Ilana was a mysterious survivor of Ajira Airways Flight 316. She claimed to be a bounty hunter working for the family of Peter Avellino to capture Sayid Jarrah and escort him to Guam, but she was actually summoned to the Island by Jacob to protect the candidates. Jacob and Ilana were shown as acquaintances while Ilana was severely injured in a Russian hospital, where he asked her to protect the remaining candidates, to which she agreed. Sometime after this, after Ilana had apprehended Sayid in Los Angeles, she and Sayid were both passengers aboard Flight 316 along with most of the Oceanic Six when the plane encountered turbulence and was transported above the Island. On the Island, she had assumed leadership of a group of people including the remaining survivors of the Flight 316 crash, including Bram, who all serve Jacob. She led these survivors, along with a knocked out Frank Lapidus, to the remains of the statue of Taweret, where she spoke to Richard Alpert and revealed that the John Locke with him was not who Richard thought he was. Ilana also appeared to have prior knowledge about the Island before arriving, as she knew her way around it to find Jacob's cabin, the Statue and the Temple. While there, Ilana led some of the candidates to safety, before encountering Richard again. Encouraged by his instructions, Ilana prepared a mission to destroy the Ajira plane, however her haste caused her to mishandle dynamite from Black Rock, which detonated and immediately killed her.

Before the Island

Early Life

Almost nothing is known about Ilana's early life. Apart from, according to her, Jacob was the closest person she ever had to a father. ("Dr. Linus")

Visited by Jacob

5x16 InjuredIlana

A heavily bandaged Ilana is visited by Jacob in a Russian hospital. ("The Incident, Part 1")  ("Ab Aeterno")

Sometime before 2007, Ilana became hospitalized in Russia after suffering an unknown severe burning injury that resulted in her being bedridden and heavily bandaged.

The nature of Ilana's injury and how it was obtained is unknown. A nurse approached Ilana's bedside and informed her she had a visitor, and that this would be good for her because she had not had any visitors in the entire duration of her stay at the hospital. The nurse said she had explained Ilana's condition, but the visitor had insisted on seeing her nevertheless. ("The Incident, Part 1")

This visitor turned out to be an off island Jacob, who apologized for not being able to come see her earlier. Ilana recognized him and said she was happy to see him. Jacob asked for her help with something, which she agreed to. He asked her to help him by going to the Island and protecting the six remaining candidates there - a mission Jacob said she had been preparing for.

An unknown amount of time later, Ilana, unbandaged and with her wounds healed, spoke with Jacob more about her mission. She asked what she should do after she had brought "them" to the Temple. Jacob told her to ask Ricardus, as he would know what to do next. ("The Incident, Part 1") ("Ab Aeterno")

It should be noted that, while Jacob made a point to make physical contact with the other main cast members during their collective flashbacks, he seemed to go out of his way to specifically not touch Ilana, wearing black leather gloves when he visits her, most likely to prevent Ilana from becoming a candidate herself, and therefore keeping her safe from the Man in Black. ("The Incident, Part 1")

Meeting Sayid

Normal our-you333

Ilana holds Sayid at gunpoint and reveals that she was hired by Peter Avellino's family. ("He's Our You")

Ilana first met Sayid in a bar drinking MacCutcheon whiskey, unbeknownst to him she already knew who he was. They had a brief, flirty conversation about their jobs, with Sayid mistaking Ilana for a professional prostitute, and Ilana commenting that she wasn't "professional at anything", before they got a room together in a hotel. After seducing Sayid, she asked him to take off her but, using it as a distraction as she she knocked him down and pinned him to the bed, before pulling a gun on him. Ilana said that she was hired by the family of Peter Avellino - the man who Sayid killed on a golf course while working for Benjamin Linus - to capture Sayid and bring him to Guam. When Sayid asked if she was a bounty hunter, she replied that it didn't matter who she was, and that he was going to answer for what he did. ("He's Our You")

