*Since Kate wasn't visibly pregnant at the time of the crash, meaning that Aaron would be too old to plausibly be her son (assuming they leave the island 4 months after the crash, that means she has a 2.5 month old son four months after getting on the plane not visibly pregnant), this supports the theory of time running at a different speed on the island (similar to walt's apparent "growing too fast").

**Murder trials can take months, sometimes even years to go through. For example, OJ Simpson was arraigned on June 21, 1994. There was plenty of concern about OJ's celebrity and how any jury would be unbiased towards him. His trial started on January 25, 1995 and lasted for 134 days. It is almost a certainty that Kate would have a certain degree of celebrity and there would be tons of coverage about a woman who would survive a plane crash only to go to prison on her return.

Aaron

  • Aaron is not the biological son of Kate. [could that be because we already know that Aaron is Claire's son? Why is there even a question here? people really love to go three steps too far in looking for something hidden in every move] When Kate goes to his bedroom and holds him in her arms she calls him "Aaron." But a mother who had had the baby from birth would have already developed a stronger bond with the baby and would be calling him by a nickname, especially in an intimate setting with no observers. To call your own baby by its given name rather than by a family nickname is a bit unusual.
    • On the other hand, the creators of Lost really want to make us confused and they need to let us know that this baby's name is Aaron. So the fact that she calls him Aaron is somehow necessary.
  • Kate stole Aaron away from Claire and when she left the Island, she told everyone it was her child. Jack can't accept what Kate has done and Kate will never go back to the Island because she would lose Aaron.
    • Unlikely as Kate tells Claire that she's no good with babies, and if she stole a child Jack wouldn't be quite so friendly or supportive in court.
      • Kate talks about having a baby with Sawyer during the episode and it explains why Kate called Aaron her "son" in private.
  • Kate is concerned with Aaron watching television. Aaron has powers akin to the Magic Box, or the apparent abilities of Walt. What he sees on TV he may conjure up into reality.
    • Kate wanted Aaron away from the TV so he didn't see her being put on trial.
      • She was also concerned that the story about Claire would come out, revealing to Aaron that Kate is not his biological mother.
        • Not necessarily: Aaron is too young to understand any of that or to give it any thought.
          • But as a mother, you simply don't want your child to be involved in any way. No matter how young the child is.
    • Kate wanted Aaron away from the TV so he didn't see Claire (who is a member of the Oceanic 6 and looking for him). This is why Kate wanted to use the back door in and out of the courthouse - so Claire wouldn't see her on television.
      • We can presume all Oceanic 6 are big celebrities. If so, there is no way that Claire wouldn't have heard of the story, or seen it on TV (if indeed she is also one of Oceanic 6), regardless of what door Kate uses to go into court. Kate's request to use a back door is easily explained just by reference to the crowd that is awaiting her outside. It's impressive, and anybody would be nervous in a situation like that. Especially somebody who is accused of murder.
    • Kate wanted Aaron away from the TV because many mothers don't like their kids watching too much TV.
  • Part of the cover story is that Jack is Aaron's father. This is why, instead of simply saying, "No," Jack must qualify that he doesn't love Kate anymore.
    • Jack is asked "Do you love the defendant?" He is NOT asked "Do you STILL love the defendant?" If there was some background knowledge that Jack and Kate had been involved, it would have been more logical to ask if he still loves her.
    • Jack and Claire are half brother & sister, therefore Jack might be able to pass a paternity test if he were put to one in order to prove that he is Aaron's father.
    • Regardless of whether Jack would pass a paternity test, Kate would abysmally fail.
      • Jack would NOT be able to pass a comprehensive paternity test as Aaron is a boy. All men (and only men) have Y Chromosomes that they get intact from their father. As Jack is related to Aaron's Mom, not his Dad, Thomas, they cannot have the same Y Chromosome.
        • Why assume that Jack is not related to Aaron's father? Jack WOULD have the same Y as Claire's Aaron if Jack himself were the father or if Christian were the father. The incest implicit in either scenario would explain why Jack, now fully cognizant of the family ties, would find the baby repulsive.
      • If Jack and Kate were maintaining a cover story, he would play along by willingly visiting Aaron.
  • Kate's Aaron isn't Claire's Aaron. He was conceived by Kate with Jack and named after Aaron.
    • It's inconceivable that if Aaron is truly Jack's son, Jack doesn't want to see him. That isn't really Jack: Jack loves responsibility, taking care of others and being an example. He would also take very seriously the role of being a father, since he was very critical of his own father.
    • It would be very stupid of the writers if, after presenting such a great plot twist (and maximizing the shock by ending the episode at the very moment the boy's name was revealed), they said "well, it was just the name". Furthermore, I don't think that it's coincidence that the boy resembled Claire so much.
      • Every episode ends with a cliffhanger, I dont think it should be taken too seriously. just look at the ending of each season, it always makes you think the world as going to end: s01 - Hurley's "the numbers are bad" hatch is opened, s02 - the clock goes down to zero, s03 - Ben said "everyone on the island will be killed". but nothing bad ever happens.
        • It's not the same thing. These are examples of plot twists. You expect something to happen, yet something else happens, contrary to what you expected. Plot twists happen when a revelation occurs despite an earlier suggestion that's contrary. The suggestion was that the hatch was bad, and the revelation was it was not essentially bad. The second example doesn't even apply, because when the clock goes down to zero, something bad does happen, and that was why Locke said he was wrong. As to the third example: It is not yet confirmed whether (almost) everyone on the island is killed or not; it's still waiting for a revelation. In this case though, Kate's kid was not revealed and the suggestion was it was hers. When we saw that Jack didn't want to see him, it was a further suggestion that it was probably Sawyer's. But when she said "Aaron", it was a revelation. That is a plot twist. They can't un-twist it now.
          • No, they were resolved by making them into plot twists, My point is the writers made it clear the "world is ending", but it didn't. how they made that happen is irrelevant. and nothing bad happened in s02 finale, saying "something bad happened" is not a proof. another example is Ben's "magic box" that turned out to be a "metaphor". I'm sure I can think of a few more but this argument is pointless. if you don't agree -- you don't agree.
