Jughead at the construction site of the Swan. 5x14
  +
*Sayid is shot by Roger Linus. At the construction site, Jack drops Jughead down the shaft. Electromagnetic energy sucks everything metal down it. Chains wrap around Juliet, and despite Sawyer's efforts to save her, she falls. At the bottom of the pit, she picks up a rock and hits Jughead eight times before it detonates. 5x16-17

Aboard a different Oceanic Flight 815, a different Jack Shephard gazes out the window at passing clouds (the wing is not visible, unlike the first time). Similar to the experience from the first episode, Cindy Chandler, a flight attendant, asks him how the drink is, then smiles when he admits it's not very strong. She gives him a small bottle of vodka and asks him to keep it between them (not 2 bottles, which occurred the first time).

  +
Inside the statue, the Man in Black (as Locke) picks up the bloodied knife Ben had used to stab Jacob. He tears off a piece of fabric from the floor and uses it to clean the knife. He tells a visibly disturbed Ben that he can stop staring at the fire and that Jacob is gone. Ben asks why Jacob didn't fight back. The Man in Black replies that Jacob must have known he was beaten and asks Ben to go outside and tell Richard that he needs to talk to him. Ben inquires as to what they have to discuss. The Man in Black states that it is between himself and Richard. ♪

  +
Meanwhile, outside, Ilana and Bram discuss entering the statue with Richard. Richard tells them firmly that they cannot go in and that only those summoned by Jacob may enter. Ilana replies that she and Bram were summoned to the island by Jacob, and thus should be allowed inside. Ben comes out of the statue and is immediately questioned by Ilana and Richard. When he informs Richard that Locke wants to speak with him, Richard becomes furious with Ben, and shoves him onto the beach next to Locke's corpse, revealing to Ben for the first time that Locke is indeed dead. ♪ Shortly after, Bram grabs Ben and hauls him back into the statue with him, despite Richard's protest. ♪
Suddenly, the plane begins shaking, and the Seth Norris announces that they're running into some turbulence ahead. Rose Nadler, the woman across the aisle, assures Jack that it's normal, and that her husband says planes are meant to be in the air. They chat for a while before the turbulence worsens, and Jack grips the armrests with an expectant look. However, the plane passes through, and Bernard Nadler returns safely from the bathroom.

  +

  +
Inside the statue, Bram along with Burnette, Wolfe and Salinger, enter Jacob's chamber and point their guns at the Man in Black. Bram asks him where Jacob is, to which the Man in Black responds that Jacob is dead, and, as such, they are all now "free." Upon hearing this, Bram and his men become enraged and fire several shots at the Man in Black. One shot appears to strike him, after which he disappears behind a column. As Bram investigates the room, he finds the bullet that was thought to have hit the Man in Black lying on the ground. Confused, he turns around, just as the Monster enters the room.
Jack gets up to go to the lavatory, and inspects himself carefully in the mirror, noticing a bleeding sore under his shirt collar. Going back to his seat, he meets a man named Desmond Hume in the seat next to him. Both characters struggle to remember whether they have met before. The view then shifts out the window and down into the ocean, where the remains of the Island are shown, now completely submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean and crusted over with sea life. Underwater, the DHARMA Barracks and Tawaret's four toed foot are visible.

  +

Jack heads to the forward lavatory, where a Edward Mars waits for his "friend." Kate Austen bursts out of the door and runs into Jack, apologizing before the Marshal hauls her back to her seat. Jack stares after them, fascinated by the woman.

  +
There is a brief firefight, but the Monster quickly overpowers three of the four men, killing them. Bram produces a container of ash which he proceeds to hurriedly spread around himself in a circle. This circle protects Bram from the Monster's direct advances towards him, so the Monster dislodges a chunk of rock from the statue interior, which knocks Bram out of the circle of ash. Bram, now vulnerable, is grabbed by the Monster and thrown through Jacob's loom where he is impaled on a piece of wood, and killed. ♪ During the entirety of the fight, Ben cowers in a corner, looking on in shock. At the conclusion of the fight, the Man in Black (once again as Locke) reappears behind Ben and states: "Sorry that you had to see me like that," thus definitively revealing the link between the Monster, the Man in Black, and post-Ajira Flight 316 Locke.

  +

Kate receives her meal, but the Marshal won't allow her a knife or fork. Just then, Sawyer brushes past the Marshal, and Kate hides her hands under her tray table, presumably to conceal her handcuffed wrists. Sawyer shares a meaningful look with Kate before apologizing and moving on. Sawyer goes back to his seat, where Leslie Arzt is pestering Hurley to do an impression of a character in his Mr. Cluck's commercial. Arzt finds it hysterical, then asks how a guy like him came to own a major corporation like Mr. Cluck's. Hurley replies that he won the lottery and happens to like chicken, leading a downcast Arzt to quickly excuse himself. Sawyer warns Hurley not to share his lottery win with strangers, saying it will make them try to take advantage of him, but Hurley brushes it off: he says he's the luckiest man alive.

  +
Ben, noticeably shocked, finally manages to ask the Man in Black, "what are you?" He only answers that he's not a "what" but a "who." ♪ The Man in Black then tells Ben that John Locke was very confused when Ben killed him and his last thought was "I don't understand." As Ben grapples with these revelations, the Man in Black goes on explaining how sad and pathetic Locke's life was. ♪ He continues that Locke's only redeeming virtue was to have been the only one of the Oceanic 815 survivors not to want to go back to their worthless pre-Island life, but rather to stay on the Island. He finishes his speech to Ben by reflecting on the irony of this situation, because unlike Locke, he wants to go "home." ♪

Smiling, Sun gazes at Rose and Bernard a few rows ahead; she tells Jin that they look so happy together. In response, Jin reminds her to button the top of her sweater.

The flares from the Temple are seen from the beach as Ben and the Man in Black leave the statue. The remaining Others lift their guns to shoot at the Man in Black but are promptly halted by Richard from taking action. Richard confronts the Man in Black, who responds to Richard that "it's good to see you out of those chains." Richard is stunned and replies "You?!," indicating some familiarity with who the Man in Black is. The Man in Black responds "Me," and knocks Richard out, hoisting him onto his shoulder. He turns to the rest of the Others, including Sun and Frank, and shouts angrily that he is "very disappointed with all of you," before making his way past the real John Locke's body. ♪

At the Swan and the Temple
John Locke reads a safety brochure, leading Boone Carlyle, sitting nearby, to say that it won't be any use if the plane goes down. John replies that a good pilot could negotiate a water landing, and the fuel tanks would keep survivors afloat until they were found. They strike up a conversation: Boone explains he was in Australia to get his sister out of a bad relationship, but she didn't want to come back with him. Locke says he went on a walkabout for ten days in the Australian outback, which greatly impresses Boone. Boone remarks that if the plane does crash, he'll stick with Locke.

  +
Out of the white, Kate's eye opens. Upon awakening, she nearly falls from the tree branch she's on, which is a considerable distance from the ground. She climbs back onto the branch. Her hearing is muffled. She yells and then shakes her head and messes with her ears but her hearing does not return. She climbs down out of the tree. The only sounds are those of her breathing, a high pitched ringing sound and her shuffling down the tree. She yells, "Hello?" and her hearing finally returns. She finds Miles who is also having trouble hearing, "I can't hear you! Are your ears ringing?" and he is talking louder than normal. Kate sees the broken airlock entrance to the Swan station but couldn't open it realizing they're back in 2007. They trek back to the Hatch to find it completely obliterated, as it was after Desmond turned the fail-safe key three years before - making it clear they are now in the present time. Kate sees both Jack and Sawyer lying in the grass. She chooses to go to Jack's aid. Jack shakes his head and wakes up. Sawyer kicks him and he falls down into the hatch hole. Kate climbs down into the hole and Sawyer yells at Jack, "You were wrong!", clearly furious the attempt to detonate the Jughead in 1977 only resulted in them returning to the present. Kate tries to hold him back.

