Hugo Reyes, more commonly known by his nickname "Hurley", was one of the middle section survivors (seat 20G) of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. Hurley's father disappeared when he was ten and did not return until Hurley was 27. During his father's absence, Hurley developed an eating disorder, and later a traumatic accident landed him in a mental asylum, where he started seeing an imaginary person. He was overly conscious about his sanity and weight afterwards. While employed at Mr. Cluck's, Hurley won the lottery by playing the numbers given to him by Lenny. Due to a series of unfortunate incidents following his win, he believed himself to be plagued with bad luck because of the numbers and searched for an answer to the curse.
On the Island, Hurley was typically happy-go-lucky and kept up the spirits of his fellow survivors. He was also a voice of reason in the group and used his common sense to solve difficult situations. Eventually, Hurley found that he could not escape the Numbers, and after seeing them on the side of the Hatch believed that opening it would be a bad idea. He struggled with being given the task of dividing up the food in the Hatch and began seeing his old imaginary friend on the Island. Later, he was captured by the Others, along with Jack, Kate, and Sawyer as a part of Michael's betrayal, but was released to go back and warn the other survivors not to come for them. Back at camp, Hurley found an old DHARMA van which he was able to get running again with the help of Charlie, Sawyer, and Jin, restoring his and the rest of the survivors' optimism and creating a belief in him of self-created luck. He later used the van as a crucial part of the mission to rescue Sayid, Jin, and Bernard.
After Jack called the freighter for rescue, Hurley and five other survivors managed to escape the Island in a helicopter. However, they were forced to leave everyone else behind when Ben moved the Island. Hurley tried to carry on happily with his life, but began seeing visions of Charlie off the Island and struggled with accepting the lie they created. Eventually he was readmitted to the Santa Rosa Mental Institute, where he routinely conversed with Charlie and other deceased people. He was removed from Santa Rosa by Sayid and taken to a "safe house", where he was mistaken for a murderer. He later threw a Hot Pocket at Benjamin Linus and surrendered to authorities. Hurley was found innocent and released from prison, and was convinced by a man to return to the Island.
He boarded Ajira Flight 316 and was flashed to 1977, where he worked in the kitchen for the DHARMA Initiative. After the detonation of Jughead by Juliet, he time traveled to his original timeline. Soon afterward, the now-deceased Jacob began to appear to Hurley, first telling him to take the wounded Sayid to the Temple and then instructing him to take Jack to the Lighthouse. Hurley later acted as a medium between Richard and his deceased wife Isabella.
Hurley was confirmed to be one of Jacob's candidates by Jacob himself. He was visited and touched by Jacob while off the Island. Hurley's name appeared on the wall in the cliffside cave and the Lighthouse wheel as "8 - Reyes". Hurley eventually took over as protector of the island from Jack and hired Ben as an advisor. ("The End")
In the flash-sideways, Hurley was finally reunited with his murdered island lover, Elizabeth "Libby" Smith and along with their friends, they moved on.
Before the crash[]
Childhood[]
Young Hurley, minutes before his father's departure. ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")
Hugo Reyes was born to David and Carmen Reyes in Miami, Florida on December 29, 1978. ("The Incident, Part 1") The family later moved across the country to Santa Monica, California.
As a child, Hugo was very close to his father. They often went fishing together, but the activity they most enjoyed was fixing up an old Camaro. David allowed Hurley to rebel against his strict mother, Carmen, but Hugo witnessed his father's flighty nature as David left the family for 17 years without explanation. To deal with his father's absence, Hurley turned to food. ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")
Hurley once had a dog named Buster, who passed away. ("...And Found") Hurley told Walt he took 17th place in a backgammon tournament once, but it is unknown what age he was. ("All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")
Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute[]

Growing up, Hugo (also known as Hurley, for unrevealed reasons) along with 22 others, stepped onto a deck designed to hold eight people. The deck collapsed, killing two, and Hurley blamed his weight for the incident. In response to his guilt and deepening depression, Hurley's mother committed him to the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute. Hurley honed his ping pong skills in his mother's basement and at Santa Rosa. Also while at the Institute, Hurley played Connect Four with another patient, who repeated a series of six numbers over and over — 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. ("Dave") ("Numbers")
Dr. Brooks, a psychiatrist at Santa Rosa, tried to convince Hurley that he did not cause the deck collapse. Thinking Hurley was punishing himself for the accident by overeating, the doctor placed Hurley on a diet. But Hurley began hallucinating an imaginary friend, Dave, who urged him to keep eating. Dr. Brooks prescribed medicine for the hallucinations and eventually convinced Hurley of Dave's unreality by proving that he did not appear in photos. Hurley shut Dave out of his life by locking him outside the facility grounds during a Dave-inspired escape attempt. Hurley then began actively resolving the issues that had brought him to the institute. ("Dave")
Lottery win[]
After returning from Santa Rosa, Hurley moved back into his mother's home. His life fell into a rut, but Hurley seemed content getting his job back at Mr. Clucks, where he was good friends with Johnny, a co-worker, and worked under Randy, an annoying boss. His mother pestered him to find a girlfriend, but the insecure Hurley laughed off her suggestion, though he did have a crush on Starla, a record store employee. ("Numbers") ("Everybody Hates Hugo")

Hurley's numbers win the lottery. ("Numbers") (promotional still)
Hurley bought a $114 million lottery ticket using the numbers the Santa Rosa patient had repeated. He won but did not immediately claim the prize. He went back to work the next day but soon quit, sick of Randy's mockery and abuse. Johnny, admiring Hurley's gumption, quits minutes later in solidarity, and the two had a wild night of mischief, vandalizing Randy's yard. Hurley even successfully asked Starla out on a date. But when Johnny learned of Hurley's lottery win from the clerk who sold him the ticket, he felt betrayed. Their friendship ended, and Johnny and Starla ended up together. ("Numbers") ("Everybody Hates Hugo")
The win brought Hurley further bad luck. His grandfather died of a heart attack at a press conference to announce the win, and lightning struck the priest at his funeral. Hurley bought Mr. Clucks, but a meteorite destroyed one of the restaurants, killing a local news reporter and her cameraman who were filming a puff piece about Hurley. He bought his mother a mansion, but she fell and broke her ankle outside the house, which soon burned down. While in front of the house, Hurley was violently arrested by the police, who mistook him for a drug dealer. Working with a financial planner, Hurley bought a shoe company in Canada, but an accident there ended up killing eight people. These last two incidents only made Hurley richer, as the shoe company was overinsured and the LAPD was forced to pay him a large settlement for his wrongful arrest. When he went to meet with his accountant, a man committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the office building. Hurley's brother's wife left him for a waitress. Meanwhile, Hurley's father suddenly returned after 17 years, and though Carmen thought it was a blessing, Hurley realized his father was after the money and refused to forgive him for abandoning them. ("Numbers") ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")
Hurley now believed that the lottery money was cursed. Carmen accused him of blasphemy, and David too tried to shake him from this belief, hiring a psychic to perform an "exorcism." Hurley saw through the fraud, but he thought of a new possible origin for the curse: the numbers he'd used to win the lottery, rather than the money itself. He visited Santa Rosa and asked Leonard for their origin. Leonard ignored him until Hurley informed him that he used the numbers to win the lottery. Leonard then broke from his near-catatonic state and became hysterical, revealing that he'd heard the numbers from a man in Kalgoorlie, Australia. David warned Hurley that going there would answer nothing, and they could just give the money away if Hurley thought it cursed.("Numbers") ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")
Australia[]