  • Aaron is Claire's Aaron. Jack knows it's his nephew but Aaron brings out all those crazy memories of Dad and the sister he didn't know was his sister until the moment he left her behind with Locke and the other nut cases.
    • Jack doesn't want to see Aaron because he feels he should have custody of him and is upset about it.
    • Jack feels badly about whatever cover up and lie he agreed to tell, because he knows that Claire is still on the island. Seeing Aaron would be a reminder of his guilt.
      • Jack feels guilty because he caused Claire's death, leaving Aaron an orphan. Perhaps he insists that she leaves with the freighters (leading somehow to her death) because of his duel with Locke, which has blinded Jack to the fact that Locke is right about them. Part of Desmond's last flash was seeing Claire and Aaron getting into a helicopter and leaving the island (in "Greatest Hits.") So we know with some certainty that Claire leaves the island. What happens after she boards the helicopter is unknown.
      • Jack feels guilty because he has a hand in Claire's death, but it happens on island. We don't see that particular flash of Desmond's because it would giveaway that he actually sees Claire "getting on a helicopter" in a bodybag. Naomi's inclusion on the helicopter is a foreshadow of Claire's fate.
        • Desmond saved Charlie even when he thought that Penny was coming to the island. It is unlikely that he would Charlie die for a fake reason.
  • Aaron is Claire's Aaron, but the cover story is that he is the child of Jack and Kate.
    • This makes it complicated to explain the arc of Kate's supposed gestation as it relates to Aaron's age.
      • The problem with the gestation/age timeline is not an issue because of time passing at a different speed on the island (or related time shifting issues), making Kate's story believable.
        • The cover up is that Kate was pregnant when the plane crashed and that Jack helped deliver the baby, and is a father-figure to the child.
          • This is what Jack is concerned Hurley will tell (tell everyone that Aaron is not Kate's baby) when he visits him in the mental hospital and is also what Charlie encourages Hurley to do
            • Jack doesn't want Hugo to reveal that there were other survivors who are still on the island. This is a promise that the Oceanic 6 made to those who decided to stay.
  • Kate was on the run several months before the marshall caught up with her. She could easily say she was many months pregnant before the marshall found her and since the marshall is dead he can't refute her story.
  • Kate is raising Aaron as her own because Claire dies this season.
    • This may be correct because Claire would never consent to Aaron leaving the island without her.
      • There are many potential reasons Claire may separate from Aaron, for example, if his life was in danger and she had to give him up to someone else's care in order to protect him.
        • Also, Jack's strange reticence to see the child be explained by the fact that he will somehow be responsible for Claire's death, and the guilt is killing him. It's what will lead him into addiction and near-suicide later on.
          • Jack's strange reticence to see the child is more easily explained if Aaron is Kate and Sawyer's baby.
            • But Kate told Sawyer during this same episode that she was certain she wasn't pregnant from their first encounter (in the jail cell), and their dialogue indicated they didn't have intercourse while in Sawyer's new house that night.
              • Kate could be lying to Sawyer to test his reaction because she doesn't trust him. This theory and its ramifications are explained below in this section.
              • Also, it might be the case that Kate said the truth in this episode and that she is not pregnant yet, but that she will get pregnant on the island.
            • "The child must be Kate and Sawyer's baby" is the first thing that comes to mind already. That's why it's considered a plot twist when the boy's name is revealed.
            • Also, if the Aaron is not Claire's Aaron but a Kate/Sawyer child who just happens to be named Aaron, that's a pretty cheap trick by the show's writers to deliberately fool us by using that name.
    • This would run contrary to Jack's desire to get back to the island. It's more likely that he wants to get back to the island because Claire is in fact alive and well.
  • Claire and Aaron were not allowed to leave the Island together, as assuming that time runs at a different speed on the Island, having both of them rescued would reveal some of the odd properties of the Island to the outside world, as Aaron would be a different age to what would be expected. Thus mother and baby were separated, possibly with Claire's consent, possibly not.
  • Kate doesn't want her mother to see Aaron because she will know (by intuition or other means) that this is not Kate's biological child.
  • Kate doesn't want her mother to see Aaron because seeing the her mother and Aaron act as grandmother and grandson will make Kate regret keeping Aaron as her own child.
    • Because Kate's mother didn't testify against Kate, it is possible that Kate did let her meet Aaron. Just because we didn't see it doesn't guarantee it didn't happen.
  • Aaron will now be Raised By Another and without having Claire's protection, bad things will happen (as was prophesied by Richard Malkin).
    • When Eko visits the fortune teller, he claims to be a fraud, but it is unknown which of his stories is a lie.
    • When we see Kate in the future (with Jack at the airport) she references Aaron and seems to be in pretty good condition.
    • The "couple in Los Angeles", paradoxically, will end up being Jack and Kate.
  • Aaron is not one of the Oceanic 6, because if the "official story" is that eight people survived the crash and two died, the total of survivors (6) would not include Aaron, as he was not born yet. Therefore, there are still two unnamed members of the Oceanic 6.
    • One would likely have to be Edward Mars since the authorities were aware of his presence aboard the plane.
      • Jack specifically said in his testimony that the Marshall didn't survive the crash. He can't be part of the 8 Jack claims survived.
    • But since Aaron was born on the island, he would be considered a survivor of the crash aftermath. Therefore, the "live count" goes up to 9 while the survivors wait to be rescued, and the other THREE that didn't make it off the island are still unnamed.
      • Aaron would not be one of the Oceanic 6. He would be one of the 8 people rescued. Claire presumably is not one of the Oceanic 6 but she did leave the island. I suspect she was murdered on the boat before returning home. Her death at the hands of the boaties is what Ben and Sayid alluded to in the previous episode. Jack's part in getting Claire killed by trusting the boaties is what drives him to drinking and drugging.
        • and to not wanting to see Aaron
