  • The Cable is part of an ELF Antenna used for secure communications with submarines and the outside world.
  • Though it appears outwardly to be a cable, it is a tube transferring oxygen, water, or some other substance between The Island and The Looking Glass.
  • It has no purpose other than a way to find The Looking Glass, as Charlie and Desmond did in Through The Looking Glass. This is apparent by the fact that the cable doesn't lead to anything on the Island—it just ends somewhere in the jungle (Numbers (episode). Also, this explains why the Others haven't tried to fix the damage done to it—if it's frayed & beat up, it still serves its purpose.
