Adam Rutherford was a wealthy man living in Los Angeles with his daughter Shannon Rutherford, step-son Boone Carlyle, and his wife Sabrina Carlyle.

The father of Shannon Rutherford, Adam Rutherford was remarried to Sabrina Carlyle in 1992 when Shannon was only eight. He was driving his car in late 2001 when he was involved in a head-on collision with a vehicle driven by Sarah Wagner. Brought into the emergency room at St. Sebastian Hospital at the same time as Wagner, ER doctor Jack Shephard was forced to triage the two patients, opting to attend to the woman, even though her injuries appeared to be more severe. While he treated her injuries, the intern Brian Costas monitoring Rutherford failed to properly intubate Rutherford and was unable to prevent the man from dying.

Arriving in the ER soon after, Rutherford's family was notified of his passing, with his time of death being 8:15 AM. Despite Adam being alive when initially arriving at the hospital, the doctor informing Shannon and Sabrina of his death claims he died at the scene of the accident. ("Abandoned") His legacy would play out over the following weeks as his will revealed that his fortune was to be left solely in the hands of his wife, leaving his daughter without financial assistance following a cold dismissal by her step-mother. ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")

Behind the scenes[]
