Character History

  • When the young Sawyer sees the boots of the guy who kills his mother, he thinks, it is his father. But the person later blows his head off. Infact he sees the OLD Sawyer killing his mother in rage after getting off the island in 1977. There are several hinds in the story related to this scene: When Sawyers sees the Dharma-brainwash-movie he stares at "we are the cause of our own suffering", and when they have the flashes, Locke asks him: "What did you see? Did you see yourself?". So the letter in Sawyers pocket would ironically adress himself in real and not Locke's dad without Sawyer really knowing yet. This final theory was first postet on youtube 04-26-09 by german fan Christoph Hardt, Germany Lost Season Six Sawyer Ending
  • Sawyer once served in the armed forces. He once used the term "klicks" to describe a distance on the Island as well as say "sweep the perimeter". Hurley responds to each statement with confusion on to how he knows those terms. Sawyer also possesses a great amount of combat training and knowledge of martial arts. He was able to size up and subdue a number of others on the Hydra island relatively quick. Sawyer fought in the Gulf War, against Sayid's unit.
    • In addition, he was quick to point out that the smoke from the boat disappeared. This could just mean he is observant (but then again, Juliet is one of the most observent people on the island and she noticed nothing) or it could be that he has seen a boat sink before in some training exercise or real battle.
    • Sawyer has proven himself to be well enough read to know exactly what the term "clicks" means. I do not believe he was a soldier in any war. Previous to the Island, I should say. And really, he has shown no martial arts ability, let alone training.
    • Something else is his antagoization of Sayid upon first meeting him. "Fine, I'm the criminal, you're the terrorist." If he fought in a Gulf War he could have stronger feelings than most against an Iraqi.
      • Sawyer described Sayid as "the one guy [on the Island] who's actually been in a war". Unless he was lying or exaggerating, this means that Sawyer never fought in a war.
  • Sawyer claims to have dropped out of school in 9th grade, but in "The Brig," Locke lists "high school transcripts" as being among the items in Sawyer's file. Sawyer has a high school diploma, but wants Jack to believe that he is uneducated.
    • A transcript doesn't necessarily mean that he graduated from high school; he would have still had a permanent record regardless of whether he dropped out or not.
      • 9th grade in many American schools is high school, so he attended long enough to get his high school transcripts.

Con Man

  • Gordy may have payed off Kilo after the David'Jessica con and then Sawyer pulled the long con for him. that's why he owed him.

On the Island

  • He wants to be punished for Duckett's murder, but also doesn't want to tell anyone what he's done. So he acts like a jerk to get everyone to hate him. Before the crash, he was clearly comfortable being a con man, and easy to like, as con men have to be.
  • Every time Sawyer is present at a whisper it says "It'll come back around" in Duckett's voice, this implies that Saywer will be shot like Duckett was.
  • All of the movie references around Sawyer (the Pulp Fiction injection, being tossed into his cage Planet of the Apes style, the Star Wars Wookie prisoner trick, and the Clockwork Orange brainwashing), as well as his nicknames, are manifestations of Sawyer's subconscious. Obvious movie references only happen when Sawyer is involved.
  • The short time he spent in Room 23 affected him somehow. Since he's been back with the losties he hasn't been as edgy and even more forgiving. He also threw the diamonds in Nikki and Paulo's grave, something that the old Sawyer wouldn't have done.
  • There is something significant about Sawyer's feet. There have been two seemingly meaningless sequences that involved his feet: 1)Sawyer got a dart from the Hatch stuck in his foot on the way back from Hydra Island, and 2) Sawyer experiences pain as he walks barefoot through the jungle with Locke to the Black Rock. These two events had absolutely no bearing on the episode at the time, but they were included anyway.
    • Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn rarely wore shoes.
    • The feet young Sawyer sees from beneath the bed are the feet of old Sawyer who kills his mother for making his future not happen and then kills himself.
    • The dart was there to show a development in his relationship and his feet hurt with Locke because he had been found by Locke during the night. I'm not sure what the significance is or could be.
    • Sawyer is again shown walking barefoot across the island in "The Lie" and hurts his foot - this time with a twig becoming stuck in his foot. Again, this is clearly shown despite having little obvious significance to the storyline suggesting that there is something meaningful to this recurring scenario.
  • Sawyer sided with Locke out of gratefulness for enabling him to kill Anthony.
  • Sawyer has a connection to Locke almost similar to the connection between Claire and Jack, this is through parents/parent relations. This may have some significance.
  • Sawyer has a special connection with Aaron, this is shown by the use of Sawyers voice to stop his crying.
  • Sawyer was the blond, long-haired DHARMA member seen running past the classroom window during the hostile attack on The Barracks in The Man Behind the Curtain.
  • Sawyer's skeleton is the one frequently seen in the mass grave with the bullet hole in its skull.
  • It'll come back around -- Sawyer's fate will be a tragic one, as a younger Duckett will kill 'Lafleur'. Duckett's dying line "It'll come back around" (also heard among island whispers) will then take on added significance: Initially it served akin to a mere vow/promise of vengeance/karma after Sawyer had shot him; upon shooting Lafleur, the circle or loop (implied by the line) will become complete: Duckett kills Sawyer, and Sawyer kills Duckett.
  • Saywer remains on the Island in 1977 and does not leave or go back to the present time. Instead, he remains, joins the Others, and grows older. The character we know as Tom, or Mr. Friendly, is actually Sawyer. The poetic irony is that the young Sawyer ends up killing himself, Tom. Duckett's dying statement that "It'll come back around" is fulfilled.