Hurley visits Martha Toomey, searching for answers. ("Numbers")
Hurley traveled to Kalgoorlie to find Toomey but found only his wife, Martha. He learned that Sam had heard the numbers in a transmission 16 years earlier - a transmission, though he did not know it, that came from the Island's radio tower. Sam too had used the numbers to win a competition and had suffered a streak of bad luck afterward, eventually killing himself because of his belief that he was cursed. ("Numbers")
Hurley planned to return to Los Angeles on Oceanic Flight 815, but fate seemed to intervene that day to keep him off the plane. A power outage kept his alarm from waking him, his car's tire went flat, and he arrived at the wrong terminal. He was told that because of his size, he would have to purchase two tickets together, even though he did not have to do so on the way there. Determined to be home for his mother's birthday the following day, he offered $1600 to an old man to borrow his scooter and made his way to the correct gate. Hurley eventually arrived and the attendant reopened the doors for him. Thankful to have boarded the plane, Hurley gave Walt a thumbs-up and took his seat on the doomed flight. ("Exodus, Part 3")
On the Island[]
Days 1–44 (Season 1)[]

Hurley and Sayid introduce themselves to each other. ("Pilot, Part 2") (promotional still)
Right after the crash on the beach, Jack spotted Hurley among the wreckage and informed him that he must help and watch Claire, who was close to term on her pregnancy. Both Claire and Hurley were nearly killed by a falling piece of the plane when the wing broke apart. They were saved by Jack right before the wing hit the ground and exploded. That night, Hurley took upon himself the job of dividing the remaining food from the plane among the survivors. ("Pilot, Part 1")
On their second day on the Island, after being mocked by a survivor named Sawyer, he sat beside another survivor, an Iraqi man named Sayid, who was trying to fix the plane's transceiver. Hurley asked him about his abilities, and Sayid revealed that he was once a soldier in the Republican Guard.

Hurley introduces the first "Island Open" to Jack, Michael and Charlie. ("Solitary")
As Hurley was washing his clothes, Jin approached him and offered him some raw shellfish, but Hurley laughingly refused the food, insulting Jin. Later that day Jack enlisted Hurley's help with the injured U.S. Marshal who was impaled by a piece of metal from the plane. Hurley warned Jack that he was not good with blood, a comment which Jack ignored. During the improvised surgery, Hurley fainted, leaving all the work to Jack. ("Pilot, Part 2")
Hurley was the second survivor to see Kate's mugshot and find out that Kate was actually a fugitive. ("Tabula Rasa") He also decided to move to the caves that Jack found, which seemed perfect to live in. ("House of the Rising Sun") ("Arzt & Crafts")
After Hurley began to feel the stress among the survivors, he decided to build a golf course on the Island with some golf clubs Ethan found in one of the survivors' bags. The golf course, which was later used for a tournament, did indeed help relieve the stress. ("Solitary")
When Claire became convinced she was in danger and someone was after her, Hurley realized the need for a list of all the survivors. After talking Sawyer into giving him the flight manifest, Hurley created a census to figure out who everyone was. He discovered that the person he had met in the jungle and in the caves, Ethan Rom, was never on the plane. As he hurried back to the caves, an exhausted Sayid returned from his journey on which he met the French woman who had been living on the Island for 16 years. Sayid warned Jack about the other people who lived on the Island. Hurley confirmed his warning when he revealed to Jack that Ethan was one of these Others. ("Raised by Another")

Hurley yells at Jin to pee on his foot. ("Hearts and Minds")
A few days later, after Ethan disappeared and kidnapped Claire, Hurley stepped on a sea urchin while trying to fish. The only person near him was Jin, who refused to help him, in retribution for Hurley's reaction on their second day on the Island. Eventually, Hurley and Jin made a deal—if Hurley would drink a cure Jin made for Hurley's wound, Jin would give him a fresh fish. Although Hurley threw up the medicine, he got his fish, and the quarrel between the two was finally resolved. ("Hearts and Minds")
While he was looking at Danielle's notes, which Sayid had stolen from her, Hurley noticed one on which Danielle had written the familiar numbers over and over. After Sayid refused to tell him the way to her shelter, Hurley took off, claiming he wanted to find her to get a battery for the raft that Michael was building. He found the cable Sayid described and followed it into the jungle. ("Numbers")

Hurley shows Danielle her note he found, with the numbers on it. ("Numbers")
On his way, Charlie, Sayid and Jack caught up with him and decided to go with him. They reached a rope bridge, which collapsed after Hurley and Charlie walked over it to the other side of the Island. They kept going, although Jack ordered them to wait for him. They were attacked by Danielle, who shot at them from afar. Hurley, running away, bumped into her and told her his story, and asked her to confirm that the Numbers were cursed. She told him that she and her team had heard a transmission that kept saying the Numbers, and that was what brought her to the Island. After their arrival her group got sick, and she had to kill them all. Soon afterward her baby was kidnapped. She eventually admitted that the Numbers were cursed. Hurley hugged her in response and thanked her. When he met up with Jack, Sayid, and Charlie, he gave them a battery Danielle had given him and told Sayid she said "hey." ("Numbers")

Hurley and Locke hear the Monster heading the opposite way. ("Exodus, Part 1")
Hurley decided to join the journey to the Black Rock, an old ship where dynamite could be found to blow open the Hatch's metal door that was found in the ground by Locke. After Danielle arrived to the Losties' camp and warned them the Others were coming, Jack decided to hide the other castaways in the Hatch. The group included him, Jack, Kate, Locke, and a bitter survivor named Leslie Arzt, who wanted to be part of the "cool guys" for the first time. ("Exodus, Part 1")
On their way, the group heard the Monster moving near them. Hurley was stopped from running away by Locke, who believed (correctly) that it was moving the other way. Once they reached the ship, Hurley decided to wait outside with Arzt, who told him his back story and complained about the unfair conditions among the survivors.

Hurley finds the numbers on the hatch. ("Exodus, Part 2")
When the rest of the party finally came out with the dynamite, Arzt quickly took over, claiming that as a science teacher he was the most knowledgeable about dynamite. As he taught the rest of the group how to handle the dynamite, one of the sticks exploded in Arzt's hands, blowing him up. Hurley believed that, once again, this crisis was his fault. ("Exodus, Part 2")
On their way back to the Hatch, Hurley started to murmur the Numbers. Kate heard him whispering "23", and told him about this number's meaning in her life. Hurley claimed that it was just a number. At the Hatch, Hurley brought a flashlight to aid Locke and Jack with setting up the dynamite, but the flashlight fell and lit the side of the Hatch door, where the Numbers were engraved into the metal. Now believing that only evil could be found in there, Hurley tried to stop Locke by shouting, "The Numbers are bad!", but was tackled by Jack just as the dynamite blew the door. ("Exodus, Part 3")
Days 44–67 (Season 2)[]

Hurley sets the dynamite, determined blowing up the Swan's pantry. ("Everybody Hates Hugo")
After the opening of the Hatch, which housed the Swan Station, Hurley saw that his numbers were the code to be entered into an old computer every 108 minutes for then-unknown purposes, (Desmond, the Swan's previous occupant, claimed it was 'saving the world'). ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")
As most of the leading survivors took turns in the Hatch, Jack told Hurley to complete an inventory of the food found in the Swan's storeroom. Hurley had a dream where he was eating profuse amounts of food in the Swan's pantry and then was confronted by Jin (who seemed to be speaking perfect English) and a man in a chicken suit. Jin warned Hurley that everything was going to change, reminding Hurley of his lottery win. Charlie began to question his friendship with Hurley after he refused to give Charlie a jar of peanut butter, and Kate took a bottle of shampoo which Hurley had refused to let her have. These experiences led Hurley to decide to destroy the storeroom with the Black Rock's dynamite, but his enthusiasm for the plan waned following a talk with Rose and memories about his past. Eventually he dropped the idea and informed Jack that every survivor should just take what they needed, since sharing the food equally was impossible. ("Everybody Hates Hugo")