  +

Cindy makes an announcement asking for any doctors on board to press their call buttons, and eventually comes over to ask Jack for help: one of the passengers has been in the lavatory for half an hour and is no longer responding to any knocks. With the help of Sayid, they force open the door to find Charlie Pace, who is sitting unconscious on the toilet. Jack can tell that something is blocking his airway and cannot reach it, he then tries to use the pen in his pocket to perform a tracheotomy and realizes it is mysteriously gone. After a few minutes, Jack and Sayid manage to clear his airway, which was blocked by a baggie of heroin, and revive him. However, he isn't happy when he realizes that his drugs have been found.

  +
Hurley and Jin wake up next to a DHARMA van with Sayid, who is bleeding from the bullet wound in his stomach. Jin steps out of the van. Hurley points out that the sky turned from day to night. Jin informs Hurley he has just found a flashlight. Jin explains that they must have time-traveled, as it was similar to his own previous experience. At the remains of the Swan Station, Jack concludes that the bomb must have gone off, but Sawyer yells back that they wouldn't still be here if a nuclear explosion had occurred. Juliet is suddenly heard screaming from underneath the amassed wreckage. The survivors attempt to move the wreckage, but there is an I-beam blocking the way. Sawyer orders Jin to return to the van in order to use it to lift the I-beam away. ♪ Meanwhile, at the van, Hurley is tending to Sayid when Jacob appears from the Jungle. ♪ He tells Hurley that he died an hour ago. Jacob then tells Hurley he needs to take Sayid and the guitar case he had given him previously to the Temple. ♪

As Charlie is led in handcuffs to his seat, he angrily tells Jack that he was supposed to die. Jack returns to his seat, and notices that Desmond has gone missing. Rose and Bernard, having been asleep, don't know where he is, nor do they remember anyone sitting next to him. They buckle up as the plane begins its descent into Los Angeles. Sayid looks at a photo of Nadia, while Jin inspects the watch he is supposed to deliver. Finally, the plane touches down; police come to escort Charlie away, while the others gather their belongings and disembark. Jack and Locke are the last two passengers on the plane, and Jack watches as two airline employees bring a wheelchair onboard and lift an apparently paralyzed Locke into it.

  +
Jin, together with Hurley and the injured Sayid, return to the Swan where they manage to remove the wreckage covering Juliet. ♪ Sawyer climbs into the hole beneath the wreckage and briefly talks to Juliet. ♪ Juliet mumbles something about getting coffee sometime and smiles as she says, "We can go dutch." She then seems to realize where she is, and her last words are "I have to tell you something; it's really really important." She then dies from her injuries. ♪♪

  +
Sawyer vows to Kate that he will kill Jack for being responsible for her death. After tending to Sayid, Jack realizes that he will die, until Hurley tells them that Jacob told him that they can save Sayid by bringing him to the Temple. Jack asks, "Who's Jacob?", but Hurley responds that it's not iportant at that moment. The group leave for the Temple -- guided by Jin -- and leave Sawyer and Miles behind to bury Juliet. ♪ After she is buried, Sawyer orders Miles to communicate with her, in order to find out what important news she wanted to give him. After a brief commune with Juliet, Miles tells Sawyer her message: "It worked." ♪
After landing, Jack is paged to come to the Oceanic desk where he is told that Oceanic Airlines can not find his father's coffin that was checked in the cargo hold. Jack is clearly upset and is back and forth on the cell phone with his mother, who apparently has told Jack she had never wanted to hold the funeral that quickly (in two hours) and we hear Jack say he just wanted to get it over.

Jin and Sun attempt to go through customs and the officials are frustrated at their language barrier. They find the watch Jin is transporting, and, failing to understand it is a business gift continue to search his bag. Finding a pouch containing stacks of undeclared cash, they lead Jin away for questioning. An attendant advises Sun that if she knows some English and can explain it would clear things up, but Sun feigns not to understand.

  +
The remainder of the group make their way to the Temple. ♪ The group enters the temple via a hole at the base of the wall. Inside they find a skeleton missing an arm (Montand) and take the skeleton's book, a French copy of Søren Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling. ♪ While making their way through the tunnels beneath the Temple, Kate and Jack hear whispers just before the entire group is captured by the Others. This group of Others takes the captured group to the Temple. ♪ There, they meet Dogen, the Japanese leader of this particular group, who talks through his interpreter Lennon. Cindy informs her fellow Others that Hurley and crew were on Oceanic 815, as she was. She doesn't seem at all flustered when Dogen orders them to be shot. Hurley quickly tells Dogen that Jacob sent him and told him to bring the guitar case. The guitar case is opened, revealing a large wooden ankh which Dogen promptly smashes. ♪ Hidden inside the ankh is a piece of paper. Dogen reads it and asks for each of their names. ♪ Hurley demands to know what the paper says and Lennon tells him that the Temple dwellers will all be in trouble if Sayid dies. ♪

  +

Jack meets Locke in a small office while waiting for news of the coffin. Locke's bag containing the knives was misplaced and he finishes up filling out the paperwork. Jack tells Locke Oceanic lost his father because they can't locate his coffin. Locke tells Jack Oceanic has no idea where Jack's dad is; the airline lost his dad's body, not his dad. Seemingly grateful to hear this perception of the ordeal, Jack notices Locke's conditions and offers him a free consultation, gives him his business card and holds the door open for Locke to wheel out.

  +
The Others bring Sayid into the Temple, where a large spring bubbles in the center, Lennon comments that the spring is not running clearly. Dogen approaches the water, cuts his hand and then submerges it in the water, noting that the water did not heal it. ♪ After informing Jack that there are risks, Dogen orders his followers to submerge Sayid in the water and turns over an hourglass. As Sayid appears to be revived, Dogen refuses to allow his followers to lift Sayid out of the water until the timer is finished. It soon appears that Sayid is drowning. Jack protests but when he tries to stop them he is prevented. After the last sand grains fall, Sayid is lifted lifeless from the water. Dogen announces to the shocked group that "your friend is dead." Jack tried vainly to perform CPR. ♪ Dogen leaves the survivors alone to mourn Sayid. ♪ Later, Cindy enters along with Zack and Emma, the children from the tail section, bringing the survivors some food. Miles and an unconscious Sawyer are also brought to the Temple at this point, after being captured by Others in the jungle.

  +
Hurley visits Dogen, where it is revealed that he understands English, but refuses to speak it as he dislikes "the way it tastes on my tongue." After a brief conversation, Hurley reveals that Jacob is dead, which shocks Dogen and Lennon who rush out of the room. The two issue orders to the rest of the Others, who hurriedly pour lines of ash around the Temple, barricade the entrances, and launch a rocket flare. Lennon reveals that they are not keeping the survivors in, but rather keeping "him" out. ♪♪
Meanwhile Kate talks the marshal into letting her go to the bathroom, where she attempts to pick the handcuffs with a pen, that she pickpocketed from Jack during their encounter outside the lavatory. When the marshal discovers the spring to the pen on the floor, he demands she come out and Kate shoves him down and he hits his head on the sink and passes out. Kate escapes with the marshall's gun, but is seen by ladies who enter the restroom and call for help as Kate tells them that he had tried to attack her. Kate runs into an elevator, and finds Sawyer inside. Sawyer notices her handcuffed wrists, despite Kate's attempt at concealment with the marshal's coat Kate stole after knocking him unconscious. Two TSA employees come on the elevator and are alerted there's been a security issue. Sawyer presumes Kate is involved, and the next time the elevator opens, Sawyer holds the door and says "ladies first" so that Kate can get away before the TSA employees realize who they're looking for. Once out of the elevator and in baggage claim, Kate notices airport employees looking for the marshal's attacker. Kate sneaks into an employee's only area. From there, Kate runs outside and tries to get a cab. She is told by an angry Neil (Frogurt) that there is a line, and Kate gets in line behind Hurley. She eventually hops in the back of someone else's cab. When the cab driver says he already has a passenger, Kate pulls a gun on him and tells him to drive. Sitting beside Kate in the back seat of the cab is Claire.

