The barracks is a location that was first mentioned by Dr. Mark Wickmund in the Pearl Orientation Video. In the video Wickmund instructed the Pearl occupant to (at the end of their 8 hour shift) "proceed to the Pala ferry which will take you back to the barracks". ("?")

Later, Sayid found a map in the Flame with the barracks marked on it. According to Sayid the map showed "electrical and data cabling running from the Flame...to a place called the barracks". He also said that the barracks were "comprised of houses and dormitories, with water and power, large enough to accommodate an entire community". ("Enter 77")

Sayid, Kate, and Locke finally arrived at the barracks in "Par Avion", where they saw that it was in fact Otherville, home of the Others.

Sonic Barrier

A sonic barrier surrounds the entire barracks encampment. This barrier presumably uses lethal force by means of a sonic wave which can cause a cerebral hemorrhage. In "Par Avion", John Locke pushed Mikhail Bakunin through the barrier to test to see if it was still in operation. After his subsequent death, Kate, Locke, Sayid, and Danielle built a ramp out of a tree trunk in order to scale the barrier and bypass it.