The next day, at the LAX terminal, Ilana passed through security, posing as a federal marshal with Sayid as her prisoner. ("316") Just before the plane took off, Sayid noticed the other members of Oceanic Six outside their flight and, worried about where he might actually be going, requested they take a different flight because he is "very superstitious when it comes to flying", but Ilana sarcastically told him she would buy a rabbit's foot from the gift shop and insisted that they had to take this flight. She and Sayid got on Ajira Airways Flight 316, which shows she had knowledge from another source that this particular plane would crash on the island, presumably Jacob. ("He's Our You")

Flight 316

IlanaPlane

Ilana on the plane with Sayid in custody. ("316")

Some believe Ilana was meant to fulfill the role of Edward Mars from the original crash, as a proxy of sorts. She was in the front passage of the plane with the rest of the Oceanic 6, Ben, Frank, and Caesar, and she also had Sayid in her custody on the flight. Before takeoff, when Ben got on the plane, Sayid asked her if she was working with Benjamin Linus, and she asked Sayid who Benjamin Linus is. Sayid said that he is a liar and a murderer responsible for genocide, and Ilana replied, "Why would I work for somebody like that?" Sayid informed her that he did. As the plane encountered turbulence prior to the supposed crash, she looked visibly shaken. ("316")  ("He's Our You")

During the crash landing, Ilana was rendered unconscious and was awoken by Caesar, mumbling "Jarrah" as she came to. He introduced himself and informed her that they had crashed but were now safe. Somewhat disorientated, Ilana looked to the seat to her left to see that Sayid, who she was escorting to Guam, had disappeared. She looked around the cabin for him with no success. She got up out of her seat with Caesar's help and left the wrecked air carrier. ("Namaste")

At some point during the Ajira plane crash, Ilana also managed to injure her wrist. It is unknown how this happened or the extent of the injury, but she has kept her wrist in a bandage since. ("Namaste")

On the Island

2007 (Season 5)

IlanaNamaste

Ilana asks Sun if she lost anyone in the crash. ("Namaste")

After the crash, Ilana gathered on the beach with the rest of the Ajira survivors. She approached a worried Sun and asked if she was looking for someone, due to the expression on her face, and Sun's nervous fiddling with Jin's wedding ring. She then listened to Frank and Caesar debate about what they should do next. ("Namaste")

A short time later, Ilana and Caesar discovered the abandoned Hydra station, and decided to look inside. Neither of them appeared to have any previous knowledge of the DHARMA Initiative. While Caesar explored an office, he took a flashlight and a sawed-off shotgun which he stowed away in his bag. Ilana arrived, apparently already having visited the station, and informed him of a man in a suit that Roxanne had discovered whilst scouting south. She seemed very mistrustful of Caesar, asking him what he had found, and further pressing him when he lied about the shotgun.

5x07 JohnAndIlana

Ilana speaks with the mysterious "John Locke". ("The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham")

Caesar and Ilana then returned to their makeshift beach camp, passing the reasonably intact crashed plane, whilst discussing how none of the survivors recognized this man as being aboard during the flight. Caesar theorized that he may have been one of the passengers who disappeared whilst crashing, but Ilana disputed this, saying how he wasn't even on the plane to begin with. A roaring signal fire was burning, and many of the survivors stood in a circle surrounding a mysterious man draped in an Ajira Airways blanket.

Together, they met John Locke, the man under the blanket, whom they suspected had not been on the plane. The next morning, Ilana offered Locke a mango, in an attempt to strike up a conversation with him. He asked her if the outriggers belonged to them, to which she replied that they were already there. Locke asked her if she has a passenger manifest, and she told him that he would have to talk to Caesar about that. She then told him that no one remembered him being on the plane, and eagerly asked him what he remembered about his past. He told her that he didn't remember much, but that he remembered dying. Ilana appeared flustered and confused, and walked away. ("The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham")

Confrontation

Ilana demands to know "what lies in the shadow of the statue." ("Dead Is Dead")

Ilana was standing near a giant steel crate that several other Flight 316 survivors, including Bram, seemed to be trying to open, when Ben approached her after he had spoken to Locke about visiting the smoke monster. He asked her what was inside the crate, and she was brief with her answer, saying that it was just some things that they needed to get moved. When Ben asked her if they needed a hand, she told him that they had it.

