Aboard Flight 815

Jack recognizes Desmond. ("LA X, Part 1")

On Oceanic flight 815, Jack looked from his window. He was approached by a flight attendant, Cindy, who asked how his drink was. He told her that the drink was not very strong, so she gave him a sample bottle of vodka. He was chatting with Rose, a neighboring passenger, when the plane hit turbulence. Once the plane was in calm air again, Jack, who had been nervous, said to Rose that it looked like they "made it." Jack then went to the lavatory where he looked closely at his face in the mirror and saw a bleeding cut on the left side of his neck near the collar line. Jack returned to his seat and met Desmond who he seemed to recognize. He asked Desmond if they had met before but Desmond did not seem to recognize Jack.

Later, Jack returned to the lavatory and saw Marshal Edward Mars, who claimed to be waiting for a "friend." The lavatory door opened and Kate Austen stumbled into Jack. They smiled at each other as they disentangled and Jack watched her as she walked back to her seat while Mars held her elbow.

Jack attempts to resuscitate Charlie Pace. ("LA X, Part 1")

Once Jack returned to his seat, the flight attendant he met earlier made a call over the intercom for a doctor. Jack answered her call and went with her to a lavatory where a man had been locked inside for half an hour, causing the flight staff to be alarmed. Sayid Jarrah, a fellow passenger, arrived and kicked the door in. Inside they found a passenger, Charlie Pace, who was unconscious. Jack managed to remove a small plastic bag of heroin from Charlie's throat. Charlie was ungrateful and told Jack that he was "supposed to die." ("LA X, Part 1")

After the Flight

At the Airport

Charlie Pace was escorted first from the plane by police officers and glared at Jack. Jack saw John Locke as he was transferred to the airport's wheelchair when Jack started to disembark.

Jack meets John Locke. ("LA X, Part 2")

While waiting in line for the customs process, Jack was paged over the airport intercom. At the Oceanic service desk, Jack was told that his father's coffin did not make it onto the plane and that the airline was not sure where the body was. Jack then spoke to his mother on the phone about the need to postpone the funeral they had scheduled for two hours after Flight 815's landing. A fellow passenger John Locke, the man in a wheelchair, was also in the Oceanic office. Jack told Locke that the airline lost his father's body. Locke said that Oceanic didn't lose Jack's father, they merely lost his body. Jack asked about Locke's medical condition and was told by Locke that his condition was irreversible. Jack replied that "nothing is irreversible." Jack gave John Locke his business card and offered him a consult "on the house." ("LA X, Part 2")

Back to Work

Later that same day, Jack returned to work at St. Sebastian Hospital and briefly encountered both Desmond and Charlie, who had been hospitalized following a car accident provoked by Charlie. ("Happily Ever After")

The next day at work, he passed by Sayid and Nadia in a hallway of the hospital, but did not seem to notice them, despite having met Sayid the day before aboard Oceanic flight 815. ("Sundown")

David

The next day, Jack arrived at his apartment after work and changed his shirt. He noticed his appendicitis scar and looked at it with some curiosity and uncertainty as to when he had an appendectomy. His mother called him and Jack told her that his father's coffin had still not been found. She told Jack that she could not locate his father's will and Jack offered to come over and help her look for it. He asked her when he had his appendix taken out and she said that he was 7 or 8 years old. Jack was uncertain whether he remembered.

Jack picks up David late from school. ("Lighthouse")

Jack looked at the clock, excused himself and hung up the phone as his mother was still talking and he left to pick up his son David from school. When he met David he apologized for running late but David was unimpressed. Back at home, Jack noticed a book of David's and began to talk to him about it, but David left the room. Jack followed him and told David that he just wanted to have a conversation with him. David asked why they should talk and just wanted to get through their time together with as little interaction as possible.

Jack went to his mother's house and they searched for the will. His mother offered him a drink and seemed pleased that he refused it. She mentioned to Jack that David was very upset at the funeral and Jack commented that David was a poor communicator. Jack's mother pointed out that Jack was also a poor communicator when he was David's age and Jack explained that that was because he had been terrified of his father. His mother said that David might feel the same way about Jack. She then found the will and began to read it and as she did she asked Jack if his father had ever mentioned Claire Littleton.

Jack returned home with pizza as promised but David was not there. Jack called David and left a message saying that he apologized for whatever he might have done and that he was on his way to David's mother's house to find him. When Jack reached her house he went in played the answering machine, and discovered that David was at an audition for acceptance into Williams Conservatory. Jack drove there and saw David's fine piano audition which he was moved by. After the performance, a boy approached Jack and told him that he admired David's performance and the boy's father told Jack that David had a gift.

Jack makes a promise to his son. ("Lighthouse")

Jack waited outside for David after the audition. Once David came out, Jack discovered that David had been afraid to tell him about the audition because he felt that Jack always made such a big deal of the piano playing, and that David was afraid he'd fail. Jack explained to David that he too had been frightened of failing because his father once told him that he didn't have what it takes. He told David that his father's words were something he had spent his whole life carrying around with him. Jack reassured David that he could never fail in his eyes and that he just wanted to be a part of David's life. ("Lighthouse")

The next week, Jack went, along with his son David, for the reading of his father's will. When they got to Ilana, the lawyer, she showed them that Claire Littleton was there. When Jack asks how she knew his father, explaining that she was in his will, she says he was also her father. Jack, shocked, takes a call from the hospital and tells them they have to do this another time. ("The Last Recruit")

Interest in Locke

When at the hospital, David was surprised that Christian never mentioned having another child. Later, when Jack was about to begin surgery, he discovered that his patient was none other than John Locke. ("The Last Recruit")

After operating on Locke (and repairing his dural sac), Jack told him that everything would be alright. Jack told Locke about his previous accident and said that he might be a candidate for a new type of surgery. Locke refused the offer. Helen, Locke's fiance, entered the room and thanked Jack for saving John's life.

Interested in how Locke was paralyzed in the first place, Jack visited Bernard Nadler, a dentist who had been on his flight. Jack asked Dr. Nadler about Locke's initial injury but, Bernard said that that was patient confidential. Bernard did tell him that there was another man brought in with Locke. On a piece of paper, Bernard wrote, "Anthony Cooper". Jack went to a retirement home and found Anthony Cooper but, he could not speak or move at all.

Jack- died for

Jack is glad to hear Locke wants to be fixed. ("What They Died For")

Jack found his half-sister, Claire, at the hospital. She showed him a music box that their father left in the will. Jack did not know what it was. After Claire asked how their father died, Jack told her that he drank himself to death and was found in an alley, outside of a bar. Claire and Jack realized that they were on the same flight. Jack offered Claire to stay at his flat, reminding her that they're family.

Passing by Jin in the hallway, Jack found Locke and offered him the surgery one more time. Locke refused and then told Jack about his airplane accident. Jack told him to let it go but, Locke wheeled himself out of the hospital, as Jack said, "I wish you believed me". ("The Candidate")

The day after, Jack woke up in his place, and went to the bathroom. As he was looking into the mirror, he noticed another cut on his neck, that he didn't seem to remember. He then took his breakfast with David and Claire. David asked him if he would go to the concert, Jack said he would, and asked if his mother would be there too. David said yes, and Jack then received a call, from Desmond, who was pretending to work for Oceanic, and who told Jack that they found his father's coffin.

Later that day, John Locke visited Jack at the hospital, and told him he was believing that being fixed by Jack might be his destiny, because of all the things that happened this week. Jack told him not to take coincidence for fate, but was glad to see that Locke was willing to get better.("What They Died For")
