Synopsis

Flashback

Sayid's Father

Sayid's Father

Tikrit, Iraq

Sayid's father pressures Sayid's brother into killing a chicken, telling him that he's not a man otherwise. A young Sayid steps in and breaks the chicken's neck for his brother, when their father returns and discovers the chicken is dead, he begins to congratulate the older son, when he confesses that Sayid killed the chicken. Their father responds that he is glad at least one of them will be a man.

Moscow, Russia

Sayid chases down and kills a man called Andropow in Moscow, Russia. Just before Sayid shoots the Man, the man offers him a bribe in exchange for his life, only to be gunned down instead. Sayid meets Ben outside, and is told that man was the last of Widmore's people that was a danger to the Oceanic 6 and that Sayid is free to go live his life. In the background can be seen Saint Basil's Cathedral.

Ben visits Sayid

Ben Visits Sayid in Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Sayid is seen helping to construct a school as part of a charity called Build Our World. Ben approaches him and tells him that Locke is dead and that he was probably killed by one of Widmore's men as retaliation for Sayid's murders. Ben also tells Sayid that a man has been perched outside the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute watching Hurley. Ben tells Sayid that he has the ability to kill people when others can't. Sayid tells him that he doesn't like to kill people and that he's wrong.

Los Angeles, Calif.

Following the events of This Place is Death, Sayid meets Ilana at a bar. She is a bounty hunter who has been employed to take Sayid to Guam by the family of Peter Avellino, who Sayid previously killed for Ben. (The Economist) After noticing some of the Oceanic Six (Kate, Hurley, and Jack) about to board the same plane as his to Guam, he sees Ben Linus enter the plane's cabin before questioning Ilana if she is working for him. Sayid describes Ben as a monster, and Ilana asks Sayid why anyone would work for a man like Ben. Sayid replies by stating "I did."

On the Island

Sayid is in the Dharma Initiative's jail. He is questioned by Horace Goodspeed, Radzinsky, and James "Sawyer" Ford who is under the alias of LaFleur. Sayid does not say anything and is later visited by a twelve-year-old Ben. Ben's father Roger witnesses this and assaults Ben for bringing Sayid food. Sayid is later confronted one-on-one by Sawyer, who in an effort to save Sayid, tries to convince Sayid to give a false confession of being a defector from the island's native population, the Others. Sayid refuses and is subsequently taken to Oldham (William Sanderson), Dharma's resident interrogation expert ("He's our you," as Sawyer describes him to Sayid). Oldham gives Sayid a truth serum which forces Sayid to reveal his knowledge of Dharma's stations, including the future Swan Station, and that he has previously been to the island. However, he also tells them that he is from the future, which discredits his story. Upon returning to the jail, Sayid is once again visited by Ben, who pledges to free Sayid because Ben wishes to join the Others. That evening, several members of the Dharma Initiative take a vote to decide whether to execute Sayid. After an impassioned statement from new mother Amy (Reiko Aylesworth), they all vote in favor of execution. Sawyer attempts to let Sayid escape, but Sayid refuses, stating he has found his purpose for returning to the island.

Meanwhile, at the barracks, Juliet expresses her concern to Sawyer that their relationship will be jeopardized because of Kate's return to the island. Jack and Kate learn of their relationship from Hurley and Kate takes Juliet's advice to stay away from Sawyer. Later in the evening, Sawyer goes to Kate's house and asks her why she came back to the island. Before she can answer, however, a flaming Dharma van crashes into one of the houses. While everyone is distracted by the fire, Ben helps Sayid escape from the jail. While they are fleeing, Sayid steals a gun from Jin after knocking him out. Sayid then shoots Ben in the chest and runs off.

The authenticity of the book, along with the rest of Castaneda's series, has been a topic of debate since they were published. (Literary works)
  • I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby: Oldham is playing a song on his old record player in front of his teepee. It is a popular song published in 1928.