♪ He tells Kate that he doesn't plan to kill Jack, because "he deserves to suffer on this rock just like the rest of us." ♪♪♪ Lennon enters and asks to speak with Jack in private, but Jack argues and scuffles with several of the Others. The fight is interrupted when all present are shocked to see Sayid sit up, very much alive. He pauses, confused, and asks, "What happened?"

Flash sideways
Following the incident, Jack drops the bomb into the hole, but nothing happens. Juliet's hand slips from Sawyer's and she falls down the hole and then detonates the bomb. Everything goes white.

Out of the white, Kate's eye opens. The sound is muffled, she falls, but grabs on. She's in a tree, and climbs back onto the tree. She yells and then shakes her head and messes with her ears. She climbs down out of the tree. She yells, "Hello?" and it echoes. She finds Miles. They trek back to the Hatch to find it completely obliterated, as it was after Desmond turned the fail-safe key in the season 2 finale. Kate sees both Jack and Sawyer lying in the grass. She chooses to go to Jack's aid. Jack shakes his head and wakes up. Sawyer kicks him and he falls down into the hatch hole. Kate climbs down into the hole and Sawyer yells at Jack, "You were wrong!". Kate tries to hold him back.

Hurley and Jin are next to a Dharma van with Sayid, who is bleeding from the bullet wound in his stomach. Jin steps out of the van. Hurley points out that the sky turned from day to night. Jin imforms Hurley he has just found a flashlight. He also adds that they must have time-traveled, as the experience was very similar. At the remains of the Swan Station, Jack concludes that the bomb must have gone off, but Sawyer yells back that they wouldn't still be here if the bomb had actually gone off. Juliet is suddenly heard screaming from underneath the amassed wreckage. The survivors attempt to move the wreckage, but there is a huge bar blocking the way. Sawyer orders Jin to return to the van in order to use it to lift the bar away. Meanwhile, at the van, Hurley is tending to Sayid when Jacob appears from the Jungle. He tells Hurley that he died an hour ago. Jacob then tells Hurley he needs to take Sayid and the guitar case (which he gave to Hurley in the previous episode) to the Temple.

Jack gets up to go to the lavatory, and inspects himself carefully in the mirror, noticing, to his confusion, a small bleeding cut on his neck. ♪ Going back to his seat, he meets a man named Desmond Hume, who switched to the seat next to him while Jack was in the bathroom. Jack struggles to remember whether they have met before, but neither can place it. The view then shifts out the window and down into the ocean, where the remains of the The Island are shown, now submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean. Underwater, the remains of the DHARMA Barracks and security fence are visible, and a DHARMA shark is seen swimming near Statue of Taweret four-toed foot, revealing the island's submergence. Jack heads to the forward lavatory, where Edward Mars waits for his "friend." Kate Austen bursts out of the door and runs into Jack, apologizing and taking his pen before the Marshal hauls her back to her seat.
Jin, together with Hurley and the injured Sayid, return to the Swan where they manage to remove the wreckage covering Juliet. Sawyer climbs into the hole beneath the wreckage and briefly talks to Juliet, whose last words are "I have to tell you something important". She then dies from her injuries. Sawyer vows to Kate that he will kill Jack for being responsible for her death. After tending to Sayid, Jack realizes that he will die, until Hurley tells them that he can help. The group leave for the Temple - guided by Jin - and leave Sawyer and Miles behind to bury Juliet. After she is buried, Sawyer orders Miles to communicate with her, in order to find out what important news she wanted to give him. After a brief commune with Juliet, Miles informs Sawyer that the news was "It worked".

The remainder of the group make their way to the Temple and enter via a hole at the base of the wall. Inside they find a skeleton missing an arm (one of Rousseau's companions) and take the skeleton's book/notebook. While making their way through the tunnels beneath the Temple, the survivors are captured one by one in the darkness by the Others. This group of Others take the captured group to the Temple proper, where they are introduced to Dogan, the Japanese leader of this particular group, who talks through his interpreter Lennon. Cindy informs her fellow Others that Hurley and crew were on Oceanic 815, as she was. She doesn't seem at all flustered when Dogan orders them to be shot. Hurley quickly tells Dogan that Jacob sent him and told him to bring the guitar case. The guitar case is opened, revealing a large wooden ankh which Dogan promptly smashes. Inside the ankh is hidden a piece of paper, which must have the survivors names written on it, as Dogan asks for their names. Hurley demands to know what the paper says and Lennon tells him that the Temple dwellers will all be in trouble if Sayid dies.

Kate receives her meal, but the Marshal won't allow her a knife or fork. Just then, James "Sawyer" Ford brushes past the Marshal, and Kate hides her hands under her tray table, presumably to conceal her handcuffed wrists. Sawyer shares a meaningful look with Kate before apologizing and moving on. Sawyer goes back to his seat, where Leslie Arzt is pestering Hugo "Hurley" Reyes to do an impression of a character in his Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack commercial. Arzt finds it hysterical, then asks how a guy like him came to own a major corporation like Mr Cluck. Hurley replies that he won the lottery and happens to like chicken, leading a downcast Arzt to quickly excuse himself. Sawyer warns Hurley not to share his lottery win with strangers, saying it will make them try to take advantage of him, but Hurley brushes it off: that can't happen, Hurley replies, because he's the "luckiest man alive."

Smiling, Sun-Hwa Kwon gazes at Rose and Bernard a few rows ahead; she tells Jin-Soo Kwon that they look so happy together. Jin tells her to button the top of her sweater.
The Others bring Sayid into the Temple, where a large spring bubbles in the center, Lennon comments that the spring is not running clearly. After informing Jack that there are risks, Dogan orders his followers to submerge Sayid in the water. After several minutes, in which it appears that Sayid is revived but then drowned, the Others bring him out. Dogan announces to the shocked group that "your friend is dead". He leaves the survivors alone to mourn Sayid. Sawyer and Miles are also brought to the Temple at this point, after being caught in the jungle. Cindy enters along with Zach and Emma, the children from the tailsection, and asks them to give the survivors some food.

Hurley visits Dogan, where it is revealed that he understands English, but refuses to speak it as he dislikes "the way it tastes on my tongue". After a brief conversation, Hurley reveals that Jacob is dead, which shocks Dogan and Lennon who rush out of the room. The Others are suddenly panicked, and lay the black powder around the Temple as well setting off rocket flares, which are seen from the beach. They reveal that they are not keeping the survivors in, but rather keeping "him" out.

John Locke reads a safety brochure, leading Boone Carlyle, sitting nearby, to say it won't be any use if the plane goes down in the ocean. John replies a good pilot could negotiate a water landing, and the fuel tanks would keep the plane afloat until the survivors could get onto the life rafts. They strike up a conversation: Boone explains he was in Australia to get his Shannon Rutherford out of a bad relationship, but she didn't want to come back with him. Locke says he went on a walkabout for ten days in the Australian outback, which greatly impresses Boone. Boone remarks if the plane does crash, he'll stick with Locke. Neil "Frogurt" is sleeping in the seat next to Locke, between him and Boone. ♪

While trapped in the Temple, Lennon wants to speak with Jack in private but Jack argues and fights several of the Others, they suddenly stop and turn to see Sayid, sitting up and very much alive. He pauses, confused, and says "What happened?" (Notice that he spoke in an accent distinctly different from his own. It was closer to Jacobs voice.)

