La Sra. Hawking trabaja en la tienda donde Desmond va a comprar un anillo de compromiso para Penelope durante su retroceso/viaje en el tiempo, después de girar la llave.
Cuando muestra un anillo y Desmond decide comprarlo, ella se disgusta y le dice que no se lo llevará. Despues que Desmond rechaza devolver el anillo, ella le explica que conoce su nombre, que le romperá el corazón a Penny, que no se casará con ella, que entrará en una competencia de yates para provar que el padre de ella está equivocado, que el irá a la Isla y presionará el botón por tres años, hasta que es forzado a usar la llave de seguridad. También le dice que si él "no realiza estas cosas" , "cada uno de nosotros morirá"
Aun así Desmond rechaza devolver el anillo, y ella decide tomar un paseo con él, en el cual ella señala un hombre de terno con zapatos rojos, diciendo que es un "atrevido estilo de vestimenta". Mientras están sentados en una banca, ella intenta explicarle que no debe casarse con Penny, diciéndole que está en su "camino" ir a la Isla. En este punto se nota un prendedor de la Sra. Hawking - un ouroboros - que es una serpiente circular que devora su propia cola, que representa la vida como un ciclo, excepto que ésta en particular, no está comiendo su cola. De pronto, se oye un derrumbe, un sitio de construcción se ha venido abajo
Then all of a sudden a large crash is heard behind them as the scaffolding from a construction job falls to the ground. As she and Desmond turn around, a pair of legs with red shoes is shown sticking out from under the pile of rubble. As Desmond realizes this is the man she pointed out earlier, she admits to knowing that he would die. When confronted by Desmond as to why she did not warn the man she informs Desmond that he would have been hit by a taxi the next day and if she had warned him about that he would have broken his neck in the shower. As Desmond stares blankly at her she explains that the universe has a way of "course correcting" (a phrase Desmond later recites to Charlie), and that death cannot be avoided. Her last words to Desmond are that pressing the button is the only great thing he will ever do in his life.
Trivia
- Her last name is the same as that of the physicist Stephen Hawking, who wrote A Brief History of Time, the book seen being read by Aldo in "Not in Portland".
- The pin she wears on her shoulder wrap outside is an ouroborous. This particular one is wrapped around its tail rather than eating it.
- In the movie 'The Others' Fionnula Flanagan's character Bertha Mills was, along with all of the other main characters in the film, dead! Bertha did not reveal the true nature of the situation to the films heroine Nicole Kidman who believed herself to be alive, until she began to have flashes of memories of the event which had killed her. At this point it was a staged photograph of Bertha's corpse that revealed the true situation.
- The producers clarified that by "every one of us will die" she meant every one in the world.