Hurley asks Libby where he knows her from. ("Fire + Water")
When Sawyer, Jin, and Michael returned to camp with the Tailies, Hurley started to grow close to one of the new band of survivors, a woman named Libby. As an act of kindness, he helped her set up her tent. Believing he had a chance at a romantic relationship with her, Hurley sought advice from Charlie about women, describing Libby as cute in an "I've-been-terrorized-by-the-Others-for-40-days" kind of way. Sawyer somewhat uncharacteristically lent him a hand and arranged a private meeting between Libby and Hurley in the laundry room of the Swan. While there, Hurley began to suspect that he knew Libby from somewhere in his past. Libby offered that when he entered the plane he stepped on her foot (though it was later revealed that Libby had, in fact, been institutionalized at Santa Rosa along with Hurley). To distract Hurley from this thought, Libby decided to try on one of the shirts she had found. Hurley agreed and commented that she looked "awesome". ("The 23rd Psalm") ("The Hunting Party") ("Fire + Water")

Hurley is blackmailed by Sawyer. ("One of Them")
Hurley had a secret stash of food he had apparently stolen from the Swan. Sawyer eventually discovered the stash and threatened to tell the other survivors about it unless Hurley helped him find a tree frog whose incessant croaking was irritating him. During their search, Sawyer continued his custom and referred to Hurley through various nicknames, all of which were somehow connected to his weight. Hurley eventually confronted Sawyer and said he knew he was fat and that he didn't care if Sawyer told the rest of the survivors about his food stash because at least people liked him, implying that people did not like Sawyer. Sawyer then apologized to Hurley (a first) and begged for his help with the frog. When the two finally found the tree frog, Hurley suggested that he take it to somewhere Sawyer could not hear it. Sawyer, however, simply squashed the tree frog. ("One of Them")

Hurley and Libby began to exercise together, and, although Hurley wanted to quit, Libby kept him going. One day he confessed that he was sick and showed her his food stash. Upon her advice, he began to destroy it, leading them to rip open and scatter all the containers and packets. As they almost kissed, Jin and Sun showed up, informing them that something had been found in the jungle. Hurley and Libby followed them and found the supply drop, including huge supplies of food. Hurley began to show signs of stress similar to those he experienced after the accident. He noticed a familiar face behind one of the survivors--Dave, the imaginary friend he had locked outside the Santa Rosa Institute. Hurley chased Dave into the jungle, but quickly fell down, and was stunned to find one of Dave's slippers.

Dave tells Hurley that the only way to wake up, is by jumping off a cliff. ("Dave")
Hurley asked Sawyer if he had his medication in his medical stash, leading the hoarder to decline, not knowing what his prescription was for. Hurley explained it was used when one saw things that were not supposed to be there, which led Sawyer to taunt him and brand him 'crazy.' Hurley was riled to the point of attacking him, flooring Sawyer and virtually destroying his tent in the process. After the two were separated by Jin (who seemed somewhat amused at Sawyer's comeuppance), Hurley decided to move back to the caves. On his way there, Dave appeared again, convincing Hurley that the Island was all in his head and that all the events that had occurred since Hurley aborted their "escape attempt," which had signaled the beginning of Hurley's recovery, were only a dream. Dave suggested that if Hurley jumped off a cliff, he would wake up back at the hospital. After Dave jumped and disappeared into the ocean with a large splash, Hurley prepared to follow suit, but Libby, who had followed him, stopped him before he followed Dave's example. Libby assured Hurley that everything on the Island was really happening, and the two kissed. ("Dave")

Hurley attempts to find the perfect beach for his picnic with Libby. ("Two for the Road")
After their kiss, Hurley and Libby began a romantic relationship. With help from Sayid, Hurley arranged a picnic for the two of them on the same beautiful beach where Sayid and Shannon had visited on the eve of Boone's death. Hurley trekked around the Island with Libby, struggling to find Sayid's proposed location, only to wind back up at the Losties' camp. Libby said they should have their picnic there and went to the Swan to get some blankets, while Hurley went to find some wine. Hurley sneaked into Rose and Bernard's tent and took a bottle of DHARMA wine. On his way out he ran into Neil, who revealed that he also was interested in Libby. Down at the Swan, Libby witnessed Michael's murder of Ana Lucia and was then also shot. Michael would later refer to his shooting Libby as "an accident". ("Two for the Road") ("The Adventures of Hurley and Frogurt")

Jack, Sawyer, and Kate attempted to save Libby, helping her to regain consciousness only to eventually die of shock at the sight of Michael (Michael had framed the imprisoned Other, then known as Henry Gale and later as Benjamin Linus, for Ana Lucia's murder and for Michael's self-inflicted bullet wound to cover up his intentional release of Henry/Ben, which was part of a "trade" with the Others for his son, Walt.) Libby finally died with Hurley at her bedside holding her hand and tearfully apologizing for forgetting the blankets. ("?")
Hurley dug Libby's grave while Kate dug Ana Lucia's. Michael asked Hurley to join him on his journey to get Walt back from the Others, along with Kate, Jack, and Sawyer (he was in fact initiating the second part of the agreed 'trade' for his son's safety). Hurley at first declined, but during the funeral he told Michael he would help him, believing that the Others, who kidnapped Walt, also killed Libby. ("Three Minutes")

Ms. Klugh sends Hurley with a message. ("Live Together, Die Alone, Part 2").
The next day, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley followed Michael to the Others' camp. On their way, a large bird swooped over the group, shrieking a call that sounded like "Hurley!" Hurley asked the rest of the group if he had heard right. Sawyer facetiously answered that the bird did shriek Hurley's name right after it "crapped gold". ("Live Together, Die Alone, Part 1")
Once they reached a capsule dump (most likely coming from the Pearl, which Locke and Mr. Eko had previously discovered), the four survivors were attacked by the Others. They were taken to Pala Ferry, where they were exchanged for Walt, who reunited with Michael. His former friends looked on gagged and bound, stunned at his actions. The father and son left the Island with the Others' boat, while Hurley was freed by the mysterious Ms. Klugh, who told him to return to his camp and tell his people they must never come to the other side of the Island. Hurley hesitated, but Jack nodded, telling him to go. He left the Pala Ferry landing knowing that bearing 325 was the only way off the Island. ("Live Together, Die Alone, Part 2")
Days 69–91 (Season 3)[]

Hurley updates Desmond on the recent events. ("Further Instructions")
As Hurley hiked back to the beach camp after being released by the Others at the dock, he came across Locke and Charlie, who were looking for Eko. He told them what happened, including that Henry was actually their leader. They warned Hurley about the polar bear that had chased them and sent him back to camp. Hurley later came across a naked Desmond running through the forest. Hurley, along with Charlie, became the first person to realize Desmond could predict the future when Desmond mentioned a speech by Locke that had not yet occurred. ("Further Instructions")

Hurley claims that Desmond can see the future. ("Flashes Before Your Eyes")
Hurley and Charlie decided to go through Sawyer's stash, looking for food and whatever else they could find. Suddenly Desmond approached and asked if they could go with him. The trio traveled into the jungle, where Locke and Sayid were waiting. While Locke explained what had happened to Mr. Eko, Hurley noticed that Desmond was acting weird. When he asked what was wrong with him, Desmond ran off toward the beach. The rest of the group ran after him, and when they reached the beach they saw Desmond swimming out to rescue Claire, who had been out swimming and had lost consciousness. Desmond brought her back to shore and revived her with CPR. Charlie asked how Desmond knew she was drowning, and Hurley replied that he believed Desmond could see the future. ("Flashes Before Your Eyes")
Later that day, Hurley asked Locke, who was busy fishing, if he received super powers after the Swan's implosion. He revealed to Locke his belief that Desmond could see the future, but Locke ignored him.

