Baring

Ilana sits next to Sayid

Leaving the marina following the events of "This Place Is Death", Sayid is drinking MacCutcheon whisky at a bar when he is approached by Ilana. They flirt, and end up going to a hotel room. As they kiss and lie back on the bed, Sayid starts to take off her boot, only to receive a boot to the head. Ilana holds him at gunpoint and reveals she is a bounty hunter who has been employed to take Sayid to Guam by the family of Peter Avellino, whom Sayid previously had killed for Ben. (The Economist)

The next day, Ilana escorts Sayid to the airport. After noticing some of the Oceanic Six (Kate, Hurley, and Jack) about to board Ajira Airways Flight 316 to Guam, he asks to be put on a different flight, but Ilana is unyielding. On the plane, Sayid sees Ben Linus board and accuses Ilana of working for him, which she denies. He describes Ben as a liar, a manipulator and a monster. When Ilana asks Sayid why anyone would work for a man like Ben, Sayid replies "I did."

Pretorture

Oldham prepares to interrogate Sayid

Sayid is in the DHARMA Initiative's jail. He is questioned by Horace Goodspeed, Radzinsky, and James "Sawyer" Ford who is under the alias of LaFleur. Sayid does not say anything and is later visited by a twelve-year-old Ben. Ben's father Roger witnesses this and assaults Ben for bringing Sayid food. Sayid is later confronted one-on-one by Sawyer, who in an effort to save Sayid, tries to convince Sayid to give a false confession of being a defector from the Island's native population, the Others. Sayid refuses and is subsequently taken to Oldham, DHARMA's resident interrogation expert ("He's our you," as Sawyer describes him to Sayid). Oldham gives Sayid a truth serum which forces Sayid to reveal his knowledge of DHARMA's stations, including the future Swan Station, and that he has previously been to the Island. However, he also tells them that he is from the future, which discredits his story. Upon returning to the jail, Sayid is once again visited by Ben, who pledges to free Sayid because Ben wishes to join the Others. That evening, several members of the DHARMA Initiative take a vote to decide whether to execute Sayid.

Firecar

A car on fire crashes into a house

After an impassioned statement from new mother Amy, they all vote in favor of execution. Sawyer attempts to let Sayid escape, but Sayid refuses, stating he has found his purpose for returning to the Island.

Futurekill

A shot young Ben on the ground

Meanwhile, at the Barracks, Juliet expresses her concern to Sawyer that their relationship will be jeopardized because of Kate's return to the Island. Jack and Kate learn of their relationship from Hurley, and Kate takes Juliet's advice to stay away from Sawyer. Later in the evening, Sawyer goes to Kate's house and asks her why she came back to the Island. Before she can answer, however, a flaming DHARMA van crashes into one of the houses. While everyone is distracted by the fire, Ben helps Sayid escape from the jail. While they are fleeing, Sayid steals a gun from Jin after knocking him out. Sayid then shoots Ben in the chest and runs off.

  • A Separate Reality: Ben gives this to Sayid to read. Written by Carlos Castaneda in 1971, this allegedly non-fictional book is about a man's experience working with a self-proclaimed sorcerer. The authenticity of the book, along with the rest of Castaneda's series, has been a topic of debate since they were published. (Literary works)
  • I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby: Oldham is playing a song on his old record player in front of his teepee. It is a popular song published in 1928. The music was written by Jimmy McHugh, the lyrics by Dorothy Fields. According to the Jazz Standards website, the song was originally written as "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Lindy" in honor of Charles Lindbergh for the Broadway revue Harry Delmar's Revels (1927) but was dropped from that show.