      • Up till this episode it had not been confimed that Kate was on of the "Oceanic 6". It was confirmed in this ep.
    • The last one cannot be the case since it would mean that they had stayed in the Island for at least 11 months. (<=Pregnacy+Aaron's age at the time of rescue).
    • From outside the island, it may have "appeared" to be at least 11 months. Time passes differently on the island.
  • Aaron is NOT one of the Oceanic 6. According to Jack's story (which we know to be false), there were only 8 survivors of the crash. Two died, leaving the Oceanic 6. Aaron had not been born yet and therefore does not count as one of the 6.
    • There was totally no feed on how many of the 8 survivors died. So there might have been 8 survivors, then Kate supposedly gave birth to her son, and then 3 people died.
      • Aaron cannot be one of the Oceanic 6 because the Oceanic 6 are nationally famous and easily recognized, and it's apparent from the Eggtown episode it its entirety that most people aren't even aware of the existence of Aaron in the flash forwards.
        • For the same reason as above, Ben is not one of the O6. He is in hiding in the future. If he was one of the O6, he would be nationally recognized and famous.
      • Actually, when Jack is on the stand he lies and says that Kate was a hero. He says she gave them food / water when they crashed, and he mentions that she tried to help the other 2... implying that 2 of the 8 died, as far as the Official story goes.
      • Yes, this theory actually doesn't explain why Aaron may be ruled out as one of the six.
  • Aaron is Claire's because of the hair colour. People with dark hair tend to have children with dark hair. Aaron is a bright blonde and therefore is likely to be Claire's.
    • His hair color is not necessarily indicative of Clair being his mother. Sawyer, who could still be the father if Kate got pregnant, has blonde hair, although not as light. Kate's mom also has pretty light blonde hair, so Kate does have the genes for it. Aaron and the creepy music at the end could just be a red herring.
    • Also babies' hair often starts out blonde at a young age, and then develop into brown hair.
  • Claire gets killed on the boat by one of the boaties but by accident, potentially because Ben is on the boat or the helicopter when it is leaving.
  • Claire does get off the Island and does become a member of the Oceanic six, however Thomas comes along and tries to take Aaron away for some reason. Claire then turns to Kate and Kate "adopts" Aaron as a front for Claire to get rid of Thomas.
    • This seems pretty drastic for a rich celebrity.
  • Kate's Aaron is Kate's and Sawyer's baby. In this episode Kate already knows she is pregnant but doesn't tell anybody.
    • Kate Drinks the red wine, she wouldn't if she were pregnant.
      • She isn't actually seen drinking it. And even if she had had a bit, that hardly poses a greak risk for the baby. Also, she might be hiding this from others, and from Sawyer, and if so she has to act as if she was not pregnant.
    • She doesn't really trust Sawyer so she lies to him to test his reaction. Sawyer gets really happy that she is not pregnant and this is a big disappointment for Kate. This explains why she gets so upset with Sawyer and leaves him: for otherwise it is hard to see why she gets so upset with Sawyer after having slept with him. (They look very loved up only a moment before.)
    • This would explain the look in Kate's face when Claire tells her that Kate should try being a mother: Kate doesn't smile or take it lightly, she looks instead quite afraid because she knows that she is going to be a mother.
    • This also explains why Kate wants to leave the island, and leaves the island, even though she now knows that when she gets back to civilization she is likely to be prosecuted and might end up in jail: she has to leave the island because the baby was conceived on the island, and therefore she will die if she stays.
    • This would also explain Aaron's blonde hair.
    • This would also explain why Jack doesn't want to see the child.
    • She named her own child after Claire's baby because they didn't make it off the island alive.
    • If this theory is correct, then Kate's Aaron is not one of Oceanic 6: for if Kate's Aaron is truly Kate's baby, and was conceived on the island, then he could not have been born on the island, for Kate would have died. So he must have been born once back in the USA. This in turn means he wasn't one of the Oceanic 6 to survive the crash.
    • If this theory is correct, then Sawyer might be one of the Oceanic 8. For Kate would have had to answer questions regarding who was the father of the baby, since she was not pregnant when she got on the plane. So she needs to account for the father, and the father has to be one of the Oceanic 8.
    • This would explain why Kate chose to stay with Sawyer in The Economist.
      • Kate was assumed to have a secret agenda, to ask Miles what he knows about her. But she could have easily asked Frank, Dan, or Charlotte the same question.
        • Kate's desire to talk to Miles did not surface until Sawyer fed the idea to her that she would be locked up if she returned to civilization. That's why she sought out Miles to find out if they knew about her past.
          • Kate knew she might be locked up even in season two, when she wanted to get on the raft. Sawyer told her he knew she wants on it because it's her only way to escape without being locked up.
            • Yes, she knew then, and that was why she wanted to get on the raft, because she thought it was a way to leave the island without her identity being discovered. But the situation now is completely different: the people who have just arrived on the island have already shown to have a knowledge of who the survivors are, so she needs to find out if she can hide her identity from them and from the world. She needs to find out what's the situation for her if she does leave the island with them.
    • If this theory is correct, then it would also explain why finally Kate does not stay with Sawyer and decides to go back to the beach: she is pregnant, she knows that Sawyer does not want a baby, and she also knows that he does not want to leave the island. If she stays she will die because the baby was conceived on the island. If she leaves, she now knows that she will have to face the music back home, but in the end that's the only way out in her situation: for her and for the baby. If they stay, they both die. If they leave, they both live.
  • If Aaron is Claire's Aaron, then he was in Oceanic 815 (even if not born) and is a survivor of the crash, was then born in the island, and, in turn, he is one of the Oceanic 6 who managed to leave the island. But if Aaron is Kate's Aaron, then he was conceived on the island and is not properly speaking a survivor of the crash, he was born afterwards in the USA (for any child conceived on the island dies), and in turn is not one of Oceanic 6 who came back, but was born afterwards.
  • Aaron is one of the Oceanic 6. The term "Oceanic 6" is likely a creation of the media and 6 people (officially) came back- so it's the Oceanic 6. They wouldn't say, "The Oceanic 6, plus one baby who was born on the island"- that's ridiculous.
