Synopsis

Flashback

File:3x06-KateKevinBed.jpg

Kate and Kevin in bed.

Kate's flashbacks begin just before she marries policeman Kevin Callis. It becomes apparent that this is happening after Kate killed her father, when Kevin calls her "Monica".

Settling into a life of idyllic domestic bliss, Kate calls Edward Mars to plead for the US Marshalls to stop chasing her. Mars guesses that Kate has got involved with a man, and tells her that he will stop chasing when she stops running. But then Mars tells Kate they "both know that isn't going to happen". Kate hangs up to avoid a phone trace.

Kate realises that she cannot possibly live the daydream of a happy-ever-after marriage: her past will catch up with her, and she is doomed to a life on the run. (She cannot get a passport to go on an overseas honeymoon, and a (negative) pregnancy test forces her to confront her inability to take on long-term commitment and responsibility). She confesses the truth about herself to Kevin Callis - having first drugged him to prevent other people suspecting he knew her real identity. As soon as her husband passes out, Kate puts in his hand the locket that his mother had given her on their wedding day, then she runs for it.

On the Hydra Island

3x06-JackCrazy

Jack talking to Ben about his tumor.

Jack is shown Ben's medical tests. Jack's prognosis is that Ben's death is certain without surgery 'Yesterday'. Ben assents to immediate surgery, but Jack scoffs and explains that he's not going to do it - because he doesn't trust the Others to keep their end of the bargain (freeing Jack, Kate and Sawyer). Ben says he is disappointed in Jack's decision.

Meanwhile, Danny explains to Kate that it is time for work, and Sawyer is "getting a day off." Kate says that she and Sawyer are a team, and that she won't work without him. Danny AND Sawyer reluctantly agree, and they go to the quarry.

3x06-Alex

Alex wants to find Karl.

During their shift at the quarry an (apparently automated) alarm announces a 'compound breach'. Pickett orders guards to immobilise Sawyer and Kate, then exchanges information by walkie-talkie - including, "Did the doctor get out again?", and "Well does he know?" Alex charges in, using a slingshot to fire stones at the guards, and urging Kate and Sawyer to "Go". Danny Pickett and Alex stand off, Danny pointing his gun at Alex, and Alex aiming her catapult at Danny. Alex dares Danny to shoot her, then asks, "What did you do to him Danny? Where is he?", and demands to speak to Ben. Danny stalls, and Alex is grabbed by another guard. As Alex is dragged away she warns Kate, "Whatever they tell you. don't believe them. They're going to kill your boyfriend, just like they killed mine".

Later, Juliet confers with Pickett before approaching Kate and asking her to put on a burlap sack hood. Kate responds defiantly, but acquiesces after Juliet says this is the only way to prevent Pickett from killing Sawyer.

3x06-KateJack

Kate and Jack are reunited.

Juliet brings Kate to the room on the other side of the glass wall from Jack, and leaves them in privacy. (Though we know Jack is aware of the camera, and later see Juliet and Ben watching Kate and Jack on the monitors). Jack says he's great and asks about Kate and Sawyer's welfare; Kate explains that they're being kept in outdoor cages and made to haul rocks for "something big."

Jack asks if Kate has been hurt, to which Kate starts to cry. As Jack begins to reassure her that things will be OK, Kate tells him he has to do the operation. Startled, Jack glances at the spy camera, then asks how the Others have persuaded Kate to urge him to do the surgery - what they offered her, what they did to her, how did they get her to ask him? When Kate replies, "Nothing", Jack demands, "Then what are you doing here?" Unable to contain her emotions, Kate answers that they've threatened to kill Sawyer.

Jack looks up at the camera before turning away in apparent frustration and anger. Kate apologies and insists that 'she' (presumably Juliet) promised that they (the Others) would let us (Jack, Kate and Sawyer) go if Jack did the operation soon. Jack asks Kate, rhetorically, "And you believe them?", to which Kate answers, "I have to".

Kate tries to plead with Jack, but he tells her, "We're done here". Kate tries to pursue the point, but Jack looks up at the camera and says (to Ben), "Hey! We're done here!", then turns away from Kate. In the monitoring room, Ben tells Juliet to take Kate away.