Cindy makes an announcement asking for any doctors on board to press their call buttons, and eventually comes over to ask Jack for help: one of the passengers has been in the lavatory for half an hour and is no longer responding to any knocks. With the help of Sayid Jarrah and a flight attendant, they force open the door to find Charlie Pace sitting unconscious on the toilet. Jack can tell something is blocking his airway and cannot reach it. He tries to use the pen in his pocket to perform a tracheotomy but realizes it is mysteriously gone. After a few minutes, Jack and Sayid manage to clear his airway, which was blocked by a baggie of heroin, and revive him. However, he is very displeased with Jack when he discovers himself alive. Sayid looks at a photo of Noor "Nadia" Abed Jaseem as other passengers move their seats upright and buckle their seat belts. The plane touches down and pulls safely into the gate. Once there, police come to escort Charlie away, Boone shakes hands with Locke before leaving, Rose and Bernard disembark very much happy as a couple, followed shortly by Sun and Jin whom both appear very unhappy. Kate leaves in handcuffs with Edward, leaving Jack and Locke are the last two passengers on the plane. He tears off a piece of fabric from the floor and uses it to clean the knife. He tells a visibly disturbed Ben that he can stop staring at the fire and that Jacob is gone. Ben asks why Jacob didn't fight back. Jacob's Nemesis replies that Jacob must have known he was beaten and asks Ben to go outside and tell Richard that he needs to talk to him. Meanwhile, outside, Ilana and Bram discuss entering the statue, Richard tells them firmly that they cannot see Jacob. Ilana replies that she and Bram where brought to the island by him. Ben comes out and is immediately set upon by Ilana and her men, after a brief discussion she orders her men to enter the room with Ben. Inside, the four men including Bram enter the room and point their guns at Jacob's Nemesis. They ask him where Jacob is, and upon informing them that Jacob is dead, they become enraged and fire several shots at Jacob's Nemesis. One shot appears to strike him, after which he disappears behind a column. As one of the men investigates the room, he finds the bullet that was thought to of hit Locke lying on the ground. Ben cowers in the corner before going to leave, however, Jacob's Nemesis (once again as Locke) reappears behind him and states that he is "Sorry that you had to see me like that," thus revealing the link between the Monster, Jacob's Nemesis, and the post-Ajira 316 Locke.

Kate escapes with the marshal's gun and coat, but is seen by two women who enter the restroom and call for help as Kate tells them that he had tried to attack her. Kate runs into an elevator, and finds Sawyer inside. Sawyer notices her handcuffed wrists, despite Kate's attempt at concealment with the marshal's coat. Ganson and Calhoun, two TSA employees, come on the elevator and are alerted there's been a security issue. Sawyer correctly presumes Kate is involved. The next time the elevator opens, Sawyer holds the door and says "ladies first" so that Kate can get away before the TSA employees realize who they're looking for.
The flares from the Temple are seen from the beach as Ben and Nemesis leave the statue. Richard confronts them and Nemesis says that it is good to see "you without your chains". Richard is stunned and replies "You?!", Nemesis promptly knocks Richard out and hoists him onto his shoulder. However, Jack says he just wanted to get it over with soon, and explains the rest of the situation to her. Jack meets Locke, who is finishing up filling out paperwork on his Locke's knives, which the airline has also misplaced. Jack tells Locke Oceanic lost his father because they can't locate his coffin. Locke tells Jack Oceanic has no idea where Jack's dad is; the airline lost his dad's body, not his dad. Seemingly grateful to hear this perception of the ordeal, Jack notices Locke's condition and asks him about it. "My condition is irreversible," Locke says. "Nothing is irreversible," Jack replies, demonstrating a noticeably different attitude than the Jack who boarded Oceanic 815 in the regular timeline. * Shortly before the camera reveals the foot of the Statue of Taweret underwater, there is a DHARMA logo visible on the tail of the shark that swims by.
General
  +
* Claire, Shannon, Michael, Walt, Nikki, Paulo, Scott, Steve, Sullivan, and other characters from previous seasons known to be on board Oceanic 815 were not seen on the plane in the flash-sideways timeline. Boone speaks about Shannon and Claire is seen in the cab Kate hijacked at LAX. Claire's presence on the flight is implied in the next episode 6x03, and finally confirmed in 6x14
*Damon and Carlton promised that a new device would be introduced at Comic-Con. This appears to be the "flash sideways" (as Carlton Cuse calls them) to a timeline where 815 never crashed introduced in this episode.

  +
* Desmond is seen by Jack on the flight, but in the original timeline he was on the Island, working at the Swan Station. Desmond is wearing a wedding ring, though this is a continuity error since in 6x11 he was not wearing one.
* Cindy, Zach and Emma appear for the first time since the Season 3 episode "The Brig".

  +
* Ana Lucia, Eko and Libby, as well as Zack and Emma, who were all in the tail section, were not shown to be on the flight.
* Claire appears for the first time outside of stock footage since Season 4's episode 4x13, after a 17 episode absence.

It is highly unlikely this is a Lost-related shoot.
*The flashback "whoosh" is different this season. It is similar to the time flashes of season 5.

  +
*One of the Ankhs the four-toed statue was holding is now visible to its right, underwater.
*Unusually, there was no guest cast list given before the airing of the episode in the ABC press releases, to avoid spoiling the episode.

*When Jack is successful in reviving Charlie on Flight 815, his first words are, "Am I alive?". This is the same message actor Dominic Monaghan had scrawled on his palm in black marker that he held up to the audience at Comic Con 2009.
* As of this episode, Jack and Kate are the only character to appear in every season premier of the series.

  +
*When Arzt asks Hurley to do the Australian accent from the commercial, this is a reference to the Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack commercial also shown at Comic Con 2009.
*Sayid's passport, shown at LAX, is an Iranian passport instead of being Iraqi.

  +
*The police code "341" heard in the elevator is "Discharging Firearms".
* This is the second and only season premier to pick up directly where the previous season final left off, from someone else's POV, in this case Jack. The other being season 2, from Desmond's POV. Season 3, 4 and 5 all started out in a different time period.

  +
*The customs officer, Agent Anne, who asked Sun if she spoke English, referred to her as "Miss Paik" instead of "Mrs Kwon". It's not until 6x10 that it is revealed that Sun and Jin are indeed not married in the flash-sideways timeline.
* Michael Dawson and Walt Lloyd are not shown--perhaps because they are not on the plane in this alternate timeline, or perhaps because both are one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Walt is 10 in 2004 so the role would have to be played by someone else since he would be 16 in 2010.

  +
* These episodes are Rated TV-14-LV.
* The first episode of season 1 and 6 starts from Jack's POV.

  +
* The episode aired on Groundhog Day.
* This is the first season premier since the Pilot where Jin actually appears with speaking lines. He did not appear in season 2,3 and 5's opening episodes, and had no lines in season 4's opener. Making him the only original cast member credited in all seasons to appear the least in season premiers.

  +
*After Sayid supposedly drowns in the Temple water, Miles is seen looking at his body strangely, which Hurley takes note of. This is foreshadowing the fact that Sayid is not actually dead, since Miles was most likely wondering why he couldn't hear Sayid's last thoughts before drowning.

Hurley and Rose appear to have the same characters next to them as in the original flight. "Tailie 16" appears on the flight, and Nancy appears in the airport.
  +
* On versions of the episode where it is split into two parts (non-U.S.), three scenes are shortened for timing issues. These scenes are:
  +
** When Ben is staring at the fire and Locke tells him to stop looking at it, since Jacob is gone, it jumps right to the part where John tells Ben to go get Richard.
  +
** Where Ben is staring at Locke's corpse on the beach the scene starts with the part in which Bram drags him to to see Jacob.
  +
** During the closing montage of Part 1, when the 815 passengers get off the plane, shots of Sawyer and Hurley exiting are removed.
  +
*** In addition, the background music is slightly sped up in this scene. In the version that originally aired (as well as the DVD version), Giacchino's score is timed to where a note on the piano is played precisely when Jack looks at Locke, as he's being helped into his wheelchair. In the since edited versions, including Netflix, the music and the on-screen action don't sync up.
  +
** In addition, the opening scenes of Part 2 were moved around slightly. The flash-sideways where Jack is called away from the customs queue to the courtesy desk is moved later into the episode so that it does not appear in the teaser. This creates a continuity error with Kate's scene.
  +
* An audio commentary for Part 1 by producers/writers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse is available for this episode on the Season 6 DVD.
  +
** According to the commentary, the scene when Sawyer and Juliet are under the wreckage of the Swan had to be filmed again. The original film was ruined, so Elizabeth Mitchell was asked to come back from Vancouver to film the scene a second time.