    • Not so much. The term Oceanic 6 refers to the people who were officially on the manifest. Ater everybody thought they were all dead, 6 actually were not...they made it...they are legends, these are the Oceanic 6. Picture the news: "She survived the crash and gave birth to her child on the island" it makes perfect sense.
  • It is not made clear, but Aaron is one of the Oceanic 6. After "The Economist" first aired on ABC, the short preview of the following episode (This one) indicated that another member of the Oceanic 6 would be revealed.
    • That was for Kate, not Aaron. Kate wasn't confirmed as one of the Oceanic 6 until now.
      • Agreed. Unless Kate gave birth to Aaron in midflight, it seems doubtful that a child would be considered one of the "Oceanic 6." The one who was to be revealed was, indeed, Kate.
    • Promos are not created by the creators of the show, and the producers have even said that promos have made incorrect claims in the past. Promos are not canon.
    • Actually, the promos said nothing about revealing another member of the "Oceanic 6." The promos after "Confirmed Dead" said that they would reveal another member, which turned out to be Sayid, but just like after "The Beginning of the End" promos, nothing was said about revealing another member of "the 6."
  • Kate legally adopted Aaron, and never claimed to be his biological mother. Claire is considered one of the 8 survivors of the crash, and one of Kate's alleged heroic actions was to care for Aaron as her own after Claire died in childbirth or some other time before they were rescued.
    • This seems plausible, and also why Kate would have stopped Jack from continuing what he was saying. She wouldn't want to bring her son into the middle of all of that.
      • Perhaps the reason why Kate wants Jack to stop is because he is telling a lot of lies, and she is not comfortable about lying? Kate has consistenly been shown to be someone with strong values and ideas, who acts accordingly and finds it difficult to compromise.
    • A convict awaiting trial would not be allowed to adopt a child in the US. He would more likely have been returned to Claire's closest living relative or placed into foster care.
      • Claire's closest living relative is actually Jack, which could easily have been revealed in the media frenzy following the crash and rescue of the Oceanic 6. As Aaron's guardian, Jack decided Kate should adopt him.
        • It's inconceivable that Jack would have passed such a big responsibility to someone else. He loves responsibility and to take care of others. And there is much less reason that he would have agreed that someone who is awaiting trial for murder should adopt his nephew.
        • And even if Jack would have agreed to such a thing, the state wouldn't allow a person awaiting trial to adopt a baby.
        • Also, Claire's Aaron is australian, not american, for his mother is australian and he wasn't born on USA territory. Most likely, authorities would have returned him to Australia, rather than having Kate adopt him.
  • Jack and Kate were briefly married after their rescue, and had custody of Aaron, but they split up over Jack's drinking/drug problem. That's why Jack openly admitted he doesn't love her "anymore".
    • Or maybe Jack's drinking/drug problem is an effect from the divorce.
    • Doesn't it seem more likely that this flashforward takes place before Jack's descent into alcoholism?
    • Indeed, when Kate meet Jack after her trial, he claims he has to go back to the hospital whereas in the Jack's flashforward, he's fired of the hospital. So, Kate's flashforward takes place before Jack's.
  • The eight that Jack claims to have survived the crash are: Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, the one unrevealed member of the Oceanic 6, Claire, and one more. Claire was known to be pregnant (obviously) and much of the sympathy Kate's lawyer hopes to engender is that she cared for the baby after Claire's death, which in the cover story happened shortly after her giving birth to Aaron. The world knows she is not Aaron's mother, but Aaron does not. Aaron is therefore one of the Oceanic 6, but not one of the eight survivors Jack references in his testimony.
    • There's no way that someone accused of murder could legally adopt a baby from another country. Also Claire has a living Aunt in Sydney so she would be more likely to get custody of Aaron if it was known that he was Claire's child. Aaron is Kate's biological child by Sawyer and the reason Jack doesn't want to see him is that he is doesn't want to be reminded of Sawyer and the island.
      • That is not good enough reason for not wanting to see Aaron. What fault does he have. This is not how Jack would act. Jack cannot see the baby due to some sort of guilt. We just don't know from what but feeling resposable for Claire's death seems to be ths most plausible reason.
      • As to Kate having custody of Aaron: She told everyone that he was her baby and the other 5 covered up or in fact he is her baby.
  • In Through the Looking Glass Kate is referring to Aaron when she says "he is going to be wondering where I am."
  • Aaron IS Claires son. On the last flight (or boat ride) off of the island before the freighter leaves, there is limited room, and Kate is one of those on it. Perhaps they drew straws, or Sawyer and/or Jack insisted she be on it. Claire gave her Aaron, and asked her to take care of him. Since Kate knew that with her record, she would not be allowed to keep Aaron unless she was his mother, she claimed, with the agreement of the rest of the Oceanic 6, that she was.
  • Aaron's momentarily somewhat odd facial appearance has something to do with what the Others were injecting Claire while she was pregnant
    • Or its an indication of what he is going to become.
    • If Aaron is Kate's baby, he might have been affected by whatever affects babies who are conceived on the island.
    • Or, he's a three-year-old just waking up from a nap. Children often make funny faces upon awaking.
  • During Jack's testimony, he says "She tried to save the other two but..." and is cut off by Kate. This infers that only 6 make it past the first short while post crash. This could mean that Claire is either one of the Oceanic 6, which doesn't make sense because she'd have Aaron, or that the official cover story doesn't include Claire surviving at all, which supports the theory that Kate is passing Aaron off as her own.
  • Jack doesn't want to see Aaron because the child has special powers that frighten him.
  • Jack doesn't want to see Aaron because the child is considered to be a "messiah" of the island, perhaps the second coming of Jacob.
    • This could be in relationship with the four toes horned figures on the wall on the side of Aaron's bed. They seem to be some sort of a child holding the hand of one of his/her parent. If Aaron sees himself that way, he could be the successor to the four toes figure portraied in the statue, a role that he could be granted by the status of "born on the island".