Kate is returned to her cage opposite Sawyer's, where she tells him that she saw Jack, and that he is being ordered to perform an operation on Ben. Sawyer reasonably asks, "Who's Ben?" to which Kate explains, "Henry, the man who brought us here." She becomes increasingly desperate at the idea of Pickett killing Sawyer -- pointing out that he's been looking for a reason to do so -- and climbs out of her cage. As Sawyer pleads with her to climb back in ("We've been through this"), she breaks off the lock to his cage and tells him to run. Surprisingly, no alarms sound when his cage is forcibly opened. When Sawyer refuses to escape, Kate demands to know why, and he tells her they are on a separate island, about two miles off shore from their island, "so unless you're a mermaid, or you've got a boat," there is nowhere for them to go. She is angry that he hasn't told her this sooner, to which he explains he wanted her to have some hope, that they would "have a damn chance."

3x06-KateSawyerSex

Kate and Sawyer finally express their feelings for each other

At this, she kisses him passionately, and the two are soon hot and heavy, kissing and removing each other's clothes. They have sex (off-screen), and afterward, as Sawyer pets her hair, he asks if she only said she loved him to get Pickett to stop beating him. She sits up, kisses Sawyer, and cuddles back into his arms. He smiles and says, "I love you too."

Meanwhile, Jack is lying on the table in his room when he hears static from the intercom. He approaches it and speaks into it, trying to get a response. Alex tells him, "Try the door." He finds that it's unlocked and begins exploring the hallways and rooms, where he finds some closed circuit TV monitors, then a room full of guns. He takes one of the handguns, checks to see that it is loaded, and returns to the monitors, where he sees Sawyer and Kate having a tender moment in each other's arms.

3x06-GoodnightBen

Ben on the operating table.

It is at this point Jack agrees to the surgery, presumably incensed after seeing Kate and Sawyer, telling Ben that when he's done, he wants off "this damn island." During the operation, Jack purposely cuts a small incision in Ben's kidney, giving him an estimated one hour to live, and demands the walkie-talkie so he can speak to Kate. Danny gives Kate the walkie-talkie just in time to save Sawyer's life. Jack tells Kate she has an hour head start, and asks her if she remembers the story he told her on the beach the day of the crash. Kate says she remembers. Jack directs her to call him on the radio when she is safe and to tell him the story from the beach as a way for her to prove she is safe. Kate is reluctant to leave without Jack, so he responds by yelling "Kate, damn it, RUN!".

On the main island

3x06-North

Eko's stick's hidden message to John.

Locke decides that they should bury Mr. Eko where he died, instead of taking him back to the beach and upsetting the others survivors since there have been so many deaths of late. He and Sayid venture back to the camp to get shovels.

Locke and Sayid have a conversation. Locke says he does not have a name for the monster, and that he believes Eko died for a reason, but he does not know it yet. At the end of the conversation they say they are going back to the beach camp, but they need to take a detour first. This detour can be assumed to where Locke picks up Eko's stick.

Locke holds a funeral for Mr. Eko at the place of his death, because he believes there have been enough funerals at the beach. He also discovers that, on Eko's stick, it says GEN 13:14 "LIFT UP YOUR EYES AND LOOK NORTH", with JOHN 3:05 carved directly below. John 3:05 is a quote of Jesus: "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit."

Trivia

  • According to the side of Kevin's police car, and the patch on his uniform, he and Kate lived in Dade County, Miami FL. Also, Kevin is seen wearing a Miami Heat tee-shirt.
  • When Kevin surprises Kate with the plane tickets to Costa Rica, they are for a flight on Oceanic Airlines, the same Airline that brought her to the island.
  • When Kate drugs Kevin and leaves his mother's necklace (representing Kate) in his left hand, this is reminiscent of Sun's lover Jae's death, as he clutches the pearl necklace (representing Sun) in his left hand.
  • When Kate says she and Sawyer are a team, explaining that he breaks the rocks and she hauls them, that's actually the reverse of the jobs they were given in The Glass Ballerina.
  • The two-way radios (Walkie) used by the Others are Motorola CP100. This is 2W power UHF or VHF radios. The power is allowing speaking distance of about 3 to 4 miles in open terrain. However, the jungle and the concrete building of the Hydra station will shorten the range significantly.
  • The handgun Jack selects from the Hydra armory is a Walther P-38, the same model Tom holds to Kate in The Hunting Party.
  • Her drugging of Kevin's drink in order to run away mirrors how she helped Sun drug Jin's drink so he couldn't run away on the raft. Or more like when Kate drugged Jack to make sure he got enough rest after trying to save Boone.
  • Kate mentions "Taco Night" which was also an important theme dinner at the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute as mentioned in the episode Dave.