After Ben shot Caesar and left Hydra Island on the outrigger, Ilana, Bram and three others, rid of their competition, found some guns and forcefully took over leadership of the remaining survivors. When Frank returned to Hydra Island, Jed informed him of this, and Frank cautiously approached Ilana. She walked up to him, holding him at gunpoint, and asked him, "What lies in the shadow of the statue?" When he failed to produce the answer she wanted, she hit him on the head with the butt of her rifle and knocked him to the ground. She then told Bram that it was "time" and to tie him up and take him with them. ("Dead Is Dead")

IlanaCabin

Ilana enters Jacob's cabin to find it deserted. ("The Incident, Part 1")

Ilana and Bram led the rest of their group to the main island in the outriggers including an unconscious Lapidus. When she and Bram got out of the outrigger they were in, he asked her why they were keeping Frank, as he did not know the answer to the question she had posed to him earlier. Ilana responded that just because Frank did not know the answer didn't mean he wasn't special. Bram asked if that meant she thought Frank was a candidate, but Ilana did not respond and instead pointed out that Frank was awake. He asked what he was a candidate for, and she told him that her group were "friends." They showed Frank what was inside of the Ajira crate, and he was shocked by what he saw.

5x17 JustAFriend

Ilana reveals herself to Richard Alpert and the Others. ("The Incident, Part 2")

Ilana and the survivors made their way to Jacob's cabin, which she found to be deserted. Bram discovered that the ring of ash around the cabin was broken, and the group appeared distraught. Ilana stepped over the ash and went inside to look for clues that would tell her what to do. She found a scrap of cloth that bore the picture of the statue, and before they left. She told the group that someone other than Jacob had been using the cabin and that they had to burn it. The group burned the cabin and Ilana led everyone to the statue. ("The Incident, Part 1")

When they arrived at the remains of the statue, the group encountered Sun and the Others, who were awaiting the return of Locke and Ben from their visit inside of the foot to see Jacob. Ilana asked for Ricardus, and when Richard answered, she repeated the question of what lies in the shadow of the statue. Richard answered correctly in Latin, saying "he who will save us all." Ilana prompted her group to reveal the contents of the crate after Richard told the Others to stand down. The body of the real John Locke tumbled out of the crate when the group tipped it over. She said that it was found in the cargo hold of Ajira Airways Flight 316. ("The Incident, Part 2")

2007 (Season 6)

IlanaBeach

Ilana keeps watch on the statue remains from the beach ("LA X, Part 2")

Ilana demanded to see Jacob, a demand which Richard fervently denied, saying just because she knows what lies in the shadow of the statue doesn't mean she gets to see Jacob. After Ben murdered Jacob, the Man in Black told him to go outside and tell Richard that he wanted to speak to him. When Ben approached Richard, Ilana asked him if Jacob is alright and Ben responded by saying "I'm sorry, who are you?" in an attempt to avoid talking about what happened inside. However Richard told him to answer the question which prompted him to lie (again) by saying that Jacob is fine and that John wanted to speak to him. Richard, angry at Ben for lying to him dragged him to the spot where the corpse of the real Locke lay and threw him right next to him.

Ben was shocked to see John was dead all along, and as a result he kept staring at his corpse in disbelief. Bram, who was with Ilana lost his patience after waiting and grabbed Ben, forcefully bringing him along to the Statue. After Bram and her team were all killed at dawn, she witnessed the Man in Black emerge from the statue and prepared to fire upon him although Richard immediately ordered her and the others not to shoot at him. The Man in Black approached Richard and greeted him before brutally punching him on the face twice and knocking his stomach hard on his knee. Ilana watched helplessly as the fake Locke kidnapped an unconscious Richard and strolled past the corpse of the John Locke, leaving them behind at the Statue of Taweret. ("LA X, Part 1") ("LA X, Part 2")

Ilana 6x04

Ilana cries about Jacob's death. ("The Substitute")

Ilana was inside the foot of the statue crying for Jacob and her team. When Ben walked in on her she stood up and wiped her tears before turning around to look at him. Ilana demanded to know what had actually happened to her team. He told her that there is a chance that she won't believe him, however Ilana replied by saying "Try me". He told her that John Locke turned into a pillar of black smoke and killed them before his very eyes. When she asked him what happened to Jacob, Ben lied to her by saying that Man in Black killed him too, then kicked his body into the flames. Ilana gathered Jacob's ashes and exited the statue along with Ben.