Hurley asks for help from his fellow survivors to fix the van. ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")
Trying to get Desmond to reveal how he knew about Claire, Hurley went with Charlie and tried to get Desmond drunk. Once Desmond was completely drunk, Charlie tried to pry the information out of him. However, when Charlie called Desmond a coward a fight ensued, which Hurley was quick to break up. He and Charlie helped Desmond back to his tent, where they set him down, and Hurley left him and Charlie alone ("Flashes Before Your Eyes").
The next day, Hurley revisited Libby's grave and talked to her about his struggles on the Island and how much he missed her. Afterward, Hurley saw Vincent carrying a skeleton's arm with its hand clutching a key. Vincent ran into the woods, and Hurley followed, discovering an old Volkswagen bus. He rushed back to camp and told everyone about his new find. Nobody wanted to help him fix the car except Jin, although he did not understand Hurley's words. ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")

Hurley finally understands that he can make his own luck. ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")
In the van Hurley and Jin found a corpse, some documents, a road map, and a large amount of DHARMA beer. They were then joined by Sawyer, who had made his way back from Hydra Island with Kate. He demanded to know where his stuff was, but his anger disappeared with Hurley's hug. Together the trio lifted the van up and started to try to reactivate it. ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")
Hurley enlisted Charlie's help, trying to spark some hope in him. They decided to roll the van down a hill which had some large black rocks at the bottom. Charlie felt he was testing his fate. Right before hitting the rocks, Hurley remembered his father's saying that he created his own fate. The van came back to life, and they passed the rocks safely. After they left, Hurley stayed in the van for awhile, thinking about the fact that the Numbers' curse might have been lifted from him. ("Tricia Tanaka Is Dead")

Hurley battles Sawyer in a ping-pong match for various stakes. ("Enter 77")
The next day, the survivors found the ping-pong table that was blown out of the Swan by the discharge. They decided to play, but could not find the ball. Sawyer wanted to win back his stash, but was defeated by Hurley, who used to play ping-pong every day at his mother's house, and had to stop using nicknames for a week. Hurley returned Sawyer's porn stash, telling him not to worry about Kate, who was safe with Locke and Sayid. ("Enter 77")
He was again playing ping-pong with Sawyer when Nikki staggered out of the jungle, collapsed in front of them, and apparently died. Misinterpreting her final words as "Paulo lies," they sought Paulo and found him also apparently dead. Hurley treated it as a murder investigation and interrogated Desmond, who revealed that Nikki and Sawyer had argued. Questioning Sawyer, he learned that Nikki had tried to get a gun from him but failed. He said the eulogy over their bodies and he and Sawyer buried them, not noticing that Nikki, having only been paralyzed by spider venom, had revived. ("Exposé")

Hurley is sent by the survivors to supervise Juliet. ("One of Us")
After burying Nikki and Paulo, Hurley warned Sawyer that his attitude had led to a vote upon banishment the following day and that he should try to make amends for his past actions. While reluctant at first, Sawyer eventually agreed, performing good deeds and earning the gratitude of most of the camp. However, Hurley's claim of a banishment vote was simply a con, designed to force Sawyer into taking a leadership role (as Jack, Sayid, Kate, and Locke were all away from camp) and people were looking at him to fill it ("Left Behind").
After Juliet arrived at the beach camp, Hurley was sent to talk to her so he could keep an eye on her. He asked why she wasn't there when he, Jack, Kate, and Sawyer were kidnapped, and talked to her about Ethan's previous infiltration of the camp, pointing out to Juliet the spot where they had buried his body. ("One of Us")

Hurley hears from Naomi that there were no survivors of Flight 815. ("D.O.C.")
Following a vision of Desmond's, Hurley accompanied him, Charlie, and Jin on a trip into the jungle during which they heard and saw a helicopter go down. When daylight came they searched for it. During an argument between Hurley and Charlie over Superman and Flash, Charlie was almost killed by an arrow trap. ("Catch-22")
Hurley watched over Naomi, the ejected pilot of the helicopter, after Mikhail Bakunin mysteriously appeared to tend to her wounds. She regained consciousness, and Hurley told her they were the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 and started to ask if she was there to rescue them. He was shocked at Naomi's response that it was not possible for them to be the survivors of Oceanic 815, because the plane had been found and "There were no survivors. They were all dead." ("D.O.C.")

Charlie hugs Hurley for the final time. ("Greatest Hits")
Hurley was seen with Jin while Sawyer went to the bathroom. The next day, Hurley told Sayid about Naomi. Later, Kate found Hurley and Sayid attempting to fix the satellite phone. ("The Brig")
The next day, Hurley was on the beach and yelled to Sayid when he saw Karl running up the beach. Soon after, Hurley saw Charlie and Desmond leaving on the boat to travel to the Looking Glass station. Hurley wanted to go, but Charlie told him he was too fat and wouldn't fit on the boat. Charlie hugged Hurley, and the boat departed. As camp was getting ready to leave, Hurley offered to help Claire with Aaron.

Sawyer orders Hurley to stay in the van, seconds after killing Pryce. ("Through the Looking Glass, Part 1")
Claire and Hurley walked away together. ("Greatest Hits")
Hurley left with the rest of the camp, but when they only heard two explosions instead of the expected three, he tried to join Sawyer and Juliet, who were returning to camp to find out the situation. All three rebuffed him, but he proved his value by driving the DHARMA Van over and killing Ryan Pryce, buying enough time for Sayid and Sawyer to take out the Others. However, while he was willing to kill the Others to save his friends, he did not approve of Sawyer murdering Tom after he had surrendered. ("Through the Looking Glass, Part 2")
Days 91–108 (Season 4)[]

Hurley learns of Charlie's death. ("The Beginning of the End")
Immediately after the rescue of Sayid, Jin, and Bernard, Hurley used a captured walkie-talkie to warn the remaining Others to stay away from their beach. Instead, he reached Jack on Ben's walkie-talkie. Hurley was overjoyed when Jack informed him that the ship had been contacted and a rescue party was on the way. With Bernard's encouragement, he did a "cannonball" into the ocean. When he surfaced, he saw Desmond returning and immediately noticed Charlie's absence. He tried to find out what had happened, but everyone was busy arguing about whether to call and warn Jack about the freighter, causing Hurley to shout, "Where's Charlie?!" Desmond sorrowfully informed him about his friend's death and his final warning. Sawyer wanted to call and warn Jack, but Sayid was convinced that their transmissions were being monitored. When Sawyer was about to call anyway, Hurley grabbed the walkie and threw it into the water. He then said that they'd better get going, and he the rest of the group armed themselves and headed into the jungle to find Jack and everyone else.

Hurley delivers the news of Charlie's death to Claire. ("The Beginning of the End")
After rebuffing Sawyer's attempt to talk about Charlie's death, Hurley fell behind the group and got lost. He heard strange noises and whispers, then saw a cabin in the woods. He carefully approached and looked inside, seeing the dark figure of a man in a rocking chair. Suddenly an eye appeared in the window, causing Hurley to shout and run away. But after running some distance, he saw the cabin in front of him again. The cabin door creaked open. He closed his eyes and told himself that what he was seeing was not real, and when he opened his eyes, the cabin was gone. He tripped and fell on his back, and was surprised to look up and see Locke standing over him.
Hurley and Locke discussed Charlie's message and agreed that calling the boat was a mistake. They headed off to find the rest of the group again, believing that they had to warn the others as soon as possible. After finding them, Hurley informed Claire of Charlie's death. They hugged and cried, and Hurley tearfully said, "He was trying to help us."