Cultural references

  • In this episode, Nathan Fillion's character is drugged after finding himself married to a criminal with a fake name. In an episode of the TV series Firefly, Nathan Fillion's character is married to and then is drugged by a criminal with a fake name.
  • In another episode of Firefly, Nathan Fillion's character helps someone who is in trouble with Fredric Lehne's (Marshal Edward Mars) Firefly character.
  • Kate has a traditional Christian wedding in which the "Wedding March" is played. (Religion and ideologies, Music)
  • Kate's inability to maintain a romantic relationship while on the run is reminiscent of Maggie/Nina in the film Point of No Return, and The Bride/Beatrix Kiddo in the films Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2.

Recurring themes

  • Eko is buried. (Life and death)
  • Alex says that Karl was killed by the Others. (Life and death)
  • Pickett readies to kill Sawyer. (Life and death)
  • Jack threatens Ben with death. (Life and death)
  • Jack conned The Others by making them think he was helping Ben when he was really after Kate's escape. (Deceptions and cons)
  • Pickett says "Shephard wasn't even on Jacob's list". (Good and bad)
  • The flashbacks suggest Kate refused to leave Sawyer behind because she felt guilty about leaving her past love, Kevin. (Redemption)
  • Sawyer tells Kate that he loves her. This is the first time Sawyer has told anyone directly that he loved them since he tricked Cassidy into thinking he loved her. Sawyer's actions imply he is telling the truth about his love for Kate. (Redemption)
  • It rains while Pickett holds Sawyer at gunpoint, and when Kate calls Edward Mars (Rain)
  • Moments before surgery, Ben addresses the room that he'll "see [them] on the other side," just like Anthony Cooper said before kidney transplant surgery and Dave before he jumps off the cliff.(Life and Death)

Alex

  • During the alarm sequence at the work site, Pickett asks into the radio, "How did she (Alex) get over here?" This would seem to indicate that she was on the main island.
  • Before Ben goes under the knife, he asks Juliet if Alex asked about him. Alex could be Ben's biological or adoptive daughter.
  • It's possible that Ben (if he had a relationship with Danielle) said that Danielle could keep Alex, but we found out that she was taken by The Others when she was a baby so she knew that he is a liar.
    • Danielle would have recognized Ben and killed or interogated him herself before turning him over to the survivors. And although she did tell Sayid that Ben would lie to him for a long time, she didnt say who he was, kind of killing the "relationship" idea.
  • Alex is part of the con. She is being played by the Others to save Karl the same way Kate and Sawyer have been played on each other and Jack. This can be backed up by her voice being used on the faulty intercom to tell Jack to 'try the door', when Ben enters the room he fully expected to see Jack in the control room looking at the monitor, it was apparently planned, and Alex was used as part of that plan.

Ben

  • Ben might actually end up as the good guy for real, he was asking about Alex and if she wanted to see him (which she really did, but Pickett tied her up and took her away), Juliet said that Alex is fine and she said that Alex didn't ask for him, which gives the idea of her being the real bad "guy" in the ranks of the Others
  • Rose had cancer and Locke had a spine disorder, both of them have now got better, presumably healed by the island. Now Ben has cancer in his back, a combination of the two disorders now absent in the losties.
  • Ben said he was diagnosed with the tumor at least two days before Flight 815 crashed.
  • Ben may deceive Jack by fulfilling his promise to "get him the hell of this island" by simply returning him to the main island.

Locke

  • Locke views the inscription on Eko's Jesus Stick as another sign or signal for him to follow.
  • The fact that the inscription only includes the direction North (while the actual bible passage includes "north and south, east and west") and the juxtaposition of the reference to the book of John just below the passage, makes the entire passage appear to be "LIFT UP YOUR EYES AND LOOK NORTH JOHN". This would certainly add to the impression that this was a direct message intended for John.
  • The Passage in John refers to being saved only by being born again in Spirit by Baptism (specifically in water), He is likely south of the Hydra Island and needs to go north and through the water to do what ever he is to do.
  • A possible interpretation of "LIFT UP YOUR EYES" is to get your eyes to a higher height rather than just looking up. On the island this could be achieved by climbing a mountain. Once up there he would then look north. If the position of The Hydra island is to the north as predicted, this will mean he'll be able to see it easily when looking north from a high spot.
  • Locke will be going north.
  • Locke will find Otherville to the north.
  • Locke will find The Flame station to the north.
  • Locke will find The Hydra station/prison island to the north and find a way to make a crossing, probably by boat. This may be hinted at by the inclusion of John 3:05 and its reference to being "born of water."
  • Locke will find Patchy to the north.
  • "LIFT UP YOUR EYES AND LOOK NORTH" could be refering to the Glass Eye.