* When Jack walks to the plane's restroom, he passes a bulkhead wall with a call-button device visible on it. When he watches Kate and marshal Edward Mars return to their seats, they enter the same bulkhead row, but no call-button device is visible on the wall.
  +
* Mars took a fork and knife away from Kate. Silverware would not be allowed on a plane after 9/11. Later on the plane, the stewardess says that there are no sharp items on the plane because of regulations.
  +
* When Sayid is lowered into the spring, his bullet hole is gone.

* When Sayid is removed from the spring, his hair is soaking wet. Just a few seconds later, when he's being laid on the ground, his hair is much drier.

* When Sayid is removed from the spring, his hair is soaking wet. Just a few seconds later, when he's being laid on the ground, his hair is much drier.
  +
* When Sayid is being taken down the steps in the temple to the water, a background extra removes the stretcher twice between shots.

*When Sawyer finds Juliet at the Swan site, her hands move into various positions between shots, though she is obviously unconscious at the time.

  +
* Oceanic 815 is supposed to be a Boeing 777. The approaching scene showed a correct 777, however:
* The door to the stall Kate is in at LAX is the only stall with a hinge that allows the door to swing out (piano hinge along the outside)

  +
** The sequence where you can see the landing gear on touch down shows four wheels on the main landing gear. A Boeing 777 has six wheels.
* The seat layout inside flight 815 is 3-4-3 and it is only available in B747 or A380. But when it lands on LAX, it is a twin engine plane which resembled a B777 or A330.

  +
** The plane approaching the gate has four engines (you can see the engine shadows). The actual plane at the gate is an Airbus A340.
* Sayid tells Hurley that he has tortured more people than he can remember. In the episode Enter 77, Sayid said that he can remember every face of every person he interrogated.

* When Charlie is beign taken from the plane by policemen, he looks left to Jack and all the passengers are facing him. In the next image, Jack looks right, but all the passengers faced opposite.
+
* When Charlie is being taken from the plane by policemen, he looks left to Jack and all the passengers are facing him. In the next image, Jack looks right, but all the passengers faced opposite.
  +
* Jack is carrying one side of the stretcher up until the time when Kate moves out of sight under the Temple wall. When Jack becomes concerned for her, he grabs the flashlight from Hurley and goes after Kate. However, he may have set the stretcher down off screen, while the camera panned in the direction Kate went.
* When Sayid is being taken down the steps in the temple to the water, a background extra removes the stretcher twice between the shots.

  +
* When Hurley and the others enter the tunnel under the Temple, after Hurley says "this is gonna be awesome," a can of soda can be seen on a ledge behind Kate's torch.
  +
*When Sawyer throws Miles over Juliet's grave to "talk to her," Miles' face is covered with dirt. In the next shot his face is clean.
  +

  +
* At 25:14 into "LA X, Part 1," when Hurley is backing up the DHARMA van to the hatch site, a Kino Flo Diva-Lite can be seen to the right of the van helping to light the scene.
  +
* In countries outside of the US, where this episode is broadcast as two separate episodes (i.e. two lots of credits) a scene change creates a continuity error in Part 2. The flash-sideways where Jack is called away from the customs queue to the courtesy desk is moved later into the episode so that it does not appear in the teaser. This means that Kate's flash-sideways scene at the customs desk is shown first, and she escapes shortly after. However, in Jack's scene, Kate is still waiting in line with the Marshal and being directed to the desk, where her scene should continue from.
  +
* In the airport bathroom scene where Kate kicks out the door to knock out the Marshal, you can see that the door to her stall has been modified so that the door opens outwards; however, in the next shot you will see that all the other doors in the washroom open the normal way, inwards.
  +
* After Ben stabs Jacob in the season five finale 5x17 his shirt is covered in blood; yet in this episode, just minutes later, there are no blood stains on Ben's clothes.
  +
* When Hurley yells at Jack as Sayid wakes up, one of the Others Jack is fighting immediately spins around to look at Sayid even though he would not have known right away why Hurley yelled.
  +
* The imploded hatch is noticeably different to when it is first shown imploded in 3x03.
  +
**The exercise bike from the hatch can be seen as Sawyer is climbing down the hole to get Juliet. However, in previous episodes after the explosion of the hatch, the bike can be seen lying in the jungle.
  +
* When Charlie is arrested after he says "You should have let that happen," and walks off to the right of Jack, and then he says "I was supposed to die," right back in front of Jack.
  +

  +
* Sayid is shown with an Iranian passport, even though he is Iraqi and he states so on the customs declaration form that is also shown. His date of birth is also given on the form as April 25, 1972, even though according to Sayid, he was 23 years old in 1990 during the Gulf War. It is conceivable he was traveling under a false passport, except he states his real name on the form.
  +
* Sayid's customs form depicts the logo of the old United States Customs Service, which was replaced in March 2003 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The U.S. Customs and Border Projection uses the logo of its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security. Updated forms would have been used by September 2004.

"LA X, Parts 1 & 2" are the first and second episodes of Season 6 of Lost and the 104th and 105th produced hours of the series as a whole. They were originally broadcast as a two-hour premiere on February 2, 2010. The aftermath from Juliet's detonation of the fission core is revealed. Meanwhile, the man impersonating John Locke reveals his true intentions.

Synopsis

On the Island

At the statue

6x01 ManipulatingOnceMore

The Man in Black sends Ben with a message.

Shortly after, Bram grabs Ben and hauls him back into the statue with him, despite Richard's protest.

6x01 IsThatYouJohn

Ben comes face-to-face with the real, dead John Locke.

6x01 HelloSmokey

Bram faces the Monster inside the statue.

During the entirety of the fight, Ben cowers in a corner, looking on in shock. At the conclusion of the fight, the Man in Black (once again as Locke) reappears behind Ben and states: "Sorry that you had to see me like that," thus definitively revealing the link between the Monster, the Man in Black, and post-Ajira Flight 316 Locke.

6x01 Go home

The Man in Black tells Ben he wants to "go home."

Ben, noticeably shocked, finally manages to ask the Man in Black, "what are you?" He only answers that he's not a "what" but a "who." The Man in Black then tells Ben that John Locke was very confused when Ben killed him and his last thought was "I don't understand." As Ben grapples with these revelations, the Man in Black goes on explaining how sad and pathetic Locke's life was. He continues that Locke's only redeeming virtue was to have been the only one of the Oceanic 815 survivors not to want to go back to their worthless pre-Island life, but rather to stay on the Island. He finishes his speech to Ben by reflecting on the irony of this situation, because unlike Locke, he wants to go "home."

6x01 OutsideTheStatue

Richard and the Man in Black face each other.

At the Swan and the Temple

6x01 Kate Eye

Kate awakens following Jughead's detonation.

6x01 HelloI'mJacob

Jacob appears to Hurley an hour after his murder.

Meanwhile, at the van, Hurley is tending to Sayid when Jacob appears from the Jungle. He tells Hurley that he died an hour ago. Jacob then tells Hurley he needs to take Sayid and the guitar case he had given him previously to the Temple.

6x01 GoodbyeJules

Juliet succumbs to her injuries, before delivering her message to Sawyer.

Jin, together with Hurley and the injured Sayid, return to the Swan where they manage to remove the wreckage covering Juliet. Sawyer climbs into the hole beneath the wreckage and briefly talks to Juliet. Juliet mumbles something about getting coffee sometime and smiles as she says, "We can go dutch." She then seems to realize where she is, and her last words are "I have to tell you something; it's really really important." She then dies from her injuries.