Daniel and Charlotte

  • Charlotte wasn't testing Daniel for his memory, she was testing him for psychic or mind-reading abilities.
  • The three-card game was not a simple memory test, but an elaborate card-counting game of genius-level difficulty, which we only caught the end of.
    • Charlotte opens the scene by saying "Time. Okay, what do you remember?" It's clearly a memory test. It's unclear how much time has past since she turned the cards over and when she says "Time." Typically it implies that a short-period of time has passed, similar to when you play a game with an egg-timer and the sands run out. Someone says "time."
    • Charlotte saying "2 out of 3" would imply (though obviously and intentionally not definitively conclude) that it is a memory test, and for some reason Daniel has lost his short term memory capacity, or it is impaired. This could be due to something weird with the island itself, though this is doubtful since no one else is experiencing anything similar, or it could be the result of his parachuting/crash landing.
      • It could also mean that he got correctly guessed 2 out of 3 cards (meaning it is some kind of genius or psychic powers test) but we're meant to think it's a memory test.
        • He says "the first one WAS..." the "was" seems to imply that he isn't guessing them, or using psychic powers. It seems to imply he is trying to recall them. Otherwise he would have said "the first one IS..."
  • Daniel has memory problems -- it was revealed in the enhanced version of Confirmed Dead that the woman with Daniel in that episode was his "caretaker" and not his wife. Daniel could have early onset Alzheimer's or something similar. That is also why he cries when he sees the plane wreckage but doesn't know why; his mental faculties are diminished. These memory issues could be solved by the island's magical and mysterious properties.
    • He cries because he can't remember something he knows is important about the flight 815.
    • Daniel may have wanted to visit the island to remedy his psychiatric or neurological deficits.
      • The frieghter team did not choose to go to the island, they were recruited by Abbadon/Naomi.
    • This would also explain why it looks like he's thinking so hard whenever he answers peoples questions. It seems like he trying very hard to remember what he's suppose to say.
      • In Confirmed Dead, when Jack asks Daniel his name, he has to pause and think about it.
    • It would also explain why he didn't want the final spot on the helicopter leaving the island.
  • Daniel is like Desmond and Ms. Hawking and he went through this time loop before. He is trying to remember the cards from the last time he lived through that moment.
    • If he had lived through this before he would remember many things more striking and relevant than mere cards, such as the topography of the island and the identities of the Losties.
      • There's a chance that by being sent through the loop multiple times he has forgotten much of what was on the island and the repetition is driving him crazy. He may have been placed on the freighter by Abbadon to not only conduct experiments but also to be an experiment. The cards could be something they've tried in the past and he's making progress. As his memory improves, he'll recall locations, names and so forth.
        • He said, "this is bad" in reference to the clocks because the last time he was in the loop, the times were more in sync.
      • Desmond doesn't remember everything either, only patchy stuff and some memories that come to him through visions.
  • Daniel had psychic abilities which wained. The abilities are coming back "there is some progress" now that he's on the island.
  • Daniel is a savant. Hanso was doing memory research with savants (see Mental Health Appeal). Daniel was seen with a caretaker in a previous episode flashback, his speech patterns are strange, as if he is trying to speak faster than he can think and he comes across as a bit addle-minded (confused) at times. Yet his skills as a scientist are very acute. Very typical of a savant. He has a connection to the Mental Health Appeal studies and that is why he was picked for this team sent to the island. Charlotte and Daniel were not doing psychic experiments, she was testing if his memory was improving.

