O voô 815 da Oceanic Airlines partiu de Sydney, Austrália, no dia 22 de Setembro de 2004, às 14h55, do portão 23, com destino a Los Angeles, Califórnia, Estados Unidos. A viagem foi feita em um Boeing 777, um jato novo, de longa distância que foi lançado em 1994.

Após aproximadamente seis horas de voô, o 815 teve problemas como o seu rádio. O piloto decidiu mudar de rota em direção a Fiji e, aproximadamente duas horas depois, o avião entrou em turbulência.

O avião começou um grande mergulho de bico, e então quebrou em vários pedaços. A área da cauda partiu-se antes, e caiu no mar. Momentos depois, o setor frontal e o meio cairam na ilha.

A queda corresponde precisamente ao horário listado em um histórico impresso de uma descarga eletromagnética, que ocorreu quando Desmond falhou ao digitar o código na Estação Cisne. Entretanto, o motivo exato da queda é incerto, mas parece plausível que um pulso magnético da descarga tenha sido forte o bastante para despedaçar o avião.

Os números aparecem aqui na combinação comum de 815 (ou 0815). Muitos dos personagens estavam sentados em poltronas que continham um dos números, e ainda: o voô partiu às 14h55 (1+4+5+5 = 15) do portão 23.

A queda

O avião, aparentemente despressurizado, partiu-se no ar e caiu em uma remota ilha em algum ponto do Pacífico Sul. Ele foi despedaçado em 4 partes (Cabine/Primeira Classe, Seção Intermediária, Compartimento de Carga e a Parte da Cauda) antes de atingir o solo. The plane apparently depressurized, broke-up and crashed on a remote island somewhere in the South Pacific. It broke into 4 pieces (Cockpit/First Class, Main Fuselage, The Cargo Compartment and the Tail Section) before hitting the ground.

A Parte da Frente do avião caiu no meio da floresta, e todos, com exceção do Piloto, morreram (até agora).

A Seção Intermediária caiu próxima à praia, onde ficaram a maioria dos sobreviventes. Jack, no entanto, foi arremessado na selva.

A Parte da Cauda caiu no oceano, e os sobreviventes precisaram nadar até a praia, com exceção de Bernard cujo assento ficou pendurado em uma área alta da selva.

O Compartimento de Carga caiu próximo das cavernas.

Os sobreviventes podem se recordar de acontecimentos anteriores a queda, mas nada sobre a queda em si. Kate é uma exceção nesse caso, já que disse a Jack no episódio Pilot, Part 1 que ela permaneceu consciente todo o tempo e viu tudo o que aconteceu.

O episódio "Live Together, Die Alone" indica que Desmond não voltou ao Cisne a tempo de digitar o código, criando uma Falha do Sistema. Ele usou o registro de atividade impresso para comparar o horário dessa falha com a data e hora exata da queda, o que o levou a acreditar que ele foi o responsável pelo acidente com o avião. Então, o campo magnético parece ter causado a queda.

  • Assuming that Kelvin was an Other and was attempting to lure Desmond away, the system error could have been planned, causing the flight to be pulled down and split apart by the magnetic force. However, when Desmond pushed the button, the Swan released the built-up magnetism into the air, much like in Live Together, Die Alone but not as powerful. This magnetic force would then partially repel and slow down the plane’s velocity, saving the lives of the passengers.
  • Although The System error caused by Desmond coincides with the crash of flight 815, it has already been mentioned by Sayid in the beginning of season 2 that Titanium (the metal which aircraft are made from) has very little or no magnetic attraction (as he was using titanium plane wreckage while attempting to get through the concrete wall in the newly discovered hatch) Therefore how could an electromagnetic pulse bring down the aircraft? Maybe flight 815 crashed for a reason independant to this event
    • Actually, aircraft are primarily made from aluminum - thus the ubiquitous phrase, "aircraft-grade aluminum." However, titanium components have become more prevalent in recent years. But iron and other materials that are more suscpetible to magnetic attraction are, in fact present on the plane.