Ilana inquired to Sun where Richard's group went, and Sun replied by saying that they went to the Temple. Ilana suggested that they go there as well, since it is the safest place on the island. However Sun said that she's doesn't want to go with her to the Temple. Ilana told her that if her husband, Jin is on the island then he will most likely be there. After Ilana had Sun convinced to go, she asked her what they'll be doing with Locke's body and added that Locke deserves a proper burial. Ilana agreed to it and led the group back to the beach camp for a funeral of sorts.

Ilana and Ben both carried Locke's corpse while they were on their way to the beach. Ben asked Ilana why she brought Locke's corpse with her and she replied by saying that the Others had to see the face of who they are up against. Ben asked her by "whats to stop what they are up against from changing his face", Ilana said that he can't change his face anymore because the Man in Black is "'stuck' this way" (as John Locke).

6x06 MeetingUpAgain

Ilana evacuates the candidates during the Temple Massacre. ("Sundown")

When they arrived at the old graveyard, Ilana and Sun prepared John's corpse for his burial while Ben and Frank dug the grave. She looked somewhat sad that John was dead. After Frank and Ben finished digging, they both carried John's corpse and gently placed him in the newly dug grave. Before they began burying Locke, Ilana asked if anyone wanted to give an eulogy, asking vehemently if any of them even knew him. No one seemed to have anything to say but, after a minute of silence, Ben decided to speak. Admitting in front of everyone that he was sorry that he murdered John Locke, everyone, including Ilana, shared shocked looks. ("The Substitute")

Ilana, along with Sun, Ben, and Frank arrived at the Temple at Sundown, during the Man in Black's attack on all the Others who had decided to stay. With all the chaos, Ilana and the others began searching for the candidates so that they may get them to safety. While searching through the Temple, Ilana stumbled upon Miles who was barricading himself from the Man in Black. Ilana immediately asked him where Shephard (Jack), Reyes (Hurley), and Ford (Sawyer) were. Miles told her that they all left and that he was the only one left. She wanted to make sure if all of the Candidates were safe, so she asked him another question which is if he knew where Jarrah (Sayid) was. He told her that he was at the pool-room.

6x07 MoveYouMurderer

Ilana orders Ben to dig his own grave. ("Dr. Linus")

While Ben went to get Sayid, Ilana led the group through the maze-like hallways and started to scan the Egyptian writings on the walls (the same ones that Hurley was looking at during the time that he had spent in the temple). Frank was unsure of what Ilana was doing so he asked her if she actually had a plan to get them out of the temple safely. As soon as Ilana saw the hieroglyph that she was looking for, she pushed on the wall and said "Yes, I have a plan", revealing a secret passage in which she and the others clambered in for refuge from the Man in Black amidst his massacre. ("Sundown") After leaving the Temple, Ilana and her group met up with Ben in the jungle. Ilana demanded to know where Jarrah is, Ben says it's unlikely he'll be joining them as he has just killed the Temple Master Dogen and his translator Lennon. Ilana decided to head back to the survivors' old beach camp and, along the way, she became suspicious that Ben might not have been telling the truth earlier when he told her the Man in Black had killed Jacob.

She asked Miles to listen to Jacob's dying thoughts from his ashes so she could found out how he died, and Miles revealed that it was Ben, not the Man in Black, who had killed Jacob. Ilana was extremely upset, and angry at Ben; she said that Jacob was the closest thing she ever had to a father. When the group reached the beach camp the next day, Ilana held Ben at gunpoint, chained him to a tree, and forced him to dig his own grave in retribution for the murder of Jacob. Ilana kept close watch over him as he dug, but at one point she walked a short distance away and ate a mango.