The Helicopter

  • Because time is different on the island from the real world, this could explain why the helicopter seems to have vanished.
    • Even if to the outside world many hours have passed, to the helicopter and his occupants the time of the trip is probably pretty much shorter and closer to a regular trip. When they will arrive to the boat or if they turn around and come back to the island, people are going to tell them that they left for a day but they are going to say that they only left for a couple of hours; When traveling between the Island and the boat, time seems to slow down for the traveling object and his occupants. The helicopter did not vanish, it is just in a place where the space time is distorted.
    • How long is a "regular trip"?
      • It could vary based on the mass of the object. The missle only took about 30 minutes, but a Helicopter maybe a full day.
        • The time-delay between the outside world and the island may be related to the speed at which the gulf between them is closed, or perhaps the angle of incidence. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, and appear to arrive almost instantaneously. A missile traveling much slower has a time distortion of 30 minutes. A helicopter traveling much slower than a missile would encounter even more delay. The amount of delay may not be linear. We may also find that the time delay between the island and the outside world may work differently based upon your direction to/from the island, perhaps the time-delay moving from the island to the outside world is in the other direction, into the past (in the outside world).
          • And the delay for a small boat should be even longer, Michael and Walt must have taken a long time to cross it.
    • We know that Sayid survives beyond the Island
  • The helicopter is already on the boat, but Regina is lying.
    • Maybe the number they called is similar to the "tell my sister I love her" line, in that it indicates they are making the call under duress.
    • Minkowski didn't answer the other phone line because he has been taken hostage by Sayid and Desmond, who both were armed when boarding the helicopter, and likely able to take the crew by suprise. Regina is lying about the arival of the helicopter, or answering the phone at gun point.
      • Unlikely, if Sayid and Desmond had Regina under control, they would have wanted to infrom their friends about it
      • Regina and/or Ben's "Man on the Boat" could be the one that has taken Minkowski hostage. Minkowski was also "unavailable" when Miles called.
  • The helicopter tried to get away from a storm, thus changing its bearing. Because of this, they cannot leave the area around the island. To leave or come, you must go a specific bearing. This is why Faraday told them to follow the same bearing and why Ben told Michael to follow 325 in season 2.
    • The bearing that one enters the island might need to be followed to exit. Perhaps the island is the convergence point of various timelines, and the bearing in/out represents the specific timeline that object or person existed in. By leaving at the wrong bearing, the object or people are an infection in the alternate timeline, which causes problems.
      • Desmond's precognition may come from his sailing in circles around the island, and the 'zap' from turning the override key in the hatch.
  • The helicopter should run out of fuel if it's been in the air for a full day.
    • The helicopter may not have been in the air for a "full" day by "real time" standards.
    • In the place the helicopter is time run slower; one hour for them was just one hour of fuel. While one hour passed aboard of the helicopter 24 passed outside in the Island, same thing happened with the small rocket and didn't went out of fuel even if it was way longer in the air than supposed to be.
  • Faraday told him to leave via the same bearing to reverse the time effects identically. If they had to change course because of the storm (see the promo for 4x05), then the time effects will not be reversed and thus it could take them longer to get back (just like the missile). Different trajectories could affect the time gradient. Different masses too. Or a combination of both.
  • Why didn't Frank at least object to them bringing guns with them?
  • When the raft headed out it some how teleported from once side of the island to the other side, the same may be said for the helecoptor.

Time Anomalies

  • Many of the most influential themes have something to do with time distortion and time travelers like Desmond who seems to be trapped in some kind of time loop. When Desmond meets Mrs. Hawking, she knew events that were going to happen just like him. There are probably more time travellers besides Desmond and Mrs. Hawking. Maybe Ben is a time traveller and that's why Miles says "don't talk to me like you talk to them" "I know what you can do"; Maybe the way he plans to get his money involves in some way this ability.
    • Richard is the one most likely to be a time traveler, based on his apparent lack of aging.
      • Desmond only his mind seams to travel not his body. However maybe you are on something; we already know that time is screwed up when people come and leave from the island, maybe it can even make you go back or forward in time.
  • In regards to the book Locke gave Ben entitled "Valis" (a story in which an ancient, mechanical intelligence orbiting the earth has been guiding people’s thoughts), Locke instructs him that he "might catch something you missed the first time around." This is an allusion, on the part of the writers, that Ben does experience "time looping" and HAS lived through island events before, perhaps explaining why he always seems one step in front of everybody.
    • He surely would have done something to prevent the massacre of his people at the beach and the contact of the Freighters if that were the case.
      • He might not have been able to, the way Mrs. Hawking couldn't save the man with the shoes and Desmond couldn't save Charlie.
  • Since Kate wasn't visibly pregnant at the time of the crash, meaning that Aaron would be too old to plausibly be her son (assuming they leave the island 4 months after the crash, that means she has a 2.5 month old son four months after getting on the plane not visibly pregnant), this supports the theory of time running at a different speed on the island (similar to walt's apparent "growing too fast").
    • Murder trials can take months, sometimes even years to go through. For example, OJ Simpson was arraigned on June 21, 1994. There was plenty of concern about OJ's celebrity and how any jury would be unbiased towards him. His trial started on January 25, 1995 and the jury came back with their verdict October 3, 1995. It is almost a certainty that Kate would have a certain degree of celebrity and there would be tons of coverage about a woman who would survive a plane crash only to go to prison on her return.