Hurley chooses to follow Locke instead of Jack. ("The Beginning of the End")
When Jack declared that nobody would accompany Locke because he was "crazy," Hurley was the first to support Locke. He gave a speech about Charlie, saying that he went to the Looking Glass to help the group and was successful, but then something caused him to change his mind. Crying, he pointed out that the last thing Charlie did was to warn them about the people on the boat. He announced that he would listen to Charlie, and went with Locke to the Barracks. Several others, including Claire, followed his lead. ("The Beginning of the End")
When Locke announced that the group had to stop at a cabin before continuing to the barracks, Hurley, sounding confused, said that the cabin was in the other direction. When Locke and Ben gave him confused looks (thinking that he shouldn't have seen the cabin), Hurley awkwardly said that he meant the plane's cabin. He was present when the group found Charlotte and when Ben revealed the information he knew about her. ("Confirmed Dead")

Hurley pretends to be abandoned by Locke and his followers. ("The Economist")
Hurley initially disagreed with Locke's decision to keep Charlotte hostage; however, he participated in a ruse to capture the members of Jack's group trying to rescue Charlotte. Hurley hid in a closet in one of the barracks houses, yelling for help. When he was discovered by Sayid, Kate, and Miles, he falsely told them that Locke had abandoned him. After Hurley won their trust, Sawyer and Locke were able to find everyone else. Hurley apologized for the deception and revealed that he was still a member of Locke's group. ("The Economist")
As Hurley was carrying food to Miles, who was imprisoned in the boathouse, Kate offered to do it instead. Hurley was thankful but accidentally disclosed Miles' location to Kate. Kate promised not to tell and went to the boathouse. Hurley was later seen living with Sawyer, watching movies on television. ("Eggtown") Later on, Hurley was playing horseshoes with Sawyer when he saw Ben out of his own imprisonment. ("The Other Woman") Hurley was also present at the group meeting at Locke's house, where he learned that the freighter's crew planned to kill everyone on the Island after they captured Ben. ("Meet Kevin Johnson")

Hurley decides to join Locke, but promises Sawyer he will return. ("The Shape of Things to Come")
Hurley was playing RISK with Sawyer and Locke when the phone alert rang. He picked up Aaron and hid in Ben's house with everyone. He was the first to notice that Claire's house had been blown up and placed Aaron in a safe, makeshift crib. Once Sawyer arrived back with a disoriented Claire, Ben refused to open the door for them. However, Hurley broke the window to let them in, even with Ben urging him not to. Later, Hurley followed Ben's instructions and fled the house with everyone else. When they went outside and saw the Monster, he asked "Did you call that thing?" After witnessing the impending attack, he, Sawyer, Claire, and Miles escaped to the treeline. Once Ben caught up to them, Locke and Sawyer argued over who was keeping Hurley. Sawyer decided he was going back to Jack and the beach. Hurley convinced them to stop arguing and went with Locke and Benjamin to find Jacob, and promising Sawyer he would return. ("The Shape of Things to Come")

Hurley, Locke, and Ben argue on the right route for Jacob's cabin. ("Cabin Fever")
Following Ben and Locke through the jungle, Hurley began asking questions about the cabin, eventually asking Ben how much longer it would take to reach the cabin. Ben said that since Hurley was the last one who had seen the cabin, he was following Hurley. Hurley was less than happy about this, and when settling down to camp, expressed fear about what would happen when the mercenary team returned. The next morning, Hurley hypothesized that the reason that he, Locke, and Ben could see the cabin was that they were the "craziest." Locke then revealed that they were traveling to the mass grave, and informed Hurley of what had happened to the DHARMA Initiative: Ben. While Locke rummaged in the mass grave for Horace's corpse, Hurley questioned Ben about his actions in the purge. Ben denied that the purge was his decision. After Locke returned, he apologized to Hurley for bringing him along and offered him a chance to return to the beach camp. Hurley refused, and as soon as he was out of earshot, Ben congratulated John for his manipulative skills. Upon reaching the cabin, Locke went in alone while Ben and Hurley waited outside. During the awkward time spent waiting, Hurley offered half of an Apollo Bar to Ben, who accepted. Upon Locke's emergence from the cabin, Locke told them that they needed to move the Island. ("Cabin Fever")

Hurley and Locke look on as Ben surrenders himself to Keamy. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1")
The three then journeyed to the Orchid. From behind some rocks Ben removed a hidden case containing several items including crackers, which Locke threw to Hurley. Hurley began to eat them before being informed by Ben that they were fifteen years old. Hurley realized that moving the Island would also move the mercenaries hunting them, a fact Ben said he was "working on." He was then told by Ben and Locke that it was too late for him to get off the Island. When they reached the Orchid, Hurley and Locke watched helplessly as Ben surrendered to Keamy and the other mercenaries. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1")
Hurley met Jack and Sawyer as they arrived at the Orchid's greenhouse. They caught up with Locke, and Hurley told Jack not to go to the helicopter right away, as Keamy and his men were taking Ben there. Hurley thanked Sawyer for coming back for him and asked if Claire and Aaron were fine, but got no answer. They both left with Jack and headed to the helicopter, where Hurley happily greeted Sayid. After releasing Lapidus from handcuffs, they all boarded the helicopter and flew to the Kahana.

Hurley spots the Kahana from the chopper. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 3")
Over the ocean Lapidus noticed a fuel leak, so they started to get rid of all the extra weight. After tossing out the loose equipment, Lapidus said he would feel better if they were "a few hundred pounds lighter", which caused Hurley to look worried. Sawyer whispered something in Kate's ear, kissed her and jumped out, swimming back to the Island. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 2") Soon afterward, Hurley spotted the freighter and they began to land. Desmond frantically warned them about the bomb, but Frank landed anyway, needing to refill the tank and patch up the leak. Everyone got back on board, including Desmond and Sun. Sun begged them to wait for Jin, but Frank took off right away. Moments later the freighter exploded. With no other place to land, they started to go back to the Island, but a bright light flooded the sky and the Island vanished.

Hurley is amazed at how Locke moved the Island. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 3")
Low on fuel, the helicopter crashed into the ocean and they all swam to the life raft thrown in the water by Sayid. Hurley helped get Aaron and Desmond onto the raft. Floating on the current, Hurley mentioned he was amazed that Locke really moved the Island, whereupon Jack argued with him, wit. Hurley challenging him to provide a better explanation for what they had just seen. Lapidus noticed a light in front of them, which turned out to be Penelope Widmore's boat. As their rescue became imminent, Jack told them to lie about everything that happened since the crash, saying it was the only way to protect the ones that hadn't come back. Kate said they wouldn't be able to pull it off, but Jack told her to let him do the talking. A week later, still on Penny's boat, Sayid reaffirmed to Hurley that "it is the only way to keep them safe". The Oceanic Six got on a life raft and headed to the Island of Sumba. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 3")
After the Island[]
Post-rescue[]

Upon landing in Hawaii, Hurley was greeted by his mother and his father. Some time later, he opened the door to his house and he heard whispers like on the Island. These whispers, however, came from a large group of friends and family surprising him with a birthday party. His father gave him the restored Camaro as a birthday present; however, upon noticing the Numbers on the odometer and trip counter, Hurley ran off in panic. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 1")
In July of 2005, Hurley traveled to Korea to see Sun following the birth of Ji Yeon. Upon his arrival, Hurley asked Sun whether anyone else was coming. When Sun said no, Hurley mysteriously replied, "Good!" Sun showed off her newborn, Ji Yeon Kwon, to Hurley, who then suggested, "Let's go see Jin." Hurley, Sun, and the baby all traveled to a cemetery where they viewed Jin's grave. ("Ji Yeon")
Seeing Charlie[]
Hurley was happy for "a while" after their rescue, until he saw Charlie's ghost sometime after Ji Yeon's birth in the summer of 2005. ("Something Nice Back Home")

The LAPD chasing Hurley in the Camaro ("The Beginning of the End")
Months after this, when Hurley stopped being happy, he was seen in a convenience store purchasing a slushie and some beef jerky, when he suddenly saw something (later inferred to be Charlie, one of his regular occurrence visits) and "freaked out," knocking over a shelf and running out of the store. Hurley jumped into his newly restored Camaro and sped away.
This escalated into a full-on car chase with the LAPD which was carried live on the local news, which Jack watched over a screwdriver breakfast. Hurley eventually crashed his Camaro and tried to flee the scene on foot. He was quickly caught, and while being apprehended began shouting that he was one of the "Oceanic 6." All this took place in front of Hurley's former boss/employee, Randy Nations, who was filming the crash and the arrest.

