Defining an "A-Mission"

An "A-Mission" refers to a mission of the Lost A-Team, which usually includes a combination of Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke and Sayid. The term was dubbed by Charlie (a frequent mission-goer who, in his own opinion, fell short of being a member of the A-Team) ("Everybody Hates Hugo") and later referenced by Sawyer ("Exposé"). For this article, Charlie's definition will be the one that is used. To be considered an "A-Mission", at least one member must be present for the entirety of the mission.

However, for the purposes of this article, an "A-Mission" is defined as a quest which departs from the main body of the survivors, and involves either rescue, assistance to another, or betterment of the survivor community as a whole. Therefore, missions such as when Sawyer went hunting for the boar or tree frog do not fall on the term "A-Mission" as these were personal quests.

The storyline of Lost can be summarized by describing the "A-Missions", as they tend to occur at major plot junctures. Furthermore, one of the members of a team has often been the focus of that episode's flashback; thus characters who participate less often in such "A-Teams" also seem to have fewer flashback episodes.

In addition to storyline principles demonstrated through "A-Missions", character traits become increasingly visible. Jack's "de-facto" leadership is seen as many of the missions are conducted under his leadership. Charlie's self-destructive tendencies show up in the way his frivolous conversation causes other members to leave him behind. Kate's "born to run" mentality is also visible, seeing as she has gone on the most missions, vastly more then her colleagues.

The term for an Others mission is "O-Mission", and are interpreted as reactions in the form of direct responses to the "A-Missions".

Season 1

The 1st Season established the "A-Mission" as being one of an exploratory or survival nature being undertaken by strictly the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. This began the inception of the "A-Team" comprised of Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer, and Sayid.

Relation to Lost storyline: Jack, Locke, and Sawyer began to arm up and chase after Michael, telling Kate to stay behind. Shortly into the trip, the three of them heard several gunshots and quickened their pace, yet still did not find Michael. As night fell, Locke told Jack he had lost the trail, at which point, Tom appeared from the shadows and gave the three an ultimatum: either leave their guns and return to their camp or else he would shoot Kate (who had come along after all and had gotten captured). Jack relented, and the four returned to camp without Michael. It was at this point that Jack approached Ana Lucia about starting an army.

Interrogate "Henry Gale"

Interrogate "Henry Gale""
2x14 SayidAndBenry

Corresponding F-Mission: None
Background: After being warned by Ana Lucia, Sayid intercepted Danielle Rousseau in the jungle, who took him to a man she had captured in a net the previous night. Rousseau shot him with a crossbow, and Sayid took him to the Swan for medical treatment from Jack. Sayid heeded Rousseau’s warning that this man was an Other.
Discoveries: The account of Henry Gale’s time on the Island, the countdown timer’s hieroglyphs
Relation to Lost storyline: Sayid made a pact with Locke to change the combination to the armory lock, so Sayid could be alone with “Henry Gale.” When Locke agreed, Sayid began to question “Henry” about his life, while Jack struggled to get inside the armory. As Sayid grew more suspicious of “Henry,” he began to take out his anguish over Shannon on his prisoner by beating him while screaming at him. Jack eventually convinced Locke to open the door, leaving him little time to push the button. Sayid was pulled off of Henry, but he felt no remorse and still believed him to be “one of them.”

Outcome: Accomplished
Episodes: "The Whole Truth", "Lockdown"
A Team Members: Sayid, Ana Lucia
Also Involved: Charlie
Mission: To find Henry Gale's balloon, and confirm whether he was telling the truth about himself.
Corresponding O-Mission: None
Corresponding F-Mission: None
Background: To convince his captors of his truthfulness, “Henry” drew a map to a balloon that was mentioned in his story. Ana Lucia, who was brought in to question the captive “Henry,” took the map to Sayid and Charlie since she believed telling Jack and Locke would only further their growing hostility toward one another. The three embarked on a journey across the Island to find the balloon with a smiley face on the top.
Discoveries: The balloon, the prisoner’s tale about being “Henry Gale” was false; the real Henry Gale's grave, the real Henry Gale's letter on a $20 bill
Relation to Lost storyline: When Jack and Locke found out what “Henry” had done, they were frustrated and locked him back up. In the clearing, the three survivors found the balloon stranded in the canopy above and the grave where “Henry” said he had buried his wife, Jennifer. When the party returned, they said that the story had checked out, but Sayid still did not believe “Henry” so he dug up his wife’s grave. He found the body of a man, whose wallet driver’s license showed his name was “Henry Gale.”

Resolve the Lockdown Situation

Resolve the Lockdown Situation
Outcome: Half-accomplished; The “lockdown” situation resolved itself after time, although “Henry” lied to Locke that the timer reset itself and he never entered the numbers or pushed the button.

