Discharge effects
*Locke is to be the one who ushers in a new leadership on the Island. The beginning of the episode mirrors the beginning of Episode 1 of Season 1 - waking up lying face up in the Jungle, watching someone pass by, finding a useful object - with Locke substituted for Jack, the group's first leader.

* Desmond gained clairvoyant powers because he was closest to the fail-safe when he activated it in 2x23. He knows about Locke's speech, and Hurley even asks him about being affected because of being so close to the Incident and makes reference to the Hulk.

* Desmond is purposely or non-purposely traveling through time or blipping ahead in time. Time travel explains his nudity when he is first seen. In many films and books about time travel (the Terminator and the Time Traveler's Wife, to name two) the time traveler always arrives naked.

* Desmond is naked because the fail-safe teleports organic matter away from the Hatch. Charlie, Locke and Eko were wearing cotton clothes, Desmond's were synthetic.

* The EM field keeps the Island in a state of slow-time, where days pass at a slower rate. When the implosion occurs, time rushes forward to catch up to real time, which could also possibly explain the purple sky (if the Island were to be thrust into real time, all of the days and nights blurring together might cause a blue or purple sky). By inoculating himself with the vaccine, Desmond is rendered immune to this effect, and can therefore move around at a much quicker pace than normal, allowing him to perform various activities while everyone else experiences the Island time sped up.

*Following the System Termination, each inhabitant of the Swan is in the role of a different sort of spiritual leader: Eko, the priest; Locke, the shaman, and Desmond, the prophet. (Charlie may have gotten out of the Swan before the discharge.)

*Desmond's role as prophet is reinforced in this episode by his "wandering naked in the wilderness", and his wearing of Hurley's shirt which fits him like a robe.

*Desmond, Eko, and Locke (and possibly Charlie) are mentally linked due to being at ground zero of the Hatch explosion. Locke "heard" Eko talk to him, even though Eko seemed unconscious, and it's possible that (rather than telling the future) Desmond "heard" Locke giving the speech inside Locke's head before Locke actually gave it out loud.

*Due to their close presence to the detonation of the magnetic anomaly, Desmond, Locke and Eko now have altered perspectives on time. Desmond appears to have knowledge of future events, Locke is capable of sensing present events occurring elsewhere on the Island (in his vision) and Eko had knowledge of Locke's past when he told him he was a hunter. This is analogous to the abilities of the character of Dr. Manhattan in Alan Moore's graphic novel Watchmen, especially when Desmond discusses Locke's speech that is yet to occur. When questioned about this by Hurley he appears to be confused and says he is "a bit shook up". The writers may have wished to co-opt the abilities of Dr. Manhattan's character (who can sense the past, present and future simultaneously, and occasionally becomes confused by it, especially towards the end of the book when near Ozymandias's HQ) into the show, except they have split these abilities between three characters.

Locke's vision
Locke has a vision with numerous themes.

*The vision is a mix of symbols: Departure part(upper floor) in the waiting area represents Death, passing to the plane represents joining the Others, the area is the Island. The Island can only be escaped via death (upper floor) or by joining the Others (the plane).

*While Ben is scanning Jack, Jack 'gives up' his watch indicating Jack is no longer reliant on time. The Others are rendered 'immortal' somehow by the Island - which is why they want to/have to stay there - and Ben is grooming Jack as a possible new addition to the Others. Kate and Sawyer are next in line in the queue; the purpose of their current ordeal is to indicate whether they are 'worthy' to join the Others.

*The sound of a gunshot is heard while jumping between cuts of Ben scanning Jack; perhaps to foreshadow something.

* In Locke's vision, Desmond is seen with three females. Both Greco-Roman and Germanic mythologies contain groups of three females who are tied to/control fate and have powers of prescience: the Moirae/Parcae/Fates and the Norns, respectively. It is possible that Desmond has somehow become tied to them.

* In Locke's vision, while he's riding to the top of the elevator, a chain noise can be heard in the background; the same sound was emitted by the "Monster" when it dragged Locke through the jungle. It is likely that the sound relates to John's life and to the paralysis of his legs and the "Monster" has somehow "recorded" this detail from his past.

Polar bear cave
Locke finds Mr. Eko in a polar bear cave that contains skeletons and a tonka truck.

The commune
Locke spent time in a commune.

*The commune was possibly in or near Luna, California, as in Bad Twin. According to the book, Luna's about two hours north of LAX, which puts it at best in central California. Humboldt County (where the farm is located in the episode) is decidedly north of that area, one county away from Oregon.

*Libby was at the commune, and was referred to as "Lizzy". Eddie and Locke have a discussion about a girl named "Lizzy" that is "too granola" for Eddie, and half Locke's age.