After she is buried, Sawyer orders Miles to communicate with her, in order to find out what important news she wanted to give him. After a brief commune with Juliet, Miles tells Sawyer her message: "It worked."

6x01 PlayThat Ankh

The content of Hurley's guitar case is revealed to be an Ankh.

The remainder of the group make their way to the Temple. The group enters the temple via a hole at the base of the wall. Inside they find a skeleton missing an arm (Montand) and take the skeleton's book, a French copy of Søren Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling. While making their way through the tunnels beneath the Temple, Kate and Jack hear whispers just before the entire group is captured by the Others. This group of Others takes the captured group to the Temple. There, they meet Dogen, the Japanese leader of this particular group, who talks through his interpreter Lennon. Hidden inside the ankh is a piece of paper. Dogen reads it and asks for each of their names. Hurley demands to know what the paper says and Lennon tells him that the Temple dwellers will all be in trouble if Sayid dies.

6x01 CoverHisEyes

Dogen covers Sayid's eyes after his death.

The Others bring Sayid into the Temple, where a large spring bubbles in the center, Lennon comments that the spring is not running clearly. Dogen approaches the water, cuts his hand and then submerges it in the water, noting that the water did not heal it. After informing Jack that there are risks, Dogen orders his followers to submerge Sayid in the water and turns over an hourglass. Dogen leaves the survivors alone to mourn Sayid. Later, Cindy enters along with Zack and Emma, the children from the tail section, bringing the survivors some food. Miles and an unconscious Sawyer are also brought to the Temple at this point, after being captured by Others in the jungle.

6x01 What happened

Sayid is mysteriously brought back to life.

While waiting in the Temple spring room, Hurley and Miles sit near Sayid's body, as Hurley says goodbye to his friend. Sawyer awakens. He tells Kate that he doesn't plan to kill Jack, because "he deserves to suffer on this rock just like the rest of us." Lennon enters and asks to speak with Jack in private, but Jack argues and scuffles with several of the Others. The fight is interrupted when all present are shocked to see Sayid sit up, very much alive. He pauses, confused, and asks, "What happened?"

Flash sideways

(See Timeline differences)

6x01RoseJack

Jack and Rose greet each other on the plane.

Aboard Oceanic Flight 815, Jack gazes out the window at passing clouds. Cindy, a flight attendant, asks him how his drink is, then smiles when he admits it's not very strong. She gives him a small bottle of vodka and asks him to keep it between them.

Suddenly, the plane begins shaking, and the pilot announces they are running into some turbulence ahead. Rose, the woman across the aisle, assures Jack it's normal and jokes that her husband always says planes are meant to be in the air. They chat for a while before the turbulence worsens, and Jack grips the armrests with an expectant look. However, the plane passes through, and Bernard returns safely from the bathroom commenting "Remind me to hold it next time, will you. I almost died in the bathroom. Now I know how laundry feels in the dryer." Rose replies: "I missed you." Bernard responds, I missed you too, beautiful" and kisses her.

6x01Desplane

Desmond appears on Flight 815.

Jack gets up to go to the lavatory, and inspects himself carefully in the mirror, noticing, to his confusion, a small bleeding cut on his neck. Going back to his seat, he meets a man named Desmond Hume, who switched to the seat next to him while Jack was in the bathroom. Jack struggles to remember whether they have met before, but neither can place it. The view then shifts out the window and down into the ocean, where the remains of the Island are shown, now submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean. Underwater, the remains of the DHARMA Barracks and security fence are visible, and a DHARMA shark is seen swimming near Tawaret's four-toed foot, revealing the island's submergence.

Jack heads to the forward lavatory, where Edward Mars waits for his "friend." Kate bursts out of the door and runs into Jack, apologizing and taking his pen before the Marshal hauls her back to her seat.

6x01 TakingAdvantage

Sawyer warns Hurley about his lottery win.

Smiling, Sun gazes at Rose and Bernard a few rows ahead; she tells Jin that they look so happy together. Jin tells her to button the top of her sweater.

6x01 BooneAndLockeAgain

Boone and Locke exchange their reasons for being in Australia.

John Locke reads a safety brochure, leading Boone, sitting nearby, to say it won't be any use if the plane goes down in the ocean. John replies a good pilot could negotiate a water landing, and the fuel tanks would keep the plane afloat until the survivors could get onto the life rafts. They strike up a conversation: Boone explains he was in Australia to get his sister out of a bad relationship, but she didn't want to come back with him. Locke says he went on a walkabout for ten days in the Australian outback, which greatly impresses Boone. Boone remarks if the plane does crash, he'll stick with Locke. Frogurt is sleeping in the seat next to Locke, between him and Boone.

6x01 AmIAlive

Charlie Pace is revived by Jack, wondering if he is alive.

Cindy makes an announcement asking for any doctors on board to press their call buttons, and eventually comes over to ask Jack for help: one of the passengers has been in the lavatory for half an hour and is no longer responding to any knocks. With the help of Sayid and a flight attendant, they force open the door to find Charlie Pace sitting unconscious on the toilet.

6x01 SafeLanding

Oceanic Flight 815 lands safely in Los Angeles.

As Charlie is led in handcuffs to his seat, he angrily tells Jack he was supposed to die. Jack returns to his seat, and notices Desmond is no longer sitting in his row. He asks Rose and Bernard where he is, but Rose simply responds that they were asleep. Captain Seth Norris announces that they are on final approach to Los Angeles and instructs passengers to buckle up, leading Rose to remark to Jack that they are almost home. Sayid looks at a photo of Nadia as other passengers move their seats upright and buckle their seat belts. Jack shares a nod with Locke before leaving, reminiscent of a similar nod they shared when boarding in Sydney. After Jack leaves the plane, two Oceanic employees bring a wheelchair onto the plane and push a still paralyzed Locke off the aircraft.

6x01 KoreansInTrouble

Jin and Sun run into trouble involving Jin's money.

At Los Angeles International Airport, Jack is paged to an Oceanic Airlines desk, where a company representative informs him that his father's coffin apparently was not put onto the plane in Sydney, and they are uncertain of its current location. Jack is highly upset at this development, complaining that the funeral is supposed to take place in two hours.

Jin and Sun attempt to go through customs and the officials are frustrated at their language barrier. They find the watch Jin is transporting, and, failing to understand it is a business gift, continue to search his bag. Finding a pouch containing stacks of undeclared cash, Agent Smalley leads Jin away for questioning. Agent Anne advises Sun (referring to her by her maiden name, Ms. Paik) that if she knows some English and can explain it would clear things up, but Sun appears not to understand.

6x01 PregnantAndHijacked

Claire is frozen in fear as Kate hijacks her taxi.

Meanwhile after clearing customs, Kate talks the marshal into letting her go to the bathroom, where she attempts to pick the handcuffs with the pen she pick-pocketed from Jack. When the marshal discovers the spring from the pen on the floor, he demands she come out and Kate shoves open the bathroom stall door, pushing him down and causing him to hit his head on the sink, knocking him unconscious.

6x02-KatesEscape

Kate attempts to escape from her handcuffs.

Once out of the elevator and in baggage claim, Kate notices airport employees looking for her. Kate sneaks into an employee's only area, which she uses to get outside without having to use the main doors. From there, Kate tries to get a cab, however, she is told by an angry Neil "Frogurt" there is a line, and so gets in line behind Hurley. When Edward Mars sights her, Kate hops in the back of an already occupied cab and demands the driver leave at gunpoint. Sitting beside Kate in the back seat of the cab is Claire.

6x01 HereIsMyCard

Jack hands Locke his business card for a free consultation.

In a small Oceanic Airlines office, Jack speaks back and forth on the cell phone with his mother, who apparently never wanted to hold the funeral directly after his body is transported safely. However, Jack says he just wanted to get it over with soon, and explains the rest of the situation to her. Jack meets Locke, who is finishing up filling out paperwork on his case of knives, which the airline has also misplaced. He offers him a free consultation, gives him his business card and holds the door open for Locke to wheel out.

