Normal 77-cap17

Picture of the computer.

A DHARMA Initiative computer, located in The Flame used for communication with the outside world. A computer game of chess must be won in order to gain access, which at that point will start a clip of Marvin Candle giving options of entering codes. If communication is determined to be cut off, then Marvin will tell the user to enter "77" because the hostiles have overridden the station. Locke wins a game, and subsequently enters 77, exploding The Flame.

Lost Chess Game

Layout of the board when Locke put the computer in checkmate

The video in the flame station has Marvin Candle giving a number of choices based on number sequences in random access video clips. His introduction is:

Manual override achieved. For pallet drop enter 2-4. For station uplink enter 3-2. For mainland communication enter 3-8

If 3-8 is entered but the satellite is not working the following options are presented in a new clip:

The satellite dish is inoperable. Communications are down. For sonar access enter 5-6

If 5-6 is entered but the underwater beacon is not working the following option is presented in a new clip:

Sonar is inoperable. Has there been an incursion on this station by the Hostiles? If so, enter 7-7

If 7-7 is entered, then C-4 is ignited on a time delay, destroying the station in an explosion

Marvin Candle appears to have a prosthetic left arm in these video clips.

  • The finish to the chess board was from a match between Anatoli Karpov and Garry Kasparov from the 1985 World Championship. In that match, called the "Brisbane Bombshell" Kasparov, playing black, defeated Karpov in 40 moves. Incidentally, that game did not end in checkmate, but in a yield by Karpov. The board, as shown on the show, had two valid moves for the computer. (Jogos) Game replay and details.