Hurley yelling for help, believing the station is flooded. ("The Beginning of the End")
After being apprehended, Hurley was taken to the police station, where he was interrogated by Detective "Big Mike" Walton, former partner of officer Ana Lucia Cortez of the LAPD. After lying to Walton about never having met Ana Lucia, Hurley was left alone and, while looking at the interrogation room glass, had a hallucination of the ocean behind the window and Charlie Pace swimming up to it with the words "They need you" written on his hand. The force of Charlie's hand hitting the window broke the glass and began flooding the room.
As Hurley banged on the door and yelled for help, Walton came rushing back in. Hurley turned and realized the window was unbroken and they were not underwater. Walton threatened to have Hurley institutionalized, and was surprised to see that Hurley was relieved to go back to the mental hospital. ("The Beginning of the End")
Return to Santa Rosa (2005—2007)[]

Charlie claims that "they need you." ("The Beginning of the End")
Hurley was once more institutionalized at the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute, where he stayed for the next two years. ("Because You Left") When he first got there, he was visited by Matthew Abaddon, who falsely identified himself as an attorney for Oceanic Airlines. ("The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham")
He sympathized with Hurley's recent legal troubles and offered to move him to a nicer facility. Hurley turned the offer down, saying he was okay. When Abaddon asked, "Are you okay, Mr. Reyes?" Hurley got suspicious and asked Abaddon for identification. Abaddon began aggressively questioning Hurley, asking, "Are they still alive?", before Hurley began shouting for help and Abaddon made a quick exit.
Hurley was also visited by Charlie in a fully corporeal form, possibly even visible to one of the other patients. Hurley pointed out that Charlie was dead, to which Charlie responded, "I'm dead, but I'm also here." Charlie told Hurley that "they" needed him, apparently referring to the people still on the Island.

Hurley and Jack discuss their lives, and play HORSE. ("The Beginning of the End")
Hurley repeatedly said, "You're not here," closed his eyes, and counted to five. When he opened them, Charlie had disappeared without a trace.
Finally, Hurley was visited by Jack in the gym of the mental hospital. As they were playing Horse, the two old friends had an awkward conversation. Hurley seemed to make each shot with ease, no matter how difficult it was. Jack asked, "Do you ever miss?" and Hurley responded, "I'm just lucky." The uncomfortable conversation made Hurley suspicious of Jack's motive for the visit. He accused Jack of checking up on him to make sure he wouldn't tell their secret. He apologized to Jack for joining Locke's group heading to the barracks instead of staying with him when the camp separated. Hurley told Jack that he thought they had made a mistake by leaving the Island. ("The Beginning of the End")
After Kate's trial (2007)[]
Season 4[]

Hurley begins to question his own sanity as he is visited by Jack once more. ("Something Nice Back Home")
Hurley continued to receive visits from Charlie, regularly talking to him on a bench outside the hospital. His mental condition deteriorated to the point where he stopped taking his medication. Jack was called in to talk to Hurley and counsel him. Hurley told Jack he wasn't taking his medication because he believed that he and the rest of the Oceanic 6 died without ever escaping the Island and were now stuck in the afterlife.
He compared Jack's life with Kate and Aaron to a vision of heaven. He told Jack that Charlie had visited him the day before and had predicted Jack's visit. Charlie had a message for Jack which he made Hurley write down so he would get it exactly, stating, "You're not supposed to raise him" (the "him" most likely being Aaron). Hurley further told Jack that he would soon be getting a visitor of his own. ("Something Nice Back Home")
Visit from Jeremy Bentham (2007)[]
Hurley continued to receive "visits" by acquaintances from the island, people he believed to be dead.
When a wheelchair-bound Locke stopped by, Hurley immediately assumed he had died as well. Locke assured him he was very much alive, and nearby medical staff confirmed his presence. Locke unsuccessfully attempted to convince Hurley to return to the island. Spotting Abaddon standing by the car, Hurley panicked in recognition and cried for help. The orderlies tried to calm him down and escorted him back into the institute. ("The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham")

Hurley's chess game with an invisible Mr. Eko. ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 3")
Some time later, Hurley was visited by Michael's mom. She asked him if he was dangerous before allowing an older and taller Walt to speak with him. Walt said Jeremy Bentham came to visit him and asked why the Oceanic 6 were lying. Hurley replied that it was the only way to keep those left behind safe, including Michael.
Hurley was still in the mental hospital, seen playing chess with Mr. Eko, who was visible only to him, when Sayid set him free and took him to an undisclosed location, which he said was "safe". ("There's No Place Like Home, Part 3")
Season 5[]

Hurley is incorrectly thought to be a murderer at the safe house. ("Because You Left")
En route to the safe house, Sayid informed Hurley that in the years since they left the Island he had been working for Ben. Hurley asked whether he was on "our side" now, and Sayid replied, "If you ever have the misfortune to run into him, then anything he tells you, do the exact opposite." When they arrived at the safe house they were ambushed by three men, whom Sayid killed. A civilian with a cell phone camera photographed Hurley, who was holding a gun with a shirt covered in "blood" (in actuality, just ketchup) while standing over the body of one of Sayid's victims. Hurley was branded a murderer by the media, as Jack and Ben saw on the news in their hotel room. ("Because You Left")
In panic, Hurley drove off with an unconscious Sayid, who had been hit by a poison dart during the confrontation at the safe house. He started to drive erratically and was pulled over by a cop, who turned out to be a hallucination of the late Ana Lucia. She advised him to buy a new shirt and stay away from the cops. As she walked away, she told Hurley that "Libby says hi."

Hurley is surprised to see Ana Lucia's ghost. ("The Lie")
Hurley stopped at a gas station and bought an "I Heart my Shih-Tzu" T-shirt from the limited selection. He was recognized by the station attendant as the lottery winner and a member of the Oceanic Six. He went to his parents' house and allowed his father to bring Sayid to Jack for medical help. Hurley, sick of lying to the world, confessed to his mother that the Oceanic 6 had lied and told her everything that really happened on the Island. His mother replied, "I don't understand you, but I believe you."

Hurley makes contact with Jack from jail. ("The Little Prince")
Later that night, Hurley was heating up a Hot Pocket when Ben appeared behind him and tried to convince Hurley to join him and return to the Island. Hurley paused, remembering what Sayid had told him earlier, and yelled, "Never, dude!" He bolted out the back door toward the cops outside who were watching the house, and confessed to the killings Sayid had committed, believing this was the only way he would be safe from Ben. As he was being handcuffed, Hurley smiled at a shocked and dismayed Ben. ("The Lie")
In jail in an orange jumpsuit, Hurley seemed very happy with where he was. He called Jack to ask him if his dad had dropped Sayid off and if he was okay. Hurley also said to tell Sayid he did exactly what he had said (doing the opposite from what Ben told him) and that Ben could never get to him now.
Later, Ben had a meeting with his lawyer, who told him that they didn't have a solid case against him because the man found outside Santa Rosa Hospital was killed before Hurley had escaped. Norton said the judge would never convict Hurley and that he would be a free man. ("The Little Prince")

Jacob tips Hugo the info he needs to get back to the Island. ("The Incident, Part 2")
As Hurley was being released from prison, he tried to convince the guard that he really was a murderer, but the guard said that he's been discharged and should go to a cab standing in front of the building. In the cab was Jacob with a guitar case. When Jacob revealed that he knew Hurley's name, Hurley figured he was a ghost, but he said he wasn't dead. He asked Hurley why he wouldn't go back to the Island, and Hurley said that he believed he was cursed and had caused all of the death and tragedy that had surrounded him.