Episodes: "Lockdown"
A Team Members: Locke
Also Involved:Henry Gale
Mission: To get the blast doors to retract and push the button before the timer reached zero.
Corresponding O-Mission: None
Corresponding F-Mission: None
Background: While guarding “Henry,” Locke noticed that the Swan speakers were functioning for the first time, with a voice speaking through static. He eventually deduced it to be a timer, but by that time it was too late. The blast doors surrounding the computer room went down, with only a crowbar keeping one up.
Discoveries: Blast door map, the DHARMA supply drop.
Relation to Lost storyline: Locke realized that he couldn’t jam the door up by himself, so he released “Henry” from the armory to aid him. This led to failure when the door came down on Locke’s legs, pinning him underneath it, leaving “Henry” to crawl through the vents and push the button for him. Eventually, the timer reached zero and the lights went out, but a blacklight came on and a map of the Island and DHARMA stations appeared on one of the doors, then it vanished. Henry swore to Locke that he never entered the numbers or pushed the button. Locke’s faith in pushing the button is shaken for the first time, leading to “Henry’s” further manipulation of Locke.

When Michael is brought to the Swan by Jack and Kate, he claims to have found the Others and describes them as filthy, savages. He riles the survivors up and says they can take the Others out, so Jack goes to Sawyer to get the guns.

A Team Members: Jack, Kate, Locke, Hurley
Also Involved: Libby, Michael
Mission: To save Libby’s life.
Corresponding O-Mission: None
Corresponding F-Mission: None
Background: With the Swan empty, Michael talked Ana Lucia into giving him her gun and entry to the armory to kill “Henry Gale.” When she relented, he shot her dead and in his panic, shot Libby who was down there getting blankets. He then shot himself in the shoulder, freed “Henry,” and set the whole thing up to look as if “Henry” did it. But Libby was still alive from her wounds, much to Michael’s horror.
Discoveries: None
Relation to Lost storyline: Despite Jack's treatment and Sawyer sharing his heroin to soothe Libby's pain, she succumbed to her wounds and died. The deaths of Ana Lucia and Libby became a great motivating factor for the survivors in arming up and going after the Others to get Walt back by force. Eko sought Charlie’s help to get back into the computer room, resulting in them lighting dynamite outside a blast door to no avail.
Discoveries: The fail-safe, the discharge, the tracking station, the cause of the mid-air break-up
Relation to Lost storyline: When Desmond reads the log printout from the Pearl, he is convinced that his negligence (resulting in a system failure on September 22, 2004) caused Oceanic 815 to crash. Resolved in his duty, Locke smashes the Swan computer, causing Desmond to panic and retreat to the fail-safe vent. Season 3

As before, this season opens by continuing the plotlines that wrapped the previous season. Sayid, Sun, and Jin continue their pursuit of Jack, Kate, and Sawyer in "Ambushing the Others", while Locke deals with the aftermath of his crisis of faith in "Saving Mr. Eko" as he prepares to become a leader, thereby introducing three new characters in "The Pearl Revisited": Nikki, Paulo, and Mikhail. This particular mission, however, ended in tragedy, as the newly-saved Eko was killed by the Monster, and the Pearl's video feeds were not able to locate Jack, Kate or Sawyer. (They did, however, discover the presence of Mikhail on the Island.)

Halfway through the season the A-Team takes an aggressive stance toward the Others after Jack is lost in "The Great Hydra Island Escape", which saw Sawyer and Kate make it back to camp. Through a three part aggressive campaign to rescue Jack, many discoveries about the Island have been made (Including The Flame, Mikhail Bakunin, and the Barracks). Also noted is the aid of Danielle in this campaign in hopes to reunite with her daughter, Alex.

Having made it to the Barracks, Kate and Sayid were captured, while Locke destroyed the Others' submarine, furthering his own, still mysterious, motives. Jack, having been promised to leave the Island on The Galaga, is now without a ticket home, is left behind at the camp, along with Kate, Sayid, and Juliet; Locke, however, went with them.

After having returned to camp, it is revealed that Juliet was indeed a spy, planted by Ben, but she changes alliances, and decides to side with the survivors. In a very important mission, Desmond, along with Jin, Charlie, and Hurley, investigate the jungle after one of his "flashes", and discover Naomi, a helicopter pilot from a ship not 80 miles from the Isalnd.

After Juliet explains the Others' plan to kidnap the pregnant women, Jack decides to defeat the Others once and for all. In "Defeating the Others", dynamite is placed in the camp, and Jin, Bernard, and Sayid stay behind to detonate it. Despite being captured, they were rescued by Sawyer, Juliet, and Hurley, and killed all ten members of the attackers.

In order to find rescue after defeating the Others, the Losties prepare for one "final" mission. In "Contacting Naomi's Ship, Charlie and Desmond attempt the suicide mission of disabling the "flooded" Looking Glass station, and Jack leads the survivors to the Radio Tower, to deal with the two deterrents to using Naomi's satellite phone. Charlie dies during his portion of the mission (the station is not flooded, but he still fulfills his fate), but all is accomplished in order to contact the rescue ship. Despite Locke's attempted intervention, by killing Naomi and threating Jack, the latter makes the call.
