Aande stones

The stones found on the bodies.

The Adam and Eve bodies (as named by Locke) were skeletons found in the cave by Jack but have not been seen since. They were carrying one black, one white stone just like the stones Locke carries. Jack took these stones and neglected to mention them when Locke asked what had been discovered. Believed to have been dead 50+ years due to the deterioration of their clothing. In the dream Claire has while sleepwalking, before finding blood in her baby's crib, John Locke is playing cards on a tree-stump. When he looks up towards her, telling her about her child, the black and white stones are in the place of his eyes.

Theories

  • High priests of Israel are theorized (at least by Mormons) to have used different valuable gems with various inscriptions on them (called Urim and Thummim) to decide God's will and help in decision making. The black and white stones are possibly such devices.
  • The Urim and Thummim were the revelation stones used by the Kohen HaGadol (the High Priest) of Israel. It is NOT a Mormon theory, but a known part of Jewish tradition and history. The Urim and Thummim, which translates to Lights and Illuminations, were a black stone and a white stone which the words Urim u'Thummim on them, one word on each stone. The stones were used for revelation in conjuction with the Breastpiece of The High Priest, Hoshen HaMishpat in Hebrew, the Breastpiece of Judgement. The Hoshen was an embroidered work with gemstones, enlayed in gold, affixed to the piece. The piece itself functioned like a pouch. The gemstones numbered 12, one for each tribe of Israel. The names of the tribes were engraved on the stone, and on the three of the stones, the names Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob) were engraved. Together, the names on all of these gemstones of the breastpiece covered all twenty-one letters of the Hebrew alphabet (some repeated obviously). Inside of the Holy of Holies, the Kadosh Kadoshim, was an eternal flame, Aysh Tamid. When the High Priest would enter the Kadosh Kadoshim the Aysh Tamid would reflect off of the gemstones in a certain matter, illuminating individual letters engraved on the gemstones, thus divining the revelation. The Urim and Thummim were then used for judgement of yes or no answers, removed from the pouch after the illumination of the letters. This is well documented in Judaic and Rabbinic literature, and is most easily accessible through the Temple Institute in Jerusalem, online at templeinstitute.org
  • These stones play an important role in the book "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coehlo. A book that is entirely about destiny, fate, and finding your place in the universe.
  • Locke introduces Backgammon as a game where "there are two players; one black, one white."
  • These are the remains of Gerald and Karen DeGroot.
  • These are the remains of Jack and Kate, having traveled to the past after another Incident at some point in the future.
  • These are the remains of the French expedition.
    • (This is unlikely since the remains are estimated to be 50+ years old, and the French expedition arrived less thatn 20 years ago - however, the bodies may have suffered an advanced rate of decay for whatever reason)
  • These are the remains of previous inhabitants of the hatch(es).
  • These are the remains of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan, who mysteriously disappeared over the Pacific Ocean during a circumnavigational flight in 1937.
  • The black and white stones could also be a reference to yin and yang. This ties into the online theories of "twinness" that Rousseau proposed. This also relates to Boone's t-shirt (84), and the original status of Adam and Eve as created from a whole. (If Eve was created from Adam's rib, then together they constitute a whole. Apart, like yin and yang, two complementary parts of one.)
  • Could be members of a native group (pre-Dharma) who built the four-toed statue.
  • Are the remains of an earlier, unidentified group of castaways. They may have been put there by the writers merely to emphasize that the survivors of flight 815 are hardly the first (nor last) group of castaways to have ended up on the island.