Jack calms Hurley, who opposed to Ben's presence on flight 316. ("316")
Jacob told him he was blessed to have the ability to speak with the dead and was not crazy. He told Hurley about Ajira Flight 316 and that all he had to do was be on that plane. As Jacob left the cab Hurley told him he left his guitar but Jacob said it wasn't his guitar. ("The Incident, Part 2")
Hurley was next seen with the guitar case booking a ticket for Flight 316 and buying the rest of the unsold tickets. On the plane, he took issue with the fact that Ben was also on the flight, but Jack was able to calm his nerves, saying that if they were going back to the Island, Ben was coming with them. When the turbulence started, Hurley warned Caesar, who was sitting next to him, to buckle his seat belt before the light flashed. ("316")
Back on the Island[]
1977 (Season 5)[]

Hurley, minutes after his return to the Island. ("316")
After Jack woke up in the middle of the jungle, he found Hurley and Kate at the waterfall, with the rest of the passengers of the flight nowhere to be seen. They heard music nearby and spotted a DHARMA van coming to the side of the lagoon. The van stopped and Jin stepped out with a rifle, wearing a DHARMA suit. ("316") He took the three of them to the North Valley, where they were reunited with Sawyer. ("LaFleur")
Hurley, Kate, and Jack posed as new DHARMA Initiative recruits, with Hurley working as a chef. ("Namaste")
In the DHARMA cafeteria, Hurley brought Kate and Jack some breakfast and revealed to Kate that Sawyer and Juliet were a couple. ("He's Our You")

Hurley waiting to disappear as he and Miles discuss time travel. ("Whatever Happened, Happened")
After Ben was shot and Sayid escaped, Sawyer ordered Miles to keep Jack, Kate, and Hurley under house arrest. While there, Hurley kept looking at his hand to see if he was disappearing. When Miles questioned him, Hurley said that if "Little Ben" died, he wouldn't grow up and become "Big Ben" and make them come back to the Island, and because of that, they wouldn't exist. Miles explained the "Whatever Happened, Happened" theory, and they discussed time travel. Hurley finally asked why big Ben, while being tortured by Sayid in 2004, didn't remember being shot by that same guy 30 years earlier, but Miles was stumped. Later, Juliet came into the house looking for Jack and dismissed Hurley and Miles. They left, friendly and still debating the issue. ("Whatever Happened, Happened")

Hurley re-writing Star Wars while talking to Miles about their special "powers". ("Some Like It Hoth")
While Miles was secretly bringing a body to The Orchid, Hurley insisted they carpool, as he was bringing the crew lunch. Hurley discovered the body by its smell, and Miles told him what really happened to it. Hurley realized that Miles could talk to the dead and shared that he could too. When Dr. Chang saw that Miles had brought Hurley along and also knew about the body, he was not happy and made Hurley keep the secret under the threat of polar bear cleanup duty. Miles then let Hurley in on the fact that Dr. Chang was his dad. The three of them went to a hidden construction site, where Hurley overheard two workers putting the serial number on a metal door for this new station. After overhearing the notorious numbers, Hurley revealed to Miles that they were building "our hatch", referring to The Swan. On the way back, Hurley tried to get Miles to talk about his dad, but Miles was angry and stole Hurley's notebook, in which he had written the script for The Empire Strikes Back with a few changes. Hurley noted that the year was 1977, and Star Wars had just been released. He figured he was doing George Lucas a favor by writing the sequel. Hurley told Miles about his own troubled relationship with his father and how he forgave him, and suggested that Miles try to establish a relationship with his own father. ("Some Like It Hoth")

Hurley and Jin evacuate the Barracks. ("The Variable")
The next day, after their cover was blown, Hurley, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Juliet, and Jin met in Sawyer and Juliet's home to discuss their options. Sawyer suggested they either leave the Island by submarine or head into the jungle to "start from square one." Hurley supported staying on the island. Hurley, Jin, Sawyer, and Juliet decided to pack and head for the beach. As Hurley and Jin were walking out of their houses they heard the alarm and saw Radzinsky and two other DHARMA members trooping into the barracks with guns. ("The Variable")
Grabbing some DHARMA food, Hurley met Miles and Jin and escaped the Barracks. Dr. Chang had followed them and asked if they were really from the future. Hurley denied it, but Chang quizzed him with questions relevant to 1977; Hurley struggled with the answers, being unsure of his birth year, the current president of the U.S., and whether the Korean War had yet occurred. Flustered, he finally admitted that he was from the future, and Chang believed him, revealing that he believed what Daniel told him about needing to evacuate the entire Island. ("Follow the Leader")

Hurley stops the van, noticing Kate, Sawyer and Juliet. ("The Incident, Part 1")
Later, Hurley, Miles, and Jin watched as people boarded the submarine, including Charlotte and her mother, Lara Chang, and baby Miles. They were about to go when they saw Juliet and Sawyer, handcuffed and being brought to the sub. Miles, confused, handed the binoculars to Hurley, who told Miles that Sawyer probably had a plan. ("Follow the Leader").
Hurley then drove a DHARMA van, with Miles and Jin aboard, into the Barracks where they rescued Jack and an injured Sayid. He drove them toward the Swan site until they were stopped by Kate, Juliet, and Sawyer blocking the road. ("The Incident, Part 1") Jack and Sawyer left to have their 'five minute discussion', while Hurley waited at the van and looked after Sayid. Shortly after Jack headed to the Swan alone to detonate the bomb, Jin spotted Phil and some security officers heading for the Swan as well. Sawyer, Kate, Miles, and Juliet took the van to go help Jack. Hurley was unaccounted for during the battle, but presumably he stayed with Jin and Sayid and was with them during The Incident. With the detonation of Jughead he survived. ("The Incident, Part 2").
2007 (Season 6)[]

Hurley approaches Jack to inform him about Jacob's instructions. ("Lighthouse") (promotional still)
Hurley awoke in 2007 and continued tending to Sayid, but soon stumbled upon Jacob's ghost. He relayed the dead man's instructions to the rest of the group, who together brought Sayid to the Temple. The Others there captured the party and the temple master, Dogen, ordered them shot till Hurley announced that Jacob had sent them. As proof, he offered his guitar case, which turned out to contain a large ankh with several of their names. The Others led Sayid to a pool in the temple, but as Hurley noted with alarm, they did not save him - they drowned him. Hurley revealed to the Others that Jacob had died, which shocked the group into securing the Temple. ("LA X, Parts 1 & 2")
Hurley remained by dead Sayid's side until, to his shock, Sayid returned to life. Hurley talked to him, though with some fear. Shortly afterward he again encountered Jacob's ghost, which presented him with a mission to lead Jack to a lighthouse and turn its dial to lead someone to the island. Dogen confronted him as he tried to leave, but Hurley ignored him, armed with the news from Jacob that he was a candidate. He managed to recruit Jack for the trek (telling him he had "what it takes"), and the two set off together. They briefly passed Kate and their old caves before reaching their destination. Hurley asked Jack to help turn the dial, but Jack caught sight of his own childhood home in the lighthouse's mirrors and smashed them. As Jack sat gazing out at the sea, Jacob's ghost appeared yet again and told Hurley that the experience had shown Jack that he had a purpose. ("LA X, Part 2") ("What Kate Does") ("Lighthouse")

Hurley talks to Isabella ("Ab Aeterno")
Jacob also alluded to the attack at the Temple, so Hurley tried to lead Jack away from there. They ran into Richard Alpert, who took them to the Black Rock. Seeing Richard try to light the dynamite there and Jack happy to help, Hurley fled. The trio later walked to the beach, where Hurley embraced a delighted Sun and also greeted Miles. The large group, now including Ilana, Frank, and Ben, discussed plans around the campfire that night. Hurley spoke to the ghost of Isabella, Richard's dead wife, and later tracked Richard and mediated a last meeting between the two. He also passed on a message from Isabella warning that they could not let the Man in Black leave the Island. ("Dr. Linus") ("Ab Aeterno") ("The Package")

