Diamonds are the hardest known natural substance, and is currently a treasured commodity as a gemstone. Diamonds have been featured on a number of occasions in Lost.

Paulo and Nikki plot to murder Howard L. Zukerman, presumably to be able to steal these diamonds, worth $8 million dollars. Following Zukerman's murder, Nikki and Paulo break into his safe, and steal the diamonds, which he had been hiding in a black pouch inside the innermost doll of the Matryoshka doll. They are planning to flee Sydney with the diamonds, and end up on the doomed Oceanic Flight 815.
Following the crash, Nikki is desperate to find the bag containing the doll and the diamonds, and enlists Paulo to help her scour the island looking for it. Paulo finds the bag (following a tip Nikki received from Kate) in the bottom of the waterfall where the Halliburton case had also been found. Paulo tells Nikki he was unable to find the bag, however he returns later to retrieve the doll and the diamonds. He hides the diamonds in the toilet tank in the Pearl. While hiding the diamonds, he overhears a conversation between Juliet and Ben regarding how Ben is going to convince Jack to do his surgery.)
Once the Pearl is discovered by Locke and Eko, Paulo removes the diamonds from the toilet and begins keeping them on his person (inside of his pants). Nikki discovers that Paulo had indeed found the bag, when he clumsily drops a packet of nicotine gum, which had also been in the bag. Furious, she leads Paulo into the jungle and throws a Medusa spider at him, causing nearly instant paralysis. Nikki searches Paulo and quickly locates the diamonds. While still able to speak, he tells Nikki that he did not want to tell Nikki he found the bag, for fear that she would no longer need him. Paulo spots another Medusa spider crawling on Nikki's shoe. Unable to speak, Paulo appears to try to communicate with his eyes that the spider is about to bite, but he is unsuccessful. After the spider bites Nikki, she runs a few paces and frantically buries the bag.
When Nikki and Paulo are found, paralyzed (and thought to be dead) Sawyer notices the dirt under Nikki's fingernails and the fresh mound of dirt, and quickly returns to the scene and claims the diamonds for himself. When confronted about his possible involvement in Nikki and Paulo's "deaths," Sawyer reveals his motives and gives the diamonds to Sun. However when Sun reveals to Sawyer that she knows that he and Charlie were responsible for her kidnapping, she gives the diamonds back to him, stating that they have no value on the island.
While burying Nikki and Paulo (believed to be dead), Sawyer removes the diamonds from their pouch and sprinkles them over their bodies. The diamonds were buried with the bodies, untill Miles Straume took them.
