Ajira Flight 316

Ajira Airways Flight 316, a Boeing 737, was a scheduled flight from Los Angeles, California, United States to Honolulu and Guam, a U.S. territory in the western Pacific. It was chosen by Eloise Hawking as a flight for the Oceanic 6 to use to return to the Island. She said that the flight's route was passing right through the window needed to get back to the Island.

Crew and passengers

The pilot of Flight 316 was Frank Lapidus. Flight attendant Rupa Krishnavani was aboard, as were the Oceanic 6, minus Aaron. Benjamin Linus, John Locke's corpse, Sayid's escort and a man who offered Jack his condolences were also aboard the flight. Several other unnamed flight attendants were aboard as were several dozen passengers. Prior to boarding the plane, Hurley bought all 78 free seats, presumably attempting to save as many lives as he could if in fact the plane crashed.("316")

Disappearance

While traveling, the plane hit heavy turbulence. After a few minutes of this turbulence, a bright white light filled the plane's cabin. Following this light, Jack, Kate, and Hurley found themselves in various places across the Island. None of them had any recollection of a crash, nor of anything past the white light. No other passengers or parts of the plane were to be seen. ("316")

Proxies and Substitutes

As Eloise Hawking mentioned to Jack, a proxy was needed in order for Jack to return to the Island. In an attempt to recreate the circumstances that led him to board flight 815, Jack had to place an object that belonged to his late father inside Locke's coffin. Other similarities were showed during flight 316, which suggested that other proxies were used:

• Sayid was escorted by a law enforcer.
  • Kate was escorted by Edward Mars. ("Tabula Rasa")
• Hurley read a comic book, and carried a guitar.
  • Hurley read a Spanish comic book; Charlie carried a guitar. ("Exodus, Part 2")
• Ben got up to use the restroom right before the "crash", and was not in his assigned seat when the plane "crashed"
  • Charlie went to use the restroom right before the crash and was not in his assigned seat when the plane crashed.
• Sun was holding on to her husbands wedding ring.
  • Rose had Bernard's wedding ring during the crash. ("Pilot, Part 1")