Normal dr-linus-377

Ilana is held on gunpoint by Ben. ("Dr. Linus")

During this time, the Man in Black came and offered Ben a place in his group, and somehow unlocked the shackles Ilana had put him in. Ben, not wanting to die, made a break for the jungle, and Ilana gave chase. She was catching up to Ben when he found a rifle the Man in Black had told him about, aimed it at Ilana, and forced her to drop her own weapon. Ben then explained to Ilana his reasons for killing Jacob: he had been angry at Jacob for ignoring him, and very distraught by the death of Alex. Ilana sympathized with these motivations because she, too, was angry over the death of a loved one, Jacob.

Ben then told her to leave him alone so that he may go away. She asked Ben where he was going, and he told her he was going to join the Man in Black because no one else would have him. Upon seeing Ben's guilt for his actions, Ilana replied that she would have him, then walked away, having apparently forgiven Ben for his misdeeds. After arriving back at the beach, Ilana broke down into tears. She was present during the reunion of Jack and Hurley with the rest of the group. She shook hands with the newcomers, whom she had never met before, although possibly recognised them as 2 of the other candidates. ("Dr. Linus")

6x10 WhereIsHe

Ilana is adamant that Richard will return. ("The Package")

The same night, Ilana, while sitting next to a campfire, relayed her prior meetings with Jacob before arriving on the island to her new allies, thus revealing that Richard was the one who supposedly knew what their next step should be, at least according to Jacob. Richard himself denied knowing anything and maintained they were all in Hell. Shortly afterwards, he abandoned the beach camp and Ilana decided that the best thing she could think of to do was to follow him. She believed that Jacob meant what he said and that Richard was lying, and indeed knew what they were supposed to do. ("Ab Aeterno")

Hurley left the campsite to go find Richard by himself. Though several people in Ilana's group doubted that Hurley would be able to find Richard and convince him to return to the campsite, Ilana was more relaxed, and adamant that Richard would return and insisted that they wait for him. Sometime later, Richard did indeed return to the camp with Hurley. Richard told them all to pack their bags because they needed to leave and go blow up the Ajira airplane on Hydra island, in order to keep the Man in Black from leaving the Island. ("The Package")

6X12 IlanasLastPlea

Ilana's last plea to her group, moments before her death. ("Everybody Loves Hugo")

As Hurley laid down flowers and spoke to Libby at her grave, Ilana came over to ask Hurley whether he was ready to leave for the Hydra island, and also told him of her plan to blow up the Ajira plane with dynamite she was going to retrieve from the Black Rock. She seemed unsure about whether it was the correct course of action, but stated again that Richard had told her what to do. She then inquired to Hurley about the grave he was kneeling at, and he complied by telling Ilana about his relationship with Libby and her death. Ilana looked concerned for Hurley and apologised for Libby's death.

At some point after visiting Hurley, Ilana travelled to the Black Rock and obtained four sticks of dynamite, planning to use it to destroy the plane. When she returned to the campsite, Hurley said that he felt that they should not blow up the plane as originally planned. Ilana insisted that they do so, as Richard said that they should, and Jacob had told her that Richard would know what to do. As she spoke with determination about their need to destroy the plane for their own safety, she filled her bag with bottles of water, and set her bag containing the dynamite firmly on the ground. The dynamite immediately exploded, and Ilana was killed instantly by the blast. ("Everybody Loves Hugo")

Post-death

Ilana'sStuff

Hurley looks through Ilana's possessions after her death. ("Everybody Loves Hugo")

Just after the dynamite blew up and killed her, Hurley began looking through her things, finding a book written in a foreign language and Jacob's ashes, which he took. Richard and Jack got into an argument about whether they should continue trying to blow up the Ajira plane with dynamite. Jack was adamant that the tragic events showed they shouldn't use the dynamite; Richard insisted they do so as, otherwise, Ilana's death would have been in vain.

Later, Ben commented to Jack and Sun that Ilana had been killed soon after she had told them they were candidates, saying that she had lived out her usefulness and that "The Island was done with her". He then commented that he wondered what would happen to them once the Island was finished with them. ("Everybody Loves Hugo")
