The economist is the unseen employer of Elsa. Sayid was ordered to kill him by Benjamin Linus. Little is known about the economist, except that Elsa claims that he is very old-fashioned in his business, as evinced by his use of a pager. Elsa explained that he was an innocent man, but it became clear that he was not (as he hired Elsa to spy on Sayid).