Trivia

  • Shortly before the camera reveals the foot of the Statue of Taweret underwater, there is a DHARMA logo visible on the tail of the shark that swims by.
  • Claire, Shannon, Michael, Walt, Nikki, Paulo, Scott, Steve, Sullivan, and other characters from previous seasons known to be on board Oceanic 815 were not seen on the plane in the flash-sideways timeline. Boone speaks about Shannon and Claire is seen in the cab Kate hijacked at LAX. Claire's presence on the flight is implied in the next episode "What Kate Does", and finally confirmed in "The Candidate."
  • Desmond is seen by Jack on the flight, but in the original timeline he was on the Island, working at the Swan Station. Desmond is wearing a wedding ring, though this is a continuity error since in "Happily Ever After" he was not wearing one.
  • Ana Lucia, Eko and Libby, as well as Zack and Emma, who were all in the tail section, were not shown to be on the flight.
  • When viewing the address shown on Jack's business card (8444 Wilshire Blvd) on [1], you can see a film crew. It is highly unlikely this is a Lost-related shoot.
  • One of the Ankhs the four-toed statue was holding is now visible to its right, underwater.
  • When Jack is successful in reviving Charlie on Flight 815, his first words are, "Am I alive?". This is the same message actor Dominic Monaghan had scrawled on his palm in black marker that he held up to the audience at Comic Con 2009.
  • When Arzt asks Hurley to do the Australian accent from the commercial, this is a reference to the Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack commercial also shown at Comic Con 2009.
  • The police code "341" heard in the elevator is "Discharging Firearms".
  • The customs officer, Agent Anne, who asked Sun if she spoke English, referred to her as "Miss Paik" instead of "Mrs Kwon". It's not until "The Package" that it is revealed that Sun and Jin are indeed not married in the flash-sideways timeline.
  • These episodes are Rated TV-14-LV.
  • The episode aired on Groundhog Day.
  • After Sayid supposedly drowns in the Temple water, Miles is seen looking at his body strangely, which Hurley takes note of. This is foreshadowing the fact that Sayid is not actually dead, since Miles was most likely wondering why he couldn't hear Sayid's last thoughts before drowning.

Production notes

  • This is the first episode to begin the opening credits with "An ABC STUDIOS PRODUCTION". This has since become a standard for all ABC shows.
  • Unusually, there was no guest cast list given before the airing of the episode in the ABC press releases, to avoid spoiling the episode.
  • The flash sideways "whoosh" is different from the previous flashback sound.
  • This is the first season premiere in which all main cast members appear, since "Pilot, Part 1".
  • Emilie de Ravin (Claire) rejoins the main cast. Recurring guest stars Nestor Carbonell (Richard), Jeff Fahey (Frank) and Zuleikha Robinson (Ilana) are promoted to main cast.
  • While Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond) was not named a member of the main cast by ABC prior to the episode's airing, he is credited with them. He is credited during Part 2 in the separated episodes, making the situation non-episode specific and as peculiar as the case of Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro in Season 3 (or Jeremy Davies, Ken Leung and Rebecca Mader in Season 4), being deemed guest stars by ABC but regulars in the on-screen credits.
  • Originally, Maggie Grace (Shannon) was set to make an appearance, but was unable to film any scenes due to her busy schedule. Thus, the backstory was rewritten to accommodate this. [2]
  • This episode featured special appearances by former main cast members Elizabeth Mitchell, Dominic Monaghan and Ian Somerhalder.
  • Kimberley Joseph (Cindy), Mickey Graue (Zack) and Kiersten Havelock (Emma) appear for the first time since the Season 3's "The Brig".
  • Due to the nature of the timeline, many previously dead characters reappeared in the flash-sideways.
  • On versions of the episode where it is split into two parts (non-U.S.), three scenes are shortened for timing issues. These scenes are:
    • When Ben is staring at the fire and Locke tells him to stop looking at it, since Jacob is gone, it jumps right to the part where John tells Ben to go get Richard.
    • Where Ben is staring at Locke's corpse on the beach the scene starts with the part in which Bram drags him to to see Jacob.
    • During the closing montage of Part 1, when the 815 passengers get off the plane, shots of Sawyer and Hurley exiting are removed.
      • In addition, the background music is slightly sped up in this scene. In the version that originally aired (as well as the DVD version), Giacchino's score is timed to where a note on the piano is played precisely when Jack looks at Locke, as he's being helped into his wheelchair. In the since edited versions, including Netflix, the music and the on-screen action don't sync up.
    • In addition, the opening scenes of Part 2 were moved around slightly. The flash-sideways where Jack is called away from the customs queue to the courtesy desk is moved later into the episode so that it does not appear in the teaser. This creates a continuity error with Kate's scene.
  • An audio commentary for Part 1 by producers/writers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse is available for this episode on the Season 6 DVD.
    • According to the commentary, the scene when Sawyer and Juliet are under the wreckage of the Swan had to be filmed again. The original film was ruined, so Elizabeth Mitchell was asked to come back from Vancouver to film the scene a second time.

Bloopers and continuity errors

  • When Jack walks to the plane's restroom, he passes a bulkhead wall with a call-button device visible on it. When he watches Kate and marshal Edward Mars return to their seats, they enter the same bulkhead row, but no call-button device is visible on the wall.
  • Mars took a fork and knife away from Kate. Silverware would not be allowed on a plane after 9/11. Later on the plane, the stewardess says that there are no sharp items on the plane because of regulations.
  • When Sayid is lowered into the spring, his bullet hole is gone.
  • When Sayid is removed from the spring, his hair is soaking wet. Just a few seconds later, when he's being laid on the ground, his hair is much drier.
  • When Sayid is being taken down the steps in the temple to the water, a background extra removes the stretcher twice between shots.
  • When Sawyer finds Juliet at the Swan site, her hands move into various positions between shots, though she is obviously unconscious at the time.
  • Oceanic 815 is supposed to be a Boeing 777. The approaching scene showed a correct 777, however:
    • The sequence where you can see the landing gear on touch down shows four wheels on the main landing gear. A Boeing 777 has six wheels.
    • The plane approaching the gate has four engines (you can see the engine shadows). The actual plane at the gate is an Airbus A340.
  • When Charlie is being taken from the plane by policemen, he looks left to Jack and all the passengers are facing him. In the next image, Jack looks right, but all the passengers faced opposite.
  • Jack is carrying one side of the stretcher up until the time when Kate moves out of sight under the Temple wall. When Jack becomes concerned for her, he grabs the flashlight from Hurley and goes after Kate. However, he may have set the stretcher down off screen, while the camera panned in the direction Kate went.
  • When Hurley and the others enter the tunnel under the Temple, after Hurley says "this is gonna be awesome," a can of soda can be seen on a ledge behind Kate's torch.
  • When Sawyer throws Miles over Juliet's grave to "talk to her," Miles' face is covered with dirt. In the next shot his face is clean.

A Kino Flo Diva-Lite can be seen to the right of the van.

  • At 25:14 into "LA X, Part 1," when Hurley is backing up the DHARMA van to the hatch site, a Kino Flo Diva-Lite can be seen to the right of the van helping to light the scene.
  • In countries outside of the US, where this episode is broadcast as two separate episodes (i.e. two lots of credits) a scene change creates a continuity error in Part 2.
  • In the airport bathroom scene where Kate kicks out the door to knock out the Marshal, you can see that the door to her stall has been modified so that the door opens outwards; however, in the next shot you will see that all the other doors in the washroom open the normal way, inwards.
  • After Ben stabs Jacob in the season five finale "The Incident, Part 2" his shirt is covered in blood; yet in this episode, just minutes later, there are no blood stains on Ben's clothes.
  • When Hurley yells at Jack as Sayid wakes up, one of the Others Jack is fighting immediately spins around to look at Sayid even though he would not have known right away why Hurley yelled.
  • The imploded hatch is noticeably different to when it is first shown imploded in "Further Instructions".
    • The exercise bike from the hatch can be seen as Sawyer is climbing down the hole to get Juliet. However, in previous episodes after the explosion of the hatch, the bike can be seen lying in the jungle.
  • When Charlie is arrested after he says "You should have let that happen," and walks off to the right of Jack, and then he says "I was supposed to die," right back in front of Jack.
Sayid passport from LAX

Sayid's mysterious Iranian passport and customs form with 1972 birthdate.