  • Assuming that a plane is at cruising altitude after six hours of flight, and the pilot made no indication that the plane was being brought down for a crash landing, the plane had to be brought safely to the island. Consider the UA Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, there was hardly any fuselage left. All three pieces of Oceanic 815 were intact after impact. They may have been brought down slower than normal to ensure all three pieces landed on or near the island and to ensure there would be survivors. If Flight 815 were brought down on purpose, perhaps the breakup of the plane was accidental?
    • Actually, the reason so much of the plane survived was most likely not an accident. In many aircraft crashes, the pilot dumps the fuel in hopes that more people will survive. Obviously this was not the case with September 11, so you can't really compare the two.
  • If electromagnatism caused the crash, thanks to Desmond's system failure, then that suggests that everyone's ending up on the island is entirely random.
    • This seems extremely unlikely since we have repeatedly seen how connected the survivors are to each other and the island prior to the crash.
      • This isnt that unlikely. Considering that they were all in the same city at the same time, it isnt impossible that they would run into eachother before getting on the plane. Also it goes back to that old saying that there is never more than 6 degrees of seperation between any two people.
        • However, it's hard to overlook the fact that plane was flying directly over the island prior to the system failure. Whether or not the crash itself was planned, the plane was clearly headed for the island in some way.
    • Therefore we must conclude that the crash was not random at all but was planned.
    • If the crash was not random, then it is unlikely that Desmond caused it by failing to press the button that day, casting doubt on the printout's authenticity.
    • It is still possible that Desmond caused the crash if we make the hypothesis that the plane was supposed to land on the island. The others were waiting for the plane to arrive, but Desmond caused a crash and they were left with the survivors only.
    • Perhaps Desmond was meant to follow Kelvin and cause the system failure, therefore the plane was supposed to crash.
  • It is possible that Kelvin, still a DHARMA employee, was ordered to let the button go at a specific time in order to crash the plane and release the stored energy
    • Being an ex-CIA employee, he knew Desmond would follow him and was supposed to lure him away long enough for the plane to crash, killing everyone aboard.
    • However, Desmond surprised Kelvin, making it back to the Swan in time to press the button, thereby saving the plane.
    • In addition, Desmond kept on pressing the button until he turned it over to John Locke. This may be why Henry Gale allowed himself to be captured - to convince John to let the button run down. It may also be why Henry didn't seem too upset during the explosion in Live Together, Die Alone.Furthermore, in an interview Michael Emerson stated that his character was not suprised to see the discharge of light.
    • Why would DHARMA want the plane to crash? Maybe because everyone on board had some connection to them and they arranged to kill everyone in one fell swoop, crashing the plane somewhere where it would never be found.
  • It could all be an amazing coincidence.
  • The timing of the crash is odd. We know that the flight took off at 14:55 Sydney time and that it broke up and crashed about 8 hours later. The survivors awoke on the island during daylight hours, and the log printout indicates that the crash was caused at 16:44 local island time. However, a plane heading East from Sydney would be in darkness 8 hours after 14:55 - it would have to be heading West to be in daylight.
    • That's an error.
    • The article on the last episode of Season two says the prinout read: "922044:16" - September 22nd, '04, 4:16 (AM). The 5th footnote on this page takes this all into account and questions the date of the readout, but if they crossed the international date line, 24 hours would be subtracted, and it would be September 22nd, not the 23rd.
  • The date of the crash (September 22nd) could be a reference to the Vela incident, where on September 22nd 1979, a bright light was spotted from space by a satellite (much like the effect The Discharge would have caused on September 22nd 2004).
  • Desmond did not crash the plane it was someone else on the island and it is a coincidence that there was a system failure on the day that the plane crashed
  • In the season 3 opener, we see that the others who witnessed teh crash were suprised by it, this strongly reinforces the arguement that the crash was a random accident caused by the temporary system failure of the hatch.

Interesting Notation

  • Oceanic Airlines Flight 816 appeared in the 2003 thriller Code 11-14, which featured a terrorist and serial killer onboard, causing almost a crash of the plane by reprogramming the autopilot
  • Oceanic Airlines Flight 343, a Boeing 747-200, appeared in another thriller from 1996: Executive Decision
  • Oceanic Airlines 760, a Boeing 747-47 features in the drama series "Category 6 - Day of Destruction". The plane is struck by lightening and forced to take emergency procedures

Notes

  1. The aircraft that was depicted in the crash, however, was an ex-Delta Airlines Lockheed Martin L-1011-1 Tristar.
  2. There are multiple backup systems for the transceiver on the 777.
  3. The 777 can take heavier turbulence than the human body can withstand. It is also fully automated with all manual backups.
  4. Boeing 777s, like the one used as Flight 815, would never use gate 23 at Sydney Airport, only 767 and 737 are small enough to use this gate.
  5. In the scenes a few minutes before Flight 815 crashes, it is the middle of the day, however if they left Sydney at 2:55pm, they should have crashed at approximately 1am (8hr flying + 2hr time difference from Sydney), meaning that Flight 815 actually crashed on September 23.
  6. During one of J.J. Abrams first TV Series, Alias, during a scene in an airport, you can hear last call for boarding passengers of Oceanic Airlines flight 815!