The Others

  • The Others planned for Jack to see Kate and Sawyer hooking up on the monitor to fuel his fire and push him into doing the surgery.
  • The others are well aware of the love triangle and were using it to their advantage, specifically, to save Ben's life.
  • After Jack refuses to perform the operation, Juliet tells Kate that she must convince Jack to do the surgery to save Sawyer's life. When Kate requests Jack to perform the surgery to save Sawyer's, Jack becomes very upset and tells her to leave. It was possible he was a bit jealous of what Kate would do for Sawyer.
  • Kate and Sawyer both realize that this may be Sawyer's last night and hook up. However, one may wonder without the pressure of Sawyer's life on the line, would these two people put their pride aside to express their feelings to each other (especially Kate who initiated kissing). If the others did not want Kate and Sawyer to get together, they could have easily stopped them as they were being monitored via TV. This may be evidence that the others wanted to push Kate and Sawyer into hooking up, and that they intended Jack to see this and get fired up even to the point of not caring for anyone else on the Island anymore and just leaving.
  • Their plan may have backfired when Jack made a small incision to Ben's kidney; Tom was looking genuinely frightened. It likely went according to plan right up until that moment.

Kate

  • Kate chose Sawyer over Jack because Sawyer is more like her, whereas Jack is more like Kevin. Sawyer understands what she's like; she runs, he cons. Life with Jack, however she may feel about him, would eventually boil down to things like taco nights, babies, and a honeymoon. All the normal things she realised she wasn't able to do with Kevin.
  • Kate chose Jack. She said she would not leave without him. This is why she did not run away when she had the chance with Sawyer.
  • Kate was saying "I won't leave you" to Sawyer, not to Jack. She was looking at Sawyer when she was saying it. Jack probably thought she meant him, but she meant Sawyer.
  • Kate is reluctant to run (especially without Jack) because she knows via Sawyer that there is no escape on the Hydra Island. She will only leave with Jack because that way they can all make it off the island without leaving one behind. Her reluctance might just be acknowledgment of the plan's futility.
  • Kate is pregnant after sleeping with Sawyer.
  • When Kate brings in the drugged drink to Kevin and he is working on his computer, he says he's working on the fugitive from Tampa. Sawyer is the fugitive (Tampa Job).

Jack vs. Sawyer

  • Jack does not seem particularly concerned that the Others are going to kill Sawyer.
    • Rubbish! Once Jack realises that Kate has been brought to 'persuade' him to do the operation on Ben, he gets angry about the Others' tactics. Then he realises that the threat against Sawyer leaves him with little choice or bargaining power.
  • Jack makes no effort to secure Sawyer's life at the end of the episode. Perhaps this is out of jealousy after seeing Sawyer and Kate sleeping together on the screens.
    • Jack is concerned about both Kate and Sawyer. He gives them a chance to escape while he may continue to be held captive. He doesn't know the island is another one, so he thinks Kate and Sawyer may make it. Though he might have felt jealous, his decision to do the surgery is after he saw the two together; therefore he seems to understand they feel some kind of "love" and sacrifices himself to let them go.
      • However, when Kate originally told Jack that "they" were going to kill Sawyer, Jack became angry and yelled "We're done here!" While he did happen to ask for Kate on the walkie-talkie just in time to save Sawyer's life, he did not know what was happening at the cages when he made the call. He did not mention Sawyer at any time during his conversation with Kate. There is no doubt of Jack's concern for her, but his concern for Sawyer is dubious.
        • Jack's plan was to get Kate and Sawyer free from wherever they were. When he (presumably) explained this to Tom, Tom would have immediately checked if Pickett was near Kate and Sawyer's cages.
  • Jack's escape plan only includes Kate.
  • Sawyer notably does not make any snide remarks and/or nicknames about Jack after Kate says she's seen him.