Kate

  • Kate is incapable of loving anyone. All she wants from Jack is his approval for mothering Claire's baby and calling it her own.
    • This statement is a little too psychoanalytical and not relevant to the narrative.
    • If Kate were a sociopath, she would not have explained anything to Kevin Callis when leaving him, and she certainly would not have returned his Mothers locket. In addition, her love for the father who raised her, Sam Austen, also appeared to be genuine.
      • Kevin Callis isn't a good example considering that she drugged him before explaining anything. Sam Austen was probably the only healthy relationship she had in her life.
        • However, Kate drugged him precisely BECAUSE she loved him. As a policeman, if he were to be discovered by the press as having married an on-the-run convict, he would be disgraced. Since she drugged him, he would be cleared of suspicion in her disappearance. On island, it is obvious that Kate cares (loves?) both Jack and Sawyer, although she is incapable of deciding. But again, this entire conversation may not be relevant to this board.
  • Kate never cared about her mother. All she wanted from her mother was approval for murdering Wayne.
    • This is contradictory. Kate's current response is that of many children who have a parent that sides with the abusive person (parent/relative/friend) over the child who has made the accusation or observation of the abuse.
    • This is something contradictory considering she murdered Wayne for her mother in the first place.
      • This is not that contradictory considering that it appeared that the real motivation for Wayne's murder was Kate's discovery that he was her real father. While she was angry at the abuse her mother suffered, the true tipping point to commit murder was Kate's revulsion of this discovery.
        • Kate did not discover this until after she killed him.
  • Kate is facing a very hard choices. She knows she is pregnant from Sawyer and she knows she is likely to die if she stays in the island. But she is very afraid that if she leaves the island she will end up in jail. So she is facing a very hard choice: if she stays she and the baby die, if she leaves she will be able to have the baby but she will end up in jail and will also leave Sawyer behind (who does not want to leave the island).
    • In this episode Kate was uncertain about staying with Sawyer. She might have actually wanted to stay with him, but because of the hard choices she was to make (death or prison) she finally decides she has to get off the island and so she goes back to the beach. That would explain why she acts in a such a confusing way (first staying, then asking Miles, then leaving).
    • Mirror this to the conflict in her future. Jack/Hurley/Others? know they need to get back to the island, but if Kate goes, she will be violating her parole, potentially losing Aaron to foster care. This is assuming that something occurs to Kate to convince her she must try and return as well.
  • Kate is not pregnant yet, but might get pregnant before leaving the island.
  • When Kate enters the courthouse a guy with beard, white t-shirt and an open shirt shouts something about "Hugo".

General

  • The deal giving Kate probation is a condition of the cover-up. Kate agrees to lie about the crash in exchange for not going to jail. [Sure, this could be part of it, but you really need to provide some support for theories like this. Folks, lets try to draw a line between "theories" and naked speculation.]
    • Kate, along with the other 5 members of the O6, are already lying about the crash, before her deal with the DA.
      • That doesn't mean the easy sentence isn't the fulfillment of the quid pro quo.
    • According to the definition of "eggtown" posted on the episode page, it "represents a deal with undesirable outcomes in either case." If the writers were suggesting the title applies to something on this show, Kate's plea bargain could be what they mean. Going through with the trial is one outcome, with possible jail time, and the plea bargain is the other outcome. The undesirable element of her plea bargain could be that she has to stay in California for 10 years.
    • Or, if we don't assume Miles is passing coded messages to Ben (see below), perhaps Mile's offer to Ben is an "eggtown" ruse. If Miles reports to his employers that Ben is alive, the consequences could be quite dire for Ben. However, for whatever reason, giving Miles $3.2 million could also result in a very negative outcome for Ben.
  • The District Attorney is part of the conspiracy involved with the freighter folks and Matthew Abaddon. That is why she was so insistent upon Kate staying in one place - they want to keep a close eye on all of the Oceanic 6.
  • Sun calling the baby her baby... Maybe Jin isn't the father...
    • Juliet's sonogram confirmed, at least in Sun's mind, that Jin is the father.
      • Actually, Juliet's sonogram confirms that the baby was conceived on the island. Based on certain clues released in the mobisodes (Missing Pieces -- which are cannon), Sun could have been with someone else while on the island.
    • Sun's calling the baby hers could indicate that she isn't sure how their new relationship will stand up to life off the island.
    • If something is "ours", it's both "mine" and "yours". So, it does not mean that it isn't Jin's baby. It's still Sun's baby wether or not it's Jin's.
      • In Korean culture the possessive pronoun used when referring to a person is always 'our' in relation to a family, because a family is viewed as a single unit. 'our house' 'our father' 'our brother' even if there is only one child.
  • In the Backgammon game between Locke and Sawyer, Locke is using the black pieces as opposed to white, indicating a turn towards the "dark side," whatever that may mean at this point.
    • In much fairness, Sawyer opened the game and went immediately for the white pieces, I don't think Locke had much choice in the matter.
  • Juliet suggests trying another number on the freighter phone - they are Dharma, and she has communicated with them, and that's how they know where Ben is and what he has done.
    • It seemed more like she was suggesting that they just try dialing some other number. Which begs the question, why haven't they tried to call someone besides the boat? A satellite phone is still, y'know, A PHONE.