Michael's apparition warns Hurley. ("Everybody Loves Hugo")
Richard responded with a plan to blow up Ajira 316, but when Hurley visited Libby's grave the next day, Michael's ghost appeared and warned against this. Though Hurley tried to dissuade Ilana from the plan, when her dynamite exploded, and killed her, he agreed to fetch more from the Black Rock. He reached the ship ahead of the group and detonated its explosives, destroying them. He then suggested they seek out Locke, falsely calling the idea Jacob's, but Richard decided to seek more explosives from the Barracks. Sun and Frank chose to follow Hurley, as did Jack, who purposely ceded control to him. Hurley briefly left the group to speak with Michal once more, having deduced that that the dead on the Island were the source of the whispers. Michael apologized anew for killing Libby and directed Hurley toward Locke's camp. ("Everybody Loves Hugo")

Hurley along with Jack, Sun and Frank take the road into the harbour. ("The Last Recruit")
In the morning, Sawyer informed Hurley of his plan to ally with Widmore. Hurley traveled with other survivors on The Elizabeth to Hydra Island, where Widmore's team reneged on their deal and imprisoned the survivors in cages. The monster's arrival scared Hurley, but Jack arrived and freed them, revealing that he was now working with the Man in Black. Hurley objected to the idea of taking the Man in Black off the island, and though the group followed Locke's instructions to board the submarine, they dove without him. But Locke had sneaked a bomb aboard, and once it detonated, Jack told Hurley to help Kate escape the sinking vessel. Sayid, Sun, and Jin died in the sub, bringing Hurley to tears. ("The Last Recruit")

The Mysterious Boy snatches the ashes from Hurley. ("What They Died For")
The next day, while the surviving candidates trekked in search of Desmond, Jacob's ghost waylaid Hurley in his boy form. He used his own ashes, which Hurley had taken from Ilana, to reanimate himself, and he spoke to the candidates about the need for a successor. When Jack volunteered and became the next protector, Hurley voiced relief at being spared the burden. Based on Jacob's words to Jack, the group journeyed to the Heart of the Island the next day, though Hurley had little faith in Jacob or in their chances of defeating Locke. They ran into Locke, Ben, and Desmond on the way, and Hurley expressed confidence in Jack as he continued to the Heart without him. ("What They Died For") ("The End")

Jack passes protection of the Island to Hurley. ("The End")
The island began shaking once the Light went out, and Hurley urged Kate and Sawyer to save Ben from a fallen tree. The group reached Jack just in time for Kate to help him kill Locke, and though she and Sawyer left to fly Ajira 316 off the island, Jack remained to reactivate the Heart. Hurley stayed with Jack, claiming fear of the cliffs the others had to descend. Once they reached the Heart, Jack revealed that he was near death and Hurley had to replace him as protector. Hugo protested, but Jack inducted him nonetheless, his faith in Hurley echoing Hurley's earlier faith in Jack. Hurley lowered Jack into the Heart, and when he pulled the rope up again, Desmond, not Jack, was tied to it. ("The End")
As Protector of the Island[]
When he realized that Jack was dead, Hurley wondered what he was going to do. Ben suggested that he do what he did best - taking care of people - and begin by helping Desmond return home, saying that Hurley could run things differently than Jacob had. Hurley asked Ben to become his adviser, to which Ben replied that he would be honored. ("The End")
2010[]

Hurley reunites with Walt in a DHARMA van. ("The New Man in Charge")
Three years after his appointment as Protector, Hurley sent Ben off the Island to "tie up a few loose ends," including closing down the DHARMA Logistics Warehouse in Guam. Hurley and Ben later traveled to Santa Rosa to ask Walt, who had been committed there, to return to the Island. Reuniting with Walt in a DHARMA van, Hurley told Walt that he had a job offer to talk to him about. He then told Ben to take them back to the Island. ("The New Man in Charge")
Hurley continued to protect the Island for an unknown period of time, with Ben acting as his adviser. It is unknown how long his tenure as protector of the Island was. In the flash sideways Hurley later commented that Ben was a good "number two." Ben stated that Hurley also did a great job as the Island's "number one." ("The End")
Flash sideways[]

Hugo tells Det. James Ford that he is the luckiest man in the world. ("LA X, Part 1")
In his flash sideways, Hugo had again won the lottery, but he didn't use the numbers. Instead, Hugo won the lottery by using the serial number off a dollar bill he found lying on the street. (Geronimo Jack's Beard) He again owned Box 2 and Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack. Bad luck no longer plagued him, and he had used his wealth for philanthropic purposes, "taking care of people" much as he did while alive. He even won the Man of the Year award from the Golden State Natural History Museum for his good works. But he suffered from a new problem - loneliness - and his mother regularly commented on the absence of women in his life. ("LA X, Part 1") ("Everybody Loves Hugo")
Hugo flew Oceanic 815 from Sydney, where he had recorded lines for a Mr. Clucks commercial, and exchanged words with Arzt and James aboard the flight and with Desmond in the airport. Later, in the Box 2 parking lot, Hugo ran into the recently-fired employee John Locke, whose van was boxed in by Hurley's yellow Hummer. Hugo introduced himself, offered his sympathy, and directed John to a temp agency of Hugo's, where Locke would later meet Rose. ("LA X, Parts 1 & 2") ("The Substitute")

A kiss to remember. ("Everybody Loves Hugo")
At his mother's urging, Hugo agreed to a blind date with a neighbor's daughter, but he was stood up. While waiting for his date, he was approached by Libby Smith, who recognized him from television and called them "soulmates". Before the conversation could progress. Dr. Brooks escorted her outside to a Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute van. Discouraged that the one woman interested in him was apparently insane, Hugo went on an eating binge at a Mr. Cluck's location. But Desmond Hume approached him and encouraged him to pursue Libby. Taking this advice, Hugo donated $100,000 to Santa Rosa to gain access to Libby. They planned a picnic date at the beach, much like the one they'd planned right before Libby's death. At the date, Libby kissed him, restoring Hugo's memories of their time on the Island. ("Everybody Loves Hugo")

Hugo pays Ana Lucia. ("What They Died For")
Desmond had purposely drawn the two together, and he watched from afar during the date. He later approached Hurley about helping awaken their other friends. Desmond arranged to share a police van with Sayid and Kate, and Hurley brought $125,000 to a meeting point to bribe its driver into freeing them. This driver turned out to be Ana Lucia Cortez, who was "not ready yet" to awaken. Hurley drove Sayid to the Flightline Motel, but this did not restore his memories of their previous adventures there. Hurley then entered the motel and met a drunk Charlie, who refused to attend the concert that he was scheduled to play. Hurley tranquilized him and drove him to the concert himself. He then drove to a bar, where he and Boone planned to unite Sayid with Shannon. Sayid approached Shannon to save her from a fight in the parking lot, and Hurley looked on as the two kissed and awoke. They then all drove to the church, where Hurley had a final conversation with Ben, his longtime assistant, who had decided to remain in the flash sideways world for a while. Hurley sat with Libby and his other friends in the church as a light engulfed them, letting them move on. ("Everybody Loves Hugo") ("What They Died For") ("The End")
Character overview[]
Among the other characters, Hurley often serves as a comic relief. He has the habit of calling almost everybody “dude” and making involuntary silly comments and movie references. Hurley can also sometimes be rather naive.
Hurley thinks very lowly of himself (which is perhaps the origin of his nickname) and is very shy with girls. He is concerned with his weight as well as his sanity (because of his ability to see dead people). He also believes in curses, and for a long time believed that he was cursed with bad luck.
Hugo is perhaps the friendliest of all the survivors. He has the ability to bring happiness and comfort to those around him, always trying to make them feel better. When not following the others and making decisions on his own, Hurley often chooses to act passively. He isn’t rancorous, either, proposing his help to Michael who was trapped among the whispers. Hurley started to like himself more as the series progressed. He even got used to his mediumship, talking to the dead as he would talk to the living.