  • Sayid is shown with an Iranian passport, even though he is Iraqi and he states so on the customs declaration form that is also shown. His date of birth is also given on the form as April 25, 1972, even though according to Sayid, he was 23 years old in 1990 during the Gulf War. It is conceivable he was traveling under a false passport, except he states his real name on the form.
  • Sayid's customs form depicts the logo of the old United States Customs Service, which was replaced in March 2003 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The U.S. Customs and Border Projection uses the logo of its parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security. Updated forms would have been used by September 2004.

Cultural references

  • Earth X: "X" is commonly used in comic books including Marvel Comics which have an alternate history/timeline called "Earth X". DC Comics also had two parallel earths with similar names, Earth-X, introduced in 1936, and Jimmy Olsen's Earth-X, introduced in 1966. (Literary works)
  • Haroun and the Sea of Stories: Desmond is reading this book by British Indian writer Salman Rushdie. "It is a phantasmagorical story set in a city so old and ruinous that it has forgotten its name". It is an allegorical story about a 10-year-old boy in an imaginary world called "Kahani" and his father is the story teller. After his mother leaves his father, the father is unable to tell stories anymore. There is a water genie who controls the Ocean of the Stream of Stories. Haroun is the Arabic for Aaron. (Literary works)
  • Amelia Earhart: As Cindy rushes to the back of the plane with medical supplies for Charlie, Sawyer asks "What's goin' on back there, Earhart?" Amelia Earhart was the noted American aviation pioneer who went missing in 1937 during a circumnavigational flight of the globe over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. (History)
  • Fear and Trembling: The book encountered in the Temple is this influential philosophical work (original title: Frygt og Bæven) by Danish philosopher, theologian, and psychologist Søren Kierkegaard, published in 1843 under the pseudonym Johannes de silentio ("John the Silent"). In the book, through alternative re-tellings of the Biblical story of Abraham and the Binding of Isaac, Kierkegaard examines the role of faith and its relationship with morality and ethics. The title is a reference to a line from Philippians 2:12, "...continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling." (Literary works)
  • "Crocodile" Dundee: Boone compares Locke to the main character of this 1986 Australian comedy film set in the Australian Outback. (Movies and TV)
  • Kumbaya: As Sayid is taken out of the DHARMA van and Hurley takes the guitar case out, Miles asks: "Are we gonna sing 'Kumbaya' on the way?" "Kumbaya" is an African-American spiritual song from the 1930s that enjoyed newfound popularity during the folk revival of the 1960s and became a standard campfire song in nature-oriented organizations. More recently it is cited or alluded to in sarcastic or cynical ways. (Music)
  • The X-Files: When Bernard returns from the lavatory, Rose flips over the fictional magazine she has been reading, Weekly Woodsman, to reveal an advertisement for Morley Cigarettes featuring the phrase, "The truth is out there..." accompanied by a picture of a UFO. The Smoking Man character notably smoked Morleys, and the phrase, along with a similar picture, was often seen on a poster hanging in Fox Mulder's office. (Movies and TV)
  • Airplane!: In the audio commentary for this episode, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse point out that Kate being served lasagna on the plane is a reference to this movie. When the passengers begin to get food poisoning, they try to find out if the pilot ate chicken or fish. Leslie Nielsen's character Dr. Rumack says "Yes, I had the lasagna." (Movies and TV)
  • Pool of Bethesda: The pool at the Temple bears a striking similarity to this pool in Jerusalem, commonly associated with healing. The name comes from the Hebrew beth hesda, meaning "house of mercy/grace". In both Hebrew and Aramaic, it can also mean either "shame" or "disgrace". (History)(Religion)

Literary techniques

  • At Comic-Con 2009, Damon and Carlton promised that a new device would be introduced. This appears to be the "flash sideways" (as Carlton Cuse calls it[1]) to a timeline where flight 815 never crashed, introduced in this episode. (Flash-sideways)
  • In the flash-sideways timeline, Boone tells Locke "If this thing goes down, I'm with you." In the original timeline, this led to his death. (Irony)
  • In the flash-sideways timeline, Jack offers John Locke help with his disability and shakes his hand. (Irony)  (Juxtaposition)
  • In the flash sideways Jack notices a cut on his neck - a wound he will sustain on the Island in "The End". (Foreshadowing)
  • On Flight 815, a calm Rose reassures a nervous Jack. Rose says "You can let go now," a substitute for the original "I'm letting you off the hook." (Irony)
  • When Jack clears an unconscious Charlie's throat of drugs, Charlie asks "Am I alive?", to which Jack says "yes." Both are actually dead. (Irony)
  • On the original Flight 815, it was Jack who reassured Rose that turbulence was normal. In the flash-sideways, their roles are reversed. (Juxtaposition)
  • In the flash sideways, Hurley now has good luck as a result of winning the lottery. (Juxtaposition)
  • On the flight, Sawyer, who is a conman in the original timeline, warns Hurley that people will take advantage of him if he tells them he won the lottery. (Irony)
  • Ben was healed at the Temple after Sayid shot him. Now Sayid is healed in the pool after he has been shot by Ben's father. (Irony)  (Juxtaposition)
  • Boone asks Locke if he's just "pulling his leg." Boone seems to be unaware that Locke cannot walk. Meanwhile, the injuries to Boone's leg, indirectly caused by Locke, contributed to Boone's death on the Island. (Irony)
  • A character named Bram is killed by being impaled by wood, like how a vampire is killed by a stake. (Irony)
  • "Locke" is revealed to be the Smoke Monster, who is one and the same with the Man in Black. (Plot twist)
  • Ben and Richard claim that "dead is dead" on the Island and there's no coming back. Yet Sayid mysteriously manages to revive after being pronounced dead by both Dogen and Jack. (Irony)
  • Sayid is revealed to have survived his treatment by the Others, despite the initial suggestion of his death. (Plot twist)
  • In order to be brought to life, Sayid must be fully immersed in water in a scene that looks in some ways like a Christian baptism. Since water in baptism represents purification from sin, the dirty water might suggest that he hasn't been fully cured of what ails him. (Symbolism)
  • In the flash sideways, during their conversation about Locke's condition, Jack's faith now seems to exceed Locke's. While alive, Locke was the "man of faith", while Jack was the "man of science". (Juxtaposition)
  • The apparent motivation behind the Man in Black's actions is to go back "home". To do so, he took the guise of John Locke, who wanted to remain on the Island and never go back. (Irony)  (Juxtaposition)
  • Hurley believes the deceased Jacob to be alive when he walks out of the jungle, whereas the last time they met he believed the still living Jacob to be dead. (Irony)  (Juxtaposition)
  • Jacob confirms that Hurley does see and talk with the dead and that this ability is not related to any mental illness. (Irony)
  • Bram stated earlier that he is in the team of winners to Miles. Ironically enough, he is now dead, and Miles, who was originally "playing for the wrong team" is alive. (Irony)
  • Arzt tells Hurley "Oh. Good. Good for you." (Regularly spoken phrases)
  • Richard says "You?!" upon seeing the MiB. (Regularly spoken phrases)
  • Hurley says, "I like chicken," as one of his reasons for taking over Mr. Clucks. (Regularly spoken phrases)
  • Kate hijacks Claire's taxi to run from Edward Mars. Their fate is left unresolved. (Cliffhanger)

("The Beginning of the End")
  • Jack resuscitates Charlie. ("All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")