Miles and Ben

  • Miles offering Ben $3.2 million is a coded message that Miles was tasked with passing on to Ben. Ben and Miles played out the fact that it was an actual deal for the sake of Kate's presence, hence the reason for Miles' initially asking for privacy.
    • This would not be unusual, since similar situation has occurred with Miles in Confirmed Dead. Naomi said "tell my sister that I love her", an emergency code.
    • There could have also been an important time slipped into the message. Miles asked for three days (for "the money") Ben asked for more time, so Miles then asked for one week. That may be the amount of time until something happens. It could be a way for the two to coordinate plans.
      • Excellent theory. Miles is Ben's man on the boat. He is speaking in code to let Ben know what is going on without raising suspicion.
        • Supported by the fact that Miles has Ben's same knowledge on the losties and their backgrounds.
          • Miles is then lying about the world knowing of Kate's past. The rest of the freighter crew doesn't know about Kate's criminal history, it is just a manipulation by Ben to keep her on the island.
            • If Miles is the mole, it doesn't really speak either way to what the Freighties know about Kate or anyone eles.
        • But we know that Miles was recruited by Abaddon for Naomi's team, unless Ben and Abaddon are working together.
          • Miles could have worked for Ben before even being approached by Abaddon.
          • Ben could have contacted Miles after he was recruited. He has proven to be shrewed enough to know who he can and can not manipulate, and Miles, more than any of the others, seems motivated by money, which Ben seems to have ample supply of.
        • 3.2 million ---> 3 x 2 = 6 ---> Six people will be taken off the island, the Oceanic 6?
          • Ben: "Why not 3.3? Why not 3.4?" -- he's fishing for information on why those six have been selected, however Miles does not have any more to tell him.
          • Alternatively this is a reference to the 5 other surviving freighties (Daniel, Charlotte, Frank, Minkowsky, Regina) - 3 are against them and 2 on "their" side, or vice versa.
            • Charlotte's silence in front of Daniel and Frank might suggest that she is in cahoots, with either Regina or Minkowsky being the other.
          • 3.2 million is actually 3, then a 2, then 5 zeroes, or 325, the bearing Michael was told to follow to get off the island. This could have some connection.
            • They both know the bearing, why would they talk in code about it?
          • It's ulikely Ben would want the O6 off the island, and that he won't get to choose who the O6 are.
            • Unless we're also referring to Jacob's list here. In "Par Avion", Mikhail lists reasons several losties are NOT on Jacob's list (Sayid, Kate, Locke - although Locke may be erased from the list). It's also been said (by Tom) that Jack's not on the list either. Bea Klugh's list also has Hurley and Sawyer on it. Perhaps Jacob's been trying to expell certain people from the Island.
        • "3.2" could refer to a time- 3:20. Ben's 3.3 or 3.4 could be 3:30 and 3:40. Miles and Ben could be arguing about a date and time for something. It could also be some sort of coordinates for a place on or off the island, for some sort of meeting.
  • 3.2 million is Mile's share of the money that all 5 of them were going to get for bringing Ben back 3.2m x 5 = 16m If Miles doesn't bring Ben back he will still get his 3.2m but from Ben instead.
    • Unlikely, Miles would ask for more money as he is risking himself by lying. and someone like Frank, which seems to just be a pilot would not get the exact same amont of pay as the rest.
      • I agree with your first point, but its likely that Frank would be given the same amount as the rest of the group as being "just a pilot" is in itself a very risky job. Getting to and from this island isn't exactly the easiest thing to do.
  • The Freighties already know that Ben has a man on their boat and are using him as a double agent. When Charlotte returned with Sayid at the end of the economist she didn't bother telling Daniel or Frank that Ben had said he had a man on the boat, she also didn't bother phoning Regina to tell her. Either Charlotte is the 'man' on the boat, which seems unlikely, or the Freighties have known about Ben's infiltration all along.
    • Or Charlotte just related the information about Ben's spy to her teammates in an off-camera moment. Or didn't want to rock the boat by revealing it until she was safely back on the boat and away from the Losties.
      • I have a feeling that it could be Miles and that the freighties did know about it. Charlotte and Sayid may have discussed this on the way back to camp, Daniel and Charlotte don't seem to be even slightly worried about Miles being taken. Maybe they knew all along that he was the spy.
  • The 3.2 is in refrence to an amount of money Miles needs off island for a specific reason. the freighties will pay him for going if he finds Ben or not and he already said it was a ton of money. he wants the additional 3.2 for something or someone else (debt, ransom, buy a fire station to ghostbust out of)
  • 3.2 is 23 (one of the numbers) backwards, with a decimal. Ben asking why Miles didn't pick a similar number is just a way for the writers to poke fun at themselves for inserting the numbers whenever possible.
    • When you need to remove a decimal point, and reverse the order of the numbers, it's likely it has nothing to do with the numbers. (why not just ask for $4 million, thats one of the numbers...)
      • Because then it would be the writers using the numbers, not the writer's poking fun at the people who obsessively try to juggle the numbers around trying to find some hidden meaning behind them.
  • Miles may be linked with Marvin Candle. This can expain how he meets Ben and become his man on the boat
